Werewolf the Apocalypse was first published in 1992 as a companion to Vampire the Masquerade. It was updated to 2nd Edition in 1994, then "Revised" in 2000. It was discontinued in 2004 along with the main World of Darkness products to be replaced by the "New" World of Darkness/Chronicles of Darkness version of Werewolf the Forsaken. Due to popular demand, it was returned in 2013 with all the ot...

Here's Book 1 in the Sol Arbiter Series by JN Chaney and Jia Shen. It's not a bad read though there are some parts that drag through a little bit and a little too much back and forth about who the bigger badasses are, Space Marines or Imperial Guard *cough* I mean Sol Arbiters and other Military branches of the Sol Federation. Outgunned is an action RPG in the same vein as my own Fast Action Hero RPG, but this game uses a unique D6 dice system to create the action and uses a characteristic similar to a Death Save from the popular rpgs, with the exception that a failed Death Save doesn't necessarily mean the character dies (but maybe disappears from the story for a little while to come back at a poignant later scene)....

    The comment about the 5% chance is interesting. It seems like that actually aligns perfectly with d20 systems that people are probably more familiar with. Rolling a 20 is a 5% chance as well. Kinda fitting for an "impossible" roll. :)

    Personally I am most familiar with Chronicles, and as a result Vigil is naturally my favourite out of the two. Buuuut I have gone back to check Old WoD games, and I admit that Reckoning 1E has its own charm in my opinion. It kinda comes off as playing "Buffy the Vampire meets They Live", and I absolutely see the appeal in this. I'd be tempted to give it a try someday. Not a fan of Reckoning 5E though. From what I gathered it really feels like they made a lesser version of Vigil and slapped the Reckoning title on it. The result is an awkward mix that doesn't have the charm of any of the two.

      I mean, that is an opinion. But the sleekness with which the games are run, the simplicity of clues, roleplaying, and opposed combat just makes it so mich sleeker in my opinion. But, to be fair, I like my hunter games to be down in the trenches without the compacts and conspiracies, so I do have a unique take on the Hunter experience. Having run campaigns with both systems now, I still stand by H5 over V2

      @@scottuhlsoh of course it is! If you like Reckoning 5E all the power to you! Didn’t mean to suggest my opinion was fact. I suppose I get your perspective, but personally the Compact and Conspiracies were one of my favorite things in Vigil. The sheer variety of factions offering to play all sorts of hunters, with or without power, along with the interesting world building, made it a rare case where I felt playing humans could actually be interesting (I usually prefer playing monsters or non humans).

    Oh man, I had no idea Chill 4th was in the works. I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for Chill. Investigative horror RPGs that aren't Call of Cthulhu are a bit thin on the ground. Really felt like Chill just never got it's day in the sun. As for the health pool mechanics, I actually prefer to reverse it. Which is to say, every horror effect ADDs to your willpower or stamina, until the players reached their maximum. So, the characters start weak, and often are easily scared or overwhelmed, but over time they would gain strength, until they're finally strong enough to confront the big baddy.

    Personally I've always liked my hunter stories to be about normal people figuring out that there's things out there way more powerful than them and the only way they can survive is by banding togethers and learning to use any ressource, skill or advantage they can find to edge a win. That's why vigil has always been more my book than reckoning. Different strokes for different folks though.

(not in detail but to let people understand/have an idea of how it works) 🤔 i see almost no negativity so far.. only stating that "the cypher system isnt your favorite but eh 🤷‍♂️" type of attitude which doesnt really mean anything negative or positive so far. 🤔 just seems like.. dnd but worded differently with that whole 1-10 difficulty+ more in the call of chtulhu type thing where you arent goinf in guns blazing like dnd but you WANT to just investigate/explore and focus on non combat unless needed to get away. 🤔

