Instead, I decided to use the Bolt Action Moderns rules, a fan adaptation of the popular WW2 platoon level skirmish game, Bolt Action. This version is available on Jay’s Wargaming Madness blog for free along with some army lists, link below. If you enjoy Bolt Action but want to...

fantastic looking book ill be aiming to get a copy
That terrain is class
Thanks! We’re very lucky to have a good range of terrain between our club members and the club’s collection!
Most excellent table sir
Thank you very much. I can’t take the credit as the guys at the club put this one together. However, we do try hard to make a good looking table.
They look cracking are you doing crete games? 1/72 about 20mm scale?
Thanks for the compliment! Yeah they are 20mm. The plan is to use them for Fall Gelb and Crete!
@TsCreativeRamblings sweet I've always wanted to do crete. Ive started using matt varnish over my contrast paints and gives a nice finish
@jmaccsarmiesofArda awesome! I’ll probably do a mass Matt varnish spray session when the weather gets warmer. I’ve never done Crete before but think it could be fun!
@TsCreativeRamblings I just use brush on AK supermatt. I've had too many bad experiences with spray varnish It scares me now 😆
I’ve heard lots of good things about the AK Super Matt varnish!
You can call this army anything you want, Aztec, Roman, Gaul etc.etc.
That is the beauty of 2mm armies is the shapes and layout of the figures tend to all for multi use. However, I tend to add flags/banners and I use certain colour schemes to differentiate units/armies. Thanks for your comment and support!
So this … S&H supplement …. is this the Punic wars supplement coming out soon or an unannounced, secret, supplement?
It has the Punic Wars in it as well as plenty of Alexander the Great goodness.
It's not just me that keeps buying stuff? I'm keeping a lid on spend by accumulating free bits from items I'd normally chuck. The rocks idea I'll be interested to see. My own attempts aren't great.
Yeah I always feel like I spend a lot but looking back makes me realise I probably don’t actually spend much. Or I’m missing something… lol I’ll hopefully be putting together that video next so should be long! Thanks as always for your support!
@@TsCreativeRamblings it's true. Looking at my bank statement, I probably spend more on coffee!
It’s amazing how many people do spend a lot on coffee but never consider that to be an area for saving money. It seems hobbies are the first place to make savings! lol
What rules set?
I’m using the rules ‘Strength & Honour’. I’ll be making more content on this soon as I meet with the author to work on some additional rules to cover things like magic and heroes.
That was fun. What’s the source for modern figures?
Thanks for the feedback and support! These are a mix of Caesar Miniatures and Grubby Miniatures. I play in 20mm but there are lots of other manufacturers! One of my favourites which I would highly recommend is Elhiem Miniatures!
Interested to see how the Bolt Action rules convert to modern combat 👍
The video is up so check it out. It was good fun to play!
@@TsCreativeRamblings will do!
Thanks for the support!!
Grognard commenting for the algorithm. Great Series!
Many many thanks!!! I really appreciate your support!
Great review of a great supplement. Really looking forward to the "The Bad and the Ugly' supplement!
Thank you very much for your kind feedback! I agree, I’m very much looking forward to the next supplement! Very tempted by The 7 set of figures…
Bolt action is now on version 3. It is much better rule wise. You might look into buying it. It comes in a small rules only version with a starter army, or the big hardbackwith rules and all basic armylists . One of the new rule structures is a new firing routine. .the firing modifier are easier to figure out and they added a saving throw based on cover. It is a great improvement
Thanks for that. I’ll check it out. Thanks for the support!
cool
Thanks for your support and feedback!
@@TsCreativeRamblings we (Alaska Gen-X wargaming Club) went with Konflict '47 for our rules. works ok, we do add some house rules to make it more to our taste, and to fit our play style. we are using the force structure of k47 for battle groups, and are going to be using BA3 army structure for campaign and regular large army play. its a cool quick system. for modern minis we get from empress, under fire, and gringo 40. if you liked BA, give K47 a shot. happy gaming
Thanks for that! A really interesting idea. I’ve not played K47 but have seen it played. It was a little too crazy for my liking but a neat idea. Definitely some good model choices there. I generally play in 20mm.
Unwatchable, due to the constant sliding.
Thank you for your feedback. I’d be curious if anyone else feels the same.
@@TsCreativeRamblings I do not fully agree. I found the video enjoyable enough.
