I was looking for videos on “how to think and infer from data available”. Thank you and please do make more such at beginner and intermediate level.
No ! Why not ruff the HJ straightaway ? THEN. play trumps .
Hi Eli. I’m trying to improve & progress in bridge. In the last hand ,I didnt get how 1 heart limit~raised to 3 diamonds shows heart support. Is that a convention?
Yes! This is a convention called Bergen. It is a nice tool to show 4 card support in your partners major. There are lots of different major suit structures available. As always, having a firm agreement with your partner is the most important thing. Good luck on your journey!!
Boadr 9. Partner has 5+ clubs. We know he has at most 1 spade and 4 hearts unless East bid 1S on KQTx, which is highly unlikely. So we know partner has 8+ minor suit cards. If he has 2-4-4-4 shape, he opens 1D, therefore he must have at least 5 clubs. With that in mind, 3C is probably best unless you want to try do double 2S. I don't like the double of 2S because the opponents could easily have a double fit and be cold Even so, I'd rather double 2S than pass. NOTE: I have not seen the actions taken by Eli yet.
LOL. Partner ran. In this case, probably for the best. Again, I have not seen more thus far. Now I see the North hand and have no idea why he pulled the double. Maybe this si s stupid robot idea. Bidding NT and doubling here should be penalty even if your general style is for doubles in competition to be takeout.
nice analysis! funny that partner pulled with stiff K of spades and defense in the reds
Counting losers only applies when declarer has trump control and is planning to eventually draw trumps. The loser count has to be kept in mind, but declarer's main count is winners. This is especially true when playing for a scramble.
The more I play..the more I agree with you. Counting winners and losers is probably the best approach if you can manage your energy well. For beginners, counting losers and planning how to get rid of them seems an easier approach at first imo.
@@EliJolleyBridge In your example, declarer has a plethora of winners, so counting losers works well.
Very sweet concept!
This looks like some sort of backgammon variant but with cards!
Why are you not playing a Heart at trick 2 instead of misguessing Diamonds, which can wait....!?
Why 3D and not just 2D ? And why have opponents not come in with Hearts - unlikely . And if the response was 2D I could rebid 2S and probably play there. Not impressed.
I have also uploaded videos on games at IntoBridge. Here is a sample. Check Board 6, for example. A pretty interesting 6Nt contract where a beautiful squeeze develops. One has be careful though as to which defender is to be squeezed.. ua-cam.com/video/felOwkLHoA4/v-deo.html
This was a fun one. I'll try it out.
thank you
If the following is true, does it help to start by thinking this is probably the distribution & then adjusting as more information becomes available? When the opponents have an even number of cards in a suit (e.g. 6), a 4-2 split is more likely than 3-3 and much more likely than 5-1 or 6-0 When the opponents have an odd number of cards in a suit (e.g. 5), a 3-2 split is more likely than 4-1 or 5-0 Also, usually the first play is often fourth highest from longest suit, which presumably help to work out the complete distribution from the suit led?
Absolutely. You are thinking the right way. If for instance we are in a 5-3 fit and need to draw trumps I am going to assume a 3-2 break unless I have enough information to think otherwise.
Finding it hard to make a plan to begin with so just hearing about how better players think might help me...eventually!
What about a negative x? Pard and I use it like everyone else, but also for just this class of hand: forcing to 3 nt or 4 of a minor but no idea where it's going. If responder doesn't raise spades, he doesn't promise four. Opener's alternatives aren't great. Obviously he'd bid nt with a heart stop. Two spades would show a minimum with four, which isn't far from the truth. I think I'd rebid 3 clubs over x. Responder bids 3 hearts over whatever opener rebids, showing half a stop and more than a bare minimum because responder would have bid nt with a full stop and opener would bid nt with a full stop. The nebulous negative x with a strong hand is big enough to save us from any indiscretion opener may commit. The cuebid tells opener that responder has the big hand with no clear direction. If opener has a bigger hand with half a stop, then west bids 3 hearts, showing half a stop, for the same reasons above. The key is to avoid using up so much bidding space. The auction had already been obstructed once, with the 2 hearts preempt. You want to have a bias towards lower bids so as to recuperate some of the lost bidding space, in particular when your hand is hard to describe. X is the lowest bid possible, it tells your pard you have values to compete. Opener won't be going crazy in spades after neg x unless opps have a massive heart fit. And if that happens, you've got a really useful hand opposite 4=0=4=5. You might have a slam. This one's really hard, because opener doesn't have a great hand. Sometimes you have to pay off to the preempt.
