Wow, Franky! What a beauty place to fish. 11:05 was a killer shot. Thanks for taking me some place warm. We got some snow this morning, lol.
Man, I wish I was there too! Been raining cold here in MO for the past three days. This fishery is pretty remote and a full commit to stay on island. But very worth it. The Striper populations are always at risk. So for all my Canadian friends if you visit, treat the fish well and please C&R.
Wowiiiiii bro I wish I were there with you fishing😮😮❤
What an adventure! Next stop Mexico. Will I have the same luck?
Thanks for sharing your experience. What color combination do you like in that fly? So many options.
There are a lot of combos! I just ordered the materials and there were four or five like colors. I like the burnt orange, root beer blend. Anything in that range seems to match the color of the crustaceans locally.
Frank you always seem to take us along for the best adventures. Your attitude toward the fish, the local area and the outdoors in general is so refreshing! Keep going my man, love watching your videos!!!
My man, thank you. I love these places. I want to share them with the folks I care about. I’m lucky to have close friends in so many amazing destinations. Glad I got a good fish on this trip!
Great fathers! You guys were in my little playground in the mountains and drove right past my favorite brookie fishery!! 😄🤐
@@dawnfirephotography how bout it! Hope to visit it next time. Follow on instagram. I’ll be back in April!
If you ever come to Missouri I know some great area for some giant catfish
Big cat fish in the fly? No way!
@ I wish but I use cut shad😅
Hey Franky, that's a blast. Looked like a ton of fun fighting in those gish. They're huge!
Thanks DC! I was stoked to have a day on the water with my buddy Marc. And to fight a bunch of blue meanies was cool. I also figured out how to get my fly in the zone. More to come on the next episode with the fly rod!
nice
Thanks for TUNING in!
@ 19:30 what was that floating in the water during your blue fish fight ?
Lobstah trap!
First ! New content nice ! I had no luck fishing on the fly on my trip to the Island on Sept , a couple on the surf rod. My kid participated in the kids derby caught one but small. She will fish next year too 11 years old. That made the trip! Can you send me your buddy’s info. May use him next year. Thanks
That’s super cool! What a proud moment. I’ve got more videos with Striper coming out soon! Marc doesn’t guide but he’s tagged on my instagram story. He’s a great friend and really knows the island. He’s been generous with sharing his insights.
Great video! Question. Ill be fishing on the Vineyard in a couple of weeks, for the annual Derby. I'm an experienced fly fisher from Georgia, but for trout in our freshwater streams, and have little experience with the salt. I do have a very nice 9-wt TFO Axiom-IIX 9' rod paired with a quality TFO NTR reel, and this is a fine combo for bluefish, albies, and bonito .....no stripers in the Derby this year....but the reel is loaded with intermediate sinking line. My question is, if I'm fishing streamers with this rod from the shore for albies, blues, and bonito....should i fish the sinking line or should i spool that reel with a good 9-wt floating line? Thanks!
Ideally you’d have both with you. Thats your official thumbs up to buy new gear lol. If I had to choose I would go with the intermediate line. Getting down faster in the surf will catch more fish - unless they are busting on top and you’re throwing top water stuff. You can always give Kismet Outfitters or Coop’s a call and see what they recommend for fly choice and go from there. I throw an intermediate line with a micro streamer (dumbbell eyes) for Striper in the summer.
What size rod were you using? I have an 8wt rod that is pretty good for bigger streamers. Could I use that?
10 and 12 wt’s. Chippewa River Customs makes a great musky rod at a reasonable price. While you can fight a musky on an 8wt, throwing these flies all day would prove exhausting on an 8wt. That said, if you downsize the flies - throw more smallmouth sized minnow patterns, you may be fine. Remember the bite wire in your leader setup!
Take your time, don’t be a duckhead!

Headed to MV for the derby ? I will be on island end of the month , can’t wait. !
I wish I was!! I’m heading to Louisiana in a month or so for red fish for a friend’s birthday. Catch me up!
I feel like a lot of energy is wasted throwing big streamers for smallies, you can catch them just as well on woolly buggers
@@thomasharrison72 all about confidence flies I think. I love the Murdich Minnow for example. Small profile. Huge bites!!
With that hook set the fish is now in New jersey! I'm J/k setting the hook on small fish is so much more difficult I think we've all had one in the woods 😂

Where do you recommend getting musky fly?
Nick is one of the tiers for Musky Fool. His stuff I believe comes up on special release cycles. Their selection in stock and on their website is really good. If you need something specific call the shop and talk to Dan. www.muskyfool.com Tell them you watched the film!
Man it’s crazy how in just a short time since this I feel like we’re better anglers based on some of the things we say. The learning comes quickly in fishing!
We’re all just out here trying to figure it out. One of the best reasons to put out a film is to get feedback and differing opinions. We can learn on the water and off the water that way.
Sorry, man, lost me with the Solunar Mythos worship.
I get it. What’s been your experience with musky movement?
@@fishhandsfranky I don't primarily chase musky and all my catches were not intentional, so I have no functional knowledge of the fish itself other than, "One was here." With all the weather and water conditions, environmental pressures, seasonal behaviors, and then accounting for things like available depth of water, speed of flowage, turnover present or not, barometric pressure, UV penetration, etc, I've learned that in every fish and game species in WI I've observed years of behaviors of, if affected by the lunar cycle at all, is affected less by it than what appears to be almost any other given factor I can consider. There is zero doubt in my mind that someone following a Solunar table can still catch impressive fish and/or hit a limit on a regular basis. I just think the tidal pull of the moon is far closer to a non factor when comparing it to everything else. Especially so in a body of water where the rise/fall will be less than 1/8" at a peak. Maybe it really does make a difference for coastal fishing quite noticeably (or at least drives certain species shallower), and for musky? I wouldn't know for sure, but I find it really odd that every single one I've caught so far was when I was fishing in 20'+ of water off a steep drop in the fall (which has gotten me called a liar for more than once). But I typically only hear of and see people trolling random flats of a lake or throwing floats as long as my forearm in a foot of water to chase them, so I'm not confident as to the why for those things. Either way, I came here to learn, and I did find value in listening to you talk. Sorry for coming across as condescending, dismissive, and whiny with my initial comment.

Hahaha. Exactly: A cairn is a human-made pile (or stack) of stones raised for a purpose, usually as a marker or as a burial mound. The word cairn comes from the Scottish Gaelic: càrn [ˈkʰaːrˠn̪ˠ] (plural càirn [ˈkʰaːrˠɲ]).[1]