Thanks very much for your feedback! Glad to hear others found it enjoyable.
Nice one Carl! very clear as ever. 🙂
Thanks Ian! Really appreciate the feedback and support!
Great history - wargaming did not begin with GW. ;)
You’re absolutely right there! Thanks for your support!
Great intro to the hobby - and thank you for showing a broad selection of rules rather than only the big players.
Thanks for the feedback and support! I’m hoping this series will help those who are curious about the hobby get in to it. I think it’s really important to show the diversity of rulesets out there. As an author of a fairly small ruleset, I’m a big believer that the are fantastic rulesets out there that don’t have the financial resources to match the bigger companies.
Looking forward to seeing what the trolls look like.
Me too! I found the design on Thingyverse!
@@TsCreativeRamblings It is amazing what you can get now
I think as we gamers get older we slide more and more into smaller scales. Easier to paint (paradoxically), easier to store, and offers a far bigger strategic game play. Anyway, those look great and are tempting me to do a 2mm scale fantasy force... or 2.
Thank you for your kind comments and support! It’s a really good point you make. I would be curious to do a study to see if that trend is the case. I know for me, the cost and the storage were a big selling point.
Ah, those are the poles you mentioned in chat. They do look good indeed, looking forward to see pics soon.
I’m hoping they will be pretty quick to do and should add some additional interest to the table!
Lights look great. Chain of command is awsome fun. The lotr looks class as well love it
Thanks! Glad they look good. I’ve played more recently and it is quickly growing on me! I’m really excited to get my LotR units on the table.
@@TsCreativeRamblings is it strength and honour you going to use for the 2mm?
That’s right! I’m working with Mark, the author, to work out what tweaks to the rules are needed to make them work for LotR. It won’t take much.
Most important, take time to see all the many options to play something you enjoy, at a price you can afford. One of the best things about UA-cam.
Completely agree! There is so much choice out there and UA-cam and the internet now give people the ability to explore games a bit more before they buy! There is a significant difference in the cost of rules. Not to mention the start up costs for some games. This series will explore a lot of this and more.
Such a beautiful and immersive table, great looking game!
Thanks very much for your kind words! I’m really pleased with the new mat, it fits perfectly on my dining room table. I really appreciate the feedback and support!
Carl that’s a stunning little battle report much better than mine and very well explained stunning job
That’s very kind of you to say! I was worried about the format and length of it but glad to hear you enjoyed it! Thanks for all your support!
@@TsCreativeRamblings l can't wait to see more pal. Great work
Really appreciate it! Not sure what game I’ll do next. We’ll have to see how this one goes down!
Always one of my favorite shows. Good to see you're still alive and kicking mate :)
It’s a particularly good show! Very much so and I’ve been keeping an eye on your work! Been a while since I reviewed your beautiful 1940s civilians! Hope you and the family are well! Thanks for the support!
I’m almost unreasonably excited for this
I’m really pleased although does mean the pressure is on! lol
Thank you for showing!!!
My pleasure! Thanks for your support!
You have been pretty busy!
Indeed! The channel and making content is certainly something that motivates me!
I'm currently working on finishing my BA Waffen Germans getting ready for 3rd edition.
Oh that sounds cool. Do you use them just for BA or do you use them for other rulesets as well?
@@TsCreativeRamblings Just BA since I have a 15mm german army I use for other larger scale games. I may use them for another system that escapes me atm.
That sounds good! I’m planning on playing v1 of BA as that’s what I’ve got and I quite enjoyed it!
Looking forward to the upcoming LotR 2mm content.
Me too! Hopefully I can get these units finished and get them on the table sooner rather than later!
I miss the Hexagon venue, so much bigger and more upmarket.
Not sure I ever went to that venue! Thanks for the comment and the support though!
🙌🏻It's a great purchase and really lovely quality. Cards are a tight fit getting the box outer on, but this is a minor gripe. Looking forward to the next one.
Completely agree with your comments. I’m looking forward to the next supplement as well. Hopefully I can get some games played and recorded for the channel. Thanks for the support!
What happened to your old channel mate?
Not sure what you mean? This is the first channel I ever made. I’ve been going with this since 2013.
@@TsCreativeRamblings Right- I was subscribed, but you popped up again and I wasn't... I assumed you'd started a different channel. Weren't you living in the US?
