Many of the opinions expressed in this video are controversial. But in the interests of open dialogue I offer Gavin Ashenden's views for consideration. All are free to comment and to disagree. Debate is welcome. I do not agree with everything he says in this video. I agree with most of it but issues of fact (such as the rate of immigration and so forth) I will leave to others to adjudicate. I d...

Fabulous discussion! I have been wanting to write “the theology of the rest of the body” for a long time. Good to know I am not alone in my sentiment about that!
I like you Chapp but a half hour in and this ones a bit too boomery for me. I'm out
Why do you say that?
Excuse me while I go empty some of the unnecessary ram in my brain so that I can download this gold.
In recent years Schmidt has gained quite a following in certain Chinese intellectual circles.
This was great. I love how Jones laughs whenever an occasion for philosophical wonder arises.
Thank you borh -there is much to ponder here . I am an Irish Catholic residing in SW London ,within the Archdiocese of Southwark, since 1988. My three grown up mixed race sons attended an all boys secondary school where half the 1,350 student body was Muslim. I met many Muslim parents across a twelve year period and there was zero evidence that they sought to integrate. In fact many of the students were third or fourth generation and still referred to themselves as either Pakistani or Bangladeshi. The points raised about western culture failing is both troublesome and true. Christendom has left the stage and we are reaping a bitter harvest.
Why is he amazed by a chapel in a public school in Louisiana there are churches in public universities!
Thank you for an interesting conversation and insightful explanations. I think clarity, being one of the attributes of Aquinas on beauty is a very good thing. To be clear is to know. This knowledge can lead to unending contemplation and wonder in the works of God which are beautiful. ❤️🙏
Thank you Larry and Hans for this discussion. It has been very heartening to see counterpoints respected and heard in this forum; especially on such hot button topics. Who would have thought that folks could differ without the one being a right wing firebrand and the other a left wing bleeding heart. We have lost all sense of complexity in typical discourse and this brought back some much needed light where there is often only heat. For what its worth this prompted me, a cradle Cath Revert, to do a quick reflection. In my parish community (York,England) my immediate friends include: English, Irish, Polish, Italian, Spanish, Belarussian, Guatemalan, Chinese, Maltese and more besides. Somehow made coherent by the Grace of the Church. Here comes everybody! God bless you Larry Chapp. Keep up the good work. Your channel has been a great boon for me
Thanks
Thank you for your response. I tried to reply but it didn’t work, so I will simply edit my original post. First, there is one thing in my initial post that I should have written more carefully. I have been accused of being overly sensitive to what I perceive as unfairness and, as you have gathered, I believe you have treated Gavin A. unfairly. You were very curious (as many of us are/were) with the facts related to Pakistani grooming gangs in the UK after the story broke on X. I believe it was you who reached out to Gavin A. and asked him to come on your show to talk about the issue of grooming gangs, not because he is an expert in immigration but because he is someone you respect and presumably trust, and who also happens to work and live in the UK. He graciously agreed, possibly on short notice and, as far as I can tell, at some risk to himself given the nature of things in the UK. In response to criticism of that episode, within a week, you invited a guest who is a principal of a catholic high school in the UK with no expertise in immigration matters (or in politics or in population trends) and with whom you had only an email relationship because he had complained about prior podcasts that he found problematic. According to your introduction, he says that Gavin A. made empirically “false claims”. In my profession (law), allegations of “false claims” are usually intended to suggest (and, critically, are received by the accused as suggesting) deceitful behavior; allegations of empirically false claims often mean the accuser thinks he can prove it; and, in contrast, allegations of “inaccurate statements” usually suggest mistake. I suspect that in your field of academics, a public claim that a colleague had made false claims would be intended to and received as suggesting more than a mere mistake. If you are ever publicly accused of making a false claim you will better appreciate this point. As far as credentials, the fact that the current guest is aligned with Catholic education at the high school level (think of about how little that qualification, standing alone, would mean in this country, especially on topics outside of catholic high school education) adds nothing to his credibility/competence on the topic of Gavin A’s allegedly false claims. Further, he absolutely agreed with Gavin A’s account of the grooming gangs and the magnitude of the scandal. He even added that every person he knows in the Muslim community “agrees there is a problem” of extremism in that community, and he knows Pakistanis who “agree that it [the grooming gangs] is a total scandal.” I am not sure what Gavin A. said that was a false claim, but these issues will naturally raise questions on an assortment of topics, including immigration policy and practice. Gavin obviously discussed that. Is