BMW V8 m60/m62 full engine build timelapse (part two)
this is part two of building new engine (recorded in timelapse) for my e30 v8 drift project :)
in this video you can see second part of build from installing timing components untill finishing bare engine
engine is mix of m62b44 and m60b40 parts
using m62b44nonvanos engine block, crank, rods, pistons and m60b40 heads with valvetrain, timing components(because double row chain and sprocket in the midle, not U guide)
additionally heads are ported and decked to increase CR
did some modifications to intake manifold (also using m60b40 intake with bigger runners) by installing 90mm TB,and removeing ccv system
build new exhaust headers from scratch 4to1
usead all new bearings, piston rings, seals and gaskets
lot of preparing and aditional jobs not recorded
both donor engines were disassembled, all needed parts cleaned
measured cylinders and crank (both in factory spec) ,after instalation all things like; bearing clearance, piston deck height, valve clearence ect.were measured to be sure everything is ok
in total it took more than 300hours

Did you use m60 or m62 head gasket? lol
BMW V8, Beethoven, the 9 symphony, E30, what more? ✨
This is m60 engine😅
You did it again!!!
Dude, you cut off the crescendo!!!
So will the m60 timing set bolt right up to the m62 cams.. my m62b44 jumped time yesterday, and i have a m60 in my s10 that im thinking about robbing the duplex chain system out of.. i would swap the heads as well but i dont have nowhere to retune the car.
Not sure, these are m60heads with m60 cams and cams from 4.4 don't fit 4.0 head, can you just change sprockets I don't know
@unknownswaps ok. Thanks for the info.. when I get the m60 tore apart. I'll post back. I've been looking for some days and can't find any info on it.. I do know the timing chain cover has to be used when swapping to m60 heads and timing set.
Hey im doing an m60 swap with the 420G trans, any clues to what clutch and flywheel i use?
What flywheel do you want you can go with singlemass aftermarket or oem dualmass, and clutch set depands of that and size of input shaft I think there was difference from e34 and e39 gearbox
@@unknownswaps my 420g came from a e39 i was told but how do i check? I'd like to go with the dual mass
@@vicentechamberlain579 see diameter and number of teeth of the input shat, part number on gearbox and you should know, if you go with oem dualmass flywheel you need oem clutch set and you can find part numbers for that on realoem site
@@unknownswaps sweet thanks!
Dream’s garage
Which 90mm TB did you use?
It was epman universal 90mm tb, but did a lot of mods on it to fit with oem tps and custom backplate for intake manifold You can see more of it in this vid ua-cam.com/video/VpkBXI7C99c/v-deo.html
Awesome job! Thanks for the vid. Where did you get the rod bolts from? I'm looking for a new set but all I can find is quite expensive for 16 bolts...
Tnx, for the rod bolts as I know only options are oem from bmw service or arp, both expensive as you said 😕
Can I buy this?
Not sure that I would sell this🙂
Monstrum.
Did you hone the block using sunnen An-30? Were piston rings reused and have you have any issue with oil burning or ring seal?
I didn't hone the block, just cleaned it, no wear marks were on it and it was measured, all cyl in great shape Used new goetze rings, for now all looks ok, no blowby After dyno will try to make compression test and endoscope to see inside just to be sure all is ok
@@unknownswaps I'm currently playing with several m62tu blocks. I tried just re ringing on original bores once in 2016 but had immediate large volumes of oil smoke. This past summer I hand buffed An-30 compound on bore with the block in chassis with piston at BDC and had a real improvement on leakdown #'s and reduced oil burning. Next I'll try a true felt honing on the cyl wall and reusing the original rings. The theory being that the cyl wall is the wear surface and not the harder chrome faced rings in this case.
@@JesseBreakshow many m62 blocks you got? I have two m60s and I need an m62 block for my build. I can’t find one and there’s very little info on these builds out there
@@thatoneBMWguy I have about 3 spare blocks on hand, however I'm in Alberta Canada so unsure how affordable it would be to ship 300+ lb very far. I'll release some more information on rebuilding these on my channel, but finding it hard to remember to film while doing the work.
