Been struggling with the fact that this anxious depressive fit may actually be burnout. This is the first real resource I've found that lays out steps to recovery. My therapist just said "self care, do what you want to do instead of what you feel you need to do" which isn't necessarily wrong but I felt like I wanted a little bit more presence and granular guidance in the moment.

I feel like you have been peaking in my windows 😂 This is an excellent synopsis! As soon as I start to dig myself out I begin to start working flat-out again, a vicious cycle. The insomnia is worse, currently 2 days without sleep, withdrawal from other people / social relationships less immediate family etc. When I am with them I am irritable and exhausted. It’s like a compulsion because I do love working and I have 2 gears 10 or 0. These seem like practical solutions albeit difficult for workaholics to admit and make change’s without a valiant effort.

This is so well presented and clear to understand. It is easy to tell you have put a lot of thought into this and speak from personal experience. It is also very helpful for the many people who have reached this stage, and for those who have cared for a loved one for many years, and that loved one then passes away. A video would be invaluable to those of us who now have ME/CFS as a result of burnout, as physically they cannot do all that is suggested here. Thank you so much for this. ❤️

I've been hovering around stage 5 burnout since my husband passed away in 2018. I was burned out after caring for my husband for 14 years. I honestly don't think I've ever recovered from that. I had three jobs that I leapt into full blast, and burned out from each. I do need help. What can I do? My psychiatrist only has 15 minute sessions, and they just lost their last therapist. One of the biggest groups in this area - and they have zero adult therapists, and two child therapists. My burn out narrative is: I'm broke and I can't even afford a movie ticket.

I can definitely empathize with the challenges that arise in dealing with being burned out. The idea is to start to take action, any action, which can enable your body and brain to start to rest and recover. Unless you alleviate the stress, you won't be able to recover from burnout and it may get worse. While taking time off is a really good idea (even if it's a full weekend off, or 1 personal day), you can also start off with things that can reduce stress, like 1) deep breathing exercises after waking up and before going to bed 2) stretching/yoga 3) going for a walk at lunchtime or after work 4) spending time socializing with other people 5) watching standup comedy or singing loud to music in your shower or car Start with 1 action there and commit to it for a week. Then add another and one more, and then maintain them and eventually when your stress is reduced some, start working on the mental narratives side. I also put together this self-paced recovery guide to help people who are struggling on their own: www.gabekwakyi.com/the-musing-mind-infographics/burnout-recovery-tips-part-1
