I'm planning to build a similar size table but, I'm wondering if using those over 1kw servo motors are necessary when there's no force cutting through the material as it's the case with a cnc router or milling machine for example. How do you calculate the power size of the motors?

Thank you for taking the time to share your time and knowledge. I currently have a 4'X8' CNC plasma table I am going to dual purpose with a DIY fiber laser addition. I should be receiving my 1500 watt set up sometime next week. I understand the differences regarding assist gases, but regarding an air compressor, I currently have a 220v / 60 gallon / 155 psi compressor which produces very dry air thank to a great set up. I keep hearing if using an air compressor I need some $5,000 dollar 255 psi compressor for a laser set up. I have high CFM's and my compressor has yet to drop below 100 psi output on the largest of jobs. I do not understand because there is only so much that is going to flow out of the laser nozzle. You may not be able to help me if you use O2 or N2, which I am sure to incorporate later. Just want to get started. Would I be ok with what I have? Thank you so much!

@lpfdemt which controller are you gonna run with the laser? Regarding the air compressor I know that you need at least 10-15 bar compressor for a commercial use! just out of curiosity, why are you switching from the closed loop steppers to the servos? The tuning situation is exactly why I keep using closed loop steppers. There are a few auto tuning set ups out there, however, trying to tune the dual motor gantry set up keeps me sticking with the steppers. Tuning the servos to almost perfection seems like a difficult process and do you really ever know if they are optimally tuned? How do you know? Great job on this build, can't wait to watch your journey.

Congratulations on all of your endeavors. Although it may not be the easiest or best way to go. The accomplishment of getting sheetcam to work with a general cnc controller (centroid) and what goes into that is truly inspiring. And I think you did an impressive job! 👏
