I love that fabric! Both the mock up fabric and that shimmery one are AMAZING! I think a bomber jacket would be perfect for the shimmery fabric! Do you remember where you got them?
Nice makes. I liked them all. Suggestion: thrift a big (pin) flower and attach it to your trench. Your personality can handle it. In fact, I would say it requires it. Thanks for sharing your crops.
What a fun idea! A little bit of spring for fall.
That purple sheen of your fabric is so beautiful! I'm glad you got it out of the closet and made up into a garment! Well Done!
Thank you! 😊
Wow it is lovely fabric. It made such a pretty dress. Would it work for another Trench Coat like last video or is the fabric too stretchy for that.
I think the fabric would work, just not sure i have enough of it. i could do a shorter style.
I need to practice your "I think I'll do this" style of fearless creativity. Thank you for the video.
hahaha, that's a good way to describe it. my brain is always saying 'this doesn't look right' and i'm still not quite satisfied.
Your dress is Awesome, all it needs is pockets ❤ and some jewelry ❤
Thank you so much 😊 Yes, I need jewelry!
Hi Karen. Yay for cutting into your precious fabric! Even if it is very hot, the dress turned out beautifully. I'm glad you tried the godets and then decided they didn't fit -- I was right along with you thinking the two fabrics would look good together when you held them up and then thinking not when they were sewn together. I think the bomber jacket will be wonderful, Antonia
Hi Antonia, thanks for stopping bye! I have the bomber jacket on my very long list of things to sew....
This video is so much like I sew and think about patterns and colors! I loved watching this video and it was encouraging. I have been sewing for myself for years and I still love my seam ripper; my most used sewing tool, second only to my scissors!
My seam ripper has a special place in my heart. ha! :)
Those came out so beautifully!!! We can see how much you love them too!!
Thanks so much 😊
The flannel dress and the trench coat are my favorites. 🍁
I'm making another flannel and trench with some of my stash for the fall. :)
Wow - i must be full of magic, I made Mc Gonnegals green velvet gown from the first couple of movies for a friend in early Sept for her birthday. It took 3 weeks, and in the end I had to spend 3 days hand sewing...that rayon and silk velvet just did NOT play ball. Massive job. I also made her hat to go with it! I love your brown check dress!! I love brown!
Oh, I love McGonnegal's gown, full of magic indeed. I bet it looks fabulous. You have me thinking about Halloween costumes...
@@karenfrances haaaa - yeah - advice - DONT - do this gown in this fabric unless you have a few months on your hand and a stupid amount of money! Omg - Im a seasoned award winning costumer, and even this seemingly "simple" gown bent my brain. No one had made it on YT as a tutorial, and there are nuances to sewing silk rayon velvet, in the end many seams were just simpler to hand stitch. But the back part of the gown, that is organ pleated - used 3 widths of the fabric, 1.5 metres long. I dotted the grid 1" apart, and each fold is held with 3 stitches. Its 3.6 metres, pleated down to 35 cm. And the sleeves are organ pleated too. But pattern wise - i had nothing to work with - there were not even studio screen tests off the costume - and ffinding the design lines were very hard. And i did the hat too - i love millinery. She did look the part, it was her 65th, and she wears the same type of glasses - she was the very epitome of McGOnnegal
wow! looks amazing . I really like the blouse sleeves.
Thanks so much 😊
You're a good sewer. The clothes and buttonholes look great. They remind me of 70s and 80s schoolteachers. They look very wearable. The flannel dress would definitely be too warm for our Septembers. I'm always a little confused by the academia aesthetic. Most professors aren't fashionable at all. I'm sure it depends on the major.
thanks! the flannel dress is surprisingly light, the fabric is pretty thin, not like your regular type. i was actually a little dissapointed in the quality, but I will get some wear out of it. academia covers so much ground too, like what is the difference between light and dark?
The trench coat was so nice!
thanks!
I like the buttons off center.
yay! i suppose it's unique.
