    I'm curious. When you say you try not to buy records that were recorded digitally and then pressed to vinyl, do you actively seek this information out? After all, as I'm sure you know, digital recording goes back to the 70s. Dire Straits' Brothers In Arms, Tracy Chapman's self-titled debut, Depeche Mode's Music For The Masses, Queen's A Kind of Magic, and Talking Heads' True Stories are all examples of classic albums that were recorded digitally, then pressed to vinyl. Do you own any of these?

      @suffolkaudiophile 17 годин тому

      Digital wasn't a thing until the early 80s... all those albums you mentioned were recorded in the 80s when digital recording was the thing to do. If an album was recorded to tape I'll get it on vinyl.

    • @mnhay27
      @mnhay27 8 годин тому

      @suffolkaudiophile the first commercially available, all-digital, pop/rock album was Ry Cooder's Bop Til You Drop, released in 1979. In any case, the point I was alluding to is that many audiophiles insist that a digital recording will automatically result in an inferior sounding vinyl record and that is absolutely untrue. Tracy Chapman's debut, for example, is a fantastic sounding record by anyone's measure. And it's one I'm willing to bet many audiophiles own, listen to, and love without even realising it was digitally recorded.

    I view Mint the way coins are graded. These are not only uncirculated, they are the very best of the uncirculated. The coin has extreme luster and and absolutely no visible microabrasions. Records are the same. They are perfect in everyway. These are unicorns, just they don't exist unless. It would require some kind of grading with authentication before they are packaged. And nobody does this. I'm not suggesting that Mint records don't exist, there are perfect records, but there's no way to authenticate this status before sale. I would accept that perhaps (and this is being optimistic) 5% of sealed records are Mint. So you shouldn't ever pay for this. And something that should be stated is that published Goldmine price guides never stated the pricing for Mint, it listed NM. I myself only buy VG+ as I see them as being acceptible. I honestly don't care about issues with the label issues like fingerprint and spindle marks. I expect them to play perfectly with maybe a slight tick which I would hope could be minimized by a thorough cleaning process. The way pricing by Goldmine suggests is that each drop in grading, is halved from the grade above it. So this should be priced at half of what NM should be priced. I actually don't have a huge issue with sellers listing sealed records Mint as there is that ever so slight chance that they are actually Mint. I'm just not the guy that's going to buy them. I'd actually prefer NM because these are as perfect in sound as a Mint record. And what I mean by this is that record is perfectly flat, look unplayed and the vinyl is absolutely quiet, it's just unsealed. I won't buy Mint because even with the chance that it could meet the criteria for being Mint, there any of the issues I've suggested might be there upon unsealing. A spindle mark could be there from when the record was removed from the press as an example. This immediatly drops the grade to VG+. Even the slightest warp drops it VG+. NM will not have these issues and honestly I think if someone is grading NM, it should be play graded to assure it sounds absolutely perfect. The only time I'll buy NM is when the pricing is very near, perhaps a dollar more, other records that are graded as VG+. While this is rare, these are the records that I don't hesitate to buy. I honestly doubt the NM grading, but I can be more assured they are at least a very high VG+ and I'm paying appropriately. These are what some people grade VG++, but I agree with Goldmine that these aren't true grades. This is because grading even with the most precise objective criteria will require some amount of subjectivity by the grader in their assessment. What I consider to very minor isn't what a lot of people view to be very minor. I view very minor as almost imperceptible, meaning I'd have to look really hard for it or even hear it as it plays. It might be there, but if I'm immersed by the music, I can over look it then it's fine and it doesn't lower the grade. I'll accept this maybe once per side. As it is VG+ is still an excellent grade and in fact, Excellent is the alternate nomenclature for VG+. NM to me isn't a grade that should be given willy-nilly and if I look through a sellers inventory there shouldn't be a large percentage of NM records. I could perhaps accept this if certain records are detailed that they may have come from a collection where records were cared for with exacting measure. I like to think, my collection is like this. And I do have many records that I would consider NM, but I've thousands for records. Of those thousands, there are still thousands that shouldn't be graded above VG+. The reason I'd accept the grading is because reasonably, you can't play grade every record from a huge collection and it's completely unreasonable to expect this from a retail store. If the sale if directly from a collector, this grading should be listed as play graded to myself.

