Green carpet (Juniperus Communis) 2 repot and Tree size guide
Great tree realy impressed with how thick the trunk on the boxwood is
@PXIOMXTIC thank you. It was such a good find. Was tipped out of its pot, hard the foliage had died, roots exposed, £40 reduced to £10 I think… I will have a video up soon before spring of how it’s grown over the past year and future plans :) thanks for watching
Great decisions in terms of your structure, the pads will look amazing once it bushes out. Little juniper loke this are so much fun to work on, just did a summer prune one on of mine that looked wild, and it is looking a bit more refined after that, not quite there yet but significant improvement from where the tree started.
@@Bonsai_Noob thanks, I find these sized trees so much fun to work on because you really have to try and find so much character in such a small size. That’s all I ever hope for is to improve the tree in some way every time I touch it 💪🏼 thanks for watching
👍👌🙂
@@brucedeacon28 thank you as always Bruce
I’ve just got a Chinese elm as a gift but advertised for indoor. All the reading is saying put it outdoors like your video. Im in the uk but it’s cold at night. Is it too late in the season to put outside? I’ve purchased a small greenhouse to protect but looking for some advice if you have any? It’s still indoors right now.
@@PaulHolmes-gg7kg hi Paul, unfortunately it’s how a lot of sellers get away with selling more of them. Now not to say they can’t be kept indoors but to emulate the outside conditions indoors is very hard and costly. Chinese elms will always do better outside (if you are in a temperate climate) mine are out year round in tiny pots, the one in the video was on the bench during -7c temps, they can go down to about -10c. In fact they need that rest time. It would be fine in an un-heated green house provided your not in northern Scotland. As I say down to -10c I’m confident they’re ok if they are healthy. Of course if you have done any work on them I’d only trust it down to -5c… worst case you can bring them indoors for a few days until the night time temps are ok just remember to put it back out before it starts pushing growth, in your house it’s like spring/ summer temps with 10% of the light
@ thank you. I will definitely be putting it outside but as it’s had the warmth it’s growing new leaves… is it just ok to put it outside now and keep watered? Last night was 7 in the south UK so for now warmed up a lot but I am sure temps will drop again. Will the leaves drop now mid winter. Just trying to gauge what the tree will do for the next few months before spring hits. Once it’s outside it will stay there. ☺️
@ if it has new leafs I would wait until temps aren’t going in the minuses. They are hardy trees and can withstand a fair bit. But for the sake of keeping the new leafs a I would wait until they harden off/ the weather is 5c at night minimum
@@PaulHolmes-gg7kg honestly with the UK weather you probably won’t need to water it much until spring starts. Depending on the soil it is in will depend how often you water, a good rule of thumb is when you notice the top of the soil drying out then water, in organic soil this will take longer to dry, in bonsai soil I mean I water mine once every day spring and 2-3 times a day in summer, because the soil is so free draining there’s no risk of root rot
@@YasuiBonsai thank you so much. Will leave indoors in the coolest room at night. During the day, it’s in the conservatory with as much light as possible, wait for new growth to stop and will put in small greenhouse to protect from wind and frost. In spring, out out.
Another great video mate. I enjoyed hearing your thoughts on the work and how you envision the trees in the future.
@@AlexBraunton thanks as always Alex, I appreciate your kind words.
