Middle-aged Swede goes for a walk
Sweden
Приєднався 1 чер 2022
Walking videos from all over Sweden, mostly tours of urban areas but also old ruins, nature trails and the occasional shopping mall/shopping center tour.
In recent videos I've been adding commentary in the CC / Subtitles so if you want to read a bit about the history and/or other things related to the places I walk at, try enabling that.
Mostly you will find the complete, uncut & unedited walks here but if I spot anything interesting during the walk I might highlight that in a short. As always there'll be some exceptions to the rule though, so expect some other things as well.

How it rhst the sun is shinning in Sweden at the moment ? 🤔
It's not, if you check the description of the video, you'll see that it was recorded in september 😀I recorded quite a few videos during road trips in the autumn so I still haven't posted all of them from that time.

По-русски "столица" - это "престол" правителя, место сидения (нахождениях) царя, короля, князя. Поэтом Нючёпинг вполне можно назвать😅 старой столицей шведских монархов!
Thanks for the Christmas decoration Tour of central Gothenburg! Quite impressive how much decorations that are put up, the trees lining Kungsportsavenyn had been wired with lights, a lof of the restaurants with Chrismas tree outside, the hotel really nicely decorated (with Clarion Post Hotel maybe taking the price for most effort). The main problem here is that there was no snow! Christmas decorations with lights etc gets 10 times better with snow around since it reflects etc. I noticed the same in south of Sweden where I live, we had no snow for December but the other day we had a few days with cold weather and snow and immediately I noticed more of the Christmas decorations and how nice they were. I think we should move Christmas two weeks or something, the likelihood of snow would increase. :)
Thanks! I agree, Christmas decorations looks a lot nicer with some snow around and it certainly does feel like winter has shifted a bit, with snow being more common in January & February than in December. Not to mention how far into the spring we can get snow. Still remember walking "LinnéMarschen" a few years ago (or probably more than a few, was around 2010 I think) in the beginning of May and having heavy snow during the walk.
I have heard about "Gamla Linköping" and seen some pictures of it, but it wasn't until I saw your video that I realized the scale of it! Very impressive! What a great idea by Lennart Sjöberg and how well it has been implemented, moving all the buildings there etc. I haven't been to Skansen (outdoor museum in Stockholm) in a long while but what I find impressive with Gamla Linköping is that you don't have like the odd historical building standing here and there, here you actually have complete city blocks with historical buildings. It gives a totally different atmosphere and ambiance, almost like travelling back in time! The fact that they have kept Gamla Linköping a "living area" makes sense as well, it is always good to have people living in an area and also it reinforces the long term viability of the place. I like the fact that they have kept an old phone booth in there, in not too distant future very few people will have seen actual real ones. :)
Thanks for watching! I haven't visited Skansen (at least as far as I can remember, might've been there during one of our many road trips when I was a kid 40+ years ago) so I can't really compare them, but yeah, I liked what they've done with Gamla Linköping, it does feels like you're visiting a town from the past.
Ohh man!! How beautiful!! Thanks for showing the beauty. I love the buuldings. I wish this video got millions of views. Nice job! Do you live there??
Thank you! This was recorded while we stopped there during a road trip, I don't live there.

