Airstream was founded by Wally Byam, an adventurous spirit born on the 4th of July in 1896. His upbringing included living in a wooden wagon towed by a donkey, similar to how his grandparents traveled along the Oregon Trail. This experience inspired his vision for travel trailers. Wally Byam’s dream was to build a travel trailer that moved like a stream of air, was lightweight enough to be towe...

How lovely to see Andover as it was . What a shame it isn’t like that anymore. To think we used to drive up and down the high street with all those people shopping and the market stalls.. I was newly married in the 60’s. So lovely to see these videos. Thank you.
Very good video, but, who picked the music? Also, Horex WHAT?
It’s The Great Romondo from Only Fools and Horses.
Bill Clinton was NOT President until 1993. Your date for this clip is WRONG.
Yes, the year is 1998.
Fun buggy full of kitty cats and rainbow unicorns flying on toast.
Since Clarkson's epic showing of what an unsafe turd of an idea the Reliant Robin (and ALL 3 wheelers) were I am surprised anybody would admit to owning one today.
Jeremy Clarkson is an unsafe turd that would seem advisable for no one to consume.
What ever Rob does, I love it.❤
Quentin Willson once told me to scrap my reliant Rialtoin a comments section once because it was blowing black smoke. i took the engine apart replaced the pistons and rings and no smoke. Admittedly i was quite scared as id never taken an engine apart before but hey 3 days later running great. Shame on you Mr Willson
Just got in from travelling in my dirty yellow MK2 Robin, in this small Dorset town its quite a celebrity... Parts are 99% British Leyland parts bin with a scattering of Ford, mine will do a proven 96mph and get there very quickly, £100 a year tax, a negligible amount insurance, 70-75mpg+ and I got rid of them silly Triumph Herald seats and have a set of Microcar front seats but have waiting in the wings a pair of grey leather MX5 heated "tombstone" seats with the speaker built into the headrest.
“Relax you’re in a Reliant!” Hell no!!!
Quentin was suprislngly tight-lipped about what driving the Robin was like
35 quid for a pair of plastic chairs fucking rip-off rob
Had 3 of these Robin Reliants including one colour Milka chocolate pink. Brake while cornering it tips onto its side. Someone steps out in front you swerve and brake same time then over it goes again. Impossible to avoid potholes go either side the middle wheel gets it.
Had a Spanish work mate in the early eighties who had one,he had to go to the Spanish embassy in London, and asked me would I go with him,no problem mate,OMG I have no words!! It was a 500 mile round trip give or take a bit, don't think I spoke for 2 days after getting back.
But it was an adventure! Where's your spirit!?
@hunchanchoc8418 Cant deny that buddy 40 odd years on still makes me smile.👍🥃
EyeWonceOwnedAReliantMotorCar
I sounds like you did😂
And i say good.ridance to the monumentally stupid things! .. just like like the Mini .. give me a V8 with a a column shift any day
My granddad called his a plastic jag 😂
Only a mental case would buy one!
so what turned Quentin into a plug in pain in the ass prick?
The Reliant factory here in Tamworth is long gone, replaced by a housing estate.
What about the reliant kitten with four wheels
Coffin on wheels?
Quentin Wilson now an EV Shill Salesman 😂
I really cant stand Quentin Wilson.
You never see him and Mr Burns together at the same time ( Simpsons) 😊😊
Anyone thats had the misfortune of riding a motorcycle to work 365 days a year in the freezing cold icy roads would jump at the chance of having one of these, must have felt like luxury being in a heated cabin on an icy morning, not your first choice of car but a damn sight safer than a motorcycle on icy roads!!
When i went from a motorcycle to a Reliant, quite frankly it was akin to getting into Bentley.
I remember skidding on ice patch, sliding along it into sudden grip again only for the vehicle flip onto its side after nearly rolling onto roof. I was eating a pack of biscuits and they ended up everywhere inside the car.
@@jagmarc very bad luck.
@@MrStephen777 I was finding biscuits for months afterwards.
Yes, it was all about available choices at the time. Nowadays, you rarely see a motorcycle being ridden at night, outside a city, let alone in freezing weather. Essentially, it's all about access to credit.
3 of us toured Ireland in my Mk5 Regal. It had a roof rack!
Ive got a mk 1 robin saloon and i love it . Yes its terrible to drive but its got something about it modern cars dont
The smell of resin and damp?
@jonathaneastwood2927 😂 no i mean it has a personality . Modern cars are boring
In 1971 as a student, I so wanted a Bond Bug, but my Dad who was paying for my education required my safety in a 4 wheeled metal box. This was later demonstrated in 1975, by the death of a colleague in a road smash of a Regal. The Kitten was more expensive than a Mini, which I really enjoyed.
For a biker with an imminent addition to the family and no car licence, these were the perfect solution. I still look back on our canary yellow Robin of 35 years ago with great fondness.
This is just a small clip from "cars the star"
And no mention of Del & Rodney's 3 wheeled van!
The problem with Reliant three wheelers is that it was like driving a Morgan three wheeler at high speed, in reverse.
And the engine in the Morgan can actually be serviced easily.
How would Morgan's layout work with a saloon, estate or especially a van configuration?
@@Zeem4 It wouldn't, its always idiots that say about a morgan when one is a sports car and the other is a full 4 seater
@@Zeem4The result would certainly be more fun to drive. Case in point, the "T-Rex" from Canada.
@@thedeadstig123 Haha, the comment I originally wrote said something like that, but I rewrote it because I started rambling :D
Please don’t tell anyone they were made in the UK, 😅
Back when Britain felt like Britain and we made our own stuff. In 2024 we have nothing left apart from Henry hoovers. Everyone looks angry and fed up now and you can’t blame them.
Whose trousers was he wearing?? 🫣
Why show del boys car when talking about a robin
Because Reliant is synonymous with Only Fools and Horses
he’s just such a lovely guy! ❤❤❤
Can you still drive one on just a motorcycle license I wonder...
yes if your over 21
Didn't like the Robin but loved the scimitar cheers 🍻
Dels van was a Regal MK6 Supervan3
2000 just let go Politicians should be ashamed
Did I mishear or was a factory of 2000 people only turning out 40 cars a week? This sounds extremely inefficient even for back then or am I wrong?
misleading information, they say up to 2000 people but not when, there was a time when they were more than only cars, and even then they were doing over 300 a week during the 1960s. At one point the Robin was the world’s most-produced fibreglass car, more than the Corvette. They might’ve been down to 40 a week when they went bankrupt. The production was hand layup though, so it was labour intensive and partly to blame for why Reliant struggled when it came to profit margins.
They also done a lot of fibreglass products outside of cars. Bodywork for trains, busses etc.
@@cambs0181and of course the Ford RS200 group B body panels
Really? What was it? The cost of all the self tapping screws? I am not kidding you, I found raw plugs in my car last week. That is what the flippin' number plate light holders screw into! If they got any cheaper the thing would be cardboard haha.
I remember going on a school trip to the Reliant factory in the mid 90's, was just how you imagine it old boys smoking wearing brown work coats. Really were marvellous times!
Just how I remember Andover as a kid, thanks for sharing.

