    Video is great and appreciate the help on how to do basic defense as a beginner since i was a bit clueless past the (discard what is already discarded), plus i always thought that its not really worth it most of the time ruin your own hand in the chances of someone else winning, since they are already one step away from it, so might as well push the attack, as 2nd worst case scenario is a exhaustive draw and have tenpai points. Also another way to think of it is that by some miracle of chance you are both winning on the same wait and a doble ron lessens the impact or maybe even draw a win

    One funny thing is to reach tenpai by calling riichi tile and win on their next discard. As a little bonus, calling prevents ippatsu.

    I would add some safety tiers: SS safety tier: 100% safe against any riichi or player with opened hand. SSS safety tier: the tile discarded by kamicha right before your turn.

    The thing about 4th place rate is that there is a good chance to get 25-30 out of 100, even if it's actually 20% (my is 21% in 350 hanchans). It may take a long time to get positive change. On the other hand, sometimes you get an explosive growth.

    For future viewers: Taatsu means pair of tiles that can become a run with one more tile. There are 3 types. Side wait: 23, 34, 56 etc these have two tiles that can complete a run (23 can be completed with 1 or 4). This is the strongest taatsu, try to always keep this in hand Middle wait: 13,24,57,79 etc these have one middle tile left to complete a run (13 needs 2 to complete, 57 needs 6) Edge wait: 12,89 these have one terminal tile and can be completed with one tile (3 for 12, 7 for 89) this is the weakest taatsu

    Very informative video. All your videos are wonderfull. I got a question. I see why the no extra tile shape is better compare to the extra tile shape. However, it is really a different IIshanten and if so, why ? Because an other exemple is a Sticky IIshanten with one or both floating tile form Nobetan with already existing group. This will also increase the waiting pattern to go tenpai, as the no extra tile vs extra tile situation, but the Nobetan containing Sticky IIshanten is not considered as a different type of IIshanten. Correct ? So is there a reason why in the first case, we give an other name to the IIshanten because the ''floating'' tile is adjacent to one groupe and not in the second case ? That is working on me mind since a while an if you can share what you think about this it would be very appreciate.

    The opening problem: it is interesting that the efficiency calculator disagrees, preferring to discard 6s over 4m. The rationale here is that the tile acceptance remains very similar in iishanten, but (34 vs 35), but actually completing the hand is slightly faster with the former. Comparing the options: 1. The "average" cases are all exactly the same, leading to a tenpai waiting on 6 tiles. 2. The best case is better for keeping 4m: keeping 4m allows to draw 3m, discard 6p and be waiting on 11 tiles (245m). 3. The worst case is also better for keeping 4m: drawing another 4m, for example, leads to a shanpon wait on 4 tiles, while discarding 4m and drawing 3p leads to waiting on 3m or the last 6p (only 3 tiles). On the other hand, 3p, one of the more likely tiles to be drawn here, leads to a far better acceptance at tenpai after discarding 4m (8 vs 3). Of course, other players' discards will factor in heavily here, but I thought it is worth mentioning this here. What do you think?

    • @MahjongSamurai
      @MahjongSamurai 4 місяці тому

      Thank you for your excellent observation! I agree with the point you raised. From a practical perspective, there is not a huge difference in expected value whether discarding the 6s or the 4m, and it is appropriate to judge according to the situation. As you mentioned, in order to ensure strictness, I should have pointed out these things in the video as well. However, I still strongly recommend choosing to discard the 4m. It is practical, with fewer mistakes, and will ultimately lead to an improvement in performance. In mahjong, it is more important to be able to consistently score 90 points than to aim for 100 points unrealistically. On this channel, I would like to focus on explanations that help viewers become practically stronger and easier to understand in the videos, and discuss more complex topics in the comments section like here. Thank you again for your excellent question!👍

    I didn't know that some of these concepts were part of genuine Mahjong theory. Essentially, my experience with this video is that I excitedly came in to see what I could be doing to improve my plays. Then I very quickly realized that I'm already engaging in certain parts of 5 Block Theory already. To a certain degree, I've been following your discard hierarchy on a more intuitive basis--meaning that I didn't know that some of my discard schemes completely aligns with 5 Block Theory. Up until now, they've just felt like correct discards to make! Even though that's true, it's also true that there's a lot about this theory that I still have yet to fully understand. Either way, it's really nice to know that I seem to be on the right track to improving my play! I'll do my best to learn this theory, but it's still fun to make risky plays sometimes. If over half my starting hand is honors and terminals, _why not_ go for 13 Orphans? lol

    • @ruskerdax5547
      @ruskerdax5547 2 місяці тому

      It's funny, I've been playing riichi mahjong one evening a week for about six months now, and basically everything in this video is something I just kind of intuitively learned after playing a bunch of games. I wouldn't have thought to express it with "okay, I have 4/5/6 blocks..." but when I look at a hand, I can just sort of tell what needs to be prioritized. I'm assuming that's the case, anyway, because each time it was asking which tile I would discard, I was correct! The only exception, of course, is when you need to start considering risk/reward (I'm down in points and it's near the end, should I go for that dora or all triples?) or when looking at what others have discarded and figuring which to discard to maximize the success of an impending fold. Also, I have never got 13 Orphans, and only tried earnestly once, but I have heard that it's generally not worth trying until you have *at least* 10 tiles, ideally 11. I hope you get it someday!