    What a fool..Uses an instruction vid clip of McCartney showing an example of easy bass playing for beginners to diss his bass playing. Now that is stupid . Not liking his music is your choice however wrong..music is subjective..good taste isn’t .

    Wonderful! You just made it to the list of the audiophiles I don’t like or get! Have a great holiday and try to shave. U2? Led Zep? Sir Paul? Is it the case that any band or artist that has the misfortune not to die young and has a decades long career ends up getting stale? Sure people in their 70s or 80s lose their voice. But that doesn’t destroy the numerous great songs and albums produced before that? Doesn’t any long lasting band become it’s an best cover band? Only agree with your point about New Order and Peter Hook. And Dylan, who has a terrible voice.

    • @suffolkaudiophile
      @suffolkaudiophile 2 дні тому

      @PierreDybman I think McCartney should retire gracefully now... his voice is not as good as it was. Along with his quality of writing, which isn't as good as it was. His last good album was Tug of War in my opinion.

    I must agree with most of your picks and evaluations. I detest G&R for all the same reasons, Paul McCartney….exactly, U2 have yrs ago gone from good angry rock with a fresh sound to posh, self absorbed, globalist fakes. Can not stand any of them more. Couple others u mentioned I agree at least a little with but….. Led Zeppelin, New Order, Alan Parsons I’m not completely on your side lol. Perhaps this is because I’ve owned and listened to these groups from their beginnings as I’m 64 now. I have all their catalog and some rare presses plus new remastered copies at least for Zep. I am not the type to believe the hype that I must rush out & buy the newest remastered Parsons project as I have OG’s and that’s good enough. So maybe I am just older and have grown up with these bands from the beginning so the hype doesn’t stick to me. And yes I am a bit of an audiophile and have above average gear. Great fun, take care and enjoy your time off. 😊

    Its true that Bernard never had a great voice but I don't think they could have stayed working with Hannett (cost of drugs for one thing ; ). They wanted to innovate and move on, I think it would have gotten more constrained and fractious. I too bought Eye in the Sky very early and to be frank, didn't like it, massively overhyped by progsters imo. Totally agree with you on Zeppelin, I would go further. If you watch early performances of them its really nothing that special, in fact they struggle to keep it together. If you look closely, they stole a huge amount of their live act from yes you guessed it, the Who (see IoW 1970 specifically, all you need to know is in that one legendary gig). Each Zep member NOWHERE near as talented. Steely Dan, out for a MOTR mainstream hit for yanks driving long distances, nothing more. I don't have much of an opinion about Gilmores personal views but alot of musos politics should be ignored frankly, its not as if they live with our day to day reality. He was good on White City ; ). Various bits of Bob are good/iconic but he has had his fair share of filler I guess. Guns n Roses are a banned topic in this house. I did feel sorry for Axel though, I think he came around to ok when he did his Hall of Fame letter, the music and the rest of the band though, frankly garbage. I also saw the Cult in 85, fat, bloated, drunk, sweaty, two good songs, not at their best that night for sure. I think it was more or less over at that stage. Kiss were always ok for 13yr old American kids who never had the genuine UK Glam, Sweet, Slade etc. Van stroke victim 🤣, have a good holiday 👍

    Hi 👋 Greetings from New Zealand. I like your Beatles t - shirt. Im a fan of them , i grew up in the 1960s. I like New Order , and saw them in concert in 1983 here in NZ. U2's album Achtung Baby from the early 1990s is cool. Alan Parsons Project put out good music in the 1970s. I like the song I wouldnt want to be like You. I liked British Punk Rock , and loved the Sex Pistols when i first heard them in 1977. I went and saw Public Image Ltd in the 1980s here fronted by John Lydon. Great gig , and they played loud. You maje some fair comments . From Carl.

