Repairing a Broken 9V Battery Connector - Vintage 1970's MXR Phase 90

This video has no audio except for pedal demo at the end . This vintage 1970's script font "Bud Box" MXR Phase 90 came to me with a broken original battery connector, so I decided to film the repair process and hopefully help other folks who run into the same issue. It's a super simple job, about 5 minutes start to finish.

I learned so much from these lessons summer '06. Wasn't online though, had to buy the magazine....learned a lot from all the interviews too. They tracked Stadium Arcadium to tape, right as I upgraded my 4 track tascam to a digital 8 track Fostex. Then the Foo Fighters did ESP&G on tape, and I was bummed I switched to digital. For people new to recording, the secret is finding the 10 or 12 instruments (drums, elec. drums, perc., clean guitar, dist. guitar, bass, piano, acoustic, synth, vocals, etc.) Blend up and out from the drums. Keep things pulled back. Double track. No compression. EQ on everything. No excessive effects. Master reverb only. Higher tempo 100+. You can do this with Ableton, Reaper, Garageband, hardware, free trials, anything. There are a ton of free daws. Mic your guitars, go direct with bass. Mic a drum kit with overheads, record multiple people singing harmonies into the same mic, add air, cut less and get perfect takes more often. Tune down a half step. Sampling has a place. MIDI is extraordinarily powerful. All you need is a crappy used keyboard with MIDI in/out and a cable. The VSTs are great. But trim your shit down. Write music with the same tools over and over so you can develop your sound with those tools. If you switch tools too often, you'll be good at using lots of tools, but not so good at harnessing the energy to create powerful music. 22 years of guitar. No one ever cared about my rig. Guitar, cable, 2 channel amp. Everyone is spending too much time being their own Software Support Specialist that they're not sitting down and writing songs, or having experiences to write songs about. Live your life. Track your music with microphones. Forget about the noise. People will get over it. Rock n roll is in the heart. Not the sound or the image. It questions itself. People show up for it, pay for it, and consider it a big deal to have live rock music in their backyards. Write music for the people. Not for their money. Write music in celebration of our existence. Write music that goes into the machine, not out of the machine. Peace!

I have the same issue and I m pretty pissed off. what a waste of money
I disagree when you say that the card is unnecessary. If anything, at least proves that a real human looked at your watch and at least it’s something to verify the authenticity. It is more peace of mind for you rather than adding resale value when you sell it in the future.
It’s only as good as the person inspecting it-if someone were to send in a vintage Daytona with an older replacement dial for example, I guarantee that something like that slips past the inspector. They are probably not well versed on things like dial variations and what should and shouldn’t be there on certain references. For your run of the mill Datejusts like the one in the video, it’s probably fine and will add peace of mind for a casual or first time buyer who isn’t a big time Rolex nerd.
Thank God for giving us people like John to show us a slice of heaven and unity.
I'm having a similar issue. The stock cables that comes whith the SSL are too short. I bought a new usb-c cable and the audio doesn't come from my headphones. Bummer..

This just happened to me today... no in or output (including headphones) from the SSL 2 (basically bricked), but its being recognised by my macbook. I've tried reaching out to SSL regarding the repair but I purchased it in 2021 :( tried updating the drivers to V1-3 but the updater doesn't recognise the unit either. Also tried switching the cables and plugin it in via usb hub..nothing

Got it fixed by using other usb ports from my pc, by disconectinc unnecessary usb devices, changing the power setting for the usb root hub by disabling some boxes. (Cant tell you exactly what I did, because my English vocabulary is not the yellow of the egg. so i cant tell you my settings since they are all in german and i cant translate them without help).
It really shouldn't take all that effort just to plug in a USB interface and use it--these SSLs have some issues for certain people for some reason. These are meant to be plug and play devices. I'm just going to start recommending Universal Audio in the comments to anyone else who is having these issues. They're kinda unacceptable considering how mature the technology is and how expensive these interfaces are.
I remember watching this video back in 2007, this was the reason why I bought a sunburst strat and became a musician. I owe this video my life purpose.
Can’t think of a guitarist I like more. He’s a genius.
My two SSL 2 units went totally unusable. First, the LED level lighting acted weirdly, then there was a loud pop when plugging into the computer. The 4k button LED kept lighting up, no matter what I did-pressed down or not. The only workaround to be able to temporarily use it is by pressing the +48v repeatedly until the 4k light goes off. Unfortunately, after a month of use the workaround will no longer work thus rendering your unit unusable. I've contacted SSL about this and they have sent me op amps ICs but those did not work. There is clearly a fault in their design but they won't admit it. If you send your unit for repair they won't accept it because even the engineers their do not know whats wrong with their units. Instead they will offer you a brand new unit for half of the price.
My 4k buttons just started lighting up red a couple days ago and now get no output from anywhere. Presume mine has just died as well?
@@sirstabbyfork9675 Do both 4k led lights remain on even when its not pressed down? If so then you should press the +48v buttons multiple times as fast as you can. You should notice that the 4k lights are somewhat responding to your press. Just make sure that the 4k buttons are not pressed down while doing it or you'll end up not knowing if the 4k lights are off. The downside of it is you'll have to do the workaround again when powering on the interface.

It's outrageous they're not offering to replace the unit, perhaps it's worth trying to bring some attention to this on relevant forums/subreddits to force them to do better or at least try to push ppl away from buying a product that may just decide to cease working when it feels like it
Guys I have the exact same issue with both 4k lights coming on and the device is bricked (no sound, no mic input). All I did was change USB cable and plug it into a 2.0 input. Still unnacceptable in my opinion. And who knows how long this fix will last.

Using same cable with my new Universal Audio interface, zero problems. The SSL just shat the bed for some reason.
We definitely should show this interview to Justin Hawkins... He might learn a couple of things and better understand why so much people love John's music approach.

Any chorus pedal you can afford will get you that effect, but the specific pedal he uses is a Boss CE-1.

Just noticed that you changed the cable 9Which I haven't done yet), but seems really odd that all of a sudden this stops working! I've had it for little under a year and can't believe that it would have crapped out already.
@@DIGOOfficial yeah, I tried that other cable and plugged it into my dongle instead of directly into the Mac mini, and it decided to work. There was no rhyme or reason to any of this and it was incredibly annoying. I've since switched to a UA Volt 176 since it has the option to be externally powered. SSL offered me $70 towards a new unit which I declined. Going to just sell my SSL2. I think it actually works fine, it's just super sensitive to power draw requirements an for whatever reason my system was not able to give it enough power. Maybe my wall voltage dipped that day or something. Dunno.

I’ve reached out to SSL support as the unit is only about a year old, and after trying the change of cable, it still hasn’t resolved the issue. Will post back if I somehow get a fix if it can help others with a similar problem, but at this stage it just seems that the unit might be faulty 🤷🏼♂️
Update: I switched to a different cable I had tried previously during troubleshooting and plugged it into my USB dongle, and the unit is passing audio again. I think it’s either very picky about how much power it receives via the cable plugged into it, what kind of cable is plugged into it, or it is just faulty hardware. Either way it’s not reliable.
Definitely seems like a fault in the driver circuit for line 1/2 outputs, since the line out and headphone "A" circuits share the same DAC channel...probably an op-amp went bad. What a strange failure... Hope you can get it fixed.