Love the colors. And the ruffles on the blouse are lovely. Definitely the extra row of buttons on the skirt will make it symmetrical. I'm also wondering about some darts in the blouse to shape it to be worn untucked, maybe even a couple of narrow ties in the back! I love the styles and colors you chose.
the blouse pattern did have darts, but i'm not fond of them so I left them off. it's so hard for me to place them properly! I like the idea of ties. i also thought of putting a peplum on because i have some extra fabric. hmmm
Great pieces and great video! This is the first of yours I've seen, probably because "dark academia" is one of my fav decorating styles. Love the creativity and improvisation, no other sewing channel I've seen just goes for it like you do. I love it and I think your sewing will be a wonderful encouragement to me to just go for it, too.
Awesome! You made my day, thanks for the kind words, you've given me encouragement too.
I actually think I like the trench coat best; it's probably the gorgeous color. I also do love my coats so that might make me a bit partial. The other pieces are nice as well, especially the blouse. While I know a lot of people don't like ruffles, I do and agree that the collar is really lovely. It really is almost a statement blouse, really pretty. I hope your sons are adjusting to college well. It's probably a harder transition for you and your husband than for them. When you've had children for 18 years, it's a big adjustment when you don't see them everyday. I hope they are thriving as that will also make the transition easier for you.
I do love the trench, but the blouse was fun to make. I think wearing wise, I will definitely get more use out of the trench. It goes with so many things. The kids are doing great and we're adjusting, too.
Great job, Karen! Thank you so much for joining in with the challenge. So much fun!
Thanks Marie! It was a fun challenge.
Doreen swigart here would love to see the finished wrap pants and how you feel about them!
I never did finish those wrap pants, they just didn't fit. I may try again now that I am more experienced with upsizing patterns.
Very interesting
Very!
I just love your channel. You are just an everyday person who loves to sew like I do. I have this pattern but have been scared to try it, but it looks so cute on you, and you like the way it feels. Thank you for giving me some courage. When I find the right fabric, I am going to give it a try! I also think one side being black is a good idea...
Thanks for your comment. I actually made a black and yellow version with sleeves here: ua-cam.com/video/kGIePHEnhsQ/v-deo.html Happy Sewing!
Thank you it is simply beautiful. I would have more than one.
You are so welcome!
Velvets could make a nice sweatshirt, very easy to make!
I like that idea. I need a good sweatshirt pattern
So clever, and very flattering on you! Thank you for sharing this. I can’t help but notice your sturdy sewing table. Currently using a folding table and would love to upgrade to something that has storage like yours. If you have any info on finding something similar please let me know. Thank you!
I don't know where you are located, but I got my table at roomstogo.com. here's the storage table: www.roomstogo.com/furniture/product/country-lane-antique-white-counter-height-storage-dining-table/4326709P it's a counter height dining/bar table--one thing is that I can't use it to sew because my machine's pedal doesn't reach the floor. I also have a standard height dining table from there.
This is very helpful! Thank you for sharing the link 😊
I was impressed that the reversed fabric did not show thru! :)
me, too! because the white fabric is very light weight. :)
I love Mcalls 8284, the pink and black one. I almost bought that pattern yesterday and now I have to wait for another sale because that one is over.
I've had that pattern for a while, I"m glad I finally made it. i like it a lot, too. Luckily they have sales often.
A great collection of shirtwaist patterns! I've successfully made a few for my adult daughter. See you over in the dark academia challenge 😊
I'm working on dark academia right now! it's so fun. I love a good challenge.
I love the look of a straight shirtdress, but my pear shaped hips require an a-line or gathered skirt. You shared so many lovely patterns. I probably have 4 or 5 patterns shirtdress patterns myself. It is such a classic style that I don't think it will ever go out of fashion. It's sad that a lot of people won't make a shirtdress because they have an aversion to buttonholes. I guess if your machine is finicky you might not enjoy the process. I am clearly blessed because I have never owned a machine that didn't make decent buttonholes, which is a really good thing when you love shirts and dresses as much as I do! Your dress is going to be beautiful. I'm sorry it didn't fit. I've had some fitting misses lately myself. I probably should just stick with Burda because they seem to fit me better. I just bought Burda 6520 a few weeks ago, but I think I may have to adjust it to be button front all the way down, because i am not fond of side zippers. I hope your next dress fits you better!
