He does wash it and wax it when possible due to living in the rust belt. No visible rust anywhere on the car. He also has a 1957 Plymouth which he has had since the late 60s. That car has at least 350k on it and also has minimal problems and only one spot of rust.

    I have 275,000 miles on a 1999 Lexus RX300. Besides wearables the only thing it’s needed is timing belt and I pushed that to almost 200K like an idiot and it started to slip but didn’t not seize the engine and O2 sensors, that’s it. Timing chain (once) along with the water pump (they both get changed together) and two O2 sensors. 275,000 for a Lexus is just getting broken in. At my Lexus dealer they said my car has lower miles than many of the 98-01s, many they see gave over 500K.

    I'm a car guy, so doing maintenance is a no brainer. So while there are some lemons out there, just the act of doing maintenance reasonably by the book makes all the difference in the world. Second, is knowing the weaknesses in your car. I had a Dodge Shadow with the Mitsu V6, which started burning oil around 85k(pretty typical). Kept oil in it, didn't overfill, and it hit 200k before I gave it to my brother who didn't and it was dead in a year. Had a PT Cruiser GT which went from 80k to 170k where the only issues were an intake gasket, a rear suspension component, and CV joints. Neither of those vehicles are famous for their reliability, but simple maintenance made them cheap to own and use. Now I have an '06 Mustang GT and a 22 Jeep Wrangler. The Mustang needed rear axle shafts, everything else has been maintenance for 60k miles. I've used semi and full synthetic, though I honestly think most would be fine with normal oil unless they've constantly got their foot in it. Jeep's needed nothing, so far. Keep the oil clean and the chassis lubed, and research your vehicle to find out what things tend to go bad and save money to fix them. Just do that, and your 90% there.

    The 5k mile oil change interval isn't really because of the oil breaking down (synthetic won't break down very much in 5k miles), it's more so do with 1) oil getting diluted with water and fuel over time (hence it's not just every 5k miles but every 6 months, whichever comes first, because short trips are especially bad for diluting the oil) and 2) the fact that not all oil drains every time you do an oil change, so long oil change intervals means you're always going to have a little bit of 20k mile oil in your engine which some engines (e.g. Toyotas) are going to be much more sensitive to (sludge, oil control rings going out and causing oil burning, etc.) Second, I think that for most cars an 80k trans fluid change (drain and refill) is pushing it and I would stick to 30-40k mile intervals tops. Third, I'd like to add that if you want to take your car to 500k miles without major repairs you should warm up properly on cold starts (idling for a bit first...longer in colder weather...and then driving very gently until everything is fully warmed up is important for both engine and transmission longevity). Lastly, not driving the car aggressively in general is a good rule of thumb to keep wear & tear lower.

    Start with a reliable, simple engine, like a gm 3.8. Then, run full synthetic oil, change it at no more than 5000 miles, check religiously and keep at the proper level, and don't overheat it. If your manual says oil change interval is 8000, do it at 5000. If your cars computer says oil life is 50% and you have 5000 miles on it, change it.

    • @quentagonthornton49
      @quentagonthornton49 9 днів тому

      Even an engine not widely recognized as simple and reliable can still have a very long service life as long as the oil is changed at a reasonable interval (5k +/- 2k for mostly highway or mostly city) and only full synthetic is used (preferably of the highest recommended hot viscosity for the engine). Oil level shouldn't be a problem with reasonable change intervals as if the engine does consume such a significant amount of oil to consider topping it off in just 5000 miles, you have bigger problems. You should still check the oil often though to catch any severe problems early (fuel, water, metal/bearing material, etc.). Oil life as determined by the car's computer is just a way for dealerships to get away with changing oil less often while still under warranty.

    • @averyalexander2303
      @averyalexander2303 12 днів тому

      It doesn't seem like you understand why we need to change the oil in the first place. In most cases, the oil needs to be changed because it becomes contaminated with carbon, soot, fuel, moisture, dust, etc before the oil itself breaks down. The best oil in the world doesn't do you much good if it's contaminated. While in many ways modern engines are easier on their oil than old engines, they are also harder on oil in other ways. Direct injection contributes to fuel dilution and soot formation, higher cylinder pressures create more blow by into the oil, low tension piston rings are more susceptible to sticking, thinner oils and more heavily loaded parts leave less of a safety margin for subpar or contaminated oil, today's traffic is harder on engines and oils than yesteryear, etc.

