Olympic Chair | Nakiska, AB
Welcome to another season of ropeway videos on the channel!
Olympic Chair is a Doppelmayr CLD-260 detachable quad located at Nakiska Ski Resort in Alberta. Built in 1987 in preparation for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, it is the longest lift at Nakiska with a length of over 1.35 miles long and rises almost 1300 feet from the base area to mid mountain. From there, skiers can access the Mid-Mountain Lodge along with trails including Mapmaker and Big Bear. It also services a number snowshoe trails.
Olympic is also one of a handful of lifts in Canada that crosses over other lifts (most of the others are at Whistler-Blackcomb in BC. This occurs between towers 18 and 19, where it crosses over the Gold Chair Express.
This lift also had half of its chairs taken off leaving it with only even numbered chairs. This was most likely done due to it being a backup lift to the nearby Silver Chair.
Despite being mostly used as backup, Olympic plays a vital role in Nakiska’s lift network and with 37 seasons of operation under it’s belt, the resort will need to replace it in the coming years. Either a high speed six pack or a chondola would work perfectly, especially if the resort wants to add more things to do for non-skiers.
Stats:
Length: 7143 ft / 1.35 miles long
Vertical: 1299 ft
Drive: Top
Tension: Bottom
Towers: 25
Chairs: 84 (originally 168)

imgoing there this mountuh
Welcome to Nakiska 😂 Was wondering when someone else would film the lifts
Nice! Just wondering, is it running at full speed? Doesn't seem to be.
Yes. Both of COP's detachable quads were never designed to hit 1000 fpm due to the short length.
@@julianhudson7811 Ah alright, thanks
Awesome video! You got 1st recording of this chair since it was closed when Skier72 visited.
How are you able to ski a day at private ski resorts?
I used to have a smoke going up this lift...good memories
Is the ski lift very high off the ground?
Of all the lifts I've ridden, Heavenly Mountain's Olympic Express is the closest to this lift due to clockwise 90 degree loading.
True story, there’s a “Highlands Express” that’s a proper high-speed chairlift; it’s in Wintergreen, VA.
Nice one Bro 😉 Doppelmayr is from my Home City 😄
Could I use some of this footage in my video? I'll credit you and everything
Sure! What is your video about?
@@julianhudson7811Sort of just a deeper dive in skiing in Ontario.
yo, quick question,is there any way to go to beaver valley without becoming a memeber?
The original Adventure Express is going to Lakeridge.
Great video dawg
There’s another Partek in Canada: Soleil lift 2 at Bromont, Quebec. EDIT: Never mind, saw your second video of this lift :)
Fast asl
Stupid lift
nuh uh
Such a neat and overkill lift at the same time 😂 I absolutely love the L shape loading, but hate the fact that the lift is so short
For now, this is the only Poma Challenger six-pack left.
Surprised there aren’t more of them
bruh an 8 pack for a little dumpster pile like that???
facts
The closest thing I've seen to this is the Mountaintop Express at Vail, which has a wider turnaround at the bottom because when built, the lift had 90 degree loading with a carpet, which is how it operated for the first few years before they decided to convert it to traditional in-line loading around 2016.
Such an overkill for a small area. I get the "glitz and glamor" for an 8-pack chair but my god it's not even a 3 minute ride. I do like the bottom terminal design however, it's an interesting setup for loading.
yeah i didn't even notice the heated seats when i was on it. should've used the money to fix up the parking lot
Strange investment
Saw this thing today in action...It's impressive. The L-shaped terminal serves a great purpose in that spot. I wonder if they will add one of these to the St Louis Side as well
Let’s go my dude, also Ontario is a province lol
Sup Julia do u remember if that pool / spa looking area was apart of the resort stay? Or is that open to public?
It is open to public
Do you know if BM lifts was at all related to blue mountain resort? Been trying to find out more about Bm online but can’t find anything
No they weren't.
Skied the lift line up near the top station before last winter. Pretty rad
I have a theory on the origin of this lift... please hear me out. The first Doppelmayr triple chairlifts [In Canada] were constructed in 1973 at Snoasis near Regina, Saskatchewan. Both lifts were removed in 1978, and had bottom tension with top monopod drives. One ended up at Blackstrap in Saskatchewan. The other chair was sold to an unknown mountain. It seems like the statistics for the south chair line up well with the triples at Snoasis.
Sounds plausible. Also explains why the lift isn't on any construction surveys.
You didn't do Poplar chair
That was closed when I visited.
now I want the ski season to start
That’s not an express
I know. This is another instance of a ski resort calling a fixed grip chair an express lift.
Short and sweet! I love the motor sound at the drive.
Estimated speed of about 950fpm.
Cool!
This lift is now gone for Adventure8!!
Its going to be the first Doppelmayr installation at MSLM and the province's first 8CLD.
Are there always lots of bumps at the first slope? 😀
This terrain never re-opened after that season and I think the tow was removed. Probably due to popularity and the need for more snowmaking equipment. Hope they use this for something in the future as the terrain and lights just sit there unused.
What was the lift operator saying about your camera?
Cool. Is this j bar still around? Or has it been taken down since ?
It's been taken down.
@@julianhudson7811 oh ok. What lift was replaced?
Century no longer exists. In the summer and fall of 2022 it was completely disassembled and re-built. It re-opened in late December of '22 as the Valley Express!
why do these chairs not have foot rests on them!!!!
The resort probably chose to have chairs w/o footrests when they ordered the lift.
Does the refurbishment make the lift smoother or rougher than before 2022?
Basically the same IMO. Chair padding is nicer though
This lift has a new name: Valley Express
Not only a new name, but a complete overhaul. The terminals from the original 1999 installation are being reused. My guess for why its happening is to extend its lifespan, rather than getting rid of it in favour of a higher capacity lift.
Looks great! I've never ridden a 6-pack lift.
You haven't?
@@julianhudson7811 Yep, they aren't very common in Idaho. There's only 1 which is at Schweitzer mountain resort.
This is definitely a Sunkid Comfort Star.
Now that's a cool lift! I believe this is the only six pack, fixed grip lift in the world?
No, actually there are several in Europe Here's a link to one at Ischgl/Samnuan: ua-cam.com/video/nXX0blrELfQ/v-deo.html This one's a more modern one.
The only fixed grip six pack in North America.
Next season instead of a chair lift it’s gonna be a gondola:)
I just used it its not
Wild that this is essentially the longest run in Ontario without going to Ottawa or Thunder Bay. So many skiers, so little vertical...
The longest run at blue is actually the ski there cross which is in the orcha
Not really so little vertical this ain't out West
Poo Mountain, No Good.
That is a very slow lift. I like it tho.