I find I like a fuller skirt too, because that area is hard for me to fit. Buttonholes are easy if you have a good machine, although I have to research how to sew a button on without it falling off. Now I know what shirt dress patterns i have, so if I want to make another one, I can watch this video...:) I am trying to get in shape so hopefully that dress will fit me eventually! Take care.
FYI: I am currently wearing a shirtdress (Mccalls 7925) and instead of buttons and buttonholes, I found an old package of pearl snaps that had been intended for a western style shirt about 20 years ago. I made my shirtdress with snaps and I love it (BTW I have the pliers for attaching snaps that belonged to my mother)
I had to look up that pattern, it's very pretty. I like the snap idea, too--i bet it gives the dress a bit of a flare. good idea.
I love the last dress. That fabric is beautiful and the pattern is so pretty with the ruffles and flounce. Where did you get the fabric?
I bought it at Fabricmart online, but unfortunately they don't have it anymore. It is really pretty.
@@karenfrances Thank you for responding.
Christmasdress with Black sequens top and skirt of Black and red stripes 😉
Several people have suggested a sequin Christmas dress, I think it is time to plan. Thanks~
I do like all the cotton fabrics, do not sew with polyester because I don't like it ever. I have purchased from Mood, and they do have nice fabrics. Happy to see you are enjoying the mystery box. You can make a fbulous cocktail dress for Christmas party from the gorgeous black sequins fabric.
Polyester is so hot in the summer. I like the idea of a cocktail dress for xmas and I have plenty of time to plan. Thanks for the suggestion.
I checked our only pattern retailer in this part of our state...ALL sold out on this pattern, which looks great. Thanks for bringing this pattern, for REAL Women, to light. You did a great job on making the dress and it looks very good on you.
You are so welcome! And thank you for your kind comments.
Something about the tie doesn’t seem attractive or flattering but other than that I like it.
good point! I wonder if ribbon would be better.
I bought that pattern when it first came out! I still have it and never sewed it yet, had trouble understanding the instructions if i remember correctly. But maybe i can get a better idea of how it goes together now and i may actually be able to get it done...😊 thanks for showing it and talking about it.
Thanks for your comment. It's a fun pattern, i hope you try it. I plan to make it again. i wonder how it would work in wool...
Hello from France 🥰 i buy a lot of mystery boxes for the same reason and here in Europe there are lots of stores that propose some. I bought one from mood because i use a lot of their free patterns and wanted to thank them for that. So i went on the store but when there are too many choices i never know what to chose... I don't Care that the yardage is small because i'm small and skinny and i have children so i Always find something to do with my fabrics even the smallest ones. Bye ❤
Hello! Its nice to meet someone that shares my interest in mystery boxes. There are so many opportunities with scrap fabrics, including patchworks. Thanks for your comment!
Thank you so much for sharing. I can never remember how-to tips and tricks. I think the The Sewing Book and/or First Time Sewing would be really helpful for me to look for.🙂
You are so welcome!
You're adorable. You cracked me up..yikes. I mean bye lmao..I'm still laughing early this Monday morning
Glad you enjoyed! Sometimes i get confused and don't edit out silly things ...
Bravo!
Really enjoy your journey…you are inspiring me to move forward…God bless!
You can do it! bless!
So cute!
You're so clever!
thanks!
Thank you Karen for such wonderful alterations! I have a couple of shirts from . . .um the 80s .. that I really love the fabric. Now I think I can do some resizing and actually wear them again. Thank you again.
Wonderful! I'm glad it helped
Dayam, it’s nice to hear someone has the same problem I do. I pick fabrics for a project at the quilt store or online, and, just like you, don’t like how they look together.
Yea, especially buying online is tough
