To me Pan india movie is all about business necessity. Top heroes rose their salary sky high and at one point it broke the threshold that they had to be pan india to move further. It has nothing to do with quality of the cinema. Tamil cinema had villains from north and heroines from telugu and malayalam very long ago. Movies like maharaja, lubber pandhu are not pan indian movies but yet it delivers top quality cinema. To be frank downfall of tamil cinema started way back 10 years ago. New faces stopped coming into tamil cinema and cine industry rode on the back of 5 or 6 top stars all of them were aged now and some of them got retired. This creates a void. Kollywood situation now is only good content will earn money and no stars there to do business. Producers are lazy to hunt for good content and yearning to go back to stars desperately. Its a cycle and kollywood will bounce back.

i Personally think tamil cinema should not try to achieve 1000 crore.. the only way to achieve it is by attracting north indians for that we should fall to level of mind numbing cringe logic less movies like pushpa2 kgf2 and bahubali 2.. i would rather live in a world where tamil cinema never achieves that mark but produce lot of good content with social messages like it used to.. just focus on making good quality movies which will focus on social messages and realistic story telling.. even these days movies like such are releasing but there is no north indian audience for it we should try make movies like jai bhim,pariyerum perumal, asuran, viduthalai, visarani.. Another big issue that u havent mentioned in the video is casting problems even if the story doesnt suit the actor at all the producer try to make the movie with big actors then producer wants to include some mass scenes to make movie commercial.. Vettaiyan is one the recent example the movie has a really good message and a very great potential rajini sirs screen presence in that movie was extra ordinary.. but u can clearly observe the pace of the movie going up and down for some unnecessary commercial scenes in between i can clearly see some of those commercials shots were done during reshoots which was most likely forced by producer (Lyca productions- they are the reason for the disastrous indian 2 too).. trying to make a catchy punch dialogue just like in old rajini movies which clearly didnt work. If they didnt try to over commercialise the movie it might have turned out to be great just like jai bhim.. if they feel they cant earn back the budget without commercialising the movie then they should have just gone with a different actor whose pay will be less and will have very less audience to please.. One thing no movie industry has beaten us until now is how frank and open we are in our movies regrading caste issues and social issues no movie indian industry does it better than us in that regard... so i think we should just focus on that..

No good music and lack of comedies !!! Think about it. Many movies come back into people's conscious minds when they listen to the songs again and they feel very PLEASANT listening to the songs. Same goes with comedy The strength of a cinema industry lies in the legacy of it's movies and that it's directly proportional to how memorable the movies are. Even movies which are terrible and would have passed out of public minds long back are still remembered. How is Minnale still part of pop culture? Why is Middle class Madhavan still remembered 90% of the reason we revisit old movies and rediscover lost gems is only in the curiosity to see "andha paatu vandha padam le... Epdi irukku'nu paappom". That's how we preserve the legacy of our past directors, technicians and their craft and discipline. Unlike other industries around the world which died out in the wake of Hollywood, the Indian industry, despite a perennial lack of budget and technical skills always stayed strong only because of 2 things. 1) the ability to convey different emotional beats and tonalities within the same movie giving a navarasam filled multi-genre experience - this also helped us tackle complex political and emotional plots that won't dare be tried in Hollywood. 2) MUSIC - And that too organically having the craft to produce the right kind of songs for a situation in a variety of emotions and integrate them in a movie. Eg: any Vishwanathan-Ramamoorthy movie, Salil Chowdary, etc. Hollywood could only think of a set pattern of songs which had a limited usage in so called 'musicals' that's why they died out. The mark of a good director and producer is in identifying the right kind of music and songs which give an impact to the emotions of a movie beyond the screenplay page. And integrating it wholesomely in the movie. But because of a lack of craft in a lot of directors, they didn't know how to get the right kind of song for a situation or how to place it in the movie with the right visuals. Hence, it would appear like speedbreakers. The producers insisted but without craft, movies looked like they were forced in having songs and audience protested. But now, we have given up on our very strength and after 1 full century, Hollywood is finally taking over us. A B grade stupid movie like Mufasa has grossed higher than most Tamil movies this year. The only songs that exist are the kuthu songs which are supposedly catered to the 18-30 year olds joblessly visiting theatres and active on social media. However, please note that A) Adolescents can't decide what they want for themselves only and a lot of them feel very ashamed of their decisions and tastes as they get older and want to forget them. The same will happen with the new age chartbuster songs. They will burn for a while, but are quickly washed out of collective memory B) you are alienating the rest of the demographics and as a result your very market who are not active on socials, who won't come first day, but when they do, will keep the movie running for weeks and months. As long as Thamizh cinema was producing some of the finest songs in South India, we were dominating. Now we are not. And lastly... The fear to reinvest in songs and glorify musicians Just imagine ! The Ilayaraaja biopic has not found a new producer after the previous guy backed out because of the fear that the movie can't do business. A movie on a great genius who was the soul of most thamizh movies for atleast 2 generations with 1000+ films and 8000+ songs. With a lead actor like Dhanush and a technically thorough director like Arun Matheshwaran. If thamizh cinema can't make a biopic on someone so integral to the industry and are SCARED that the movie won't do business and can think only in standard commercial lines... Then the industry needs to have a downfall, wash itself of the rust and useless dirt weighing it down and re-emerge with people who are actually capable, creative, collaborative, skilled and disciplined.

Just saw Pushpa 2 days back. One of the Worst movies I've ever watched of all time. Yet there's still people who can boost this garbage to 1000 crore. So nobody wanna listen to critiques anymore

Many of the issues you mentioned are there in telugu industry as well. But Since Rajamouli is from telugu, tollywood became famous. Removing outliers, tamil films beat telugu ones in many aspects

As the person rightly mentioned he himself should watch Pushpa and Arjun reddy and give constructive criticism. Filmmaker’s generally don’t know what works and what doesn’t. If they are hitting such numbers they must be doing something right. Even though they might have a thin storyline they know how to keep the audience engaged. Tamil movies must spend money on marketing. If you come out of your bubble you will get to know how much marketing Pushpa has done to promote its film in north india. Rajamouli is someone who’s mastered the promotion and storytelling part of film making and the box office numbers speak for itself. I wouldn’t tell the filmmaker’s to come out of their caste oppression movies like everyone does. But focus on stories which are entertaining to everyone not just Tamil people. As a Telugu guy I feel maharaja and aavesham are some of the best films I have seen this year but that doesn’t guarantee box office success. So please focus on making good films,promote them globally and stop crying on movies that are doing well.😊
