Many patients wonder how often do they need to see their surgeon after surgery for follow-up. Each surgeon may have a different time schedule but routine follow-up is important. Prior to the onset of pain x-rays may show the plastic insert is wearing down or see signs of osteolysis. Catching early signs can prevent loosening. If caught early revision surgery may only include putting in a new plastic insert. Late, if there is loosening the whole implant may need to be revised or re-done.

I was advised to have posteria hip replacement because anteria procedure takes TOO LONG>
After MUA how long on average does a person need opioids. My doc isn't calling me back and I need direction on this. UBER is not reliable and I live alone.
Very interesting info! Do the same comments hold true for total hip arthroplasty? I need bilateral hips done, and one orthopod proposes to use augmented reality.
Yes, similar data on the hip. Augmented reality is cool and I have used it. Best advice usually is just find a high volume surgeon that is doing a lot of hip and knee replacements each year. The technology at this point for most surgeries is bonus but not mandatory. Things may change in the future.
I had left knee done 2023 July I'm still healing . Never again will I get it done not doing right knee
❤
Thank you, very helpful
You're welcome!
16 months out left knee. Still pain and stiffness. I've had 2 MUAs at 12 weeks and 1 year out. I did PT religiously, my body just didn't like the whole deal.
Sorry to hear.
New Jersey…left TKR 1 year-right TKR 9 months…so far, so good!
Sounds good, thanks for sharing.
I had both knees replaced w/o a problem. My question: my doctor (now retired) counseled not to run or jog. My exercise now consists of an hour brisk walk 5 times a week. Your opinion?
I tell my patient not to run. Running puts 7x body weight on each leg each step while walking is around 1.5x body weight. I tell them if a bear is chasing them run, they could run to catch a flight if they are late. But running for exercise on a regular basis could prematurely wear out the knee and could cause pain. Walking is great exercise and knee replacements will hold up to regular walks just fine.
Did your doctor show you your x-rays? Was this helpful?
Did you need to have a revision? What was the reason? How did it go?
Hope this helps. What advice would you have for others if they are about to have knee replacement?
restore trial is faulty due to using only low dose PRP.
Some data on PRP, but yes, good controlled studies are needed going forward to determine the best doses and concentrations.
I just got my knee replaced 6 weeks ago. Toronto Canada
Thanks for sharing. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
I had left knee replacement 3 years ago. I am watching from north Texas.
Thanks for watching, hope the knee is still doing well.
My left knee replacement is 2 years,my right knee replacement is in 2 weeks.Watching from Utah.
Good luck with your upcoming surgery, wishing you a speedy recovery.
@@dradamrosenThank you!!@
My right knee was replaced a little more than 4 years ago. I’m in Northern California. I am scheduled to have my left knee replaced in March.
I hope you have an uneventful recovery with your left total knee.

Great to hear. I hope you didn't have to wait too long. I hear wait times in Canada have been bad.
@ it varies by area. I got mine done relatively quickly. Nice to be pain free. I listened to all your podcasts while cycling on my new knees. Keep up the good work.
Pennsylvania, LTKR 6/12/24... Thanks always for the information 👍.
You are very welcome. PA, my home state.
Do you have a sensitivity or allergic reaction to metal and jewelry? Did you have any special testing done before surgery? Was a special implant used?
Did you use a CPM after surgery or not? If you used one do you think it was helpful or harmful?
Be sure to do the test and feel free to share your results.
Do you have some of these risk factors? What did you do to optimize yourself before surgery?
Do you take antibiotics when you go to the dentist? What does your surgeon and dentist recommend?
How much did you think the surgery cost? Was this information helpful?
Does your total knee still hurt? What has been done to help?

