Neptune is a BETTER WRITTEN Character Than You Think! (Part 2/2)
We're back for Part 2, baby! I'm genuinely shocked by the amount of attention and positive reception Part 1 received. I guess the algorithm took a liking to my rambling about the cute pink-haired pudding girl, eh? But seriously, it really warms my heart knowing so many of you enjoyed Part 1, so I hope Part 2 leaves you with an even more satisfied feeling!
In this video - the second of two parts - I elaborate on what Megadimension Neptunia VII does for Neptune's writing, and how it dramatically improves her writing from Victory.
Oh, and Happy New Year, everyone! This is my last video of 2024, so what better way to go out than with a bang, right?

Neptune is a BETTER WRITTEN Character Than You Think! (Part 1/2)

Hyperdimension Neptunia is my favorite series of all time (surprise, surprise), and multiple aspects about it have kept me drawn to it for such a long time. However, one such aspect that I've rarely seen in-depth discussion on is the character writing, particularly Neptune's. In this video - the first of two parts - I explain Neptune's characterization on a surface level, as well as discuss her...

It's the end of the road, everyone. Well, we've made it; we've reached the end of Megadimension Neptunia VII! We close the game out with the Revival Ending and everything that happens in there, as well as a conclusion message from yours truly. This is the last video of this series, so I tried my best to make it special. Going through this game yet again and being able to share all of my favorit...

Well, we're nearly at the finale. . .and it makes me so sad that it's already almost over. Aren't you upset too, viewer? We continue with our journey through the Heart Dimension arc, and we now reached our fork in the road! Here, we get a choice between two routes: the Heart Dimension route, and the Hyper Dimension route. Each route has different cutscenes, encounters, and their own out-of-cont...

As Neptune would say. . .it's time for the climax of this plot! With the second arc of VII wrapped up, we now begin our journey into the final lap of this game: the third arc, the Heart Dimension arc. An arc that, while pretty clearly a tad rushed in some areas, overall offers some of the most emotional and highest-stakes moments of the whole series, and to me, wraps up this game quite nicely. ...

Okay, I'm actually starting to run out of things to put at the top of these descriptions. . . We move on to the last of the four stories and take a quick break in Leanbox for Vert's story. This is, in my opinion, the weakest of the four stories and is easily my least favorite. Vert is a character I don't particularly like that much, and having Nepgear join her accentuates that a tad bit. S-Sha ...

I'm not sure what else to put at the top of these descriptions. Uh. . .Nepu-Nepu? Stepping our way into the second half of the Hyper Dimension Arc, we make ourselves at home in Lowee and tackle Blanc's story next! This is, personally speaking, my second favorite story, after Neptune's. It has some pretty charming writing, a great dynamic between Blanc and C-Sha, as well as some fun interactions...

You know the deal by now, so let's just cut right to the chase, shall we? Continuing along with the Hyper Dimension Arc, we pay a visit to Lastation as we go through Noire's story and see what is in store for our favorite twin-tailed Goddess. I find this to be on the weaker half of the stories, personally. As much as I love Noire, I find K-Sha to be a bit of a. . .strange, and oddly unsatisfyin...

