Welcome to my channel. I am retired and live on Mount Desert Island, Maine. I make videos about various aspects of life on the island. My topics include reviews of lobster rolls, sailing the waters around the island, the solitude of winter, dealing with the hordes of summer tourists, housing and the cost of living here and videos about the towns on the island. For example I go to Bar Harbor pretty much every month so you can watch my Bar Harbor videos and see the town on crowded summer days as well as quiet snowy winter days and everything in between My cat Blackie also sometimes agrees to star in a video. I hope you enjoy my channel.
Bar Harbor, Maine Shore Path - December 4, 2024
I went on an expedition across the island this morning to walk the Bar Harbor Shore Path (and go to the supermarket). It was a beautiful, calm clear day with a comfortable temperature for walking (28F). Come along for the walk.

Fall 2024 Sailboat Work Done - Nov. 25, 2024
Переглядів 17314 днів тому
Last Friday, Nov. 22, I epoxied the second piece of new core into the deck of Seaquestor, my Allied Princess 36 Ketch. The weather is getting colder now with overnight lows in the 20s and lower, so I am finished with fiberglass work for this Fall. So today I went aboard the boat, tidied up and removed everything that can't freeze. I may go aboard one or two times over the winter IF it warms up ...

In this short video I put new Divinycell core into the part of Seaquestor's deck that I opened up a week or so ago. I will let it cure until Wednesday and if the repair is adequately cured, I will cut out the next section that needs repair.

Thank you for showing the shore path! I didn’t realize those 2 storms damaged it so badly. It’s been a little over a year since I’ve been there and I miss Bar Harbor very much. Your videos there help very much!
I am glad you find my videos useful. Thanks for watching.
I’m not sure who this is helping….good for you on excellent recovery with basically no pain/symptoms but how is this helping anyone who does have pain and issues with recovery?
It wasn't meant to help anyone. I am simply documenting my recovery.
Todd, i watched last years December 4th video of you shoveling the snow after a storm. Keep'em coming my friend!
More coming soon. I have been a bit under the weather recently and haven't been out much. I am better now and will be getting out more.
I like your attitude and frame of mind thru all of this….optimistic. I’m hoping I can do the same next week. TV is usually so boring, especially those nuisance commercials!! You gave me heads up to take my iPad with me.😊
I hope it goes well for you. They have improved surgery a lot since I had my first surgery 70 years ago. I had essentially zero pain while I was in the hospital. If you are staying overnight take a book, or some electronic device to fight off boredom. If you are scheduled to get out the same day they will keep you too busy for you to need anything.
These are such practical tips, I will let you know how it goes next week!!! 😬 thanks
Good luck! Getting in/out of bed is easy if you have someone to help you. Just be careful.
Hi Todd! We have never walked past the original Inn so that was a treat. How about an update on your surgically repaired knee? My knee is getting balky, but that might be old age.
You are welcome. I will do an update this week. I have been putting it off until some changes I made had time to work out, or not.
I am 2months and a week now but I am still on a I crutch and still experiencing some pain and tightness. What could be wrong. My first knee replacement in 2022 didn't take this long.
Have a great day, and thanks for your video clip
My pleasure. I am glad you found it interesting.
I am glad that you can live with spiral staircase. I will have surjury next month and my house has three spiral staircases. I hope that I do as well as you.
I was apprehensive at first about the spiral staircase. The trick to doing them was take it one step at a time. I did carry a walker to the top of the spiral stairs and left it there before surgery. Good Luck!
Heat wave 😅
It was quite comfortable since there was no wind.
Good video! Just want to mention that Westerbekes are marinized versions of more common diesels. My Westerbeke 21 is a Mitsubishi K3D. Westerbeke wants $340 for the water pump. You can find an aftermarket one for the K3D for $50 brand new. So for the parts that weren't added by Westerbeke, like the water pump, it pays to find out what the base engine is.
My engine is a Westerbeke 46 that is also based on a Mitsubishi, but I don't know which one.
@todddunn945 I found this on the interweb "1985 W 46 is based on a Mitsubishi 4DQ5. Look at the rear of the block on the right side. " Totally unconfirmed, but you might be able to find the stamp on the block. Mine is stamped.
@@efrank39 I imagine it is stamped somewhere. Unfortunately because of the way my engine is mounted it is very hard to see the back of the engine. I will see if I can put my GoPro back there. Thanks.
Just loved it! Thanks for taking us along!
You are very welcome. I was disappointed that about half of the path was closed. Hopefully it will be fully open next summer.
Thank you for taking us along for your walk to see the repairs on the Shore Path. The repaired areas looked great, can't wait to see it completed. We walk it every day when we are up there,
The Bar Harbor Inn did a great job rebuilding the path. Hopefully it will all be like that next summer.
does homeowners insurance cover this kind of damage ? If it does, does it affect the homeowners premiums ?
I have no idea. Some of it might be covered if the homeowners had flood insurance, but who knows. Since the cost of waterfront property in Bar Harbor is in the millions, none of the property owners involved are poor, so that is also a consideration.
and tomorrow we might get snow flurries, had a dusting last night.
