I love THE GREAT GABBO! I came home drunk one night at 4:00 in the morning and it was just starting on TV. I watched it and was enthralled. I soon after bought it on DVD. As you mentioned, talkies were just creeping into the scene, so the filmmakers obviously thought that inserting unrelated Vaudeville performances would boost the sound enticement for audiences.

@@kcthesledgestoryteller All of Disney's movies were based on public domain properties. Because back then, it didn't take 95 years for a work to become public domain. It only took 50 years. Well, JM Barrie gifted the rights to Peter Pan in 1929, to the Great Ormond Street Hospital, and only became public domain a few years ago. Unclear what such storytellers like Charles Perrault and the brothers Grimm had to claim any protections on the stories they told that Disney picked up, but the fact they picked them up without a mishap says that there were none at that point if they ever did.

@@kcthesledgestoryteller Id argue that it should be shorter because if they were good at keeping that brand identity, then they shouldnt have to fear the works of mickey and such going public because they'd be able to compete with them anyways. A lot of old classic disney movies are public, yet they've been so on top of keeping their versions the "relevant" ones that their brand stays around. Meanwhile something like betty boop or bugs bunny or a lot of other older works would stand to benefit from another group carrying them on, given how badly their brands are managed. A lot of them dont really even have brands anymore for the most part really. As sad as that is to say for example popeye is barely relevant to modern viewers anymore. If a brand is managed well, it should reasonably be able to withstand public domain type competition fairly easily. Most media is kinda just languishing, and a lotta times the brands that still exist arent really even the "same" as they were originally like looney tunes or hannah barberra. If Disney wants to make a live action pinnochio of that movie's quality, they should have tried to live up to their brand power instead of being out competed by del toro's movie for instance.

On Tintin, the situation also gets more complicated because there is a foundation acting as its right holder and which VERY aggressively acts against even small fans. But there is a certain document which proofs that they cannot be the true rights holders as Herge sold the rights to a third person already (who pretty much does not care.) One certain court case was won with that document but the situation stayed calm afterwards. Nobody tried to challenge them otherwise.

This "except for belgium" is wrong. In international copyright, there is the idea of the rule of the shorter term. (Basically if its free in the US and not in Belgium, you can use it in the US. If the US would have had a longer copyright term than Belgium, then, the term limit of Belgium would apply".) But in the EU, copyright terms have been harmonised by the EU and due to nobody in the US is involved in it, if you are from an EU country, the belgian term limit applies to you. Not the one from the US.

This version has the best Tiny Tim by far. In most other versions he looks too robust and healthy. He doesn't just have a problem with his leg. He is slowly dying. Anthony Walters still had his baby teeth when this was filmed so he was probably only five or six years old, which is the age Tiny Tim should be. In the Alistair Sim version and in the Reginald Owen version the actors playing Tiny Tim are eleven years old and look it. They were not tiny at all.

Don't get me wrong, I love A Christmas Carol 1984. But, since the whole cast is British and takes place in Britain by a British author, wish Scrooge was also a British actor. George C. Scott did a good job, but he's not British. Other then that, it's the best version.

I get where you’re going. Still there is a feeling like Scott sometimes teeters on a British accent. Most notably, I totally buy him as English as he rumbles “…Should be boiled in his own pudding…”.

As great as Alistair Sim was in his performance of Scrooge, George C. Scott gives an equally compelling performance in this version. Plus, his subdued/controlled/always menacing demeaner plus his sarcastic and malicious humor make his Scrooge all the more fearful. Brilliantly performed! But the reason the nod goes to this film as the G-O-A-T is the fantastic performances of each and every supporting cast character. Every one is brilliant perfection! Cratchit, his wife, their children, Tiny Tim, the Ghosts, Fezziwig, Scrooge's father, Fan, the townspeople, the homeless, Fred, his wife, and their dinner guests - all outstanding! This film is one to treasure each and every Christmas!

When I was a kid in the 70's I always looked forward to the Rankin Bass specials. "T'Was the Night Before Christmas" just kind of vanished after around the early 80's and an admin in the Facebook Rankin Bass group shared a link with me and I enjoyed it as much as I did as a kid. "The Little Drummer Boy" desperately needs some restoration work; it's a terrible transfer on Blu Ray. "Rudolph" was my favorite as a kid, but when I got older I became a big fan of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town". I think it's clever and love it. I saw "Rudolph's Shiny New Year" when it was first broadcast and remember nothing about it. And I love your outros.

My favorite version. Sim plays Scrooge as just not a mean man, but a bitter and resentful man who realizes his errors and now can't do anything about it and takes his resentment out on all people around him. HIs attitude is perfectly presented in his interaction with Cratchit in the Past sequence. He asks Cratchit if he expects "the whole day off tomorrow." Cratchit says yes, if it's convenient. Scrooge responds, "Every year you say the same thing, and every year it's just an inconvenient as the last." It is shot like a horror film and that feels right. So many good character actors, including Hermione Baddely and Patric Macnee. A Guinea, is I think, the equivalent of 1 pound, 1 shilling in the money of the time...quite a lot of cash!

Just watching this tonight, believe it or not. I saw the first broadcast in 1984. I was a sophomore in high school and it was real event, much publicized. My second favorite version after the 1951 Sim version. Edward Woodward is the best Ghost of Christmas Present...sarcastic and gives Scrooge no refuge. Warner seems an unlikely Cratchit but plays it beautifully; he seems to respect Scrooge and believe in the good person hiding in there but takes his lumps with a beaten-down yet strong attitude. Angela Pleasence is Donald's daughter, by the way, and she's my favorite Ghost of Christmas Past...snarky and condescending and I love their interactions. Just subscribed, I sense a very good channel here!

Okay, I'm psyched. Thanks for touching on so many important aspects of the story. Perhaps I've avoided this because George C. Scott looks so entirely unpleasant in the promo still. Simms, as you mentioned, has charm even when he's being nasty. But I'll definitely watch this soon with a more open mind. Thanks again. By the way, Eric Norcross has done some really fine film analyses while being a director of small budget films himself. His podcasts are fun. His "43 Degrees North" was filmed and previewed here (I have connections with Chebeague Island), and he's a warm and caring person who believes in community. I also love his way of telling stories in film. www.youtube.com/@EricNorcross

What I love about this version of A Christmas Carol is that it is a faithful adaptation of Charles Dicken's story that can be watched by young and old alike. Its not been dumbed down for a younger audience, its costumes are so wonderful (Abby Cox did a video of how much she loved the detail put into the costumes) and its a lovely moral story. Its a great movie, its certainly one of my favourite versions.

It’s a must see for me in the Christmas season. I still need my more serious version to deep dive into Marley’s pain, show Ignorance and Want, and make the future look seriously bleak. But like you said, it still hits the key themes strongly, and works as a less scary way to introduce the story to kids. And I have seen that Abby Cox video about the accuracy of Victorian apparel - very good video.

I think this version is underrated. To my knowledge, it's never mentioned in the same breath as say the Muppet Carol, or the ones with Alastair Sim & George C Scott. This version of A Christmas Carol deserves to be on blu ray after being stuck on the DVD format since the early 2000s.