will be adding a japanese larch to my collection this year for sure! wether it be a singular or forest! loving the work you’ve done mate 🤙🏼
Thanks mate, Japanese larch are amazing trees to have in a collection. They also look great in forests, I have a video out later today with 9 euro larch I’m going to be setting up in a forest come spring 💪🏼
I think I was a good move to take some weight from that first branch, definitely worth while bringing it towards the trunk dropping more and then a flat pad. It is a nice directional branch to start with. Little by little the structure is forming. Glad you are posting again 😊, I enjoy your content. I just started posting some shorts a couple of weeks ago, just for fun, to share what I'm working on and hopefully get more like-minded people to share their work too. 😊
@@Bonsai_Noob thank you, I agree with your remarks. And thanks I had a hard time October- December so I wasn’t posting much but feeling better now and determined, re focused on my trees. I should be getting a new place this year with more room so I can grow more :) I will have a look at your stuff tonight, honestly it’s so much fun filming and editing. Even better when people interact with it 💪🏼
@@YasuiBonsai Glad you are doing better and back on track. yeah having fun with this. Still learning a lot about the filming process and trying to get better at documenting my work. I just get into it and forget to take pics or film l😂
@ honestly the filming and editing part is another rabbit hole isn’t it 😂 I need to look more into lighting etc for filming indoors, possibly invest some money into the production value side of it. Theres been times I’ve recorded working on trees and forgot to talk 😂

Great collection and set up Ricky. Always love your videos . Hope you're feeling better 😘
@@michellemulcahymulcahy9198 thanks Michelle, 20% of my collection is gifted trees via your self 😂 seasonal flu I guess 🤷🏻♂️
I'm trying a few more tree varieties from seed. If I come right, I will send some your way. Next year I plan on building some more stands for my trees. I'm going to try and repot my expensive JWP next year as Adam said its not been repotted for a few years. If you have any advice, I'm all ears. As I'm so nervous about this. Stay warm! Hope you feel better soon, Ricky x
@ 2025 I really want to get into a club, spend more time creating pots etc as I’m pretty much maxed out on how many trees I can keep now. Unless I find a bigger living space 😂 you will be fine I’m sure
@ I find when repotting it’s better to be safe than sorry, if it has a good rootball you shouldn’t have to cut much away and as long as the tree has health and vigour it should bounce back fine
Im looking forward to the club next year. Think it will be fun to meet like-minded people. Thanks, just stressing about it. I'm sure it will be fine. I mean it can't be that much different to repotting my other trees. I even brought some mycorrihizal fungi for when I repot it and Bernie
tyvm for sharing :) Nice little set up there inside and out. look forward to future updates
@@robertscarborough68 thank you rob, appreciate the time taken to watch 👀 it was a long one 😂
@@YasuiBonsai You're very welcome, watched most of your videos. Some nice cheapish trees in your collection, reminds me very much of my collection, apart from I don't really have a "finished" one yet.
@@robertscarborough68 that’s what the channel is all about for now. Specimens are beautiful but I think new people to the craft get blinded by these big expensive imported trees. I for one couldn’t grasp it at first. I just like to show it’s still possible with a small budget and small space :)
I love the chatty approach and what you are doing here. I think most people struggle to achieve aerial roots with ficus in the uk.
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat it does seem to be illusive but if Nigel can grow them in Canada I see no reason why we can’t… thank you, I do yap on sometimes but I think some UA-cam videos can be too structured at times, other times I realise I’m such a novice that there’s no point in me going too far into the science etc as I’m still learning my self 😂 thanks as always Xavier !
I always enjoy your videos and approach Ricky. I hope you're doing well mate. I'd like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a happy New year 🎊
@@AlexBraunton thank you for always supporting, im glad you like the videos, I should be uploading more regularly especially after new year, merry Christmas to you too and a happy new year mate 💪🏼
Great overview video Ricky. I'd love to know more about your indoor grow set up. I hope you're keeping well mate
@@AlexBraunton hi Alex, thank you, I think I could have gone into more detail but possibly a follow up video another time. Took me a long time to get this one out as well. Maybe I’ll do a video soon on my indoor set up although it isn’t great 😂 I’m doing much better mate thanks, I hope you are well too !