    • @jamfoxs
      @jamfoxs 12 днів тому

      Not really. I think in many ways that depends on the car you own. Modern cars are turbo charged and direct injected. Doesnt help many of them use thinner oil like 0W-20 some newer Toyota models even go for as low as 0W-08. Oil changes are cheap, engines are not. I’d rather have the peace of mind changing my oil every 3k or push it to 5k if its a top quality oil like Amsoil signature series or pennzoil ultra platinum.

    • @ericwolfe8119

      Nobody mentioned that it depends quite a bit on how the vehicle is being driven. My vehicle is used for delivery, and I let the engine idle several hours per day. No mileage on the odometer for that. Beats stopping and starting the engine 200 times a day, tho. I drive 1k miles per week in stop and go city traffic; quite a bit different than highway commuting 50 miles a week. Proper maintenance has to be tied to driving pattern as well as, or more than simply an odometer reading. I change mine once a month, ever 4k or less. An oil change costs 1,000x less than a new car and 200x less than a new engine. I spend 30x as much on gasoline.

    • @quentagonthornton49
      @quentagonthornton49 9 днів тому

      Yeah, every 3k only applies if most of your miles are in the city/short trips, or your if you spend excessive time idling. 5k is good for most people though, and if most of your miles are on the highway, then 7k is perfectly reasonable.

    • @quentagonthornton49

      @@jamfoxs Just because the manufacturer "recommends" an insanely thin oil for a piston engine doesn't mean you're legally required to use it. Look at the viscosity recommendations for the same engine in non-US markets, especially somewhere with high temperatures, like Australia. The engines that 0W-8 is recommended for will be better protected with 0W-20 or 0W-30. And no, the manufacturer does not adjust the bearing clearances tighter for 0W-8, and usage of such thin oil will result in accelerated wear.

      Not everyone drives an "average" amount. People who live in rural areas, drive a lot for work, travel frequently, etc can easily put way more than average mileage on their vehicle. Also, it's not uncommon for old vehicles to have high mileage. I have a 1997 Civic with over 357K miles and a 1990 Legend from rural Mississippi with well over 400K (TMU, odometer tampered with). I also know a general contractor who put over 500K miles on his Chevy van in ~15 years, I think he's over 600K now. While it sounds logical, all the data I have been able to find for the last several decades shows a pretty consistent 12-15K miles per year. Perhaps the increase in remote work and online shopping offset possibly offset having to drive longer distances to work? I have seen on several reports that an average of around 30% of total miles are from commuting to and from work. At 14K miles per year and 260 work days in a year, that would mean an average of just under 9 miles each way. For what it's worth, most of the people I know live within a few miles from their job regardless of whether they live in the city, a nearby suburb, or a small semi rural town.

    You didn’t really show how you did a lot of the actions like taking off the , primed the pump or anything you just kinda went to it.

      @@Tshirtguy2020 yep I realized it afterwards. It’s as simple as filling the reservoir w/ fluid and turning the steering wheel from full left lock, and refilling and turning full right lock. Start the car and turn the wheel, shut off and top us as needed. Good to go

    I must note, if the oxygen sensor does not fix this code you will either need to try a O2 sensor defouler, or to replace the catalytic converter. Either option may help turn this code off

    Where did you buy the bracket/housing for the liftgate button to sit in? Can you give me a link or part number?

    • @AmpdEngineering
      @AmpdEngineering 4 місяці тому

      The part has to come from Toyota, but it is not included in their parts diagram. Luckily I was able to use the clips still so I didn’t have to replace the mount for the tailgate switch

    Can you tell me what size extensions for the O2 sensor on a 2001 toyota avalon??

    • @AmpdEngineering
      @AmpdEngineering 5 місяців тому

      You mostly want to use a wrench for these. The size I believe is 7/8 but I found it easier to use an adjustable wrench