Founded in 1643, I had no idea Åmål was that old, impressive! Looks to me that the city have managed to retain quite a good number of historic buildnings, eventhough as you mention in the video, some big fires have happened which has of course had its impact on the buildings. I have definitely heard about the movie "F***ing Åmål" back in the day, it had a huge impact, eventhough to be honest, I don't think I ever saw the full movie. I think it portrayed Åmål as a small and boring place, but it was from the eyes of teenagers and I guess regardless of place where you grow up there is always something bigger that looks alluring somewhere else. :) The outline of the city looks nice with great scenary out over Värnern. I like the square at 23:45, at least on that end of the square the buildings surrounding the square look nice with some good years to them. The church in the end looks beautifull, imagine it being over 200 years old and so well maintained, great. Thanks for the tour!
Thanks for watching! I was also surprised by the age of Åmål, as well as how nice of a town it was. I really did not know much about the town, and my impression of it was really mostly formed by the movie (which I haven't even seen anything from, other than the ads for it that was constantly running on the TV back then).
This was certainly a quick view of the Håverud aqueduct but nonetheless interesting and what great scenery! Impressive engineering in the 1860's. This Nils Ericson who if I am correct was the older brother of John Ericsson, both of them great engineers for sure. One thing that confuses me though is that Nils seemed to spell his surname with one s while John with two? Anyway, impressive that two brothers were so prominent in engineering and construction. That shot at 4:55 is great, with the mirroring of the sky and the buildings in the water. Thanks for adding date of filming as well!
Thanks for watching! I had to look it up now that you mentioned it and it seems Nils Ericson removed one 's' from his last name when he was "adlad" ( ennobled ) in 1854.
Song name?

The market was not that great, as you said, but it´s always nice to stroll around in central Gothenburg. I enjoyed it.

Thank you so much for this video! Wow, this takes me back. I had a black cocker spaniel, Milton was his name... We crossed this bridge every day together from 2000-2013. Up ahead we would always turn right and circle around the citadel. Landskrona is such a magical town. When I left in 2014 the bridge at 10:14 did not yet exist. The "Peninsula" at 12:14 always had drunk kids partying every friday/saturday during spring & summer. In 2007 the municipality put ALPACAS of all animals within the enclosures, but someone let loose a pitbull that mauled one of the animals and thus they were removed. Also, you can pay for a fishing permit for the water surrouding the citadel. If you walk outside the citadell early in the morning there are hundreds of rabbits runnning around. Gorgeous pheasants and along the beaches big stone blocks meant to keep out possble nazi invasion. People in Landskrona speak with a super "thick" accent in comparison to "normal" Swedish. On a sad note, in february of 2007 an elderly gentleman by the name of Sune Karlsson (76) was reported missing along with his vehicle, a ford fiesta. He was not found until 2015, when a a passeserby spotted, Sunes car in the outer rim waters of Landskrona citadel. It is a mystery how his car was not spotted submurged during all those years.
I have a photo of my dog trying to pick a fight with the alpacas, should it be of any "historical" interest. 😁 ... Min vän din kanal är perfekt!
Thank you! As someone who only stopped by while on a road trip, there's a limit to how much I can learn about the place, hearing more about it from someone who has lived there for many years is great!
@@MiddleAgedSwedeGoesForAWalk Exactly! And even after living there for so many years I still feel this small crime-ridden, stinky (yes, Landskrona smells of sulphur) and generally dead small town still tries to draw me back in. Uppsala; Gottsunda as well... Gottsunda, only a native would want to revisit this place I think. lol..
Cute small town
Thanks for the tour of Säffle! I hardly knew anything about Säffle before this video so this was really educational! I liked the fact that the city seemed to have a lot of information screens set-up which showed pictures how areas used to look before etc. That is great. Looking at that screen displayed at 2:46 unfortunately it seems that the square was surrounded by a lot more beautiful buildings back in the day compared to how it looks now... Generally I thought Säffle looked really nice with the channel, the river and quite a lot of impressive buildings for such a relatively small city. Remarkable really that Ivar Tengbom designed a water tower (21:44) there in 1914, considering he was one of the bigger architects already i Stockholm. I think he did the main office for Stockholms Enskilda bank in 1915 and then of course Stockholsm Konserthus and also Tändstickspalatset, he was the guy back in the day.But someone in Säffle must have said like 1912, "we need a new water tower and we want Ivar Tengbom to design it" :). Imagine the emphasis they put on design back in the day, even for a water tower! We have lost something in that area to be honest. On another note, did you ever consider to put somewhere in the text of your videos which day it was filmed? I was just thinking that sometimes a film is recorded and then it is released several months later and info on when it was filmed could be of interest for someone later on when they watch. To know if something was filmed in August or in October just to put the move in context. Anyway, just a thought! Thanks!
Thanks for watching! Yeah, I think it's great when there's a lot of signs like that, great reading and also makes it so much easier for me when I'm writing these texts :) It seems Tengbom designed quite a few water towers, I found one list of them saying he designed all these: Askersund (1907), Katrineholm (1907), Hässleholm (1910), Trelleborg (1911), Säffle (1911), Solna (1912), Sundbyberg (1912) I guess the year was when he made the design, since the one for Säffle is listed a few years before the tower was built. Good idea about the date, UA-cam has a bunch of fields to enter when uploading the video and one of them, that I usually fill in, is the date, but I'm not sure that information is visible anywhere for the viewers, I think UA-cam just stores it for their own use. I should probably make it visible somewhere and at least add it to the description of the videos. This one was recorded on 2024-08-12.
@@MiddleAgedSwedeGoesForAWalk Interesting that Tengbom was involved in that many water towers!
Hello from Finland! 🇫🇮 I absolutely loved this video; the views are stunning! 😍 I’ve just subscribed and hit the like button. 👍✨ Keep up the amazing work!