Seeing more analytical Neptunia content like this on YT is great to see! I love the editing in this video too! So great job, and I can't wait to watch more from you!
I can just imagine the mf on the other side of the screen looking like the most stereotypical nerd in history lmfao ur voice is right there man no offence
oh no trust me, you're absolutely right LMFAO
I've always loved Neptune ever since I played the series for the first time, and these only made me appreciate her more 💜Neptunia is definitely a series that has more to it than meets the eye.
For showing the true best girl the respect she deserves *SUBS*
I've only played Re;Birth 1, but with that I gained an idea of Nep being a character just like you described in the video. Someone goofy, but not just because, but to cheer other people up, and to go out of her way to help everyone. I feel like although Purple heart does feel different sometimes, it's just because that's more appropriate for the situation, she's transforming because the situation is serious and needs to take it seriously. Purple heart has done nep-like things too, like fly back to get to eat her pudding.
Personally - before watching the video - I believe Neptunia in 1 is awesome. But after 1 they had no idea what to do with her, and unfortunately 2 flopped a bit, and the Sister generation was unfairly blamed for it. So now we are stuck with a caricature of Neptunia as the games try to recreate what they think worked in 1 and they are, way, way off. And I really do not even know what are they thinking. "Hey let's add the antagonist from 1 as a callback to the players that enjoyed the first game. Also let's make Nep be completely unaware and not remember that story we are referencing, that will make players like Neputnia for sure "
Next up a video about Vert?
Based af. We need more pro neps in these dark times
I'v been convins't befor thes vids I like Neptune
9:40 I caught that! ...and I want one. Anyways lol, VII felt like a more "Mature" Neptunia game. The jokes were there, but not constant and interruptive. Banter is certainly there, but not overbearing. It felt like the writers took every criticism so far and refined their technique here. This one was my favorite game in the series (4 Goddess was my favorite gameplay-wise though), and Neptune felt like the hero she needed to be without heavily sacrificing her derpy ways. In defense of the other girls' dreams, I remember thinking to myself the dreams made alot of sense when taking into context their backstories. Uni's confusion towards Noire's also hints at what was stated in the video - Noire along with Blanc and Vert are constantly giving to improve their people's lives. Stands to reason their deepest desires would be selfish - wanting to finally be given something in return. Neptune, while of course clearly loves her people, is satisfied with what she has and doesn't feel the need to improve further. All that's left is her people's happiness. This actually is a direct parallel to what the entirety of Neptunia is parodying - console platforms. Sega at this point is less about platforms and more about third-party publishing and developing. That's their niche now and while I don't have any sales figures or anything they seem to be chugging along. They don't have a "console" to improve upon. But Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo - all three are constantly trying to improve and compete witch each other...though I think Microsoft may be going the way of Sega soon lol. But yeah. Same reason why Vert has no sisters - Xbox has no handhelds. Also 15:55 Chika. I love her design so much. Black and green are one of my favorite color mixes. Yeah she was a bit one-note with her fangirling of Vert but I was hoping she'd become her legit sister and be a mainstay in the series.
I personally *Loved* Mk2 (or Sisters Generation, that's the version I played) purely because of that one absolutely devastating ending. I always like to get the "worst" endings first in games so that I can leave that game's universe on a positive note with the Best ending, so when I heard about a super bad one, I jumped on it. It was amazing. I loved how every single morsel of doo doo hit the fan and the ramifications of it all. Each "moment" (not gonna spoil it) was heart wrenching, in a good way. It showed to me that the writers weren't afraid to get truly, emotionally dark. Suffice it to say I remember immediately hopping back in after the credits and marathoning it to the good ending. As for the main topic (Pudding Girl), I remember starting Victory (V Generation for me) and getting whiplash from how not serious it was at all. It felt like the writers greatly over-compensated. I also remember the constant put-downs Nepgear had to endure, which made me think "Did people not like Sisters Generation so much the writers felt they should beat up on Nepgear?" It was weird to say the least, and I barely remember much else about that particular Neptunia game.
21:32 Nintendo does not want Neptune to be happy unfortunately...
To quote that one episode of South Park: "You're thinking with your dick. Put your dick away. That's your dick talking."
11:40 explaining how Kurome is not Uzume but at the same time is. Dw Proxi dude this is basically a similar situation with Neptune and Plutia since they’re both the same person too but from a parallel dimension. No confusion needed 👍
