Hello! I’m Ammar and I am obsessed with drawing portraits.
For the past two years, I have been teaching myself how to draw and making an effort to make art consistently. I love to document what I learn about drawing on my art blog and I'll be sharing snippets from my art journey here!

I STUDIED A PORTRAIT by a Different Artist Everyday
These past few months I had been feeling quite uninspired when drawing portraits. So to fix that I decided to do a drawing challenge in which I attempted to draw 7 master studies by 7 of my favorite artists in one week and I documented my tiny art project in this video.

How I SHADE Portraits (Drawing Process)
Переглядів 4 тис.4 місяці тому
In this video, I break down my 6-step process for shading faces starting from how I plan the outline, down to the very final rendering. While my shading process is far from perfect, and I must confess to being a bit too precious of my drawings, I think following this shading process has helped me improve the believability and overall quality of rendering of my portrait drawings. 🕗 Chapters 00:0...
Exercises that TRANSFORMED my Portrait Drawing

When I got back to drawing two years ago, my portrait drawings lacked structure, depth, and art style, and getting them to look somewhat believable was a long and often frustrating process. 5 Face Proportions that Solved Portrait Drawing for me
Переглядів 25 тис.5 місяців тому
When I got back to drawing two years ago, my portrait drawings lacked structure, and getting them to look somewhat believable was a long and frustrating process that was far from reliable. Recently, I have been practicing a lot and just studying different approaches to drawing the human head such as the Loomis Method and the Reilly Abstraction to improve my understanding of facial structure, an...
Thaaaaank you Ammar!!
@@s0ftcurrents you're most welcome 😊
After a careful look at the measuring rules I throw away all of it and focus more on improved OBSERVATION rather than pre-conceived models. Doing so unleash all kind of angles and compositions when drawing from refs. Loomis method is overrated in that use case but not if you draw from imagination.
@@Eternal-ReTuning thanks for sharing your insight! I personally feel like I draw portraits more consistently when I use a handful of key ratios early in the drawing but I try not to over rely on these rules because that tends to make the drawing look more generic if it makes sense. But I'm not at a level where I can just discard Loomis and draw a face well consistently without breaking the process into a series of repeatable steps. It's good to know you have a drawing process figured out that works for you! 🙂
gorgeous studies, very well done
@@jenakin_skywalker6275 thanks so much 😊🙏
Loved this video! Definitely inspired me to do some master study sketches!!

Ah, your video help me soo much! I feel a kinda lost at art but watching your video gived me a way to deal with my insegurance and lack of inspiration. Thank you, I know it is a weird comment, but thank you Edit: +1 subscriber

Why not make it a daily habit. Tackle your weknesses. Why do you think you haven'tbeen "motivated?"
@@DartagnanMagic I think drawing the same type of portraits over and over again got kind of repetitive so I'm just trying something different for a change 🙂
@@ammardraws Thats what I mean though... draw things you don't draw all the time -- focus on your WEAKNESSES.
@@DartagnanMagic you're right I should focus on my weaknesses more because otherwise I'll probably stagnate. Appreciate your feedback!
@@ammardraws I only started drawing a year ago May after about 30+ years off. Have been drawing every single day a nd keeping track. Took Peter Han's dynamic sketching I course whoioch forced me to draw plants, flwoers, vehicles etc---things I probably wouldn't have chosen independently. You're doing great!
@DartagnanMagic that's so cool! I'm currently going through the bargue drawing course and will check out Peter Hans once I'm finished. Keep up the good work!
I keep loving what you do. I also love the patience and dedication that the video reflects about your work. Please let me tell you that every drawing or painting, is a sketch until it becomes a masterpiece. I am not sure, but. Did I see some asymmetries en two of your drawings or is it the camera angle? Do you normally use a mirror for double checking the symmetry of your drawing, during the process? By the way. I love the art of Leyendecker, Norman Rockwell’s as well. I would make a suggestion. I am not sure, but I am pretty confident to say that copying Gustav Klimt can help you out on practicing abstract drawing and getting a deeper understanding of form simplification. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 nice video!
@@walden3565 thanks so much for kind your feedback and advice! 😊🙏 I never use mirrors in drawing so curious to learn more about that. Will definitely look into that 🙂 Love Rockwell and Klimt! I was actually about to draw Klimt's sketch of a reclining young man's head as part of the challenge but changed my mind last minute. Definitely plan to study his work soon 🙂
@@ammardraws Kelp on doing it. Next video with Klimt 😉 For me drawing is like a mystical experience. The drive to do it is totally irrational, sometimes frustrating, but so satisfying many times. Your videos reflect your passion and commitment. Now it is more and more important to lead us to make masterpieces in the future. I mea, they can be simple pencil drawings, but with that kind of sensitivity behind. The other approaches are only images. In the past when Leyendecker painted a cover magazine it was for commercial use but there was a sense of Art behind, that has made his paintings going beyond temporary use. I am from Spain. I highly recommend you to take a look at the drawings of Antonio López García. Not the paintings themselves, but the collection of drawings. You will be able to see the smoothness of the value transitions. Same case for some of the body skin representation in Klimt’s paintings. The are so subtle… far away from needing to make contrast. Go for it!!
@@walden3565 thanks so much for sharing your insights and the recommendation! It's the first time I've seen Antonio's work (excuse my ignorance) and I find it very moving. Will definitely be studying his work. Much thanks 😊🙏

