Can you Overwinter Hydrangeas Inside?

Why can't you just bring your macrophylla hydrangeas inside where it is warm for the winter? An unheated shed or garage is ok, but skip the heated indoor space. @TheGardenMouse #garden thegardenmouse #garden #gardening #hydrangea #hydrangeas #overwintering #zone6b #zone7a #planters #hydrangeacare

LOVE those red urns ❤
Brilliant!!! They look so nice not wrapped up!
I like it all! The snowmen, tree, doormat! Festive Nd bright!
I really appreciate all your positive comments! 🙂
Very beautiful 😍 !! I love it 🥰 !! Happy holidays to you and your family 😊🎄🎅🤶💖 .
Thank you!!
@@TheGardenMouseYw 😊💖.
Wow, that is stunning. The eye loves detail and pretty colors.
You’re such a clever girl! Outstanding! I did something on a smaller scale unexpectedly. There were Birch logs stacked in a set 3, tied with tan roping and pine cones , red ribbon and I might just lay in top my rectangular planters by door with lights.
That sounds like a great idea!

I have 2 new hydrangeas in pots and the ground is pretty much froze so I was worried about over Wintering them in pots - video was very helpful!
Garden Mouse, I am subscribed, but your videos never come into my feed! What am I doing wrong?😢
I'm sorry to hear that...How weird! You could check that your notifications are on. Just click on the little "down arrow" next the word "subscribe" under the video. You should then click on the "all" bell. That will notify you when I post something new. Otherwise, I'm not sure!
Love this idea!
Thank you!
That conifer planter does is festive and well placed!
Thanks so much!
I have been pruning my Rose of Sharon trees for 27 years I do it every other year . 🤔🌺🌲🌺🤔 All of my trees are 18 to 20 feet tall. 🙂 The rose of Sharon comes from the Hibiscus family and has a high amount of vitamin C . 🙂🌺🌲🌺🙂 The Rose of Sharon is edible and medical from its leaves and its flowers and its young seed pods. 🤔😃🤔 The rose of Sharon grows quickly and spreads quickly as well . 🙂🌲🌺🌲🙂 I dry the Young leaves and the flowers and make tea out of it. ☕🌿🌺🌿☕ It is wonderful for sore throats. 🤔 It is wonderful for urinary tract infections . 🤔 It is good for high blood pressure and high cholesterol and diabetes . 🤔 The rose of Sharon is beautiful and many insects love the flower 🌺 like the bumble bees and butterflies and hummingbirds . 🙂🌺🙂 God bless the American people . 🙏🇺🇲🙏
Thank you for sharing. Yes, some varieties of Rose of Sharon get HUGE! I'm glad this is a tpe that stays on the small side. Proven Winners has a new type that stays very columnar.
What’s the secret to have all Hydrangea leaves green and healthy? Is it ok to dead head down to the stems where I can see new couple of buds?
Yes, you are fine to seadhead them to the next couple buds. I find they need tons of water to stay green and not too much sun which will brown the leaf edges.
@ thanks!
I just purchased rose of Sharon in pots from Home Depot. Yes, they were clearance because of the season. It looks dormant for the most part with a few unopened blooms. I live in Tennessee and it’s about to get very cold probably in the next couple of weeks. How do I overwinter this Rose of Sharon in the pot? Do I cover it and leave it inside the garage? Do I cover it and leave it outside where it could possibly get rained and snowed on? Or do I not cover it at all? Thanks
How exciting! When they are fully dormant and have dropped all their leaves, they really don't need much water. They are also pretty hardy. Either way should work. If you leave outside, I would put close to the house so they have a bit of shelter. You'll need to make sure they drain well so the roots don't rot. If you bring into unheated garage, I would wait until they are fully dormant. It is ok to wait until they drop leaves because they bloom on next year's growth anyway. For me, they usually do that by Dec 1st. Then, I would give about a cup of water each month to them. Hope that helps!
Thanks so much! Your videos are awesome!
Fall 2024, weather is unusually warm. Lucky for us gardeners who still have work to do outside😂. My macrophylla hydrangeas are still blooming with big healthy leaves. I'm in zone 6b. I think December 1st will come and go and the mac hydrangea will still be partying 🎉
That was great! I really love these blue conifers! Those will be fun to add whatever Christmas decorations to! Wow! I think I wouldn’t have any problem having a conifer in bigger pots and adding smaller seasonal plants around them . Because winter is usually that time of year there’s no point in looking at the planters outside 😢lol.
I really love that Biltmore Blue! Quite memorable. I love how it has not too many branches but those long needles! Gorgeous!
