I truly agree with your comments and with your criticism. I think they choose not to dive into much of this political context is that Brazilians in general know this chapter of our history well… and another point is that our country is so political divided that we even had supporters to military intervention not long ago (like 1y or so - maybe less) ~ which sounds completely absurd when you are aware of the history and you know what it may drive us to. But again, great video. I’m glad you were able to see a bit of our history and art!

2014 was the year the brazilian government finally took some sort of accountability by investigating all claims of human rights violations of the dictatorship in an effort called the Truth Comission. It was this very Comission that unveilled what happened to Rubens Paiva. So really the time jump is no coincidence, I'm Still Here probably wouldn't exist if it weren't for that

Here in Latin America, we have the impression that the people of the United States do not even know what is happening inside their own country. They are manipulated by the mainstream media, just as it happens here. The coup and military dictatorship shown in these films was a project of the United States in the 1960s and 1970s throughout Latin America. Democratically elected governments were overthrown with the help of traitors from the mainstream media and the military forces. The people were manipulated and frightened by the "communist threat", as they do to this day. The military dictatorships supported by the United States tortured, killed and consumed the bodies of patriots who did not accept dictatorships aligned with the United States that promoted the end of democracy in Latin America. Here in Brazil, where I live, we had a military coup sponsored by the United States in 1964 and in 2016 we had another coup, but this time in a different style. The United States is using another way to carry out coups: “color revolutions,” where they use the mainstream media to manipulate the people and turn them against the government. In 1964, the coup was carried out to defend the interests of multinationals that used all of our resources and then sent the profits abroad, without investing anything here. In 1916, the coup was carried out to continue the process of privatizing our companies and thus handing them over to international capital. Coups in Ukraine in 2014, attempted coups in Venezuela and Turkey, in Syria, Kazakhstan, Ecuador... And they continue.

The historical context envolves USA with condor operation who finances far right dictartorship in latin america during cold War. Brazil for exemple had never a communist cell, but any progressist or sindical reunion had seen like a "menace". 21 years. A lot of military corrupction, a lot of torture, a lot of deaths

And Central Station was nominated for Best Foreign film but La Vita é Bella won. We derserve to have our History, culture recognized BT the whole World. i don’t see lack of historical context in the movie, honestly. it’s not hard to feel the military oppression from the very start; the television news bring up the freedom fighters/domestic terrorists kidnapping foreign diplomats in exchange for political prisoners. i’d say even for an usamerican viewer, it shouldn’t be hard to grasp how things go with the “communist” accusations in the 70s, right? i’m sure many details may fly over foreigners’ but the brunt of it felt quite understandable to me through context clues

Walter Salles is a highly renowned director here in Brazil, incredibly talented and knowledgeable on international cinema and the history of cinema. I would highly recommend you to check out more of his work (Central Station is a must!). I understand what you're feeling about not understanding the military dictatorship, it's truly a vast topic that had incredibly deep implications in almost everything, especially art like music (check out Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso which were named in the movie) and cinema (check out the documentary Twenty Years Later - Eduardo Coutinho and The Day That Lasted 21 Years - Camilo Tavares if you want a more "wikipedia" take of events). Not being brazilian and getting all the small contexts and historical references is tough, I felt the same way about Parasite and loved that movie and it bridged a lot of gaps of my understanding of South Korean culture, anyways we're always learning! all the best loved to hear your thoughts :)

The fragility of freedom is so fragile, that we could be seeing it start to disappear for us in the USA. That was one thing that struck me while watching the film. Eunice has a moment where she comments about due process and how could this be happening. I think the red alert for those in the USA - is that this could easily happen here now. The constitution only matters if the higher ups want to respect it. Your civil rights only matter, if those in power yield to them. It's clear as day that the orange fascist is willing to do anything. The sequel to this film could be made on events coming up very soon, and that is the part that stuck with me most as I left the cinema - emotionally devastated from this beautiful film. I thought for a minute that the kids had to be a real family because that's how authentic and real their portrayals were on screen. Some of the best acting all around in a film I've seen in a very long time. May Oscar voters give this Best Non-English Language picture. It is far far far superior from the flawed Emilia Perez - but that is a different matter entirely.

About the lack of historical context: this movie was not made to be watched by Americans. The Oscar run was a blip on the radar for this movie: it was made-just as the book it is based on-for a Brazilian audience, who already knows the context. That said, the way in which the ins and outs of the military dictatorship are left unspoken adds-in my opinion-to the kafkaesque nature of the situation: we are kept in the dark much as the detainees were kept.

Here's the historical context you need: The 1964 coup d'état that destroyed Brazil's free democracy and installed a gruesome military dictatorship was, in fact, US-backed. The entire dictatorship period was supported by the USA. US diplomacy constantly informed the USA government about the mass killings of civilians, and the US government did nothing about it. Why? Well, the USA was (and is) never interested in the lives of people from other countries. The USA is only interested in keeping it's dominance to exploit other nations.

The way the story of this movie is told is very skewed by the very selective memory of the Leftists of the time. While they claim they were defending democracy, many of them were being financed and trained in militias by the Soviets and Castro (very well-known for being paladins of liberty and democracy, right?). As a matter of fact, many of the politicians of the time had to be exiled for that very fact, being sympathizers of communism and all that, like a very important politician called Leonel Brizola, who got funds from Castro himself to train militias in Brazil and overthrow the government (to install a “democracy”, of course).

i think the context of the time jumps and the way they were made in the movie convey the feeling that the families going through this kind of tragedy must’ve felt - why did it take so long? the military had so much power in politics (and still do) that some decisions concerning the military dictatorship took way too long to be made. also, it wasn’t just far left groups that were targeted by the military. any “strange gathering” or “suspicious activity” by a group of people that looked a little more different could easily have been stopped violently like the car Vera was in.

At first, I love your review. The story is set against the backdrop of the military dictatorship. During this period, anyone who took any action against the regime was subject to death, imprisonment, torture, and exile. That’s it! For those who have never lived in a country outside a democratic regime, it may be a bit incomprehensible. The director managed to tell this story in a sensitive way, portraying a family brutally affected by the most cruel aspect of an authoritarian regime-making a loved one disappear without even the right to bury their body. And he did it beautifully.

It's a drama story, ultra-realistic, the film's politics are subliminal, we Brazilians understand every detail of this film, for you foreigners it would be necessary to interact more in our context to understand the subtle political messages that are present throughout the film. The film is based on what is most sacred to all of us, family. And it tells an intimate story, of a past that is not dystopian, but recent, and that still haunts the world. In the end, the film is not only a warning, but also a powerful weapon, as it teaches us that humanity and resilience are the best weapons against fascism. Masterpiece!