Great job Ammar ! Thanks for sharing brother
Thank you! 😊
learnt lot of new thing.for eg triangle formation . Awesome trick
Keep going my friend! Thank you very much! Regards from Brazil
Dear Binge. I love what you do. If I am allowed to, I’d like to make some suggestions that maybe, or maybe not, you know them well. I would recommend you to try blending thin graphite layers with soft brushes. One thin layer in the same direction (lines) and then blend, then put another thin layer in the oposite direction and blend again, and so on, until getting the desired effect. I also would avoid blending with your fingers. It will add some skin oil that do not work well with graphite. The drawing will end with shinny areas that ruins the drawing in terms of texture, volume and simple aesthetics. Keep on drawing and uploading! 💪🏻
Thanks for the suggestions! I'll try blending with a brush. Sounds tempting 😊
Very insightful.
This channel and this content is literally what I was searching for, tysm man for your hard work. This video was very helpful ❤
Thanks so much for your kind words! Means a lot to me 😊🙏
I'm using the triangle! Not do many people done it, and it's a totally game change to me. I did before knew this channel, but your explanation it's absolutely perfect. Congrats!

Thank you for these videos! I have been slowly learning to draw and getting over my fear of failure, and the knowledge youre sharing is immensely helpful.
You're most welcome! 😊 I'm glad to help I'm my small way and I hope you conquer your fear and have an incredibly fulfilling art journey ☘️
I just saw your work you might be interested in trying Faber Castell 5 Graphite Aquarelle pencils, not expensive, I do watercolor and they are a cross between pencil and watercolor but it would work with your style. You draw normally and then use a brush with just water and go over where the shadows are. Just make sure you use the right kind of paper that can get wet. They are quite fun. If you wet your paper first then draw the effect is more like charcoal. The only thing is once wet, I haven't found a way to erase them 😅
That sounds super fun! I'm tempted to try next month in October while exploring wet media. Thanks so much for the suggestion and advice 😊

What pencil are you using ??
Not sure exactly which one you're referring to but I mostly use one of these: -Blackwing -Faber castell (9000 series) -Faber castell mechanical (TK fine) -Cretacolor monolith woodless pencil (only use this occasionally because I find it hard to get a sharp point). 🙂

Thanks so much for the kind words! 😊 it means a lot to me that you've remembered me from my blog 💌🙏
I've always admired drawings of statues but never thought of drawing them feeling they're rather outdated!🤪and of course difficult. But the way you said how it helps you see the face objectively- form, light and shadow, etc.... It kind of clicked! I downloaded some free Loomis/method books from an online library. I can print the exercise sheets that I want to make give it a try myself. So do you start with Ex.1 and only work on that for while? What was the order of you routine? Also, your drawings are very good. You are talented. Thank you very much for this inspirational video. By the way the woman you're drawing at the end of the video looks cuter than the one on the phone.😂
Thanks so much! 😊 I just studied each chapter of the loomis book (except for the part about drawing hands, I'm still procrastinating on that) and just recreated the step by step drawings as I went along. To reinforce what I learned, I also practiced drawing the loomis head from photo references using the book as a guide. Hope you get some nice practice!