that unfair, inappropriate or false? Consider the fact that Gavin A. asserted that 95% of the grooming gang rapes are associated with Pakistani grooming gangs, a point I did not hear your current guest dispute and presumably agreed with by admitting “there is a disproportionate problem with certain sections of the Pakistani community”. However, he says that sexual predation in the UK goes well beyond the Pakistani community. Ok, fine. But Gavin was invited onto your show to talk about the explosive news in US about the problem with Pakistani grooming gangs. And, apparently, Gavin A. got that part exactly right. This guest’s voice was not one that needed to be heard on the issue of immigration, and certainly not as someone to impeach your friend. Your conclusion otherwise is not supported by your self-professed lack of knowledge (which you repeat on several occasions) on the various issues happening in the UK, including with immigration. I also suspect you would be much more careful vetting a guest who proposed to come on your show to allege that one of your heroes or friends in the theological community had made false claims. In the highly sensitive area of attacking the credibility of a friend, especially someone like Gavin A., you should have found a true expert and not a high school principal with no expertise in anything relevant to this discussion. Finally, public allegations of “false claims” create a deep stain and can be deeply hurtful to the accused and experienced as a betrayal. That of course is not what you intended-and you said as much in your podcast. But, in my opinion, that’s how a friend accused of making false claims would naturally feel. Again, I apologize and admit that my unedited post could have and should have been better. Regards,
First off, the guest is not just someone who lives and works in the UK, but someone who works in the field of Christian education. He is just as much an "expert" on immigration to the UK as Gavin is. Gavin has no expertise in this field either beyond the fact that he is brilliant, articulate, and someone highly educated in Christian theology. In that regard, both of my guests were chosen as interlocutors on the basis of their intelligence and education in Christian matters and not because I thought they are "experts" on immigration. Second, to say that Gavin made "false claims" is not at all or in any way just a different manner of saying that he lied. One can make empirically false claims but do so sincerely and out of trusting flawed sources. It happens all the time. I do not know whose empirical "facts" on this matter are correct, Gavin's or those of Hans, but I wanted to platform both sets of views to give my followers a well-rounded dialogue. I love Gavin Ashenden and consider him a friend. But just as I am not infallible in matters of empirical fact, neither is Gavin and neither is Hans. Third, I decided to have Hans on the show because the views he represents are those of a very large number of people -- people I respect -- who wrote to me after Gavin's interview complaining that Gavin had gotten some things wrong. Indeed, many of them, just as you have done here, asked me to take the podcast with Gavin down. But instead of censoring Gavin I simply chose to platform someone who could articulately represent the other side. Fourth, Hans does indeed agree with Gavin that the grooming gangs are horrific. But you seem to have missed his larger point that these gangs are not limited to Pakistani men or to other immigrant groups, but are also part of a much, much larger problem of child sex abuse in the UK, by members of all ethnic groups, and that the government -- both labor and conservative -- has shamefully turned a blind eye to the problem. Now perhaps this is where the rubber meets the road in a sense with regard to the empirical facts on the ground. Who really are the main perpetrators of the sexual abuse of children in the UK? And that is a question I do not have the answer to. Indeed, one of the main points Hans is making is that if we focus incorrectly on immigration as THE problem with regard to abuse, then we are going to miss the REAL causes and sources. Again, I have no way of knowing if his empirical claims in this regard are true. But his voice was one worth being heard. If people now want to do more independent research and post empirical studies on here about the facts on the ground, I am all ears.
"I share his total indignation"...and then he goes on to talk about why it isnt a big deal now. Honestly, i feel like i need a bath after listening to him.
Wow! “When these rioters were burning Mosques here in Liverpool”?! Were Mosques burned in Liverpool after those little girls were slaughtered- Is this true?
Larry, I love you. But please stay out of the politics space. You talk about how much you hate it and peoples fixation on it. Focus on Christ, Catholic Faith and growing in Holiness. God bless you 🙏
I dislike politics. But I dislike child sexual abuse even more. I have been called upon on scores of occasions to appear on national television to discuss the issue of clerical sexual abuse of children in the Church. I have spent the past 20 years studying and investigating that horror. I am also therefore interested in the sociological dynamics that have led to the sexual abuse of children in society at large. It is an epidemic. And because the grooming rape gangs in the UK have recently gotten full public attention I wanted to explore the full extent and causes of those gangs with people from the UK who I respect. I got two different perspectives. I find both perspectives worthy of deep consideration.
