    Can I ask? I have a golden coin. I tried it the black stuff was there. Then I tried it on my quarter (20 European cents) and the black stuff also appears to be there. What does that mean?

    Most fake gold is formed using non-magnetic metals! So please don't use this as a stand alone test. Usually 2 more methods more reliable than the magnet are used in addition to a simple magnet test. XRF or conductivity tests are great, but expensive is equipment needed (or a jeweler can do it for you) . Acid scratch test is one of the cheapest methods, but it marks the material.
