Where can I see the 1960’s study on wild chickens? Thx
Thank you so much for this information. I recently rescued one 4 year old hen whose sister was killed by a predator. Her owner was not allowed to get any more chickens, so I took her, and I am having a terrible time trying to get her integrated into my current flock of 14 hens and 1 rooster. She is scared to death of other chickens. She will run as soon as they even approach her, which makes them chase her. I will try these methods to get her integrated. Thank you again!
What about roosters, is their favorite word also their name?
awesome presentation, ive been raising chickens for 10 yrs and currently have over 60 chickens and 4 roosters, too love them is to learn their voices, so cool, and how they love
I'd be interested to hear more about chicken social order, pecking order etc.
could you please do A video about the width of roosting bars and what is best for chickens feet.😀 The Difference of opinions are extreme And are allegedly all based on research... Driving me nuts LO.L. I also. Heard you say you use sweeter heaters in your coop. The Topic of heat Or no heat in the co-op crazy controversial issue as well Thank you, you rock!!!
My girls hated the aspen pads lol
However, when it does come to the co-op.Which mine happens to be elevated with an attached run?I would not use sand inside the co-op I prefer hemp and believe it's the best Option for that area
Also where are we talking about using sand in the coop where they roost or the run floor... I would most definitely try it on my run floor since it's dirt anyways.
How do I find your video about different breeds which one should be together... my black copper Maran picks on my cream legbar lol
That's a pretty rough looking mamma. Looks like Frost bite and mud/poo on her comb. I talk to my babies in the incubator and talk to them and snuggle them after they are born. In the brooder I take them out often and let the kids hold them as well.
Thats awesome ❤
Some people can’t get heat to the coop,,
I have a poo eater. She has been a poo eater since she was a tiny chick. Funny. She is my prettiest bird and lays the most beautiful blue eggs.
I use pine bedding in the coop. After viewing this, ill probably switch away from pine to some less irritaing wood bedding. I keep it shallow in the warm months and change it often. Come october i let it get filthy full of poo 💩. From here October to February i stack bedding on bedding - the hope is deep litter giving off heat per composting. My run is sand, and i love it because it cleans their feet! My run is open air in the warm months, and during the winter months I use plexiglass to keep it dry. I hope your wrong sand will give them respiratory problems, my chickens forage in thier run all day. Sun up to sun down, sometimes later 😢. I have sweeter heaters to take the edge off the cold
Im going to heat my coop. Why? Well they have combs. Despite being cold hardy my chickens have frost bite on the combs. My coop is the driest darn coop around.... so yeah im heating
No need to put hardware wire under the entire run. Put it instead about a foot or so wide all around the exterior perimeter and bury it. Sort of like a skirt flaring out. Predators will always try to dig right around the exterior of the run and coop, and once they find wire under the ground they give up. This has worked for me for many years. I'm enjoying your videos, thanks for the great content!
Because I have 3 chickens in a small suburban yard, we have only a small rectangular coop, we have a staggered 2 rung roost. The pecking order seems to have changed as the weaker hen became healthier and joined forces with the middle pecking order hen. At first my selfish hen wouldn't let EITHER of the others use any of the rungs, so I was glad that at least there was a higher rung for the selfish hen to use while the others at least could get off the floor. later the middle hen was allowed on the bottom rung but the lowest hen had to sleep on the poopy floor. Now I look in the coop and see the middle and lowest hen on the top rung and the Alpha hen on the bottom rung. I'm quite surprised, I don't know why it changes, but it seems that the sickest hen is pushed away for awhile, which makes sense.
chicks need light to thrive and grow. The dark cave is not good for stimulation
It normal a Chiken to fear a rooster and leaf the flock
From my experience having rooster, the ones I had seemed to got along with each other more if they were born together, not necessarily from same hen, but if I chose to bring in an outsider, they would fight all day, until one of them chose to run off, sometimes run away from home, these were free range chickens
Thank goodness Elvira is okay! She's one lucky bird. ❤ Thank you for all of the information that you share, both on UA-cam and on your website. Your dedication to your flock is easy to see, and you've made a huge difference in the care I can provide for my chickens. Your videos, along with other resources, helped me raise 3 little chicks when they weren't accepted by my mature, broody hen; and the way you've spoken/written about roosters has empowered me to train my two young roos to exist safely and happily within my little flock. That last thing is a work in progress, but they're sweet (albeit hormonal) boys, and they show a lot of promise. Again, thank you!