      Maybe a little harsh on new order. Power corruption and lies is ok as a first production effort. I think maybe it's just his vocals that put me off as I said. On Movement his vocals are more buried in the mix which is what like about Movement. On subsequent releases his vocals are more laid bare, which isn't a good idea if you're a bad singer, which he is.

    I bought Tales of Mystery and Imagination by The Alan Parsons Project in the 70s, mainly because John Miles is on it. It's a great record. Everything else I find a bit overblown. If you ever get it avoid reissues or streams, they have ruined it by remixing and replacing that lovely warm snare drum sound with some metallic nonsense. Good list though.

    I agree on Paul McCartney. He was perfect with the Beatles and I love his 70s discography (even if it's not perfect), but from Tug of War onwards it's an artistic step backwards from my point of view (I still love McCartney II with its DIY sound that has its own charm). I'm of the same opinion about New Order, whose Movement was their peak (they didn't do any better after that). The same goes for Gilmour's debut solo album, which is the only one I like. The rest puts me to sleep! As for APP, I only really like Tales of Mystery and Imagination, and Pyramid at best. Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, simply not my stuff. The first three Kiss albums were good, the next three were inconsistent, and the rest went downhill from there. Guns N' Roses, laughable and insignificant!😉 Ah! and I appreciate Steely Dan when they were still a real band! (their first three albums: Can't Buy a Thrill, Countdown to Ecstasy and Pretzel Logic).

But to dismiss someone as culturally important as Bob Dylan without having listened to any of his albums strikes me as a bit strange. To be subtitled "The cat's come out of the bag edition" Tm. Share your thoughts around one Paul James McCartney solo pretty much lost me after Tug Of War, like the odd later single and thought Flowers In The Dirt was the only later labum I thought worth getting where at least he has Elvis to help out on lyrics and arrangements. Kiss: It always was a cartoon circus and I enjoyed that for what it was but my problem with them is all post 1982 when rather than upping their game musically they just went through a period where Paul and Gene lost interest in anything other than the money and frequently putting down Ace and Peter's contributions when their own were scarcly any better technically. Basically having new members sing behind Ace and Peter's iconic make up was the final straw. Let's say I refuse to buy any new albums by them and the cash in special editions of albums that were fun then but hardly milestones in rock. I appreciate Led Zep - have the 1990 remastered compilation on cd - and did get Led Zep 4 on vinyl which does make a good case for what they did but I can't get into them that much to own every.single.album including Coda.

    Siouxie & The Banshees. Brilliant band! I remember "Staircase Mystery", "Love In a Void" and shiploads of other great tunes. Gary Numan has always been one of my fave artists. Especially "Replicas", "Pleasure Principle" and "Telekon". Eyless in Gaza. I haven't got a lot to say about them. Ah, The Cure. I like the early albums the best. "Four Imaginary Boys", for instance. The Cure bass player, Simon Gallup used to play in a great punk band called Lockjaw. "Nag Nag Nag" is a wonderful track by Cabaret Voltaire from Sheffield. Throbbing Gristle was another great band. Lori & The Chameleons? Same band? I really like the Psychedelic Furs. "We Love You", for instance. And "We'll Fall". Wonderful tunes. Joy Division! Say no more! Wunderbar! Magnificent band. That goes for both albums. Cheers, mate. All the best from Sweden.

    One of the worst sounding records I own is the og press of Motley Crue's Dr Feelgood. I've owned a few copies over the years (don't judge me lol) and they've all been muddy and flat with too much mid range. The CD sounds much better.

    Worst was Shades of a blue orphanage by thin lizzy. I have tried 6 Santana records but unfortunately they all sound the same. Why doesn't he make a different record. All Doors lps sound as if the singer is playing with himself. They spoilt the Kiss lps by having a hole in the middle.