Thank you for this. I recognised a few places, but I was especially happy to see my mother's old family home at Borgmastaregatan 25. I lived there as a toddler from 1947-49,and visited several times since. She was a Kanje.
Very interesting part of Mölndal Gothenburg I didn’t know about! Are you from Gothenburg yourself??
Thanks for watching! I'm not from Gothenburg, but I do visit it now and then since it's only about an hour away by car.
@ I haven’t been back to Sweden for over 30 years, I grew up in Gothenburg and Partille. Would be very interesting for me if you could make a video about Kåhög, Jonsered , Aspen and Lexby in Partille. 😊
I was born in Mölndal. Haven’t been in Sweden since 1991.
Thats a long time, alot has changed thats for sure. But you could say the same about every country aswell in that time period.
Cheers for this! Brings back memories for me, I grew up in Partille!

I laughed when i read the description. 😅
Thanks for the tour of Borgvik and surroundings! Great that they have kept kind of the outline of the foundry so one can envision how it looked back in its glory. Seemed to me that also a lot of info was available for the visitor to understand both how buildings loooked and how the foundry worked. I think that Borgvik with all the buildings around seems to have found a good mix where some of the buildings are used for other purposes like hotel, art gallery etc and some of them are owned by private individuals. That way I think the likelihood that buildings will stay in ok shape over time is increased. Another thing, looking at these videos now when it grey, dark and gloomy in December, makes one really appreciate summertime!
Thanks for watching! I agree that such a mix is probably good to keep places like this preserved, and of course also and active and dedicated "hembygdsförening", I've really gained an appreciation for all the work all the "Hembygdsföreningar" around Sweden put into preserving our history since I started doing all these road trips and recording these videos. As far as summertime videos goes, I recorded so many videos during my road trips this summer that if I keep going at the current pace with one video each week, I can probably last through most of this winter with videos recorded during the summer & fall :)
We see a perfect nature, thank you very much,
Thank you!
As an Architect I appreciate this all immensely! This is lovely - seems to me a much slower pace in the videos you post compared to Canada where I am from, and I am sure that the Architecture and the daily exposure to rich history has a big impact on that. Thanks for the videos!
Thank you very much!