??? i don't understand; neptune and plutia are NOT the same person, the only true similarities they share are that they're very lazy and they have a drastic personality shift when they transform besides that, the point of me saying what i said about kurome was supposed to be a joke for the people who didn't understand what exactly i was referring to
I might watch this later. got recommended before I was about to go to sleep.
The only thing I hate about the series is the LACk of the actual games being made I mean sure I think most of the games out now after V2 are all spin offs or side stories or even main stories about side characters
I know you said in part 1 that you weren't going to talk about Purple Heart since, despite her and Neptune being the same person, their personalities are vastly different, but Compile Heart and Idea Factory seem to be letting some of Neptune's personality leak into Purple Heart's, so maybe we can get a video on how the two personalities influence each other and what THAT says about Neptune's character?
Neptune is a character I would like to be friends with, because I think it would be fun to have her around.
Can you please make a Vert Video
Neptune for Smash
As a fan of the series i agree this Planeptune is the best nation a great cpu and candidate along with relatable allies i dint hate on much Neptunia characters but i will point out the foaws their character while playing and Victory is the best game because the characters are at their best and we get to see themat their best Nepgear is still a veey relatable younger sister that has trouble with letting go and leaving friends behide Neptune likes to make everyone happy and bring joy to everyone comoa and IF dont really change much cause i think they stay consistent Noire Blanc and Vert ultra version where downgrades from theur Hyperdimension seleves Noire being arrogant and unpleasant at times in victory Blanc is just less version from the hyper dimension and that due to Noire and Blanc lacking siblings in that dimension a core feature in the Hyperdimension and Vert cause Nepgear ti get traumatized by Iris heart and lets compare orange heart to Iris heart both are stronge neely introduced cpu that are extremely power but it different Plutia is strong mentaiwhike Uzume is strong physically plus Uzume is a lot nicer to those even if they get under her skin plutia however would do anything for you to be scared and terrified of her which yes makes sense for Iris hear character but it was better protray in the animation where Plutia helps her friends not harm her friends aka Nepgear H Vert H Noire H Vert Uni Rom Ram Compa Peashy and her versions of the CPUs
Neptune in victory was written horrible in victory and Plutia did not help both would do mean things to their allies and suffer little to no consequences for their actions like Iris Heart just dominated everyone by how she act alone it not funny it's mean spirited plus the animation and games afterwards portray Neptune better cause I love her dynamic with Nepgear it my favorite duo in the series yes Neptune has been pair with other characters before her sister but their bond is so wholesome and heck I might like the Planeptune ending in rebirth 2 more cause of it but the true ending shows Nepgear leading in the spot light with her chasing her and not the other way around Neptune amazing character and is my second favorite next to Nepgear cause I tend to act like them most of the time throughout my life growing up.
I am also like to add megadimension Neptunia was the best game cause the characters great story great three in one plus it does the multiple story bit better then Sonic heroes did cause each nation is different and not a repetitive chore to go through
I have finished the rebirth 1-2-3 and VII in the last 3 months and honestly, knowing the tragedy of the Sega Dreamcast, Uzume and Umio's story outshined all other characters imho. Neptune and all others are fine but how reflective of Uzume and Umio's story to Dreamcast and Dreamcast fans is legendary.
Neptune wanting what she thinks is best for everyone can be applied to the ending of Rebirth 1 if you think about it, despite Arfoire being an enemy and has been trying to kill her for the entire time she knew her, she still went out of her way to try and save her in the end even at the cost of her own life and in the True/Good ending she succeeded, much to Histoire's joy.
We need a Neptunia 2D fighting game
Neptwodnia!
Nice vid
A rather informative video here! I'd like to see more of this coming from you (maybe the other CPU's, kinda like a dive into their mindset and characteristics. Noire and Blanc are good examples. Vert will be interesting to look at). 4:54 In regards to the difference between the two, it may not just be the localization. The matter of the fact is, each and every Neptunia game has a different team of writers and, in my opinion, the higher-ups likely reacted based on fan opinions going around at the time. As you said last vid, mk2 had mixed views back in the day, so the writing in Victory was meant to zero in on the comedy aspect since the previous title was quite serious (to limited success, of course, since nowadays, mk2/Rebirth2 is well celebrated). Of course, once the mixed views regarding the story of Victory set in, the higher-ups had to scramble and change again, leading to how the anime and Victory-II were written, especially in regards to Neptune, Nepgear and even Plutia (seriously, anime!Plutia is just amazing!) 