      While I think it fits the design language pretty well, it's not one of my favorite elements either. I debated about mentioning a traditional pencil or syringe tip, but I wasn't sure how those would look. I'm sure there's something that could be well integrated though. Cheers

    Not sold on the strap style. They have that "pre-worn" feel that just seems silly to me. But I wouldn't mind seeing more of these "sweep quartz" movements, rather than the tick-tick-tick ones that are the norm!

    • @JonathanTReviews
      @JonathanTReviews 5 днів тому

      I plan to swap the strap as well. Agreed, I can't do a traditional quartz unless it has no running second hand or a small second/subdial. This is a perfect compromise to still have dial movement and grab and go capability (plus a bargain price). It may not have the "life" of an automatic but it definitely has a place.

    The quartz movement explains the price. Personally I feel these should have been solar. Suits the field style and looks. The shadow effect of the fumé on the tan I find preferable, but really I've not warmed much to this and am generally not a quartz customer.

    • @JonathanTReviews
      @JonathanTReviews 5 днів тому

      I'm typically not a big quartz fan either and particularly can't take a second tick. This mechaquartz has been unobjectionable for me though, as it's "enough" of a sweep. I do love the maintenance free solar/atomic G-Shocks and could definitely get behind solar (if it didn't tick). Cheers

  • @theclocker7406
    @theclocker7406 5 днів тому

    I really like the vintage vibes of this watch dial, its great to see something different that has been so well executed and finished. Personally I think this is great value and it's so refreshing to see a new microbrand watch that is genuinely affordable. Although slightly smaller, I still think it works well. Only gripe is the straps surface finish, which I think looks awful and degrades the style of the watch. The tan strap finish looks like tired cardboard, and there are no quick release spring bars either. Not a deal breaker, as the watch is very attractive, and I don't have any issues with the mechaquartz, a good compromise choice. Really great, lovely detailed review, Jonathan, thanks.

    • @JonathanTReviews
      @JonathanTReviews 5 днів тому

      Thanks so much! I'll likely be swapping it to a canvas strap (once received) and leaning a bit more in the casual direction. These aren't my strap preference either even though they feel surprisingly pliable. In the end, like you said, it's not terrible having to make a swap on a reasonably priced and overall well done watch. Cheers

    Is this a field watch? Or more of a dress piece?

    • @JonathanTReviews
      @JonathanTReviews 5 днів тому

      I personally put it in the dressy field watch category. IMO, it's too casual to be a "true" dress watch, but doesn't fully lean into the utilitarian styling of a field watch.

    Very cool vintage looking pieces. Wish they come with automatic movement.

    • @JonathanTReviews
      @JonathanTReviews 5 днів тому

      That may be something they explore in the future. They wanted to keep the initial offering as affordable as possible. As a side benefit, beyond the price, it resulted in a very thin package without sacrificing (a passable) sweep.

    • @Nudel-nc1cp
      @Nudel-nc1cp 5 днів тому

      @@JonathanTReviews Yeah I like the affordability idea but even cheap Seiko nh35 could be a nice addition to already attractive watch. Cheers.

    • @JonathanTReviews
      @JonathanTReviews 5 днів тому

      @Nudel-nc1cp Absolutely, that wouldn't likely add too much. The only problem is that NH movements are thick and would probably add at least 2mm to the case thickness. For me, that would detract from the design. If this one does well, maybe they'll do a follow-up with Miyota 9 series or similar (that would still likely add at least 1mm).

      @ You’re welcome! Having watched the video now, these are killer looking and is a very enticing value. I agree with you, I would not want this watch to get any thicker for an overkill water resistance. Lume is pretty important to me so I really hope the production units can have more dial lume to hopefully last with the hands. Both colors are awesome and I am sure will be a tough decision!

    • @JonathanTReviews
      @JonathanTReviews 7 днів тому

      Dates are handy with dress watches. Unfortunately, that would have required some significant changes and likely would have thickened it up a good bit. To keep it as thin as possible, they replaced the date wheel with the moon phase module.

    How does the watch keep time and how long does the lume last?

    • @JonathanTReviews
      @JonathanTReviews 15 днів тому

      I don't generally track regulation, unless there's a noteworthy variance, as I typically don't wear the same watch for more than one day. Miyota movements typically perform well and far exceed stated tolerances. Wise lume performance is very strong and endures well.