That Karlstad has a cathedral was not really clear for me to be honest. I like the cathedral though, especially its really light and white both exterior and interior. Also relatively small for a cathedral, which always make it a bit more cosy rather than the majestic or grand feeling that you can get from the bigger cathedrals. Thanks!
Thanks for watching! Yeah, while visiting it, I did think it was a bit less "grand" than many other cahedrals (or "domkyrkor") I've visited, in many ways it felt more like a slightly larger "normal" church. Though I guess since the title comes from the role of the church rather than the "grandness" of it, the cathedrals of Sweden did come in all shapes and sizes.
Thanks for the tour of Karlstad! I have never been to Karlstad or Värmland myself but for me it has always seemed very beutiful and scenic. I have seen overview drone footage of Karlstad with Klarälven flowing through the city, looks great! At least part of the city seems to have the renaissance pattern of very linear streets in 90 degree angle that one can see in quite a few swedish cities. Such beutiful weather as well in your video. I always associate Karlstad with sun and happy people, probably a lot influenced from my childhood with Bengt Alsterlind and his summer-Hajk where he always empasized how sunny it is in Karlstad and how happy people are. :)
Thanks for watching! I have to admit that even though I watched a lot of Hajk while growing up, I did not know where it was recorded, so I never really associated it with Karlstad until you mentioned it :)
Thanks for the tour of Kristinehamn! Impressive with a street that contains both the white house and a sugarcastle. :) Don't know much about Kristinehamn but as I understand it has historically been an important port in Vänern. So goods probably arrived via railway from Bergslagen and other areas (railway Mora-Vänern for example) and then shipped with boats on Vänern via Trollhättan channel down to Gothenburg. Probably today that trade is less important. City looks like a mix of old and more modern buidings, I don't know, both the North Square and South Square look a bit big and deserted, but maybe summertime mid-day there are more people there. Generally there are not a lot of people outside it seems, when you walk in city centre at 20:30 it is so empty of people that I wonder if Kristinehamn still is under pandemic. :). I like the place where Frälsningsarmen are situated, it is like a fortress! And the church in the end is beautiful, impressive construction with those large windows. Also really enjoyed that Kvarteret Vågen, such nice old fashioned buildings. Great that it has been kept like that.
Thanks for watching! The city does seem a bit empty, both on the squares and the "shopping street", then again I often find cities rather empty when I visit them so I didn't really think to much about it, maybe people just randomly chose to evacuate the cities before I arrive to film? :) And yeah, I really enjoyed a lot of nice old buildings, especially in Kvarteret Vågen. After I started my youtube channel and started going on road-trips I've noticed that a lot of towns have places like that, entire blocks with old buildings, something I previously hadn't really realized how common it was. It's really nice to see at least parts of history getting preserved like that.
Thank you!
Thank you!
Very sweet deserve to touuuuuur ❤
Nice walk, thank´s!

Thanks for the short tour of Wadköping, what a treasure it is! And we should all send our gratitudes to Bertil Waldén who came up with the idea to preserve all these buidings for the afterworld. Read that this was constructed in the mid-60s, this was the time when politicians and builders in Sweden went totally crazy and all in on modern square boring functionalistic buildinings a la Le Corbusier. I can just imagine the kind of stick that Bertil Waldén got for suggesting to preserve these buildings, he was probably called all kind of negative things etc but he prevailed and now we have this Wadköping to enjoy. A funny thing about Wadköping, when I was younger I was not aware of that there actually was something real called Wadköping. So then when I heard of "Markurells i Wadköping", the book/play by Hjalmar Bergman, I actually thought it was something entire fictional and I confused it with Grönköping. But then with this construction actually named after the book/play by Bergman, it actually went from fictional to something real. It is all clear now. :)
Thanks! He really did do a great job making sure these buildings were preserved! When it comes to the name, it does make one wonder how common it is that fictional places gets to name real places (not counting hotels and restaurants or similar that might often take the name of a fictional place).
Thanks for the tour and all the information provided! I have never been myself to Örebro, but always been very impressed by the castle, Örebro Slott. It just looks so solid and impressive, almost impenetrable! One can see from all the historical buildings that Örebro has played a important part in Sweden over the years. As always, when you have some water running through the city, it makes for great scenary. The view at 17:09 is great with the water and those nice buildings in the background! Regarding all the Open Art, well, in my taste maybe Örebro has gone a bit over the top with it, but on the other hand I don't live in Örebro so I don't really have a say! :)
Thanks for watching! Yeah, Örebro was a really nice city and the castle really is impressive looking! I agree with you on the Open Art, I'm not really one educated in the understanding of art but for me, I mostly prefer art that blends in rather than art that stands out. Though with that said, if I had to pick a favorite it'd probably be the RubberDuck, even though it wasn't from this years OpenArt and it does stand out a bit :)
Thank you!