Our latest forecast has flurries in it too, but they are supposed to followed by about an inch of rain.
@@todddunn945 sorry, no snow, we actually had white ground cover, not on streets, last night and this morning.
@@williamthawley9251 I am quite happy with no snow. We are hoping to walk a carriage road after this storm, so we are hoping it stays all rain. We are planning to go to a waterfall which should be quite nice after an inch of rain.
@@todddunn945 yes, we saw the lack of rain in acadia, especially with the lake levels. where is the waterfall? we walked the carriage road around eagle lake, mainly because we found parking.
jordan pond, the stream that runs off of it, was dry.
Thank you for sharing, I haven’t been up that way for over a year. It’s still mighty beautiful as I remembered! Hope your knee is better, looks like you’re doing well.
It was a very pretty day. I manage with the knee. I can do whatever I want, but the muscles do ache after I walk around.
Thanks God and Thanks You. Happy Thanksgiving, have a great day Todd Dunn.
Thanks for the comment. I managed to do the last fiberglass work just before the nights got too cold for the epoxy to cure.
Looks like you got a good start on that project. Happy Thanksgiving!
Yes, what I did firmed the foredeck up amazingly. I will do the rest in the Spring. The hard part will be making the repair disappear.
have a great thanksgiving.
Thanks. I am making Lasagna tomorrow. My wife bought the turkey for last Thursday.
@@todddunn945 enjoy, we are having the traditional turkey. and thinking about next year in acadia and bar harbor.
@@williamthawley9251 I hope you have a great dinner and pleasant thoughts.
Todd, stick your head into the chain locker. I think the cored area does not extend that far forward. At least not on my Princess #71.
It goes all the way forward on mine #8.
I'm glad to see that you got your repairs buttoned up before the weather got cold. Have a great Thanksgiving!
So was I. It was in the 20s last night. The epoxy will cure at that temperature, but it takes a LONG time. So I am glad to be done for this Fall. I will restart work as soon as it warms up enough in late March or early April. Have a good winter Jeff.
Nice work Todd. Thank you for sharing your repair process. That is an interesting yacht on your starboard side. Do you know what it is? May you have a blessed winter!
The boat to starboard is a Bristol Channel Cutter 28. It looks great now because it just came out of the paint shop on Monday morning. The boat to port is an Axopar 37.
@@todddunn945 Thank you Todd. You seem to still have a lot of interesting older boats where you live. Not so much here in western NY anymore. I love the variety of boats still around in your area. Thanks again for the info!
@@saabtech3510 There are a lot of boats from the 60s thru the 80s. That period was the heyday for boat building around here with Hinckley, Morris and Able all turning out lots of boats. Unfortunately as far as sailboats go all are out of he business now. Hinckley still builds powerboats along with Ellis, but builders like Morris and Able are gone.
@@todddunn945 I think people are so involved with technology that the 'slower' joys of having the wind move your boat are fading. Many times when we sail, we are the only sailboat out that day. People around here still love to fish though.
@@saabtech3510 It is really different here. Most days where I sail there are from 20-40 sailboats out and fewer pleasure power boats. Fishing is also not much of a thing here because other than a few mackerel there are few fish here. As far as building sailboats goes, my thought is that they simply became too expensive and orders dried up. Also building powerboats is much more profitable.
Thanks for sharing me this video clip. Have a good day.
My pleasure.
What about erection after??
Not an issue.
These videos are so helpful to those of us who have surgery coming up but are really nervous. Thank you for recording this. Hope you are doing great now.
I am pleased that you found the videos helpful. I am now just under 21 months out. The knee joint is fine but the muscles in my lower thigh are still messed up. Yesterday I spent two hours working on my knees and am paying for it today.
@ Sending you best wishes for a total recovery.
@@loriru3135 It is just taking more time than expected.
Hello Sir, Thats a Great process you shared ❤ Have a Good Day 😊 Greetings Canada 🇨🇦
Thanks for the comment. I am glad you found it interesting.
Praying for you and hope everything goes well for you
My urologist said there was no evidence that I have prostate cancer, so I am good. Thank you.
Nice job! Thanks for showing us the process.
My pleasure. Sorry I couldn't show the actual work, but I didn't want to epoxy coat my camera.
Since you have electricity, could you close off the v-berth, use a heater to warm just it? It might keep the deck warm enough for the epoxy to set up better/faster.
Yes that is a possibility except that the yard won't let me run any sort of heater overnight for insurance reasons. I can set up a heater in the morning to make it easier to do the layup, but I have to shut the heater down when I leave.
@todddunn945 That is a limitation.
@@jkepleriv Yes, but I agree with it. I never leave anything plugged in on the boat.
Thanks for the video, it looks like the repair is coming along nicely.
It went well, but took a lot longer than I expected.
Congratulations Todd. It appears things went well for you. New patients do not be deceived, Todd is a rare exception to the recovery timeframes and many DO suffer much more pain and swelling. PT results are generally much slower. I’m 19 days out from TKR and doing very well but still struggle with some pain and stiffness especially at night. ( yes I’m doing PT 3 times a week and three times daily at home). Everyone is different, so don’t get discouraged! Motion is Lotion…
Yes, I had a very good early recovery. If you watch my later videos during my recovery you will see that things slowed down. As you said everyone is different. I hope your recovery continues to go well.
