Seasonal Bonsai Series August 2024 American Bonsai Association Sacramento
American Bonsai Association Sacramento presents another episode in the continuing Seasonal Bonsai Series. Late summer is a good time to evaluate your deciduous trees and make decisions regarding styling and growth. After summer growth trees should be evaluated for proper growth, some of which needs control and management. Late summer and early fall is a good time to style and wire some conifers. From very young trees through more advanced and refined trees, every bonsai tree can be improved by proper care. This video series demonstrates starter trees, intermediate trees and refined trees and gives proper steps for each. Bonsai trees grow rapidly in our warm climate and care must be taken to manage this vigor. Late summer work includes management of grafts, pruning and wiring. I feel like the Emperor has no clothes but I know those cuts need to be made in order to eventually get the tree right. It would be good to know how long you have owned the trees or sharing some history. The growth on your maples is amazing compared to what I get in SF. Thank you both for making these videos!!!

I have read entire bonsai books and not learned what i picked up from this video. I think Peter Tea is America's most talented bonsai growers. I guess the number of trees he developed (regardless of ownership) that won awards at the PBE speaks for itself. Thinking inside and outside the box. Thank you for giving the presentation and for ABAS for hosting and posting

excellent demonstration. the only thing i can add is that reducing distal foliage on the root stock or host plant encourages the tree to put the energy in the scion. reducing distal foliage is more important in apically dominant trees. try to make the graft apical in reference to the branch. grafting deciduous trees is a little harder, thank you

Great vid love the discussion on deadwood on real trees . Not bonsai thanks for the tips on deadwood . I’m a fan of bonsai that reflect real trees and the forces of nature against the trees quest for life .For me to many masterpieces bonsai do not work as a artistic composition .for my eye . A dynamic twisted juniper trunk covered in deadwood bleached by the sun and tortured by the elements . Growing out of a surface of sedate green moss with a perfect layered canary depicting a pine tree growing calm meadow is to much conflict Contrived by man

Hi Michael. Thanks for posting this video. I believe (in my experience) glazed pots and plastic pots tend to retain moisture in the soil, leading to soggy root systems. Unglazed terra cotta seems to breath more freely, so the roots get a chance to dry out in between watering cycles. Perhaps the extra evaporation also keeps the root mass cooler, avoiding heat stress on hot summer days. In Maryland we have extreme swings in temperature and rainfall - I am motivated to follow the demands of nature.
