Bosch Battery Range Test Part 1.
Переглядів 195Місяць тому
Last batch of videos to be made in and around Oldham & Rochdale and believe me, I've made plenty! On this one (part 1) I set off on a mission to compare the miles covered in Eco on my then - new Cube E Bike, to present day five years later. In March 2019, I squeased 78.5 miles out of it. But, has the battery degraded much in just over 5 years? Filmed in June 2024.
Nairn, Scotland.

On this video I'm actually paddling in the sea, but not at Nairn. It's a few days later at Lossiemouth, which is a bit further along the coast heading east. This video (for the first time) features some old camcorder film from May 1995. And from what I remember way back in May 1995, the weather was a lot nicer!

Cube's 5th Birthday: Middleton via Heywood.
Переглядів 3576 місяців тому
Unlike Jaguar i Paces that run away with themselves (and there are plenty out there that have) the Cube remains normal and unflappable. So I give it a good run to Heywood and then on to Middleton and back looking at various annoying new building sites along the way. Back home I have a chat about the Cube's new back wheel which, by the way, is a load of c p! Filmed on the 19th Feb '24.

After a little brake trouble I discover the Cube's front brake disc is worn. So on this video, I try for the first time to replace the disc. But of course, this is one of my videos where nothing runs as smoothly as expected.

In this video: I take my clunky electric Cube Hybrid with its dodgy cyclometer on a bike ride to Todmorden to look at and film around a refurbished bungalow. I get overtaken on an upward slope by a non e bike. I'm also generally going uphill and against the wind. Also, we visit a reservoir up in the hills and later, look at an old stone, abandonned mill. Hi Derek I've just watched this film, and then all three 2nd editions of the range test films, I actually remember watching the 1st edition. I cannot actually believe that was 5 years ago! Again Derek, very enjoyable watching and again, incredible commentary, moving seamlessly from one subject to another - brilliant! I'll tell you one observation that you mentioned some years back, and by god you're right... Trees now and then? What panoramic views we had in the 70s/80s! Have we just gone on a mad planting spree since? And as for your observations on EVs, my comment totally mirrors yours - "Don't get me started!". I can't think of a better phrase for them, well I can!! Sorry I've not been around for a while - I've been so so busy with lots of distractions..... But one thing you mentioned in your range test video was you had your suspicions regarding UA-cam not notifying everybody of certain people's videos, well on this occasion I'm not totally sure what's happened my end, it turned out that I've somehow unsubscribed from the legendary Derek Taylors channel? I absolutely and categorically have to say " it wasn't me Guv!". I actually think our grandson Dylan who often grabs my phone/tablet after I've just watched a UA-cam video is to blame here and maybe this time it's not UA-cam's fault, who knows? But alas, great to be back Mate, I do hope you're both still going strong, bad back notwithstanding of course! Cheers Derek

      Hi Daron. Lovely to hear off you. How's Gale? My back is damaged between my shoulder blades believe it or not whilst straining on the bog! lol. I thought I'd pulled a muscle but it is No 9 joint that showed up as damaged on an x ray. That happened a day or two before I made the Noddsdale video. When I overbalanced turning round it was actually the usual problem with my lower back that I hurt. The day after I was okay. I'm having a DEXA scan on Thursday to check whether my bones are falling to pieces lol. Now then. Are you sitting down. Get ready ------ we are moving to Scotland! We've sold our bungalow and have found a brand new 3 bedroom house in Aviemore. Which means our motorhome has to go 911 years of motorhoming) so it will be a sad day when it finally goes. We've been places that we wouldn't have gone to if not for Mr Motorhome and other motorhomes we've owned. We have someone coming round later today to have a dekko at it. But as usual, I have a strange feeling that it will all go pearshaped but that's just me being a mithering old sod (73 yesterday) But it's now or never before I'm too old. I've done a lot of filming already around Aviemore and Glenmore so it will be a challenge to keep new films coming. Especially without a motorhome to go to new filming locations. There would be nowhere to park it. No drive. Just a parking area nearby. So if you two are ever brave enough to venture this far you'll have to give us a visit. Cheers and best wishes.

      Wow! Derek you've decided to actually take the plunge and leave lovely Oldham behind..... How could you? No joking apart well done! How did you finally come to this decision, obviously regarding throwing the family narrative into the equation? I know that was where you both had the big stumbling block, how did you manage to square that one? I've got a ton of questions for you regarding this news Mate, I'll give you a bell this week sometime if that's okay. And of course we'll come and visit, that would be fabulous Cheers again both of you

    Hi Derek, thanks to this video, my partner and I did this ride on Saturday. We were on our way back down south after a few days in the Lakes and thought we'd stop off. I parked at Hest Bank beach and instead of going to Heysham, after we reached Morecame we turned inland and followed route 69 along the former railway track and then back to Hest Bank along the canal on route 6, a total of 10.5 miles. We stopped off and took a photo of Eric Morecambe's statue, which has now been replaced. It was a lovely ride, thanks for the inspiration! Keep the video's coming.