14:16 - 19:31 - It's pretty interesting to see the dichotomy of the CPU's and their dreams. Three of them had selfish desires while the remaining one had a selfless one, but in my opinion, there's a tragedy to this revelation. The fact that these are DREAMS, impossible goals that these four cannot see themselves achieving in their lives in any shape or form. Think about it. Noire wants to be a successful VO, but doing that full-time requires her to abandon everything she worked hard for and achieved, one she held great pride over (something Uni looks her up to for as well). Blanc wanted a more suitable body, to be more confident in who and what she is, but because her nation strives towards the welfare of children and family, it is not possible. Even Vert likely cannot have a CPU Candidate of her own because of, what I believe, to be how her citizens view her, a self-reliant and independent (read: unapproachable) woman who can manage both her nation and her gaming habits in tandem. But for Neptune, happiness is but a fleeting emotion among many others, and the people will constantly be beset by troubles, be it from small instances like robberies or missed opportunities, or world-ending disasters like the Deity of Sin, the CPU of Tari or even Kurome's machinations. Which honestly makes Neptune all the more aspiring, since she keeps striving for that selfless dream regardless of the odds, which she achieves by the True Ends of both Victory games, being able to link the two dimensions together so she can see Plutia and Peashy whenever she wants and save Uzume together with Nepgear, her human self and everyone in the party despite the odds. (Noire is a close second, but even she understands that her nation must come first). Sorry for the long text, but I wanted to get my two credits in.
I always thought that was interesting about the dream sequence that Neptune goes through, how hers was the only one that wasn't completely self-centered. At one point that got me thinking about what their worst nightmares are, but I'll leave that for future materials.
i think this was good ! i do generally think positively about the series, and maybe some anti's have some real issues they point out about it, but i really liked this. if you do more videos... maybe think about talking about the different villains and the subtle characterizations seen in chirper interactions. there's lots of things in the games that people miss out on just because it's presented as the anime booba game
Thanks for watching, and I'm glad you thought that the video was good! As for your suggestions: - I wouldn't mind taking a look at the villains, especially from the main series' timeline. I may not think as highly of a few, but I think overall, they're a solid group of antagonists and examining them in finer detail could be fun. I'd especially love to try and go over the more well-received villains such as Kurome and SVS Arfoire. - The chirper interactions, on the other hand, that could be a bit monotonous and lacking substance; generally speaking, the chirper interactions, especially prior to VII I'd say, are usually very short and don't offer much in the way of building character. They're simply a few lines of dialogue that are a small distraction from the main gameplay, and are made to give you a little chuckle. Some of the sub-events from the games could hold some weight, though, so I'll keep it in mind.
For me is Neptunia also my most favourite franchise of all time. Nothing can overtop Neptunia. :) The problem I see is that there are people who are too focused on MAINLINE. With its spin-offs, Neptunia produced just as great games and ideas as in the mainlines. Despite many spin-offs, other game series don't have the problem of fans becoming so attached to mainlines, so why is this done with Neptunia?
I'd say it's because, to a majority of fans, the mainline games as well as a select few spin-offs are the pinnacle of the franchise, VII especially. And knowing that a new *officially-stated* mainline game hasn't released in what is GOING to be 10 years, it doesn't exactly give the constant spin-offs and remakes/re-releases a positive reputation. Especially not when a lot of the spin-offs are of sub-par quality.
@@Prox1maticYou described the points well. For my part, I have to say that it was only through Neptunia that I really learned that fun and not technological performance should come first. There are technically outdated or less well-designed games that are more fun than so-called AAA titles. Of course, I'm happy if Neptunia comes from a purely technical point of view, e.g. graphically at least at a level that is in line with today's average, but the series has touched my heart so much that I'm most interested in the stories and possibilities of Neptunia. I actually love all Neptunia games, the only exception where the gameplay wasn't quite my thing is Hyperdevotion Noire Goddess Black Heart. It wasn't so bad that it was bad, but it's not my style of play either. But I love how the developers always surprise with something new, including in terms of gameplay. Otherwise, I love the series just as it is and am happiest with it. For me, there is no better franchise than this one. Thank you for your reply. Can I combine your videos and upload them to my UA-cam channel? You explain the series in a very beginner-friendly way, I would like to support Neptunia in all areas. I would point out that the video originally came from you and add the relevant links.
> Can I combine your videos and upload them to my UA-cam channel? Sorry, but, I'd rather my videos - my work - be relegated to my channel, and I'd prefer if it stayed that way as well.
@@Prox1matic Thats okay I accept this. Thank you for this video.