    Terrific video! Right on the money with the comment about an elegant watch with a chunky clasp (and the V2 clasp is no better). The Shellback is a tad overpriced. Just received mine after a 6 month wait for a blue Shellback V2, and for the most part it does not disappoint; however, the on-the-fly clasp leaves a lot to be desired. It is difficult to execute, with a stiff release and does not slide easily or smoothly...very gritty. Additionally, when closed, the clasp remains raised far enough over the bracelet that it appears to have not closed all the way. The bezel looks a lot like a coin edge bezel; but, is polished to the point that it is not easy to turn. It is tight and perfectly aligned. Dial and case back are beautiful. Time regulation is just adequate; but, the lume is very good. Altogether, aside from the sandwich dial, for $200 less, I found a beautiful San Martin with an NH35 that keeps better time and has a terrific on-the-fly clasp and a crisply cut coin edge bezel (along with sapphire crystal and ceramic bezel and good lume). Also for less, try a Steinhart submariner homage with a Sellita movement.

    • @JonathanTReviews
      @JonathanTReviews 29 днів тому

      Thanks so much for the kind words and sharing your experience! That's a bummer to read the V2 clasp still isn't a great match. Hopefully they'll continue to refine it, as the watch design and potential are there. Cheers

    just got hold of a white dial version, the specs finish & quality feel are all exactly as you described ,expectations definitely exceeded. The vickers 1200 case hardening is just the icing on the cake.

      There is a lot to see. It's stunning in design and execution. A modern vintage King Seiko in effect. If it was a Seiko it would be worse quality and over $1000. If it was Swiss you would be paying €1250+ for it. It's a bargain at $6-700.

      @JonathanTReviews I didn't word it properly. I knew rhey weren't damaged in any way but just saying from some angles on video that smaller section of the dial could look that way...did for me anyway. I'm sure it's an impressive dial, in hand

    Terrific review, JT. I like Feynman and own three. This one is a pass. One reason is that my blue Maen Manhatten 37 beats it in a number of categories. Not the least of which is the lower cost of the Maen (~$450 difference!). Also, the Feynman is a tad large for my tastes as is that Trafford, a nice design, but too much on my wrist.

    • @JonathanTReviews
      @JonathanTReviews Місяць тому

      Thanks buddy! That Maen is one of the top options for this style IMO too. While I haven't yet handled one, they're great looking watches. Agreed on sizing, a bit smaller with both of the ones you mentioned would be my preference as well, especially with the Trafford. Cheers

    You've definitely changed my perspective on this watch. When it was first announced I thought it was not terribly convincing and the bracelet arguably a little odd. Feynman before I generally felt was just going a bit over the top with too many distinct details applied in the same designs. Here all of that is actually pared back significantly and considering it more closely now, what remains really does work and works very well in the combination presented. I was worried about the bracelet, both its look and articulation, but I have to conclude it still drapes/fits well on your wrist, so it may be a non-issue and I welcome the idiosyncratic styling of it on this more traditionally laid out watch. This also applies to the subseconds register. Here it feels like a more welcome detail that gets space to shine within the spacious traditional layout. I like the engraved numerals in the same way that I welcomed them on the Longines Master. This is, ultimately, a more modern feeling watch design. It also works very well with the vertical brushing, which offers a very welcome colour shifting effect, while the Midnight blue base colour is nothing if not profoundly handsome. I also think the style of the hands is well-conceived and altogether perhaps the hands are the most playful element of the watch. The comparisons also go in favour, as I appreciate the dressy demeanour and the smaller presence vs the Trafford and DRZ02r. That said, I think it could have been even smaller still, perhaps to the point that the bracelet could possibly drop a mm, too. Again, though, the taper is very welcome on this watch, as is the compactness of the hidden lugs. I think this now goes on my list to watch. The steep pricing is in line with other 7001 equipped watches, I just don't understand why this workhorse movement requires sales prices to rise significantly above the 1000 point. That doesn't seem warranted to me. The cleanliness of the Feynman now makes it my preferred option vis-a-vis its case shape peers Maen Manhattan and Benjamin James Scarifour.

      Awesome, I'm very glad I could help add dimension to it 🥂 Thanks, as always, for sharing your insightful perspective. Well highlighted. I wouldn't have minded it being a touch smaller either, though I think they probably hit the sweet spot for wrist size/preference versatility.

    My crossbar lock was super sticky and gummy, I tried cleaning it repeatedly with a que tip and some 96% ethanol, but it would always get gummy again after a day or two. After cleaning it out, I would usually add some camelia oil to make the action smoother. I didn't realize the oil is what was causing the gumminess, after removing it and putting graphite like you suggested, the action is buttery smooth. Thank you!

    • @JonathanTReviews
      @JonathanTReviews Місяць тому

      Awesome! Yeah, it's definitely counterintuitive since the oil helps most other areas run smoother. Very happy to have helped 🥂
