Yes!!! The level K material for math and L.A. is not balanced. I have use TGATB math with my boys (now in 2nd and 4th grades) since the beginning and it has gone swimmingly. With my older son I first had to use Masterbooks level K and THEN TGATB level pre-K, before starting TGATB level K language arts. The curriculum was a bit overwhelming for him, though, so after 1st grade we switched to Learning Language Arts Through Literature, which has also been working well, but I'm considering going back to TGATB since it is good and effective, only has 120 lessons instead of 180, and I can download it for free, BUT your review helped me to remember some of those cons that we encountered as well, so I probably will end up just sticking with what's been working. Thank so much for posting this!
Yes! Bring on all the graphic novel adaptations. Dog man has turned my non reader into a reader… but some graphic novels are a miss. We are loving investi gators thanks to Ephraim!
My now 17 yea told lived Animal Farm so much we moved it up as a family read aloud so he could share it with his siblings. I just picked up that graphic novel for him to read and he is pretty excited about it
Grab the graphic novel: amzn.to/40TufOR
HAve you ever Vanderbeekers by karina yan glaser. ITS a great book
Yes!
First year homeschooling my 8th grade son. Health and falling behind were a couple reasons I decided to keep him home. I realized he had gaps in math and we’ve spent the last few months finding out what they were. Trying to find a curriculum that will be a good fit for him is difficult. His brother, 7th grade, is working independently in Saxon Math. I quickly figured out Saxon and any curriculum that is very text heavy will be a hindrance for him. A friend mentioned this curriculum and I’m so thankful for her suggestion and for your video!! Despite the comic sans (I know my son will mock that! 😂), I think this book may be what he needs to get back up to speed and boost confidence.
Hate to say it but, you get used to the Comic Sans after awhile. 🤣 We're still going strong with this and are just about to start book four!
@ That is great to hear that you’re still using this curriculum! Volume 1 should be arriving tomorrow, can’t wait to have it in my hands and start it with my son next week!
@@IntentionalHomeschoolingAlso, I subscribed. 😊 I’m also in Canada and am homeschooling kindergarten, grade 7 and 8. I will have to check out more of your videos for grade 1 and 9. It’s nice that you have some students that are ahead of where we’re at.
Such great suggestions! My daughter loves books with similar themes as to the ones mentioned in this video! I just saved a bunch on the Libby app. I think we’ll add the Amari one to our literature course. If it’s like Harry Potter my daughter will love it! I feel like my daughter would love to talk books with your son. 😊
Looking forward to watching this again but with my almost 14 year old and see what she wants to read after. Her favorite books (that she has reread multiple times over the past 2 years) King Arthur and Her Nights by KM Shea She is also rereading a favorite series of mine- Pride and Prejudice + Persuasion retellings BUT WITH DRAGONS Pemberly by Maria Grace is the first book in the series. For her independent history she is reading Voyage of the Sandpiper series by Jessica Glasner It starts state side in WW2 Christian historical fiction and a lot more information from the Jewish side of things. But the series goes past WW2 and ends up in Europe, Australia, China, the South Pacific…
I've read "one for the Murphys" a few weeks ago and loved it. Maybe raeca would like it too. It's about a 12 year old girl in fostercare and it's very heart hitting (i don't know how to wright it correctly) and funny at the same time.
We both LOVED One for the Murphys! Have you read Pictures of Hollis Woods? It's also a great one.
@@IntentionalHomeschooling Nope not yet, thanks for the reccomendation ;)
Great video
I read Restart too
I have been waiting for this!!!!
😊 I hope you got some good recommendations!
Aughter loved the lunae chronicles
That's a great series! I think Raeca has only read book one, I'll have to pressure her into finishing it!
My older teen daughter read West With Giraffes by Lynda Rutledge and loved it, might be one that yours would enjoy as well. P.S. we love Ally Carter YA books, thanks for introducing us to them
I don't think I've ever heard of West with Giraffes, I'll look it up and let her know, thanks! 😊
I'm reading Not if I Save you First by Ally Carter right now and enjoying how fast paced it is!
Yay, it's a fun book!
You two have helped me see that I love free verse books! I have read Hidden, Alone, and Moo. Are there other good ones?!
* imagine me rubbing my palms together * Well, you have come to the right place! Here are some of my favorites: - Starfish by Lisa Fipps - Ode to a Nobody by Caroline Brooks DuBois - Worst Case Collin by Rebecca Caprara - Forget Me Not by Ellie Terry - Closer to Nowhere by Ellen Hopkins I hope you enjoy them all!
I love novels-in-verse! I''m currently reading my 45th one, but am too early in to know if I can recommend it. Hidden and Alone are both amazing. I believe a sequel/companion novel to Alone is coming out this year. Ode to a Nobody is one I really enjoyed as well! The Road to After by Rebekah Lowell is amazing. I am 98% of the time a with-my-eyes reader, but the audio book is fantastic! My favorite from last year is Macy McMillan and the Rainbow Goddess by Shari Green. Oh gosh, so many more! I'm trying not to overwhelm. So I will shush now. :)
@ Thank you! I did recently read Starfish, so I will check out these other options!
@ I love all the suggestions! Thank you!
Ephraim did a great job describing the books he has read. I put a few of these on hold while watching the video. Thank you!
I hope you all enjoy the books!
Raeca is so sweet! I need to read more of Susie Finkbeiner's books. The All American is the only one I read and loved it. To hear that it wasn't your favorite of hers makes me feel like I'm missing out. Haha
Maybe we'll have opposite tastes for Susie Finkbeiner but I think you're in for a real treat with her others!