awesome comment. thank you for your analysis! I will share this comment with my p. Without discussion I wouldn't use the neg x, but I see the benefits.
@@EliJolleyBridge We stole the idea from Mike Lawrence's book on overcalls. Highly recommend.
Hi there handsome!
Promo_SM ✨
That’s very nice of you, Eli. All I did was pass 😂
Nice informative video with examples. Hope to see more videos. Thanks Eli.
Thanks for the video. I don't know about others, but the BBO sounds annoy me.
yes, I will have to adjust that. I can't hear them on my end.
Just to mention two more intermediate sort of lessons: 1. Just highlighting that cwoffee underled the HA to get that ruff 2. Knocking out the opponent's ace (the CA here) often is important, and on this board, exerts maximum pressure.
Thanks for sharing the good one and not the bad ones!!!
Hi young Eli, working my way through your videos. Still working at coming up to speed in Contract Bridge. I enjoy the mental challenge but also need to develop appropriate skills to apply to my game. A late starter it is true but so far so good. Thanks for your thoughtful video. It is helping me to adopt a logical and sequential approach to trump and no trump games. In the heat of going through boards at my bridge club during the week in competition with a time limit of 6 minutes some quick and purposeful thinking and techniques are definitely required for a good outcome!
Be dogmatic in getting your basic technique down Robert. If you do this you are bound to grow, and most importantly growing in the right direction!
Thanks Eli, I will apply your precounting idea to my play. I have been playing for about 6 months and I'm still sometimes losing track of my trump count. So I'll apply your system and see how I go.
Start by applying it to trumps. Once that is second nature-add a suit. Happy Bridge, Eli
@@EliJolleyBridge yeah, slowly slowly catchie monkey!
Is there any indication that East is more likely to have 2 hearts and 4 diamonds rather than West here? Or is that a holding we can't pick up anyway, so we shouldn't worry about it?
it doesn't matter! interestingly i could always ruff the second heart high and still make the contract by finessing. if diamonds are 4-0 the other way it is simpler i think because they are marked with spade length and can't overuff the dummy.
I like the new logo. Looks sharp.
really great i love watching your videos and how you explain cool and simple things just one thing: you need to work on your audio the sound is too low and i don't know how you edit your videos but i recommend filmora - very easy to learn from youtube how to use it but you will need a good computer for that. you can also improve your sound in the setting: press right click on sound --- pick "sounds" --- click "recording" --- double click on your main microphone --- levels --- it should be at 75-85% i'm sure it will improve your videos :)
really appreciate the feedback!
Nice hand. How soon after did you realize you could have made it? Did they make it at the other table?
they only bid 2 and made 3. I realized it right after the round. I played my lefty to be 3244 and should have considered that my right could have led the club from the 10xx. if i think in those terms I could have seen the squeeze for sure...
@@EliJolleyBridge it would have been really hard for you to guess it right if they stiffed their CK. An easy club pitch would seem like they started with 3-2-4-4
@@wolpertbridge makes me feel better, but yeah, after the 10 of clubs that would have been my assumption.
I hate finding these plays at the bar. :D
Well played
Very cool hand. Would have been sweet to see it at the table.
Morton's Fork situations arise quite frequently I've noticed.
Nice hand, you had a great round. Hope day two goes well too.
Nice play. A bit surprised by the bot's low club lead trick two. As you note, bots don't often lead away from strength.
Very instructive hand Eli. Planning the play at trick 1 and timing transportation along with counting. Thanks for the video.
I make it roughly 11% a 9-1 shot not too likely but when it does come through you are certain to rake in almost all if not all the matchpoints.