That’s odd. Yes I was! Thanks for your continued support. Are you based in the US?
@@TsCreativeRamblings UK, but YT does strange things and accounts can disappear and then magically reappear. Used to enjoy your videos, then you slipped off my radar.
Hopefully you will enjoy the new content. I’ve got quite a bit on 2mm scale if that interests you! Also have a new video out tomorrow evening!
SHUT UP!!!
😂 you always need a Sgt Major Shut Up!!
Today is my wedding anniversary. I could perhaps shave a little time off my evening out with the wife. There is certainly a quick job or two i could complete. Although I suspect i may get unsubscribed by having my phone inserted somewhere inaccessible! All joking aside, it's a good approach. I have mentally allocated a day for hobby catching up. It will certainly be eaten into but you have to focus on the time you actually had.
Happy anniversary John! Thanks again for all your support! Putting a day aside for hobby sounds great! I’m thinking of doing that soon!
@@TsCreativeRamblings 23rd September. Probably lots of painting. Mostly jobs I should have done better originally. I have painted SO MANY bases recently.
Oh that sounds good! I’d love to do a live stream that day to give you something to paint to but unfortunately I’ll be in work that day! Enjoy it though, I’m sure you deserve it!
Appreciate that. Maybe a talking book, then.
That’s a good shout! Not sure if they are still available but I used to do a podcast called The Brit, The Yank and The Hobby. That’s a good listen. So is A Few Brits and The Hobby which is the other podcast I did.
off youtube - start hobby time
Who says UA-cam isn’t a hobby or isn’t my hobby? In fact doing a UA-cam channel helps motivate me to do more war gaming and make more content!
Good stuff. Is there much difference between the various brands of acrylic paint pens? Now I’m retired I hope to start painting my 2mm armies, so need to understand which specific brand to buy. I’ll try the Sharpie ones you recommend and see how it goes… Do the Sharpie ones have a specific description/product ID? Cheers 😉
Sharpie Permanent Markers | Fine Point for Bold Details | Assorted Metallic Colours | 3 Marker Pens amzn.eu/d/fFW77PI
These are the ones I bought! Very useful for ancient armies. Very cheap as well. You can get them from Amazon or The Range if you live in the UK.
@@TsCreativeRamblings - many thanks. I’ll check ‘em out. Presumably they also do other colours (rather than just these “metal” colours suitable for armour/shields etc) - I’m thinking of, say, colours for cloaks, uniforms & flesh.
I think so. Amazon had a good selection of Sharpie pens. That is certainly a smart way of getting the other colours ‘painted’. It’s not something I’d considered but now you mention it. I would try and find the fine tip markers as 2mm are very small. Just remember to leave some black showing so you get that shadow effect. That’s what gives the depth and helps to make them pop. Good luck and enjoy!
@@TsCreativeRamblings - thanks. I’ll see how I get on with the Sharpie ones first. I see Amazon has various tip sizes - fine, extra fine and ultra fine so I need to be sure I’m using the appropriate tip size. I wouldn’t wanna paint a 28mm figure with a pen with just a 0.7mm tip but I also wouldn’t want to try using a 1” paintbrush. I’ll hafta investigate further. Thanks for your advice 👍
Nice!
Thanks for your support!
Good points! Related to your tips, perhaps another is trying to complete a step before stopping a session, even if it’s only 10 mins. Eg finish that one colour of painting on those figures or complete the basing on all 3 of those pieces of terrain. Finishing something helps with the good feelings of working towards the overall goal. Also your point about “wellness” is well noted. We can all do with more wellness!
Thanks for your support and comments! Agreed. My only reason for leaving that out is I know I’m often in situations where when my time is up, that’s it I have to move on. Particularly if little one needs me. However, fully agree that completing steps gives us those good feelings and contribute towards our motivation. Completely agree we can all do with more wellness. Thanks again for taking the time to comment and support my channel.
Gluing minis facing the opposite way is a 2mm right of passage. I think you do have to remove and reposition, sorry! Glad youve begun Minas Tirith. What is the ground scale for your game?
lol I think I’m going to leave as is. I can’t bare the thought of trying to take them apart. I’m sure I can get away with the story that they are passing by each other. Not sure on ground scale. My hope is to fit the battle of Pelennor Fields onto a 6x4ft table.