Ahhhhh, back when we still thought there was a chance of saving the country. Those were the days.
That’s what happens when you enhance in too much trade with an enemy like the US. Success at the cost of the commonwealth costed us all.
Wasn't Del Boy's a Regal as that was the van as opposed to the family saloon four seater Robin? Still, I bet both keeled over taking a bend at 40+ mph.

When there was a country worth fighting for still
@charlesburgoyne-probyn6044 still worth a fight, dear Charlie.
Wow, does this stir memories. While in high school, I got my first bike, a 200cc Zundapp in '57 and began to learn about motorcycling and through our local dealers. We had a friendly dealer in Wichita who sold NSU and BMW and I so wanted a new NSU S-20 he'd just gotten to sell; what a gorgeous machine. The Max series had to be the best 250cc cycles that one could have. Later on, I had a BMW R26 which was the finest road machine I'd ever own, in it's own class of excellence. I raced an Adler Scrambler for a time and won races but the collapse of the German cycle industry did have a sad feel of loss as the '60s progressed. This video is very appreciated for it's look into such an exciting time in the industry and how it affected so many of us new comers.
Habe eine NSU quickly gehabt die war Baujahr 1960 war Verkleidet hatte zwar eine 50 cc motor.
Today’s ambulances now carry that weight
I remember it at night on the last leg along the A34, one of the bogies got stuck on the verge at Milton Interchange two miles from Didcot. I missed the last bit driving over the narrow rail bridge to the Power Station, still not sure how they managed that!
