Re the comments here on keep or release, I don't see any moral difference between taking a fish from the river and buying a trawler caught one. Of course anglers should limit themselves. From what I hear, many more are taken by nets from rivers at night but that's not discussed much.

Are you serious? He is not over gun in any way! I did fish a lot in just river Spey and we use 15-15,6' 10/11# and that's not over kill in spring we cast big copper tube of 1,5-3" try that whit a 12' and 7/8# line good luck. And as you use longbelly lines of 50-80' head then a long rod is helping you make casting easy.

Well done mate! Nicely fished, hooked landed and kept. Isn't it wonderful how many more fish returned to our Irish rivers in 2020 when the boats were off. Lets everyone see it's not the fisherman who is doing the damage but the trawlermen, I wonder how they get so many and are able to get them ashore and sold with no questions asked?? Yet we have to listen all the shite about returning returning every fish we get!! You have tags with your license for a reason. Take some fish, you have paid enough for them. Tight lines buddy.

Suppose it depends partly on personal choice and how well you can cast. I use to mainly use a 13’ double hander with maybe an 8 or 9 # line and maybe a 10’ single handed trout rod with a 7# line for low water and sea trout. Now mostly use a 11’6” switch rod with a 7# scandi line with a short head. You can fish it double or single handed. It covers most situations although I wouldn’t want to hook a big fresh fish in heavy water on this rod! No need for a big rod as the Roe is not a wide river.