Did you have tourniquet pain and bruising? Were you aware there was an option to do the surgery without a tourniquet?
I am incredibly humbled by all of the nice and encouraging comments. So thank you. I am also glad to hear from those of you who mentioned how this video helped them. Lets keep the conversation about mental illness going.
South Florida. 1 year on the 17th of this month. I'm totally satisfied. 66 years old. Appt on 1/20. No pain and very little nerve issue around the cap area. Thanks for your channel.
Great to hear! Thanks for sharing.
I am in Maine and my two year checkup is scheduled for 7 weeks from now. I will be asking for an X-ray because I still have significant discomfort. It seems to be muscle/nerve related, but I think an X-ray is called for too.
Sounds like a good idea. Hopefully everything is okay.
Thanks for watching. Let us know how old your total knee replacement is and where you are watching from.
@dradamrosen Your videos helped educate me and get me successfully and confidently through my first TKR in April 2024, and also understanding the after effects of the multiple post surgery drugs I was given and reacted to. I'm happy to have had it done though. The other knee will have to be replaced at some point in the coming years but I'm no longer afraid of the procedure. And with the new knee no longer in pain, 9 months later its enabled me to get up/down out of a chair and climb stairs without grimacing and holding on, and that's amazing after so many years of agonizing chronic pain! I also now realize that I have more energy and can do things again! Walk, do squats, (yuk), climb ancient ruins, and travel! I'm watching your videos from Toronto Canada and I hope your 2025 is off to a very positive start too! U deserve it! Will always be grateful for your informative and easy to understand videos! Thanks again!
I am 3 months with a tkr and still in a lot of pain, back of knee buckles, kneecap tight and still on walker .going to see my doctor tomorrow to check this doesn't feel right.what test should he take to test everything not just bones
I am at 5 months tkr, since 7 weeks I have no pain +120 range of motion, couldn’t be happier, found you book helpful, from Ontario, Canada.
@nadiarovinetti8815 keep the faith! Three months IS still early, and as long as you continue to do the exercises recommended EACH AND EVERY DAY AND ice and elevate afterward, (u cant miss a day!),it will get looser, less "zingers" of pain, and swelling will start to go down. I found at 3 months, I could finally sleep thru the night and at 6, an amazing difference. At 9, most days are normal with just the odd twinge or ache, if I sit too long and don't walk. Keep going and please don't give up! I've met others with long term challenges and most admit they didn't do the exercises, or at least keep moving daily and that can mean major problems. It's not a quick recovery like hips but U can do it! Wishing you all the best soon!
@@dradamrosen I am watching from California. I had left knee replaced in 2019 and the right knee replaced in 2022. As I am 80 years old I suppose my plastic knees will be good for whatever my lifespan turns out to be. The knees work great for most things now and I do a brisk walk 3 miles a day.
Your video is very helpful! And just as helpful are all the comments on this page! I looked for a support group and didn't find one - but this is good! I'm at 6 weeks post knee surgery. Sleeping at first was brutal, the pain brutal. It's much better now. I use a cane because if I go without it my hip and knee hurt much more. Thanks for mentioning the ongoing heat in the knee. That's reassuring! My knee is always warm, And reddish. I find various post op exercise on the net very helpful! I'll check out yours.
Glad that you liked it.
Very valuable info. Thx so much Dr Adam.
You are very welcome.
Hi Doctor Adam. thank you so much. From Malaysia.
Thanks for watching! And hello from San Diego.
Excellent, thank you Dr. Rosen.
Thank you for the most through and informative info I have seen.
You are so welcome!
Do most people who have TKR have to have MUA? I Am 6 weeks post op and stil have very stiff knee. I can move it just not fully. I do PT 3 times a week pLus at home exercise
The need for an MUA is around 3% of patients.
Good data, thanks Doc!
Any time!
Menopause means less estrogen, which can allow tendon tears. What to do?
Thank you so much for this information.
Glad it was helpful!
75 year old granny here in Toronto who is just out of three week total knee replacement. Was blessed with a rockstar surgeon who used a ‘Rosa Robot-assisted ‘ procedure. Was told that a large amount of cement was required to fill the bones eaten away before the cobalt and titanium caps were embedded. Hardly experienced any pain. (2/10 range.) Was sent home within 4 hours with a three-day pain blocker swinging from a string on my neck to a pic line on my thigh. SO lucky and grateful to have this procedure.
Glad to hear and thanks for sharing.
Excellent information, thank you for sharing ❤
You are so welcome
I reached 130 ROM by 2nd week but I am in my 7th week and some days I can't walk due to swelling and tightness. 😢
Thank you for sharing! It's very admirable that you are speaking out. My feelings of inadequacy and fear of judgment won't allow me to do the same.
I'm reluctant to get injections or surgery even though my mobility has been severely decreased. I am trying option number one....lose weight. Progressive knee pain due to a strain, healing, then overweight and a fall on the pavement...right on my knees while running. I cannot give up, but am not a fan of slice and dice....just yet...I pray I won't need to go that route. Even the injections...compromise the cartilage, right?