      Hi Tony. Way back in 1968 (winter) I was 17 and me and my tutor plumber Mike got dropped off in Heywood at Beddoes to leave our tools and go home on our own (really nice boss lol) It was dark, chucking it down and I was on my lightweight Raleigh sports bike with a Miller light for company. I didn't know where I was but headed to Middleton. I must have turned left at Slattocks (long before the motorway roundabout) and followed a road that turned into a track. It was wet and pitch black. I somehow ended up on Oozewood Rd. I knew where I was when I saw the summit on the left. If you look at Google maps you'll see a load of tracks going here there and everywhere. Further up the road passed what was the 'All In One', there's a right turn which takes you all the way over to Oldham Rd, Rochdale. It's called Thornham New Rd. Sounds impressive but it isn't. Have a look. The Thornham Rd track's first right turn takes you all the way to Middleton Rd, Royton. Cheers.

    My cube touring hybrid that my partner bought me for my birthday 4 years ago has never been ridden apart from 7 miles on it. Its been stuck outside under a bike tarp for 4 years. Chain has surface rust on it and both tyres are flat. I keep meaning to sell it but I never get round to doing it.

    • @derektaylor6713
      @derektaylor6713 Місяць тому

      Well Liz. The main thing that should concern you is the battery. Hanging around not being used isn't good for it. Find it and press the button on the side to see the state of charge and hope some lights light up. If some do light up just give it a quick 30 minute charge but don't fully charge it. Two lights are enough if you're storing the battery. These batteries are quite expensive. The bike itself can be brought back to life with a little TLC but the electrics on the bike are another thing. The tyres should just pump up and the rusty chain just needs an oil and a good wipe. But also make sure the brakes are ok. They probabley will be. You have a very, very low milage bike that's practically like brand new. Also if the battery does play up or won't work the bike properly check the contacts. They can corode and cause problems. If tarnished, clean with a bit of sand paper and give a squirt of WD40. Good luck.

I wonder how many, including you noticed that? Did you and Helen cycle the same route again in the afternoon that day? Did you need to charge the battery 🔋 again. Gale and I had a cracking ride this weekend by the way, West bay to Chideock via Hell lane and Symondsbury, google it Derek, what a strange place (Hell lane) Lovely views by the way from your motorhome park, I'd of loved to give that steep climb a bash from your camp site on My Haibike! Thanks again for posting Derek, love to you both Daron

      Hi Daron. I thought you might like this one. I've played the film back and yes, you're right. It looks like the same little boat sitting a bit further up the shore. Well spotted. And yes, I did the ride again with Helen right away. I clocked about 27 miles up on that one. Not much charge left from what I remember. And again, I pleasesd to hear you are both getting out on your bikes. Cheers.

    Watching this from South Africa where I've been for the last 42 years. I went to Werneth school from 1957 to 1964 and it still looks the same to me. Your video brought back some happy memories. When you got off your bike across from the school, that used to be the coal pit hills leading over to the red flats.

    • @derektaylor6713
      @derektaylor6713 5 місяців тому

      Hi Peter. Wow. South Africa. They say that Africa is the very place where modern man originally came from and spread around the world. I always feel some deep rooted feeling when I see anything on TV about Africa. Now here's a thing. Born at Woodfield Maternity Home (bottom end of Werneth Park) on the 29th Sept 1951, I went to Werneth when I was 5 in the infants where my mum left me clinging to the railing and crying for her. That would be the infants and juniors about 1956 to 1963 probably the year before you. Teachers I remember were Miss Thornly, Mrs Broadbent, Mr Powel, Mr Taylor (Deputy Head) and Miss Baker (Head Mistress). She reminded me of The Queen Mother lol. It seems to be a modern trend these days in the UK to demolish oldy worldy schools to make way for flashy modern rubbish which after 30 years or so need serious repairs or demolishing themselves. The older photo I took of the school and clock tower clearly shows I was stood on an elevated grassy postion high above the road. That is now all flattened leaving it not possible to take a good comparison shot without stepladders. Happy memories of a very different world. Oh, and by the way, I'd like my Hillman Hunter back and I'll tell you summat else. Getting older is greatly overrated lol. Cheers.

