      also why is there artificial gravity and why dont the returning kerbals deorbit themselves okay i get it that this is for realism but using the fairing and engine plate glitch doesnt sound real to me anyways what shielding did the "photobrakers" use?

    • @lotsoflambdas
      @lotsoflambdas 2 місяці тому

      like,i always assumed that air causes drag and heat so they appear at the same time always hmm would it work if there was a fairing and engine plate glitch that contained a inflatable heat shield that shielded something outside the fairing?

    • @lt_duckweed
      @lt_duckweed 2 місяці тому

      The Kerbals aren't sent with the station as a sort of roleplay. Basically confirming the station is safe before Kerbals are sent. Artificial gravity is also a realism/roleplay/rule of cool thing. I just thought it would be neat to have :) The returning Kerbals don't deorbit themselves because the margins on that craft were quite tight. It needed to have about 28,000m/s of delta-v for a safe return, and the mass of enough parachutes to safely land would have had a severe negative impact on margins.

    • @lt_duckweed
      @lt_duckweed 2 місяці тому

      As for the shielding, it basically works like this: DLC structural plates have nodes on all 6 sides, so if you node attach appropriately sized parts on at least one node in every direction, they no longer have an drag cube surface area to absorb heat with. However, they still cast "shock shadows" behind them that protect from shock heating. Some folks call these "magic shields" The drag is generated by flags that are stored in a service bay, and have a magic shield in front of them. On the station, these are the little knobs by the NERV engines. On the transfer craft, this is the visible plate by the ion engines, and a service bay hidden in the front of the craft. All the rest of the parts on each craft are "inside" the root part fairing or "inside" a chain of nested fairings that ultimately trace back to the root part fairing. "Inside" in this case means that the center of the part in inside the fairings skin (as long as the center is inside, the rest of the part can stick out). Root fairings don't count their own panels for drag or heating, so the base of the root fairing can be shielded by a magic shield. On the station, this is the series of plates visible on the front of the station. On the transfer craft, this is also the plate by the ion engines. This setup is overall more difficult to set up than the fairing+engine plate setup, but the craft were designed before the fairing+engine plate exploit was discovered.

      @@lt_duckweed what are you sure that a kerbal parachute actually negatively impacts the Delta v enough for you so that the craft no longer gets to the orbit of kerbin like like you just need an ion shuttle that has a lot of Dv travel between kerbal and kerbin and kerbals can deorbit theirselves and survive a water landing without parachutes or a landing with parachutes

    Two things about 8:15 Barrel roll is the wrong term. The maneuver you performed there is an Aileron roll. Second of all, how does an aileron roll affect vertical velocity? And what part of the vertical velocity needs to be _managed?_

    • @lt_duckweed
      @lt_duckweed 8 місяців тому

      Because the plane is flying hold prograde with wing incidence, lift is always directed upwards from a plane centric frame of reference. By rolling the craft I redirect the lift vector away from surface centric vertical. The reason I do this is to allow gravity to reduce vertical speed, and while the craft is inverted, to have the lift vector contribute to this, reducing vertical speed even faster. The reason I want to manage vertical speed is that if I don't, the craft will pick up a large phugiod en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phugoid For a given designed wing loading for a plane with wing incidence, for any altitude there will be a single airspeed that causes lift to balance gravity. Going faster than this will cause you to begin to gain vertical velocity and the craft, following prograde, starts to nose up. You will continue to gain vertical speed until you climb to you ideal altitude for your current speed, but all the built up vertical velocity causes you to shoot right past you ideal altitude into thinner air that doesn't provide enough lift, eventually causing your vertical speed to drop negative and cause you to lose altitude, with the eventual result of dropping right past your ideal altitude again, leading to a cycle of bobbing up and down. So the overall goal is to moderate and manage the rate of climb so that you stay as close to your ideal altitude as possible, as both you and it slowly climb as you gain airspeed.

    • @lt_duckweed
      @lt_duckweed 8 місяців тому

      Putting this all together, a typical efficient ssto will have an ideal altitude of about 0 at around Mach 1, meaning that until you reach Mach one you have to nose up above prograde to get enough lift toaintain level flight, even at sea level. As you pass Mach 1, you can transition to prograde hold and your ideal altitude starts rising. However, this is about the time that the rapier really kicks it into high gear, so your airspeed and thus ideal altitude start rising fast, but your vertical velocity, and thus actual altitude, takes time to build up, so idea altitude runs away from you and the plane will continuously gain vertical speed, usually reaching a peak climb angle of 20-30 degrees. Actual altitude won't catch up to ideal altitude untill you are around 10-12km, at which point you have built up several hundred m/s of vertical velocity, and you overshoot by something like 5-6km, entering a massive phugiod cycle. A single well timed roll during the initial high angle climb will clip off most of this excess vertical velocity right before you finally catch up to you ideal altitude, so that you reach it with a much more sedate rate of climb that more closely matches the rate of climb of the ideal altitude.

    • @Tr0lliPop
      @Tr0lliPop 8 місяців тому