Any updates @JesseBreaks
thoroughly enjoyed watching you build that engine to perfection. Awesome to see it being used the way it should :)
M62 in prefect form
Finally on the road great job let's goo ❤️👏🏻
Prejebeno slozena kockulja, lajkam stil, samo naprijed!
I own one engine like that, tested it from Johannesburg to Cape Town and back. Three thousand km + no issues! What a design 👏 👌. Thank you for sharing your skills...like you knew that music in the background decorated my trip. Keep that content coming...only normal video speed please, just so I could copy and retrace your steps in fixing mine 🙏. Well done! Subscribed 🤝.
Thank you 🙂 Video is recorded in timelapse mode because there is more than 300 hours of work and footage also and I wonted to show everything from assembly (measuring and cleaning parts were cut out) so that was only way 🙂 Most important steps are written in video, for more questions feel free to ask 😉
I wish the M62 engines kept the timing sprocket instead of the stupid U guide. My E38 has yet to need it replaced, but how many M62/M62TU E39’s and E38’s have been junked because of that one fatal design flaw that had some people losing their car before 100k miles?
Jep m60 solution is much better because of sprocket and double row chain that U guide no question... But lot of m62 got hurt because of lack of regular services with good oil, then tensioner starts to fail and in the end U guide
Lack of regular oil changes is the primary cause for failing guides on the m62. I've just been through a totally disintegrated U-shape guide with my m62TU engine, at only 82k miles. It turned out, that previous owners kept long oil change intervals (approx 12k miles or every 2-3 years), resulting in a totally gummed up chain tensioner/failed to tension the chain properly. I change the oil once a year and every 5k miles, with quality oil, since it's so crucial in these engines. Watch this: ua-cam.com/video/ktEctXhtufs/v-deo.html
@@ThePerfectionOfLexus lack of quality and consistent oil changes doesn’t cause the chain slack and start smacking the U guide. That’s a collapsed spring inside a guide tensioner. But collectively poor oil changes and collapsed guide tensioner leads to the ultimate failure. Driving once advanced timing codes are being thrown and chain slap is happening doesn’t help.
@@paperandmedals8316 Did you watch Timm's video I linked to? There is no spring, besides the one in the chain tensioner, and it does very little, since the tensioner is hydraulic. But poor oil changes will cause the tensioner to seize/gum up, and malfunction, which means, no tension on the chain.
@@ThePerfectionOfLexus 🙄1. I’ve watched Timm’s video years prior 2. Yes guide tensioners oil ports provides force on the guide, but the spring is the critical force as anyone who has replaced one can tell you. The spring literally collapses on the guide side. If you have not replaced your guide tensioner you’ll discover their importance soon enough.
This has being the best videos about the m60b44 builds love the music on the background too make me concentrate better watching the video 👌🏼
Will m62tu change this build
I had good m62 engine block so I did this to get extra 400ccm. Some people did it with m62tu engine

Thank you
Super video
Tnx
So wait !!!! You put M60 head's on M62 ....and how you put the double chain !!?? M60 krankshaft ???? On M62 ...it fitts ?? 😬😬
Yes everything with heads and whole timing assembly is from m60b40 engine block, crank pistons and rods are m62b44(bigger stroke and bore) one of modifications to make this combo is installing chain sprocket from m60 on m62 crank because double row chain You can see that in the video on 4:05 🙂
@@unknownswaps Pfff TANK YOU !!! 😁😁😁😁
@@unknownswaps nothing custom you need to make it fit m62 what about m62 tu??
@@Mena6e.c7 as I know m62 and m62tu engine blocks are the same, only m62tu has slots in pistons for valves, and m62 has flat pistons
Amazing build, you know how many hp?
Tnx, didn't went to dyno jet, I am hoping more than 300(stock is 286hp),but more important for me is torque curve and throttle response
Nice