      @@ruskerdax5547 things that i really struggled with is definitely when to make a call, when i should open my hand to be exact and whether chasing for a yakuman is actually the right thing to do or just a stupid dream.

    • @ruskerdax5547
      @ruskerdax5547 2 місяці тому

      @@Arroganze for sure! I think those things all pretty much come naturally. I am always thinking about which yaku I'm going for based on what I think is most likely, influenced by what my current score is at that stage in the game. Whenever I make a call opening my hand, I either already have a yaku established or I'm banking on it as very likely and making a calculated risk. Same thing goes with yakuman, but generally it's not even worth trying unless you are already close at the opening of the round, and it's something you pretty much need to decide right away at the start. The nice thing is that when you do go for it that way, you can often learn quickly whether you have any hope, and if you don't, you're usually in a good position to play defensively.

    Thank you for helping us how to read the stats. Seriously, my Mahjong skill is really freaking bad since all three stats except for Call Rate are bad. In Mahjong Soul, my deal-in rate is 15.06% and my 4th place rate in South is over 28%, and I really need to improve the stats. Usually, a lot of deal-in situation comes from being offensive while opponent is Riichi and right on time my hand is tenpai, then most of the time if my hand is closed I choose to chasing Riichi with the opponent and most of the time I lost that duel by dealing into the opponent Riichi.

    • @MahjongSamurai
      @MahjongSamurai 6 місяців тому

      Thank you for your question! And sorry for I did not explain the detail in that folding video. It is because, fundamentally, safety levels are 3-7<2,8<1,9. This depends on the pattern of the opponent's potential waiting hand. For example, with 8 bamboo, there are 4 patterns: 8 single wait, 8 shanpon wait, 79 closed wait, and 67 side wait. On the other hand, in the case of 3 pin, there are 5 patterns: 3 single wait, 3 shanpon wait, 24 closed wait, 45 side wait, and 12 edge wait. Compared to 3 pin, 8 bamboo has fewer patterns that can lead to the opponent winning, making it a safer choice.

    • @user-xs1bv6ns5b
      @user-xs1bv6ns5b 2 місяці тому

      @@MahjongSamurai Sorry, but I have to disagree with your judgment. I think 3p is safer than 8s: 3 single wait: This is unlikely because he would have a side wait with 4, but the opponent discarded 4 afterward, so this case won't apply. 3 shanpon wait: This is also unlikely because he would have a 334 shape with 4, and since he discarded 4, this case won't apply. 24 closed wait: This may happen. 45 side wait: This may happen. 12 edge wait: This is unlikely because I would choose to discard 1 instead of 4 in a 124 shape to keep flexibility when drawing a 5. So, in total, with 8s, we have 8 single waits, 8 shanpon waits, 79 closed waits, and 67 side waits, which makes 4 cases. With 3p, we have 24 closed waits and 45 side waits, which makes 2 cases. Thus, 3p is safer.

    Wait. Could somebody explain to me the situation at 4:31? The advice is - to destroy Tempai with wait for 2-5 sow while there is only 1 winning tile left. The proposal is to wait for 5 sow(a winning tile for an abondined tempai) to create a new tempai, with a wait for 3-6 pin, which at best wouldb be awaut for 6 tiles. What's the point? Like you see? You are destroying a tempai, then you need a tile with which you could have won, to get another tempai. What have I missed?

  • @1Rook1600
    @1Rook1600 7 місяців тому

    How does this come into play in regards to the 5 block theory video you posted? Since if we go by those rules, in the first example at 1:48, that would be a 4 block hand, (4567m, 4567p, 223s, 678s) -> we should discard something from one of the 4-tile complex shape, not the 3s, if I understand corectly.

    • @MahjongSamurai
      @MahjongSamurai 7 місяців тому

      Thank you for asking a great question again! This hand is Sticky Shape (explained in my 4-shapes in 1-away video), and we can see the 3s is an isolated tile because we should see 2s as a pair in Sticky shape. Therefore, comparing isolated tile(3s) and 4 tiles shape(4567m, 4567p), we can discard 3s. P.S. In this case, we can also see the hand as 5 blocks (ex. 45m, 67m, 456p, 223s, 678s). In cases like the present example, where there are multiple ways to count the number of blocks, such as 4 or 5 blocks (or 5 or 6 blocks), it is optimal to proceed with the calculation considering it as 5 blocks.

  • @1Rook1600
    @1Rook1600 7 місяців тому

    Thank you for the videos! I am a bit confused if this works everytime, since some complex shapes can be counted in ways that give diferent points. For example: 56677 can be either: - multiple ways to arrange it to give 2 points: 56, 67, 7 or 5, 66, 77 - one way that gives 3 points: 567, 67 Is there a rule that decides how we should count them correctly?

    • @MahjongSamurai
      @MahjongSamurai 7 місяців тому

      Thank you for your great question! And sorry for my delay in replying. In that case, we should count it as 3 points. When multiple points can be counted, always count the maximum point.

Though, if I were to tell you the tips for the fastest Tenpai in Seven Pairs, keeping the following types of tiles in your hand will make it easier to reach Tenpai quickly: - Honor tiles - Tiles that are not visible in the discarded tiles - Tiles near the early discards of your opponents (for example, if 2m is discarded in the second turn, keep 1m and 3m in your hand) I hope you can look forward to and patiently await the creation of the video on Seven Pairs!