Larry Chap is evidently unfamiliar with the Order of Charity. He needs to read Langella's "Catholic & Indentitarian"
According to Broekman, white working class boys are demoralized and perform poorly in school. Therefore, let’s replace them with high-performing immigrant children ... With teachers like Broekman, I'd be a drop out as well. What we need are teachers who will instill pride in European history and identity in the young. The Church used to be central to that identity. But the Church, and thought-leaders like Chapp & Brokeman, have betrayed their own people for the Church's supposed universal mission and love of the other.
I really liked this conversation. Even though I was too dumb for about half of it 😅
Thanks for this interview. I was extremely worried about some of the stuff mentioned in the prior interview, and I'm glad you platformed an opposing voice.
Estimates of Muslims as a proportion of the U.K. population vary from 2.7% to 5-6%, with some studies projecting an increase to 44% by 2056. Meanwhile, Polish migration remains higher than Nigerian migration. Around 12% of National Health Service staff of known nationality were born outside the U.K. Because of how our electoral system works, even a small proportion of the population can have a big impact on election outcomes-one reason why electoral reform is worth considering. When it comes to child protection, statistics show different patterns. Reports from 1997-2017 found that 83% of defendants in certain cases had Muslim names, mostly of Pakistani origin. But overall, most perpetrators of such abuse in general are white men. This highlights two issues: we struggle to integrate some communities, and society as a whole isn’t forming boys and men well in terms of healthy relationships. Educational challenges are more specific than just about white working-class boys-those eligible for free school meals (those living in poverty) tend to have the lowest attainment. In some areas, like Birkenhead, fatherlessness is likely very high. Nationally, nearly 50% of boys don’t live with their biological father. Role models matter. Research on single-parent families shows they affect boys disproportionately, while mental health trends among boys in England are mixed. But we do know that early exposure to harmful content online can increase risks of coercion and unhealthy attitudes. Despite progress in education, young Muslims in the U.K. still face disproportionately high unemployment. None of these realities justify the rhetoric of Gavin Ashenden and others who seem to be drifting towards nationalism under cover of faith. I’ve challenged them before-responses have been limited or dismissive. It's a good point that this kind of rhetoric turns young people away from the Gospel. The decline in faith is real, but young people are drawn to Jesus. As a school chaplain, I ran a retreat for 15-16-year-olds based on the movie Risen (2016). It’s not a perfect film, but by the end, one lad from a secular background said, *"I wish I were Jesus’s mate!"* The presence of Muslims and Hindus in the West is also an opportunity for dialogue. Figures like Charles de Foucauld and the Algerian martyrs show us how this can look. So let’s not be afraid. And yes-let’s make Catholicism weird again. Young people are drawn to the person and drama of Christ, as thinkers like Luigi Giussani and Hans Urs von Balthasar understood so well.
I recommend Tommy Robinson’s talk at the Oxford Union. If you can find it. And while we’re pointing out lies, Robinson tweeted calling for people NOT to be violent. Mr. Broekman, I’m afraid, was not as careful with the facts as he pretended to be. Much love and respect to you both. Great conversation for the most part!
Thanks for the comment. I am in a bind insofar as I know next to nothing about Robinson.
@@gaudiumetspes22dr.larrycha26 ua-cam.com/video/_YQ94jFg_4A/v-deo.htmlsi=9CAeKfX94BVv1le4 Best to hear him in his own words, if nothing else.
Even if Robinson told people not to be violent, his actions still had serious consequences. He amplified false claims about the Southport stabbings, linking them to the Muslim community and accusing the government of a cover-up. That fueled anger, spread fear and contributed to a surge in Islamophobic and anti-immigrant sentiment. The result? Widespread unrest, with far-right groups seizing the moment to incite violence in cities like Southport, Rotherham, Middlesbrough and Sunderland. His role in spreading misinformation and stoking tensions has been widely criticised, with campaigners holding him responsible for escalating division and hostility. Words have power. Saying "don’t be violent" doesn’t undo the harm caused by spreading falsehoods that inflame tensions and push people toward extremism.
