It's been far too long since we last updated everyone on our adoption, plus a few other life updates.
In the video, I discuss my newest venture and this "toy" that I purchased. This unique manual-to-electric wheelchair attachment is like attaching an electric scooter to a manual wheelchair.

Chase the Journey began as a personal blog of Jonathon Hyjek, to document his own accounts of living life as a person with Spina Bifida who also follows Jesus. I've been fortunate to have had many unique experiences and I love storytelling, so the UA-cam channel seems like the next step in the natural progression. I guess you could call me a "disability blogger" or something like that?
And now, we're in the process of adopting a little girl with some unique needs and we want you to follow along!
Stay tuned for funny, insightful, random videos that discuss both serious and not-very-serious topics.

    • @ChasetheJourney
      @ChasetheJourney 8 місяців тому

      I only know the ones I had and they certainly were hard to push. As soon as I switched to regular air tires it was so much easier to push. You just have to keep up on filling them with air. We carry an electric pump in the car and put air in them every couple of weeks. I was afraid of flats - it's only happened one time and I was able to buy some flat repair at an auto parts store nearby and I was back in action.

Also, on the quickie, I’m having trouble getting the xenon bc My rep says with the quickie he’d rather me get the older quickie 2 instead of the xenon bc he thinks newer chairs are just made to outdate the old ones and get people to buy a new chair and that the new versions are just gimmicks. He also says I should stay with a rigid bc of the durability and ride but I would like a folding chair for my pregnant wife’s ease of use when she needs to load it and not fumbling removing tires and playing Tetris in the back of the Nissan Cube 😆

    I've been watching your journey/journey to adoption and not saying much as I am from the States and not familiar with CAS in Canada...but it is sounding a lot like how it is in the US when trying to adopt a child through the foster care system (Child Protective Services) and the related panels/court that goes with it. I think you are showing a lovely positivity given the delays/etc...that I know occur and can be so disheartening/frustrating. In Oregon, where I live, you can adopt children through CPS, but the way it works, you (and any other interested potential parents for that child) must, after completing your home study and classes, have your casework/information submitted to a panel...and this panel decides which prospective parent, the child is best to be with...which as you can imagine adds yet another level of uncertainty to the process...especially after multiple visits/time spent with a child, etc....and all of that only happens after CPS has made effort to reunify the child with their biological family for a year--children will not be available to adopt until that year/reunification has been completed/been unattainable. I only say all of this, because I have a slightly different perspective on what you are both attempting to do...because not only have I been a foster parent...I was a foster child. A foster child who spent too long in the system (I entered the system at age 12 and was bumped around placements throughout my teens) and would have considered myself really lucky to have had someone like the both of you want to make me part of your family--but back then there wasn't a set time allotment for possible reunification...it could drag on for much longer no matter how abusive your parents were, though in my case, mine were so bad the court eventually severed all parental rights (I was just too old by that time for any family to really consider adopting me). I know it's tougher, especially emotionally, than what you let on, but I just want to cheer you on and hope with you for a favorable outcome in your case. Whenever you are feeling frustrated or sad or that the process is taking to long, just remember there is a child out there, maybe more than one, who are counting on you to stick with it even if they don't realize it yet. I think the two of you will make awesome parents and hope any agency you are working with can see that too :)

    • @ChasetheJourney
      @ChasetheJourney 2 роки тому

      Thank you for watching and thank you for the encouragement. We've been trying to be open about the process but there's so much that we can't tell at this point in terms of the child's status in the system and the bio parents. We hope we'll have answers soon. Maybe this month. Thanks so much for following along.

      I totally get it! We actually started the process in 2011, and then for various reasons had to put things on hold. We came back to it 8 years later!! Life with a disability is challenging, and then to add on the complexity of someone else having to basically "approve" us was intimidating. But, don't let it scare you. It can be invasive, but I think those of us with disabilities are accustomed to having people ask stuff (docs, therapy etc) Take it one step at a time. You'll get there! Lots of paperwork. Lots of questions. Feel free to reach out if you need anything. 🙂 For us, having a long term foster placement was helpful...and heartbreaking at the same time. The one thing I find CAS lacking in, is training for parenting kids who have experienced trauma...which is pretty much most kids in care. Thanks so much for commenting!

    Like your perspective on the term “special needs”. Oh and I totally agree with the dislike of stupid Toronto traffic and love of dark roast coffee. Thanks for bringing us along.

    I totally get what you are saying Joy! “Momming” two kids who need me to have some extra skills to parent them in the way they need is a big undertaking. It’s exciting and terrifying to feel the weight of the responsibility. It’s also the biggest blessing. You will be amazing!!! I’m so excited for both of you

    I don't use the term special needs unless absolutely necessary. With my boy, we just adapt life to work for him. It makes me concentrate on what he can do, or accomplish. Nice intro by the way. 🙂

    Totally with you on the “special needs” thing! Like people who get diagnosed with a condition ARE/CAN BE disabled in SOME WAY but we learn to adapt to it and over time it becomes second nature to us! Like in my opinion it’s not us that “disables” us further, it’s society!

      Exactly! My wife and I have discussed this many times and we don't feel like the problem is with the "disabled" person. The problem is with everyone else and how they interpret what they're seeing. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Hi Happy. Holluday Wbat do you think about Frog legs casters? Thanks josie

      I looked at getting them. They seem like a good idea, but in the end I didn't want to spend the extra money. I'm happy with 5 inch soft roll casters. 🙂

    You probably can't do a wheelie bc your center of gravity is too far back. In the Xeon you can adjust it through moving your wheels a bit more to the front. But be aware, it can get really trippy. The weight distribution should be around 80/20 up to 95/5 (weight on caster wheels to weight on pushing wheels)

      Thanks. I will check that out! I've made a few adjustments since this video was made and it feels a better. I raised my front casters slightly which tilted the chair back. That has made it lighter in the front end. I think I'm a little paranoid of falling backward, so I don't practice wheelies much. 😎

      @@ChasetheJourney To adjust the tilt you can simply adjust the seat height in the back: if you sit deeper in the chair it is easier to grab the pushrims (like a sport wheelchair), but it is a bit more pressure on knees and hips. With the Xeon you can adjust nearly everything so go crazy :). To practice wheelies I suggest testing them in grass, your wheels sink in the mud and thus it is a lot more stable and easier to find your center of balance.

      I will give that a try, once it gets warmer again...in March or April. 🤣

    Well that is wonderful news! You two will make amazing parents for one special little girl, and she will be as lucky to have both of you, as you will be privileged to have her. Fingers crossed it all works out for you. I'm so excited for you both! Lots of love.