That sounds truly epic. There are so many troops to get on the table, you'll need all that. When I first began gaming, White Dwarf 54, I think, had an inspirational Pelennor Fields scenario. I would just add, Irregular miniatures make some great 2mm siege equipment. Their 6mm battering ram would make an excellent Grond. It towers over the little guys!
Yeah I’m planning on making some siege towers. I do need to look at the army lists once I’ve finished but I’m working off the list in the files section of the Strength & Honour Facebook group.
It's an approach that's less labour intensive than my 40 x 20mm bases. Really showcases the scale.
Hope you found it useful!
Nice one Carl. Very well thought out and easy to follow! 🙂
Thanks Ian for that great feedback! I’ve been planning out new videos trying to make them more useful and enjoyable to viewers!
Really cool is it strength and honour ur using for rules?
Thanks! Yeah it is! They are a really good set of rules! I hope to do some videos of games on the channel, particularly my LotR games!
@@TsCreativeRamblings fantastic i look forward to that
May take a bit of time as I work out the best way to do it and get my set up correct but it is an ambition of mine!
It was Contact Front that led me to this channel so I’d love to see more of that.
Tom, that’s great to know! Many thanks for all your support! I’m considering doing some ‘how to’ videos for Contact Front so if that’s something that would appeal to you, keep your eyes peeled!
I subscribed on the basis of 2mm LOTR, and those projects have been very interesting. I would like to see more 2mm. I feel some battle reporting would show off the models splendidly.
Thanks John for your comments! That’s really helpful! I’d very keen to do some videos of games so if that’s what the audience wants, then that’s what the audience will get! How would you feel about 6mm content? Thanks for your support!
@@TsCreativeRamblings I do like 6mm. It was the scale I chose after abandoning 25 / 28mm. Anything that's multi based, really.
Good to know! I’m tempted with a Peninsula War 6mm British army force for Black Powder so may have to look into that.
@@TsCreativeRamblings Napoleonics is just not a genre I've ever been tempted by. I can appreciate it, but it's not for me. I'm a bit limited in that I don't really collect historical. Again, interesting and would watch. I've recently picked up Age of Hannibal, but it will be rules adapted for fantasy (ironically!)
I’m afraid LotR is scratching the fantasy itch for me. Hopefully the Age of Hannibal rules will work well for you. Who has written/published those?
2mm is always very interesting. Excited about AARs with Strength & Honor LotR. Other smallscale stuff like modeling, painting and so on. Other scales are fine if the content is different to the other thousands of videos out there. Legobuilds, not at all. One big thing; Learn how to do some post-processing regadring sound. Set volume levels and use a compressor on everything coming in from the mic during editing. This is sorely lacking with "boomer-youtubers" and I am sad to say I have had to stop watching more than a few channels because of the huge difference in sound in the videos. LOUD intro, soft voice that is all over the scale so you have to raise you volume alot. EVEN LOUDER OUTRO!!!! *eardrums gone* (Yes, even this vlog has that problem) It takes 30 minutes to learn and makes a world of difference to the quality of videos. Cheers.
Thank you so much for your comments! Really useful and I shall be taking them on board as I move forward. This video was edited on my phone so I very much hope to be making even better videos when I get my new computer. Really interesting to hear that smaller scales are something that would be good to do. I’ve seen some smaller scale videos out there but not as many as 28mm content. I shall very much bare that in mind! Thanks again for your contribution!
What size table are you planning on using for the Pelennor Fields? Its a project ive wondered about. I thought about just creating the first wall to curve between 2 table edges. As you say, even in 2mm its a significant feature.
In Strength and Honour, I’m looking at a large table (24x16 squares). I suspect it’ll fit on a 6ft x 4ft table as I’m aiming the base for Minas Tirith to be 1ft x 1ft. I’m hoping to start sketching some ideas out over the next couple of weeks so should have an update on the next livestream.
@@TsCreativeRamblings look forward to seeing the development.
My plan is to record the project so I can put it together as a video once I get my new computer!
Minas Tirith would be awesome!
I thought you might like that!! It’s going to be big but I can’t wait to get started! Thanks for your continued support and the army lists you wrote!
Who manufactures the minis you use?
Thanks for your question! WarBases make the figures. They are from their Antonine Miniatures range!
@@TsCreativeRamblings awesome thank you! I really enjoy your channel