    The biggest reason for your inner groove distortion is likely not a flaw in the vinyl but more likely it was once played with a worn stylus which caused groove wear or played with an improperly set to the tone arm cartridge. The inner most tracks always suffer most. I have both as well from the 60's and both play fine. Sound wise, I suspect they are not as dynamic sounding as others due to the crowded 8 songs per side.

    Vinylsonic issues aside if you still want a good cleaning machine the best is the German Knosti Disco-Antistat manual cleaning bath used with British made Vinylshelter cleaning fluid, i have used it for many years with great results, prices are very much lower than the ultrasonic models too.

      @slowpawstevet3676 I think the Abbey Road remasters have been a hit and miss affair.. certainly Michael 45 has had some bad experiences with them. Myself, the few I have are OK, Scott 4 is worthy of note.

    Early pressings of Yes' Close to the Edge had a lot of distortion on side one on the organ passage, recently remasters managed to fix this problem and now the copy to own. Rush Vapor Trails was supposed to be bad sounding on CD but the first edition vinyl copies sound fine. I found most Japanese pressings I have heard myself are not good, there are some great ones but not many . The best Magical Mystery Tour stereo LP pressing is the 1973 Germany reissue, Apple SHZE 327 D. Nice video.

      @@suffolkaudiophile Agreed about the German Horzu "Magical Mystery Tour." That one is especially worth having because it contains an extended version of "Strawberry Fields Forever" in which John Lennon says "I buried Paul," or "I'm very tall," or "cranberry sauce," or whatever it is, twice.

    Japanese vinyl is always a curates egg, if not a roll of the dice. Whilst the packaging and pressings are nearly always impeccable, the SQ lags somewhere behind. I know for sure, as I used work on the Kinks catalogue when the Japanese franchise wanted to release something they were never allowed access to the OG production masters and on at least one occasion, I know were expressly denied and had work from 2nd or 3rd gen dupes. I'm sure this is not unique to the Kinks and other artist suffer safe fate as well. The Japan labels make other inexplicable changes, I have a period copy of Thunderclap Newman's Hollywood Dream LP, nicely packaged et al. But, for some reason they fade out the centre piece track Accidents a third of the way through (as well as throwing a blanket over it) and move Something in the Air from side 2 to end side one, go figure. Its always a case of caveat emptor with Japanese pressings I find. But, somehow you can't beat a good obi 🙂and they are like a siren to tempt one onto the rocks. Keep up the good work. Russell.

      @Russell__Smith thanks for your insight Russell... totally agree regarding Japanese pressings.. they are very hit and miss, however lately they have started pressing vinyl again at the Sony plant, and by all accounts they sound stellar so I might dip my toe in with a newer release. I have a couple of Japanese releases which are the exception though.. I have a Japanese Rumours by Fleetwood Mac which used the original Capitol metalwork, so it it not only has great sound, but also impeccable sound quality due to the superior Japanese vinyl. Thr other one I have us Pink Floyd's Wish you were here... this is an all analogue half speed master ftom 1980 and sounds better than the current BG mastered digital release, and also the original. Again, it's very suited to the super quiet Japanese vinyl.

    I also always thought part of the reason for the poor sound on A Collection of Beatles Oldies was due to the number of tracks squeezed on to it, but I was wrong. There are 16 tracks but they are very short. The actual running time of each side is less than Sgt. Pepper and that sounds great.

      Yeah, bit of an oxymoron I know. I suppose I sit more towards the hate side with The Lamb but can't bring myself to get rid of it. It's not terrible, I just can't listen to it now I have 2 other better sounding pressings. It's not unlistenable, it's just very different. Regarding the others.. The Moodys record and Florence, they are bad. There's no excuse for keeping hold of the Moodys record other than the completest in me. I honestly never play it, unless I want to re mind myself of just how bad it is. Florence does get an outing if I want to listen to one or two tracks... It'll have to do until someone brings out a decent pressing of it, but I'm not holding my breath.