@IntentionalHomeschooling I'm very excited! I'll let you know what I think. 😊
I have boys under 10, so Ephraims recommendations are more their speed, but I’m adding Restart and Wednesday Wars to the list. I can’t believe how big your two oldest have gotten. Time flies.
Yes, they are getting so old! Restart and TheWednesday Wars are two that I want Ephraim to read in the next year. I've been holding out for The Wednesday Wars because I want him to love it.
Your daughter is so pretty. Natural beauty.
I love that he is into books. I think most kids just want to be on their phones now days.
I love how much he loves stories as well!
Ooh i just made a big library order from this list! Ephraim is a natural on the screen. Wow!
Haha, I hope your boys enjoy some of these!
I love your kids book reviews
Thanks, I love having them come on!
@ I love when they have book rec because as a middle grade reader it helps
He might like the Dragons in a bag series! My 12 year old liked them 😊
Thanks, we'll check that out!
This is our first year homeschooling and we have been using The Good and the Beautiful for our 2nd and Kindergartener. I completely resonate with your points (for the ones we have experience with!). Thank you for sharing, this is helping clarify some things and troubleshoot.
This was such a lovely video. Thank you for taking the time to make it. I love love love Sally and all of her words. She has been instrumental in my own journey. She is a gem. As far as content from you? This kind of content...heartfelt, sitting with ideas, what is working, bringing back the joy of homeschooling. All of it! God bless you!
Has he seen the Captain Underpants movie? I had low expectations but ended up LOVING it so much!
No, he hasn't! We'll have to check it out!
I positively love this and his eclectic reading!
😊
I totally get you. I might use kindergarten math for my kindergartener and something else for language. I find the language advanced to where I have to start my second grader right from level k then move up from there. Never used the good and the beautiful so gona give this a try and we are trying the free printables. If it doesn't work we will move on to something else. I do like the all in one so it's not so overwhelming! I have always used math with confidence and just might stick with that instead of switching math.
I’ve only read the first Amari
Maybe Hearth & Story for your 5th/6th grader?
Sorry I keep commenting. My son loves anything by Dustin Brady!
We'll check him out, thanks!
Thank you for the recommendations! My son will need to watch this video. He is turning 11 in a few months. My son loves Dogman, got him into reading.
Same with Ephraim! It was that series that made him realize that he could read!
@@IntentionalHomeschooling yes!
There is another book coming out in The Wild Robot series this year!!! "The Wild Robot Island" I believe that is what the next book is called. Our family loves those books. We are listening to the 3rd book now. 😊
That was fun! He is so cute.
😊 Thanks Erin!
This was fun to watch! My almost nine-year-old boy agreed with several of the recommendations and wanted to recommend Hank the Cowdog, EB White’s books, and Tale of Despereaux & Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo. Thanks for sharing, Ephraim!
Say thanks to your son for those recommendations!
We have been using TGTB math 4 yrs. We love it.
I think my 9 yr old would love all of these books but he doesn’t just pick up books on his own. Has he always read a lot of books?
The key for Ephraim has been audiobooks (for novels). He's a very active boy and enjoys being able to do something with his hands so listening to novels is great for him. The graphic novels are usually his pre-bedtime reads.
My eleven-year-old is always looking for great reads. I’ll share this with him. Thank you both!
I hope you find some he enjoys!
We loved the Secret Lake Series. There is 3 of them and my son and I definitely put this as our favourite.
We'll check those out, thanks!
Great recommendations! My son loves dog man. I bet he would love the I survived graphic novels and the investi gators. Thanks!
I hope he does! 😊
We read The Wild Robot twice and the sequel (not the 3rd) years ago. When the movie came out my now 12 year old was so excited and it was so good! He even said “movies don’t usually make me tear up but this was a good one”… mama & big sister sobbed 😂
Oh yeah, I'll have to be prepared when we watch the movie!
I will share these with my almost 11 year old. Thank you both!
I hope you get a few good recommendations!
Thanks for all the recommendations, Ephraim!
😊
Gary D. Schmidt's books are all so wonderful. The Labors of Hercules Beal is the only book of his I haven't read but it sure sounds good! Nice list!
They are so wonderful, my personal favorites are The Wednesday Wars and Okay for Now!
The Wild Robot movie adaptation came out September 2024. I haven't watched it yet, but the trailer for it looks amazing!
We haven't watched it yet either!
I love your channel chantel ❤❤❤ also i love ur sons suggestions like u recommended dog man and my son loved it ALOT! 😅😅
Aww, thanks!
We stopped using TG&TB several years ago for all of the same reasons. My kids were bored to tears with the unrealistic perfect stories. The busy, colorful pages and jumping from topic to topic were just too much for my kids, too. This year, for language arts, (grades 5 and 7) we've been having success with Fix It Grammar, Progeny Press Lit guides( we discuss the study guide questions together), and Writing and Rhetoric from Classical Academic Press. And then, of course, lots of independent reading, audiobooks, and family read-alouds.
Some of our all-time family favorite read-alouds are: The Dimwood Forest series, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH series, The Wingfeather Saga, and Little Pilgrim's Progress.
Thanks for sharing!!!
Something I notice after switching to Easy Peasy homeschool is that I really think the 120 lessons hurts TGTB. Easy Peasy has 180 lessons and there is no need to rush or cram so much in.
I've never checked out Easy Peasy!
Yeeessss ! My 6 yr old in 1st grade could not do the K LA ....way to challenging for beginning kindergartener imo but now as a first grader he's flying through it.