Hi, what do you use studded tires for ME winters or regular winter tires?
I have all weather tires and never change them. I do know quite a few people who use studded tires. Now, in my case, since I am retired I don't drive in snow. Also since I own a snow plow, I always drive on freshly plowed roads when I do go out in the snow. I have lived in snowy places (Alaska, ALberta, Manitoba, New Brunswick and Maine) since 1978 and have never used winter tires of any kind. Here in Maine they are very good about keeping the roads clear and I have never felt the need for studded or winter tires. I also drive a 4 wheel drive truck and my wife has a Subaru.
@@todddunn945thank you!

Looks beautiful ❤
It was a pretty day, but chilly.
I went to BH today and it was the most peaceful, lovely day. Hardly anyone there….i walked the shore path, ate lunch at Thirsty Whale and walked around the shops.
Bar Harbor is much nicer this time of year. The next week is supposed to be warmer so it will be a good time to visit the park.
Thanks for taking us along on your wild ride, Todd!! 😉 🦌🦃
Yes it was a challenging drive, particularly dodging all the deer.
Thanks for taking us along with you, we appreciate it.
You are welcome Jeff.
❤
Thank you.
looks like a bird left you a gift on your windshield
Yes, that happened while I was out on the dock in Southwest Harbor. Most likely a Seagull. I put a note to that effect in the video.
Hopefully the weather holds out so you can get a good start on the project, thanks for bringing us along.
I hope so too. The plan is to head over this afternoon (Nov 16).
On my boat there was no core within 4 inches of the toe rail. The stanchions are in solid glass. The pulpit bases were on the edge of the core, but as I have a bowsprit they are further forward than yours. Both of the fiberglass plies were about 3/16 in each. A previous owner had 4 holes in the deck and had "filled" them with bolts wrapped in electrical tape. Every thing pretty much forward of the forward bulkhead was mushy. I replaced with 1/2 inch balsa core but used circles of fiberglass board at all deck penetra6ions. The deck has no core forward of the toe rails. I guess you don't have to worry about slow cure harder.
Good luck with your project there. Looks like you have it well thought out.
Thanks Roger. Now all I need is for the weather to cooperate.
Hope the weather warms up long enough so you can get all the work done.
It is supposed to warm up on Friday and stay warm for about a week. I will get the piece I cut out replaced on Friday or Saturday and the next piece next week. After that it all depends on the weather. Thanks for the comment.
Did you have the robotic surgery? I am contemplating having my second knee wirh robotic assisted surgery.
Thank you.
You are welcome.
Go enjoy the rest of Maine, there are millions of acres with nobody on them. We live in a tourist town and we do not go anwhere near town during the summer. Im not sure how it can be a complaint as you chose to move to the biggest tourist attraction in Maine.
When I moved to MDI the annual visits were well under half what they are now. It was annoying, but manageable. Now I have to deal with idiot tourists who think my driveway is a convenient place to park when visiting parts of Acadia. That is on top of the over crowding on virtually every trail and at every view point. This year it extended to the end of October.
@@todddunn945 Sell your place, make a bunch of money and move to a much less expensive undiscovered part of that beautiful state. Honestly the only tourist town in Maine ( in my opinion ) that has not been ruined is Camden. Its still a nice town and not all ice cream and Tshirts. It gets a little bust but not terrible. Rockport is great too. I feel your pain, we bought a sailboat and are spending a lot of our time sailing now too.
@@Rainmaker60LM Have you ever driven through Camden in the summer? Yeah, I could sell my house and take the piddly million or two I would get for it, but I would move out of state not to anywhere in Maine. Of course I would have to ship my yacht or sell it. Actually, that isn't a bad idea. It would be nice to be able to see some mountains again - note as a person who grew up on the west coat, there are no mountains on the east coast - just hills.
@@todddunn945 you could sail your boat somewhere no need to sell or ship it. Yes ive been in Camden in the summer and you can get around the traffic for the most part. My point was more towards it still being a nice town and not just ice cream and tshirt shops. There are mountains on the east coast they just happen to much older than the ones out west and worn down. Mt Washington has what is considered by many the worst weather in the world with recorded winds over 230mph. Well if you do not enjoy where you live then certainly look into moving, if you are retired how many good years do you have left where you can enjoy the outdoors and sailing, likely not many before we all eventually wear out just like the once mighty adirondacks!!!!!
@@Rainmaker60LM I am aware of the age of the hills here since I am a retired geology prof. That said, although they may been mountains, they are hills now. Mt. Washington gets that accolade because it has a manned weather station. I assure you that the weather on top of Mt. Denali (formerly Mt. McKinley) makes Mt. Washington look like a summer park. It certainly gets a lot colder up there at 20,000+ feet in Alaska. Heck when I lived in Fairbanks it went below -65F. and -50 F was not unusual at all.
The first month was brutal.Week 5 things started getting better. Its not an easy surgery.
I am glad you got through it. Yes the first few weeks can be really hard.
Good information!