@@gaudiumetspes22dr.larrycha26Read Peter Hitchens appraisal of Robinson. His extensive criminal record (for much more than was mentioned in the prior interview) should at a minimum, raise alarm bells.
The Catholic hierarchy has proven itself hostile to European & European-descended peoples. And their actions and policies are contrary to the Order of Charity,
What a brilliant young lady. Really stimulating subject. Eckhart, Shakespeare, Heidegger, Beckett, Fosse, and now this Ulrich fella, complete my lineup of the Nothing doings.........................
I was hoping to here more about who are the Catholic workers i.e " a member of the Catholic worker movement, a group of people who strive to live in accordance with the teachings of Jesus " and less about the ills of capitalism and how to fix it. A Catholic worker does more doing than taking about it. Right?

When he says that Anglicans are good at Liturgy, hymns and pastoral care does he realise that we invented them and we are worldwide the largest. As for the legitimacy of his ordination, he is a protestant, so no, he is not valid or elicit. He is not ordained.
Fun Fact: If you edit out all of Chris’s long pregnant pauses and “uuummmmms”, this episode is only twenty minutes long 😅
really looking forward to this book.
If every reporter was as careful as Christopher, though no longer a reporter, we would not have the massive distrust we have of news organizations of any stripe. Excellent discussion.
Good interview
Hi Dr. Chapp , just wanted to commend you for absolutely killing it on Pints with Aquinas! Hopefully, you will gain an even greater following now from that appearance
Thanks!
That was one of the best interviews Matt’s done. So much relevancy and honesty. Dr. Chapp speaks from the heart and you know what you’re getting. He’s not grifting. His voice matters.
He s seems too discreet for juice. Percentage of beauracrats not living catholic lifestyle?
James Snapp has convincingly argued that the Adulteress was in the earliest manuscripts of John. We do not have these (though, contrary to popular belief, the majority of early manuscripts do have 7:53-8:11). What we do know is that a Scribe (who have strict instructions to "do what they are told") misinterpreted the archaic symbols which indicated the lectern readings. For Passover Sunday, the Adulteress story was (deliberately) to be skipped over. The scribe misinterpreted this instruction and did not copy the text fullstop leading to multiple future copies being void of the passage. This was fourth century. However, preserved arcane editorial references make it clear that the passage was indeed part of the original manuscript. Bruce Metzger is the primate scholar promoting the view that the passage did not belong and his most famous student (who lionised him) is Bart Ehrman - say no more! Snapp's scholarship lays out the errors and motivations. I was going other attach a 1hr 30min UA-cam explanation but cannot find it. In any case, Dr James Snapp is your man to clarify all this. It is a very intriguing story.
Thanks!
@ great show btw. Love your channel. Keep it up - we need you.

Fascinating discussion
Fantastic! Thank you very much, Dr. Pitre and Larry.
Gavin certainly has some views on what Racism that are nonstandard by our modern views, but I think they are probably historically true. I was astonished that you took the original down because it was so controversial, versus some of the other interviews that you have had.
I did take it down briefly. But I put it back up almost immediately. And what I put back up was exactly the same video as the original.
The modern mythos we live in that has collapsed all symbolism into merely nothing but a metaphor or a logical parallel to reality seems to me to be the reason many Christians deny the real presence. We live in a world where most people think the symbolic is divorced from reality, and even I at times have succumbed to this way of thinking. I don’t think that this means that the symbolic always has the same bearing on reality as it does in the Eucharist, but modernity and materialism surely do seem to underestimate symbolism.

Fantastic conversation and very much needed
Another reason why we don’t give condideration to dreams is that it seems ‘New Age’ and Catholics are leery of New Age thinking.
Looking forward to reading your book!! Love the great outdoors !! Thank you both kindly. 🙏❤️
I missed this one, happy it’s back up.👍
Excellent interview gentlemen, I think it’s so important for Catholics to cease giving weight to the accusations thrown by the left, they are simply Orwellian tactics.
Fearful symmetry between the "body positive" assessment of incidents observed at a pride parade, and the body negativity, or absence of bodies, in minimalist church architecture (icons, statues, ultimately parishioners). Surely these separate portions of the conversation are somehow linked.
Great point!
Scolding voices say the church should be more body friendly; but then they build these inhuman sanctuaries.
Love the passionate dialogue
