Holding On To Hope and Mystery After Loss with Kay Warren
WARNING: This episode contains conversations about suicide and may not be suitable for all listeners/viewers.
What do you do when your worst nightmare comes true after a painful battle with a loved one's mental illness? How do you hold the tension between hope and the mysteries of God in your life after loss?
For author, speaker, advocate and pastor's wife Kay Warren, learning to hold onto hope after losing her son Matthew while accepting the mysteries of all she did not understand was difficult. Kay and her husband, author and Pastor Rick Warren, had walked a long, difficult journey through Matthew's lifelong struggle with mental health and faced every parent's worst fear coming true when their adult son died by suicide. Kay experienced the depths of grief and sorrow as she wrestled with God to make sense of such a tragedy. But her pain has given her the opportunity to become an advocate for mental health in the church and a voice of hope for parents who are facing a similar journey.
In this honest conversation, Davey and Kay talk about how reality, grief, and hope must all co-exist together, why we need both hope and mystery as we look back on our pain, and how to deal with the shame and guilt after losing a loved one to suicide.
If you've found it hard to hold on to hope in the darkness of your suffering, this episode will light a pathway towards it.

Lily looks like Celine D.❤
I read the book in few days in vacation its such a great book, I cried few times. I really saw God into this! What a legacy Amanda left. She was a true believer that really loved God. May God bless you both and keep spreading the love of God because nothing is waisted.
It took about an hour, but they finally got to the root of the problem... we love money and as we all know the love of money is the root of all evil... and that is Americas original sin... it is our love of money above all else.... even the Christ Jesus who we say we love.... but in reality our greatest god is money... Yahweh have mercy on us, for we suck

This was such a gem and I needed to hear this BIG time! I’m so thankful for this!
I lost my husband in an instant earlier this year. This episode is so heartbreaking yet encouraging for me at the same time. I've said many of the same things that Kellie said in this episode. She's right; we live in such a broken world.
We are so glad you found us @gkmoom . May God continue to bring comfort and healing to you.
Such a blessing 28 years marriage to this chaos
For God so Loved the world that He gave His only Begotten son that who ever believed in Him should not perished but have everlasting life.(John 3:16) God love us all even in our situations, He still loves us.
Bro ! Invite Randy Kay 🎉 he died and went there
Thank you. This is a great interview. I appreciate your willingness to share your journey, Kellie!! Praying for you!
Waaa a very tough experience..may the Lord heal you deeply
I have some struggle
Thank you❤
The mystery of God, the ministry of presence to allow the Holy Spirit to do the healing 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Christians are the worst at wrestling! We don’t know how to bear each other burdens, but we can surely pick up an offense!
Deconstruct it as long as you have the framework to build it back!
Yes, God allows us to experience trials that we don't expect and would never choose to bring us closer to Him.
Sooo, soo wonderful and humbling 😔🫂🙏🙏🙏 God's faithfulness and mercy 😔even his love.
Thank you so much. Blessings to you.
Watch some Nick Vucijic who was born with no arms and legs if you want some inspiration.
She is 🔥… I need her as my therapist
We often confuse results with reasons. The beauty out of ashes is a result not a reason. I matters not its worth it. Amen
Wow. So many great thoughts and words. Couldn't stop taking notes. Love Ellie. <3
Krist…you need to write a book
I can't believe how similar I am and my life experience has been to this ❤ SO thankful that God ALWAYS works things for good and his existence is not questionable 💞 Conditional love exists and THANK God for the peace 🕊️ and freedom 🙏
This is so beautiful ❤️
Excellent excellent conversation!!!!!! Wow such articulation and knowledge!!!! Love it and want more of these compassionate theological genre!!!!
Why would Gods plan for your wife be to die a horrible death as a pastors wife? It wasn’t so then why did He let it happen? Yes we know the cliche Christian answers of We live in a fallen world We will have hard times But why do some people have great plans and others don’t? How can we say He is our protector if He doesn’t protect? Allowing pain to teach a lesson if it was an earthly parent we would call abuse. Your ministry is He turns all things for good but how do you tell an unbeliever God loves everyone and doesn’t have favorites?
Thanks. Such a wonderful, education interview. God bless you
Really touched by your ministry because I too have been through heck...and survivng!( With Gods help!) So I relate to this podcast! God bless you!
Thank you for sharing ur story Aubrey. I'm listening to this over a yr later, but God knew I needed this right now. I too lost a best friend to cancer 3 yrs ago and it's been a hard journey, very lonely at times, trying to navigate life with out Christy. I have longed to hear from someone else who has walked this unique loss and it has done my heart good to hear your story. I'm so sorry for the profound loss u have had and still are experiencing in losing Jenn.
The podcast great but we need to hear more of Kristi's childhood and the person she was married to and why the divorce and how her children we re able to process being isolated from their dad.... kindly open up some more on these areas
You can hear her entire story on Episode 100 of the podcast … Episode 100 is not on UA-cam but you can listen to it on any audio podcast platform.
A very mature conversation.. learning a lot from this.. thanks for sharing
Is that his mother?
this was amazing!!!
It takes someone with zero remorse to do what he did! However we pray God breaks that heart of stone! So sad! Also keeping others safe is important! God forgives however there is consequences to choices we make. The reality there is a devil and who posses people.
It's what Jesus Christ did for the thief on the cross!!
I just found out about your lost Pastor David. I have been listening to your book No Time Is Wasted. Praying for you and your family. and that those who commited this crime may come to know the Lord! We grew up in the Bronx however we where brought up in Christ. Not all inner city kids kill and do drugs.
What an awesome word! Thank you
Thank you pastors 😢 The operating out of fear really clicked and hit me, the concern to bring something up etc after losing my wife and now being in an amazing relationship 😭 God is sooo good, so, so good. He knows just what we need...and just at the right time. I've been reading your story and yes, God is so good, so merciful 😭 somehow even using your story to work in my life, our life at just the right time, even this podcast. Thank you, thank you Lord Jesus 😢😔🫂🙏❤️🫂🙏🫂
I am thinking about the comparison thing, I think of Saul trying to fit David with his armor, and for David, it didn't feel right, so he refused it when he was going to go and fight Goliath. We have to fight the battles with what God has fitted for us. On a side note, we met a Mark Miller from Indianapolis, a few weeks ago, he serves with a missionary organization, any way, I asked if he knew you Davy and he said, "Actually, I know his wife Kristi better as my daughters went to school with Kristi." We thought that was pretty cool and realizing that being in the family of God puts us all in close proximity. :)
My marriage ended sadly also, but he says he still loves me and will always help me. We were married for only 6 years. But I thought he was the love of my life. As a Christian I kept trying to prove my love and kept praying for him. All the while he was moving on behind the scenes. He still wants to be involved with my son who is not his, and to financially help me but this keeps me tangled up with him. Do you just completely cut off? No access at all
My Supervisor shared this video with me and I promise you this video is the answer to my prayers and I can't wait to order the book! There is soooooo much I've gleaned from.... overwhelmed with words!!! How powerful!