Well done. Ive been growing and killing bonsai for many years. Your 5 key points are so right. Even after nearly 30 years of growin bonsai I still kill trees occasionally
@@suer666 it happens, sometimes it’s no fault of our own, diseases, pests, that’s part of the beauty I think. Nothing lasts for ever but it once was there for it shall always be. Thank you for watching
That decision to take it right back to basic structure is so important and often ignored by newer hobbyists. I love how you are systematically building this bonsai. great stuff :)
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat thanks, it’s sometimes hard to take 3 steps back so you can then take one step forward. I think new people to the hobby want to hold on to every branch, after doing this for a few years and being brave I just know with some species what will happen if I cut back. Some species still perplex me though 😂 thanks for watching as always
Nicely worked through. I still have to look at mine - it gets missed every year :)
Thank you Xavier, I find this species interesting for shohin sized trees
❤
Hey Mate, great information! I lose tres yearly and repurpose the dead trees in my Halloween display it looks awesome! Still brings me joy to look at them.

@@Bonsai_Noob yeah I couldn’t leave it once I saw it, the video previous to this also has some tiny leaves. Really getting into mame material
Nice bonsai❤
Thank you

Your collection is growing mate! It looks really happy and healthy. Shame about the shishigashira, I think it might be a disease of some sort.
Thanks Alex, it’s almost too much for now. Need more space !! It could possibly be, snuck in through the air layer possibly. It’s a shame but I’m also glad as I’ve only had it a year and hadn’t done any work on it. I think trees that perish that you’ve worked on for years are the harder ones to take !
Lovely collection, you have Ricky. You're in Saturday, correct? I will bring in some of the red pine seedlings for you.
Thanks Michelle ! Feeding my addiction 😂
Lol, you can always depend on me for that 😂 See you tomorrow!
Thank you for the video, I needed this for my journey

Thank you for your kind words. I’m new to this so it’s really confidence boosting to get such great comments. Thank you for watching :)
👍👌
Noo! dont cut that branch on the right it gives you asimetry and makes the tree interesting, if it goes, it will make it a bit of a boring blob/cone
I think you may be confused with the sacrificial branch and the right hand branch…. The plan was never to remove the right side branch but to remove the sacrificial coming from Lower on the trunk 👍🏼
@@YasuiBonsai oh yeah, that will need to go lol. After I re-watxhed the video without kids screaming around I got that. Your plan to air layer sounds good. Could also do it as a cuttings
@@Bonsai_Noob any tips on cuttings that large ? I have heard they can be done…
@@YasuiBonsai yep I use powder hormone and keep them wet in my greenhouse. I have a little $20 greenhouse from the supermarket which works the trick, very similar to what Callan from rojin bonsai has on his bench but bigger... That keeps the cuttings moist, gotta make sure to keep it off the ground or use lots of slug pellets, they love they conditions in there, voracious little buggers
@@Bonsai_Noob yeah I have an issue with slugs atm, I try to use natural remedies as much as I can as there’s also a hedgehog that visits my trees nearly every night… knocks some over sometimes 😂
Mooi, zou ook graag een film willen zijn als het gelukt is. En de tak verwijderd wordt.
Unfortunately this one died, not due to the air layer, but due to a pathogen. I will try again this year
Recommend some proper branch cutters to get a clean cut then use some wound putty. Nice tree
Hi Graham, I do have some concave cutters and that’s what I used on the bigger previous cuts where I could. I only like using the putty stuff on coniferous, I find the liquid stuff works better for deciduous and tropical unless it’s a huge cut. Thanks for watching
Looking good. Ficus are always fun to Bonsai and they grow fast and push out shoots everywhere.
Thanks, ficus are probably one of my top 5 species to work with. Forgiving, grow anywhere, aerial roots etc, very fun trees.
👌👍
Thanks for watching
Great application of horticultural principles. The same factors are also 😊paramount for successful outdoor and indoor container plants. The difference being the human factor where Bonsai are more purposefully tortured by a master where container plants tend to be over pampered by a novice.
I personally find container plants easier to deal with as long as they have sufficient drainage. The container size is the critical factor of how exponentially harder it gets to care for plants/ trees. Over loving or over pampering can also be an issue, or over reaction to any kind of leaf drop etc. thank you for watching :)
👌👍
💪🏼
Love this ❤