Hi, great video. I have a potted Hydrangea that is I think called Eclipse Big Leaf? It has dark purple leaves and and reddish-purple blossoms. It is mid November and the leaves, heads, are still intact and do not look like they are dying off yet. We are just starting to get freezing weather, and my area is prone to big freezing winds. I have read that this variety is prone to getting damaged buds in freezing weather, so I brought in into my house. I don't have a garage or shed, but have a room that is not as warm as the rest of my house, so hoping to overwinter it there. If it hasn't dropped leaves yet, and this room is warmer than it was outside, will it keep trying to grow, or eventually drop it's leaves? Should I keep watering it, or maybe cover it to diminish light, and force it to drop it's leaves? This is my first hydrangea so I have no experience. I live on an island in Alaska, and the gardening zone here is 7, but many times it is less, and again the freezing winds. Thank you for any response!
It is so great how you go right into winter fearlessly with your plant collection! Those plant bags are handy and I love how you decided that the conifers can be your outdoor winter plants! I just can’t wait to see where they go and I am not sure if I can. We get blasted with summer sun in front, enough sun in early morning, then later in day in backyard . Where do you keep these over summer is my question. Also, Mr. Maple is clearly the way to go. Thanks, I agree it is really nice for winter!
Congrats!! I’m sure the plants added a lot to the event. Looks like you had a great time
Thank you! It was definitely a unique wedding, but the kids were happy and that was the goal!
Been distracted with other things going on and not had a chance to tune in lately. Great advice in this video. By the way you seem to have lost some weight. I’m glad for you. It’s a lifelong struggle for me so your success is encouraging enjoy the last of fall weather
Good to "see" you back! Thank you for noticing...Yes, I've lost 62 pounds since last February! Can't say I did it on my own, though, I am on one of those shots, Zepbound....Amazing stuff, and I lucked out that my insurance covers it!!
@ great to hear, know you feel more energetic. Keep up the good work
Congratulations to the happy couple! ❤ I am sure they will be very happy! The garden looked beautiful and magical and the support you all showed is lovely too!
Thank you!
I wonder if there are different types of macrophylla hydrangeas? I’ve seen them growing with big Blue, Purple and pink mopheads in Panama, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico and Brazil, big bushes some almost reaching 10 feet tall.
Yes, there are hundreds of macrophylla varieties. Nurseries can only produce so many, so many of the older varieties aren't available now, they just carry the newer types. hydrangeasplus.com has a good selection of some harder to find varieties.
Thanks and it was informative . I was hopeful for a second!
That sucker took energy from your tree all summer. Anytime the growth does not look like the cultivar it’s a sucker from the root stock.
I love hydrangeas but can't have them because the deer like them even better. Couple of weeks ago they raided all my potted plants and I was pretty sad and annoyed, but some are coming back and in this zone they have several warm weeks to recoup, before I take them in. I will admire yours from a distance , great video!
The deer can be such a probem for hydrangeas. I'm lucky, we have an 8-ft fence around the back, so just the bunnies get in!
Would love to see how it is doing?? ❤
Love your kitty themed Christmas decorations, your beautiful Ragdoll cats that are so well behaved, and even the Eddie Walker Christmas decorations with cats! Just gorgeous!🐈🐈⬛🐈🐈⬛❤🐱
Thank you! You can tell we are cat people! 🙂You must be, too!
What zone can these hydrangeas be grown in?
What zone are you growing in?🌸💮🌺
Good advice from Dr. Maple. That is a sucker from the root stock.🍁😊🍁
Love this! I once found a hummingbird nest in my fuchsia hanging basket. I had to move it to a silk fuchsia hanging basket so I could water the real hanging basket without disturbing the eggs/ babies. 😊❤🪶Why don't they have a hummingbird emoji?
Have you got an update of what it looks like now? I would love to see it 😊 i am going to do this next August... I have 1 1/2 ft ones that i am in the process of doing now, just gotta wait till spring now!! Update update update...😂😂😂

Thank you for the shout out and kind words.
That will be so eye catching in the winter months!
Hope so!
I like your grow bag. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks, I will look! Never heard of!
But we are older and wiser gardeners now! I had to have a fuschia color Butterfly bush that is supposed to grow to just 5 feet tall and wide this fall. I was reminded that I gave away a yellow one years ago! Ah well… Those are all cute! Mr Maple is a lot of fun to look at!

I love those urns! Can’t wait to see what you do with them next. Something I’ve done to keep the drainage holes open - I cut squares of wire mesh a little larger than the hole and hot glue them over the hole. Works great!
Terrific idea to hot glue it!!!
Is there a video or article that explains why this method is beneficial? ❣❣❣
I talk about it in other videos in that play list, but I don't know of anywhere to read about it...