You're making me want to work harder on Neptune Quest 2 now (fan game), and give the Neps some better writing examples. I've been stuck on Chapter 2 for what feels like 3 years now.
I work on a Neptunia project too but its a video project. A long video.. :)
@angelicplay3419 The Nep love here is heartwarming~
@@Methrael absolutely. Glad to read that there are more Nep Nep fans. :)
I would like to hear your thoughts on how Neptune is throughout the spin offs and if you think she’s consistent with her characterization.
This video is kinda making me want to replay VII ngl. Neptune has always been my favorite from this series, so clicking this was a no brainer. Good video overall, I liked thet you often referenced direct dialogue from the game to back up your points. VII did a lot of good for the series and its my favorite entry in the franchise (i have the VII PS4 skin that came with the original limited edition release lol) and I especially liked that the writers remembered that Neptune is a character originally defined by the dichotomy of her two forms. It has always been my belief that Neptune and Purple Heart simply emphasize different sides of her core personality and it comes through very well in VII when either form is always effectively the same person under a different lens. Neptune will usually be carefree but often speaks from the heart when needed; Purple Heart will usually be serious but isn't afraid to show how she feels or let her hair down. Since you compared the dreams of the goddesses, I kind of wish you also compared the relationships each goddess has with their respective counterpart from the Gold Third. Although they all end up befriending the Gold Third member they know (well, not so much with Vert and S-Sha), there's often a conflict brewing in the background of this relationship, or they start of adversarial. None of this is present with Neptune and B-Sha. Neptune befriends her extremely quickly and rather than feel usurped or humiliated, she's thankful to B-Sha for looking after her nation. The two simply move on to working together to steward Planeptune and otherwise hang out like normal friends when they're not working. They never have any conflict until B-Sha is literally brainwashed into madness (not a unique situation among the Gold Third to be truthful), and even then, that fight isn't Neptune's final boss like it is for the others, it's the one right after when B-Sha joins up with Neptune and they finally stand together and protect Planeptune side by side, because they are both *heroes.*
I was considering bringing up the other Gold Third as a comparison to Neptune and B-Sha's relationship. However, 1. It would detract from the main topic of the video in my opinion, unlike the comparison I made with the dreams as it delves into the real specifics of their characters. And 2. I already explained that Neptune and B-Sha were able to get along well despite not knowing each other very well. They were total strangers (besides their names) and yet Neptune still sought to help her and maintain a cordial relationship with her, as emphasized by her willingness to work together in running the nation until everything is sorted. Appreciate the comment though, glad you enjoyed the video!
As a Hyperdimension Neptunia fan I loved this video. Neptune has been favorite goddess since the start and seeing a video exploring her deeper personality is great to see. Honestly this video was so good I hope you make a video on Neptunes relationship with all the other goddess, candidates and close friends and how they have changed or not over the course of the series.
If anyone wants to really see her personally read the novel hyperdimension neptunia high school because nep who's telling the story from here side and describ everything in detail
3:40 I actually got a Poster of this CG in my copy of the original none VR version of the game. Not sure if every copy came with the poster but mine did
1:34 Four of my favorite Series right there. One of my other favorites are the Dragon Quest games but some don't exactly have the most In depth character writing
Let's not forget Neptune basically sacrifices herself during the events at the PC Continent in Sisters vs Sisters before the story officially starts
If we talked about the spinoff there are many moment when she acted with kindness
Jokingly ofcourse saying the main character cant lose. But if shes breaking the forth wall she knows that this is Nepgears game so selflesly sacrificing herself so the others can go and do their thing without her.
@@baltulielkungsgunarsmiezis9714 in the novel she sacrificed her self for nepgear and after that she had amnesia even when she's the main character
@@Talha.gaming.1-k1r Sisters vs Sisters technically is canon as it blatantly references Canon events from Megadimension
For people who don't want to play Megadimension for the context Of Uzume & Kurome Kurome is basically the Separated Darkness within the Soul of Uzume. Uzume = the Pure Light of the Previous Goddess of Planeptune Kurome = the Delusion of the same goddess who misinterpreted her own Sealing and thought the people sealed her maliciously when it was actually her own wish to be sealed because of how uncontrollable and dangerous her ability to make Dreams real is
Best girl of all space and time!
I feel like I've got a bit of a different view on the dreams thing. it's not so much that Nep-Nep's dream is less selfish, but that she's already satisfied with what she's got. ultimately Vert's, Blanc's, and Noire's dreams each focus on them getting something that they lack in reality but in Neptune's case, based on the comments from Compa and Nepgear, this is a fairly common sight that they've seen before. it seems clear from this that Neptune's wish and dream is basically just an ordinary day. one without any kind of crisis or adventure. It's probably a day where she'll get nagged by Histoire and have to do some work that she doesn't really want to do, but it's a day that she's satisfied with to the point that she could not wish for more than she already has. this likely contributes to why she's able to appear carefree so often, it's hard not to be carefree when you're already living your ideal life. your points still stand, this is just an extra layer on top of it.
I agree with this take, I've basically held the same notion since I saw that scene. The funny thing is that this idea that Neptune's ideal of happiness is something she already lives all the time is that it retroactively changes how you perceive Neptune throughout the series. Although it's more explicit and evident in VII, Neptune has always had moments when she goes around helping and talking to her citizens just because she can, even in Victory, and Neptune's always had a much more outgoing and friendly approach to socializing. Even at her worst, Neptune has always wanted the people around her to be happy. (Regarding Victory, I honestly think part of the reason she becomes a jerk there is Plutia. Plutia kind of bullies everyone to get her way and even if she's a kind girl, she's also very selfish and obstinate about getting her way, so it kind of rubs off on Neptune when Plutia latches onto her and they basically become a pseudo-couple for a couple decades) The dreams also change a bit how you see the other goddesses of course, particularly Vert, but Neptune's highlights the reason she's the main protagonist and face of the series: she's the hero and it is her sincere desire to share her happiness and goodwill with everyone.
