Creating a Blender Short Film (Shot 1: Motel)
In this video I'll explain how I created a motel scene in Blender for my next short film. I'm proud of Nowhere (my last short film) and what I made, but I'll admit, it didn't have much of a story, so that's what I'm going to do differently with this short film. Also, sorry I've been off UA-cam for so long, a lot has happened and I've been working a lot but I'm glad to be back. Hopefully, I'll be making a lot more videos over the next couple of months. Anyways, thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed.

    Great job bro, looks cool. You could make this look even better just by geting rid of the sharp edges on the ship mesh and adding details by extruding some panels on the sides following the reference image for example (maybe try using the discombobulator addon for quick rough details). You should also watch "A Quick Trick For Extra Realism" by DECODED on using the ambient oclussion node to make the ship "connect" to the ground. Also try adding some randomness on the soldiers to avoid them looking like a perfect grid. Play a bit with the lighting (with an hdri or nishita sky and then some volumetrics, it is resource consuming but it really sells it) and contrast to get more dynamic range and use objects behind the camera to cast shadows on the ship if you want to emulate the lighting from the reference image. The look of this film is SOO FKN DIFFICULT to recreate btw. Just trying to help with the best intentions, I could recommend you some videos on getting the look right that explain it 1000x better than I would ever do, if you want to :)

      @@EJ3D_Art Here are some vids that can help. Also note: Use the Agx color space for rendering instead of the filmic, It's new to blender, I just learned this yesterday and it works like a charm. Also, instead of adding those straight lines in the texturing, try copying the grooves of the ship by extruding some panels, and then try to degrade the edges a bit. "Easy Sci-Fi Structures and Panels | Blender tutorial" - Littlerolz (Discombobulator addon) "How I Remade Dune in 24 Hours using VFX" - Josh Toonen "Photorealism in Blender: Unlocked" - Scenefiller "A Quick Trick For Extra Realism" - DECODED -For the sand texture: PBR approach: "How to Tile a Texture Without Repetition - Blender Tutorial" - Blender Guru Procedural approach: "Procedural Desert Landscape - Blender Geometry Nodes Tutorial" - BlenderDude (i liked this one, you do you) Glad I could help :)

    If you spend hours working on the textures for these simple surfaces then you are clearly doing something wrong and you are wasting your time. Time that could have been spent on creating other details for the scene that have a stronger impact on image quality.

    • @EJ3D_Art
      @EJ3D_Art 5 місяців тому

      I mean you’re right, I did spend too much time working on the textures, and I could do it a lot quicker now. However, I think it was worth my time because I learnt a lot from it and the texture was a huge part of the image that I needed to get right.

    you almost got it . i think your problem here is color space . you need to transform it to rec 709 from filmic or agx and probably this movie has a film print , wich i asume will be kodak 2383 and some compositing , flares , lens dirt , glow etc . i hope it helps .

    That's a pretty cool render ! I just wanted to let you know that using the array modifier to clone the army is very unoptimzed because you are modifying the mesh to add all of the clones in real geometry The superior way to do it, that will be infinitly lighter and even allow for realtime playback if animated, is to scatter instances of the mesh of the soldier on the point of a grid using geometry nodes, you can even plug a random node in the scale for subtle scale variation in the soldiers. Had the same problem 2 years ago on a big projet, so I had to share that tip X)
