This has struck a chord. I also am a trained geologist, I have all the degrees including a PhD. I was fortunate to have supports in place to finish (though it took way longer than it should have). And after everything I fought so hard to finish and produce an exceptional piece of research I found that I had zero job opportunities. I even won awards for my research for both my MSc and PhD. I took a long hard look at those awards and the list of successful people who had won them. They are department heads, oil executives, run provincial mapping offices, have teaching awards, etc. I weighed the pro and cons of staying in a system that was male dominated and looked at what the vision for my life was. I knew firmly I wouldn't look back on my life and say oh my biggest regret is not being a geologist. I also knew that if I was one of those people on that list of award winners I could do anything I set my mind to and be successful. So I opened a clothing boutique, put together a comprehensive digital strategy and then covid hit and I was not prepared. The following years were tough but they gave me grit and I build my business from zero to 500K. I was the solopreneur who learned how to do everything and anything so that I could make it go and grow. Unfortunately, in Canada we hit a major recession in October 2023 (that they still wont admit is happening) and many businesses like mine have folded. In my city I was the 8th clothing boutique to close since the beginning of 2024. Listening to you and your story is truly inspiring! Here is to new beginnings, fostering a whole new business, hooking those big fish clients and watching our businesses thrive.