I am new to birds. Always loved them always wanted a pet cockatoo or something. Well now i am the proid mama of a single baby house bantam chicken. She has become bonded to me and flies to me whenever she sees me. I know she loves me. I'm going to be lookokg more closley at her eyes now when i talk with her 🥰
I have 18 week old pullets that are motled cochins but I have an established flock. They are about 10 months old, and I have them both in my garage. Now, it is winter. I brought them in because it was going to be very cold out in the evening for 2 nights in a row. I thought this would be a good way to introduce them to each other. I have them in separate Crate areas in my garage, but how can I do it in the winter? I can't sit outside like that. It's too cold. It's going to be 52° in about a week. So I was thinking of keeping them into the garage area until it got a little warmer. It's about 57° in my garage. So I don't know what to do Is a week enough time and I was also listening to you. Integrating them one at a time to the younger group, so I could try that by just releasing 1 of the chickens into the run with the younger chickens, but the run is not separated. It's just one big, long run. With 2 coups connected, I have a bit larger coup for the older chickens right now. But it's all connected in one run. So I think probably the easiest ways to let them go out one at a time. I have an aviary section. That's open to the weather and another smaller crate with a cover. Like a crate, a big crate that can fit them all comfortably with a roof area like a tarp. It's a little harder to introduce them in the winter. Because i can't always keep the run open if it's 20° outside. They don't like to come out when it's that cold, i find my older girls like to stay in the coop. When it's too cold. What do you say. How much time in between? Adding each older chicken to the newer ones. I have 4 older chickens and 3 young ones. What do you suggest as a timeline for introduction? One at a time, or do you just take it?The way they act to each other
Great sand advice. Stunning location
I treat my chickens as pets but like using livestock for legal terms if necessary. LOL ANYWAY, I use the feed bags as insulation and deep litter method. In Arizona the humidity isn’t a problem. Heat is and not all of my chickens are not heat tolerant. They all are hot regardless. Last summer my neighbor brought over a water cooler that was pretty big. It was about four feet high and on wheels. I put it on my front porch because although my front has a theee foot picket fence they pretty much stay in. The back is fenced in four and a half foot chain link with privacy tarp for wind on all three sides around my house. They want the front yard too. So I open it for them and they stare and complain thru the screen. The rooster will crow very loud wanting me to come give treats. Well they sit on the bench and it’s pillows. The cooler was outside facing the bench and they sat in front of it letting it blow on them while they sat on the bench. They loved it.
I've heated my Coop from the first winter I have had Chickens...going on 6 years. I keep the Coop around 45° F. We live far north next to Canada
When I worked as a Pathologists Assistant, our lab received a specimen from the Operating Room from a patient with PICA. It was a few handfuls of stuff including coins, staples, zipper pulls, paper clips, soda can pull tabs, and some broken glass. It was removed from his stomach and small intestine... Amazing that he didn't perforate them and bleed to death. He did this whenever he could.
Thank you for sharing this! I can't imagine what it's like to have these compulsions. 💕💕
I lined my run with evergreen shrubs spaced 6' apart. When they are large enough, limb them up enough for the chickens to walk under. When you plant the shrubs, give them a 'tree skirt' to keep the chickens from digging up the root zone. I use plastic poultry fencing from TS. Cut a 2 - 3' circle with a slit along one edge, then top with a bit of mulch. Works great! I also bought a pup tent and added dirt and sand. The always have a dry dust bath to hang out in!