      @@derektaylor6713 Hi Derek. I was born August 1953, just over the hill on Kennedy St. I don't remember Miss Thornly, but I do remember the other four now you mention their names, I also recall a Mr. Simpson who I think was an English teacher on the junior side. Lots of places on this video I didn't recognise now they have changed so much. Reminds me of the Oldham Tinkers song "Is the Owl becoming a Flamingo"

    • @derektaylor6713
      @derektaylor6713 5 місяців тому

      Hi Peter. I tried replying yesterday but either UA-cam or my laptop was playing up. Anyway, I can now type. You must have been just behind me at Werneth School and when I left the juniors, I and nearly all the others moved on to Hollins Secondary Modern seniors on Lyndhurst Rd off Hollins Rd. It's been demolished - of course it has. replaced with some shiney modern tack. But it must always be Werneth School and living on Manchester Street for 13 years that I remember fondly. It was totally different then than it is now. As I've said in other comments for this video, Werneth was practically a small village with everything you'd wish for. But all has gone never to return. Am I the only person on this planet that can just about remember Mrs Watson? She was a little old lady that lived next door when I was very small. A dark and dingy house with one sink and a cold water tap. No electric and a shared toilet at the top of the yard next to an air raid shelter. Gas lights in each room and open coal fire places in each room downstairs and up. Even when I was small she seemed tiny. Always in black with a shawl over her head. Long gone and forgotten I expect. There are pathetic people these days that complain of living in poverty in the UK!!! Well, I'd love to have a look at their living conditions and compare them to Mrs Watson's house. Even illegal immigrants flooding into this country would faint at the prospect of being housed in a house like her's. Cheers.

      Hi Romanmondry. Way back in 2020 my cheap £10 Rolson cyclometer's battery wanted replacing but as with Helen's it didn't work properly after with its new battery! So I pushed the boat out and paid £21 for a better, fancier cylometer. But I'm afraid you must just still get something cheapish for £21 for there was no maker's name or model. In fact the only way I knew it was made in bloody China was because it says so on the instruction leaflet. But there are plenty out there, most with visible names on the front. So it's pot luck. Sorry. As for this one, it's decided to freeze every now and then which is annoying. If it carries on I'll be taking it on its last journey with me to our bin and binning it! Cheers.

    You went straight on at Forest Lodge (north) at the diggers. Further down the hill you turned right (east) and found the house at Lyngarrie. You then returned west back up the hill and turned right continuing north again. Then sharp left (west) and then right (north again) to Dell Lodge and down into Nethy. If you were wanting the B970 back through towards Boat, you should have taken a sharp left at the diggers or branched off left just before the diggers. Both meet together after a few metres to descend west past Cuchanlupe to meet the C road to Loch Garten. (I live a few hundred metres from the Oakwood site and you passed my house…..) 😉 An OS map would show you where you went “wrong”.

And seamlessly going from one subject to another, you would make an amazing historian, and all delivered with a calm and comfy tone, it was an absolute pleasure to watch and listen that film Derek, thanks mate! I did also watch the other two films at the same time, chilly Glenmore, and back in the shed. Now I know this might sound a tad sad, but what a Saturday nights entertainment it was - and I mean it! So so enjoyable and relaxing. I was also glad to see Suzie still going strong in the snow ❄️. Ever so funny watching the dogs crying when Helen went out for water - awe! We switched the screen off and gave it a minute and everything was fine but it happened again the day after. Rather like the Carrera Vulcan and Crossfires which started doing this. The battery contacts look a bit dirty so I'll clean them up before we go away again and see what happens. Cheers.

    • @derektaylor6713
      @derektaylor6713 7 місяців тому

      Yes, it's now five years old and so is the battery. It's still going strong and the Scott's is even slightly older. Although the Cube's electrics have seemed invincible I have to say that whilst away at Sherwood Pines last week for a few days, on day two the Scott's Bosch screen showed ERROR and then the assistance disappeared! We turned the screen off and waited a minute and then it was ok for the rest of the ride. But then it did it again the day after. Power suddenly switched off and was ok again after a restart. But the last ride, it was ok and behaved itself. All I can say is the contacts on the bike where the battery plugs in look a little dull. All I can do with it is clean them up and see what happens. Cheers.

As far as football is concerned I used to follow it years ago but now they get silly money and want for nothing I've lost interest. Some of our world cup winners arrived at Wembley on the bus but not any more. Now a player could buy the whole bus fleet with his pocket money. And as far as Oldham is concerned the place is finished. The council are running it into the ground unless you live in a so-called depraved area mentioning no names. I can't think of anywhere that is regarded as a no-go area. If there is it just shows how pathetic the police are. Getting back to the football. I'm really pleased you like the intro. You haven't asked about the music? Well after watching the gritty detective series - Scott & Bailey (based in Oldham) I thought it might work. The opening music is slightly different than the end credits. Now here's a question. You say it's the second time you've seen this new beginning, well it should be the third. Have you missed the 'Luss Barking Mad Special?' The last 15minutes is dedicated to barky dogs and their stupid owners.