      That is correct. I do NOT feel like its the worst RPG ever made (I reserve that for some other rpgs I've come across and you can see one of my reviews if you look up the video on Outbreak: Undead). Overall, my experience playing the system is that it does a pretty decent job of letting you toy around in the Old Gods universe, which means it accomplished it's goal. Other people may have much more negative views, but I view games in this order: 1) does it do what it set out to do (let you tool around in the universe)? 2) is the system overly complicated? 3) are the explanation of the game rules clear and easy? 4) is it laid out well and without bloat? Those things are fine, so it's fine. I'm just not a super fan of the cypher system, so that's just my opinion :)

    Thank you for your review. I have been listening to the podcast since it launched, so I have been looking forward to this. I received my PDF two days ago, and while the production value is great I have never been so disappointed in a RPG before. It is bloated, full of so much of the Cyphre system and so little on the setting. I had hoped that the information on the setting was gonna be the main thing in the book, so that I could use it for any other system. A long wait for an underwhelming product. But again thank you for sharing your thoughts.

      @@scottuhls There's one aspect to the OGOA setting that may or may not have been translated properly and that's the idea that while the Green and the Dark are at war, the Dark is largely trapped behind/under the coal seams of Appalachia, which serve as a type of prison, maintained by the Green. This is the reason why the Dark is using the Industrial Robber Barons to pillage the coalfields, it's to weaken the barrier that traps the actual Dark and keeps it restrained. That's the 30kft view though, so it doesn't really come into focus unless you back up and look at the entire setting and not just individual events.

    TLDR for the series: When you let a power gamer bring homebrew drugs, -2 armour, +4 weapon and let them buy followers. They stomp everything. Longer. Fantastic setting. I started watching this to get some more insight into the H5. Really loved the story and it really let me get that insight i was looking for. Seems to me that desperation dice might need to be dialled back a bit or controlled more because when players have no fear of raising the danger constantly, a +5 dice to their rolls is nuts. Thank you for the series and the H5 education.

    Enjoying the overall story, but watching a party that only roll 6+ successes at everything is getting real boring. What's the draw without risk. Holy shirt. Hunter the Reckoning was terrible when it first came out and it's still shit now. Hunter: The Vigil on the other hand is the top Hunter choice. Best conspiracies, best mood, The majority of hunters don't have powers except for their own wits and weapons. Unless one is part of the global spinning conspiracies that each have their own unique powers. No bad fanfic tier Imburing, power bullshit. Sure you can like Reckoning but that just means that you are objectively wrong.

    • @scottuhls
      @scottuhls Рік тому

      Wow. That's a harsh take on the objective wrongness... I think you meant to say SUBJECTIVELY. Unless you mean to say that Hunter the Vigil 2 is the superioriest of superioriest games, because if so, my personal opinion is that Hunter the Vigil 1e is the better of the two versions. Now, if I were to compare Hunter the Vigil 1 vs. Hunter the Reckoning 1 or H5, Vigil 1 would win. I absolutely agree with that. But 2 is mostly just chock full of conspiracies and conspiracy powers and if you plan to run the game, you have to have the Chronicles of Darkness book to understand some aspects of the system that the Vigil 2 book gives 1 paragraph to as if you already understand what they are talking about. At least H5 is completely self contained. So, to say I'm "objectively" wrong is ITSELF objectively wrong.

    When it comes to the hexes I think it's something they imported from Forbidden Lands. I think there is a problem with Free League products the last few years, in that it's become a little bit to formulaic for me, almost like a conveyor belt kind of games. They reuse so much of their go to mechanics, and less feeling of custom game play . I think it's a result of them producing so many games. Why I like the development of Symbaroum, which is its own thing - that existed before they (Järnringen) merged with Free League. Not saying the YZ system is bad, including the other similarities between so many of their games (re-using base building, dark secret mechanic etc), but it's not for everyone. I think alot of people like the settings and the art over all, but I suspect alot of people use other systems to play these games If they don't like the rules. I like the free league work shop project (mörk borg etc), that I hope will give a more diverse range of different types of games with other types of mechanics.