Mind doing a math breakdown for me and others? It felt like a 10% chance to me.
@@EliJolleyBridge Sure. Diamonds 4-3 62% Club king onside 50% Multiply the two you get 31% The trump suit is a little more tricky. King onside 50% 3-2 break 68% These combine to get 34% Multiply by 31% you get 10.5 % I added a smidge more because a club loser might be avoided on some of the 4-1 trump breaks. Did you get a cold top?
@@paulsontag9233 a few others did the same. 90% of the matchpoints.
Cool hand, nice read. I think you did a good job of explaining your logic. The sound was good on this one.
I was expecting East to have a hand he wanted to defend spades which is why he chose to not bid over 1S but then come in over 1N.
That is a good thought... At the time I don't think I registered how odd the 2c call was, and later caught up in my thought process when the heart layout became known.
FYI the sound on all of these hand of the day videos is extremely quiet - have to turn volume to 100% on my laptop to be able to listen. (Compare with an older video ua-cam.com/video/udvY4A8xTRw/v-deo.html where it's comfortable at ~40% like other UA-cam videos). Nice hands though :) Definitely a tough hand at MP. I don't think an initial 3N seems right - after all, if the clubs aren't running, we could easily lose 4 spade tricks on top, and if they are, we're making 6N.. I probably would have started with 3H too, though that tends to give up on slam entirely since if partner raises them we're never going to find out if the clubs run.. not sure if there is any good answer!
Thanks so much for the feedback. On my end the volume is fine, but i have heard this from someone else so there must be something i am missing. doesn't hurt to louder or adjust settings...
Nice play. Really enjoying this series. As a note, maybe you want to start dating these instead of numbering them. Might make it easier to not accidentally repeat.
nice hand
Thanks for the video. You talked about how much you dislike the double, but you didn't talk about what would be a better bid instead. I think it would have been useful to go over the pros and cons of all your available choices. Double isn't a great bid, but are any of your other options that much better?
Great Feedback. Yeah, i'm not sure. I think that 5H or pass are fine. I felt at the time I had misrepresented my hand so my partner wasn't poised to make a good decision. My partner seemed likely to pass 4S unless they were saving...It turns out 5H by me would have been the winner.
@@EliJolleyBridge I agree that the mistake was 4H, not the double. While it's close between 5H and double, I think both are clearly better than pass here. Partner doesn't have the right info to make a good decision, as you said.
Thank you for this video. Counting losers was always a point of confusion for me. This video was excellent!
on 5, would it be an issue to pull trump, then bang down AK of diamonds? Why is playing toward the diamond important?
Honestly, I was having a hard time figuring it out and only when i led toward the AK again did the solution hit me. When I am in doubt I follow general principles. In this instance you are 100% right. AK of diamonds works great and is more efficient. In retrospect, I think I was thinking of a different theme than a simple elimination.
@@EliJolleyBridge that's very relatable. Often playing these hands I do one thing at a time and don't understand how it's going to work out until it does.
Sorry, Sound seem too quite on my phone..not an app issue or my phone !
hmm, I am listening to it on youtube and the sound seems great. Do you mind trying again on your computer?
Good to see you back! Nice pass on board 7. West's 3H with that hand is completely insane.
yeah, looking back it is truly ridiculous. i don't know if i have ever seen the robots do something that bad...
I just started learning bridge and I would like to thank you so much for this great video. This helps a lot. I look forward to watching the rest of the series.
At 4:12 you mention high-low to show an even number and low-high to show an odd number. Please explain or provide a reference. Even/odd number of what? High-low...what does that mean? (I'm a beginner)
Hi michelle, There is an agreement you can have with your partner while defending to give partner "Count". This means telling your partner if you started with an odd number of cards in the suit or an even number. Hopefully partner can deduce how many based on other factors in the hand. If we play high-low we can show an even number, low-high and odd number. There is more to this, but most of all what is required is partnership agreement if you employ this!
Thank you! Finally a bridge video that addresses the overwhelmed feeling of beginners !