Ha! Just finished up your video and you talked about putting molasses in the wet feed. I did that the other day not for the laxative effects, just bc I thought they might like it. I’m going to make sure I do that with the Epsom salt on a regular basis now. Thanks!😊
I am so thankful for you! I purchased your chick course in preparation for my next little flock. Excellent advice that I will be incorporating. I’ve also started giving my little flock of 5 wet crumbles which they love and think is a treat! The idea of sprinkling their food in bedding was a game changer. I have piles of leaves in different parts of their yard that they like to pick through. I sprinkle their layer mash (seeds) in there and mix it up. Occupies them for hours, as you say. Thanks!!! I’m not sure if any of my hens have had PICA over the past 6 years of raising chickens, but they can definitely have mental issues, whether permanent or temporary, as a response to stress. I just try to love them through it! Thanks again!❤
Awesome video! I learned so much on just this one! I have free rangers too. Thank you so much! Your flock is so sweet! My first rooster was a beautiful americana, but turned on me, my 2nd rooster was a big production brown, but went rouge and tore up a couple of my hens, they both were rehomed. My new rooster is a bard rock has done well, and seams happy so far!
No your not weird. If your weird than I'm weird too, lol. I talk to my girls all the time. It is true! Many of my chickens have names, and they all like being talked to. Their favorite is when I call them pretty girls. Chickens are smarter than people think!
Love your work❤
i AM NEW TO YOUR CONTENT... I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! THANKS FOR ALL YOU SHARE. ITS REALLY GREAT! I'M HAPPY FOR YOU TO HAVE BEEN ABLE TO MOVE OFF GRID! CONGRATS!
That's what my chick do In my back tho They are like cuties
I’ve definitely heard that keeping chickens is easy. If you’re taking care of an animal correctly, it should never be “easy”. It’s constant learning and work to improve their care.
I couldn't open your document
Thanks this is interesting. I've never had this issue. IMHO the deep litter method is not healthy. Seems to me animal husbandry has normalize a lot of lazy methods to justify unhealthy conditions for their animals.
I have this problem but no roosters.
mine is dieing do I let her stay with her sister and other 3 or take her inside??
Yoh are the best. My truly mentor for chikening.
Thank you very much, this is very helpful I'm a new farmer
My very first chicken has been an Elvira, Easter Egger Eccentric named Wesley who poses for pictures, and communicates in specific ways when she's cold or needs a dust bath. She's the smartest chicken and my first, so I assumed every chicken was like her. Anyway - she has an impacted crop right now and is on her 5th life (hawk attack, mite infestation, Newcastle three times, impacted crop two times before this, and sour crop once during summer - diarrhea constantly from eating weird stuff. She tried a Sierra Newt!!! Thank God she didn't eat it. Anyway - thank you for this. I will try the molasses trick tomorrow. You may have saved her life. If anything, I feel hope.
How is Wesley doing? I hope she's alright
My Sweetie Pie often autopsies her chickens, too!
Rock's... Haven't seen that, But I have watched my Chickens chase down frogs and try as I might...they won't listen when I tell them to Drop It, Don't Eat That. They always end up Eating The Frog's.🙄🐸
Your chicken content is awesome! Always happy to learn new stuff with every update
Thank you! 💕
All my hens know their names … “Fiona , where are you ?” In distance I hear Bawk Bawk Bawk .. and she comes running !
thank you, my chickens are moving to a new location soon helpful for me
I have a hen that's basically PermaBroody, and the first year, I kept catching her eating the nesting pads. She did get impacted, and I barely saved her, but she's still here, grumbling in the nest box from spring through fall lol. That experience really put me on the alert for this type of thing.
What I ended up doing for my impacted girl was using coconut oil for massage, but I would mix a whole capsule of digestive enzymes into each little glob I was going to give her. She ate it right up and I do believe that it helped break down the (thankfully) organic material in her crop, ultimately clearing the impaction.
