Colganology
United Kingdom
Приєднався 9 сер 2006
A magazine channel by Stevyn Colgan - writer, artist, folklorist, former Museum of Curiosity and QI 'Elf', proud Cornishman and member of the Eccentric Club of Great Britain (est. 1781). You can expect arts projects, weird creations, wanderings through the British countryside, folk culture and quite a lot of country lore and foraging thrown in. Oh, and occsional interruptions from Harris the Pug. There's nothing nasty here. Let's make the internet nice - and a little bit silly - again.
Miscellaneous Meander #62
Another week of walks on the Chiltern Hills with me and Harris the Pug.
This week we go in search of wild flowers, pay homage to a wonderful - but tragic - art project, and ponder on the lyrics that might have been ... if Poison knew their plant anatomy and pysiognomy.
(Yes, I got it wrong in the video and said that it was Guns'n'Roses, dammit.)
As always, more content on my blog here: colganology2.blogspot.com/

Well ... I did promise you a bigger and better 'Screaming Engine' ... Huge thanks to Tracey Huxley for donating the C-PAP pipes, Liz Bell for the conduit and other plastic waste, my long-suffering wife and neighbours for being so understanding, and to the Grange Area Trust who maintain the meadows and woodland trails (Widmer Fields) where I film these silly videos. It's a long-ish video that co...

Two meanders today. The first finds me at the posh end of Oxford Street in London on a visit to the Oriental Club for a meal and a meeting. I'm on the committee of the Eccentric Club which, for nearly 250 years, has been a convivial society of innovative and creative thinkers who do things their own way ... and raise money for charitable causes. Past members include poets, architects, theatre d...

If you enjoyed all of my previous noise-making creations - such as the Hornyx, the Eye-Lo-Phone, the Horn of Geddon and the Didgeridoin't - then you'd better start girding your loins for my latest, biggest and silliest project so far. Coming very soon ...
Weighing the Mayor
Переглядів 611День тому
Today - the third Saturday in May - was Mayor Weighing Day in the nearby Buckinghamshire town of High Wycombe. Every year, the incoming Mayor and outgoing Mayor are publicly weighed to see if they have 'got fat at the public's expense'. This is the only town in the UK that observes this curious tradition. No one is quite sure how it all started. Some say that it goes back to the 1600s and was a...

Another week of dog walks on the Chiltern Hills with me, Harris the Pug and guest dog Alfie the Dachshund. Not a massive amount of new things to report - spring is starting to slowly morph into summer, the bluebells are giving way to foxgloves, buttercups and cow parsley and the early brimstone and peacock butterflies are being joined by whites, red admirals, small meadow blues and orange tips....

Well, this was a treat. In fact, it was a double treat! My podcasting colleague Paul Waters and I hosted a live WE'D LIKE A WORD event this week. Our guest was poet, author, musician, artist, comedian and national treasure JOHN HEGLEY, ably accomanied by poet and musician Clare Elstow. The podcast will be available to download and listen to very soon. It was a fantastic evening. The venue was p...
A Different Kind of Bird Scarer
Переглядів 6 тис.21 день тому
Yes! I'm back making hideous noises in the name of some kind of art. Today I'm turning a hard hat into a bird scarer for farmers (or for people who think birds are dicks). Enjoy. (No birds were harmed - or scared - in the making of this video.) Check out more of my 'musical' instruments here: The Horn of Geddon: ua-cam.com/video/GJk2JvHTcz4/v-deo.html The Didgeridon't: ua-cam.com/video/NzWjCkgG...

This episode features the return of Alfie the Dachshund. It also features me sitting for a photoshoot with acclaimed fashion photographer Andrew Edgecumbe. Eh? I am to fashion what lobsters are to poetry. But Andrew insisted. It turns out that he's photographing creative people for a personal project. So that's okay then. The late afternoon shoot took place near a lake belonging to a country ho...

Viewer discretion advised - This episode has a couple of dead animals in it. Nature is cruel sometimes. Sorry. Another week of walks on the Chiltern Hills with me and Harris the Pug. Expect red kites and tractors, wild garlic buds and wild cherries, bluebells that aren't blue and the surprising return of 'What's that Leaf?' Also featuring a video clip by Paul Dinning - check out the whole video...

Welcome to a week of interesting things that includes Morris Dancing, folk costumes, and meeting one of my heroes - the artist ROGER DEAN. It all began at dawn on May Day when I utterly failed to record the Whitchurch Morris team dancing in the summer. I then spent the evening at a Beltane celebration with a local pagan group of witches, shamans and astrologers. They're a lovely crowd - a lot l...

Some more rubbish art. Literally. Last year I had an offer to put some work on display at The Watermen's Gallery, which is on the quayside in Falmouth, Cornwall (do check out owner Sophi's amazing landscape paintings - see link below). So, with it being a harbour town, I went for a sea theme and made two seahorses. Oh, and then I was ispired to make a blue(tooth) whale. I made some phoney owls ...

This episode is cheesy. That's because I make home-made cream cheese flavoured with wild garlic and using just yoghurt and a bit of salt. It's very tasty. There's also the usual dog walking and foraging shenanigans and an unexpected (and probably unwanted) romantic interlude involving consenting adult beetles. More content, as always, on my blog here: colganology2.blogspot.com/ Instagram, Faceb...
For how odd and full of sound it is, I actually find it quite pleasant to listen to
I love the design and concept, but personally i would have put the eyes above the cheekbone/jaw.
Just what I needed for a long, boring morning shift.
The noise looks like something straight out of a horror movie or a war
God, I feel like those noises should be in like, Evangelion or something.
you fool, the more demons you create the more they want to take over the world
I believe "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" was by Poison. I can see how the 'Rose' in Axl Rose/ Guns n Roses could be confusing to the matter
You're right, dammit. Not my taste in music I'm afraid. But dammit anyway! 😫
❤
When I’m old I aim to be like this. Honestly the creativity and dedication is amazing and admirable! :)
This man literally made a carnyx.
I watched this in thumbnail and HAD to come here just for the UpVote! In these concerning times please keep up the lovely silliness.
Great job. I have to say your neighbors must love you. Keep crafting
I love your instruments and art! Great work!
such a terrifying sound to come out of such a whimsically goofy creature. if i just heard the sound without seeing anything, i'd be saying my hail marys! lol excellent work! you've certainly earned yourself a new subscriber :D

monster design credit where monster design credit is due, the thumbnail made me think this would be some analog or surreal horror thing
i love how you made an exact recreation of a monster on a medieval manuscript :)
It looks like some sort of thing that you would expect a eldritch horror to have on hand to summon minions of a horrific maddening nature. Well done!
Looks like Covid
Now THAT is cool
I was looking at the name of your channel and it confused me at first as to what it meant. So I put “Colganology” into an etymology website and found a definition for “organology” which, fittingly, is the study of musical instruments. I then realized that it was a pun with your name, Colgan lol. Such a nerdy and eccentric joke! Well played sir!
0o0 Awesome my dude. If there is a Med evil war going on, we will need you to Strike fear into our foes who are unworthy to be Brave in Battle!!! :D
Rawr
"I do these things to myself, but the end result will be worth it... I hope" is the sentence that defines hobby handcraft artists my man
Just found your videos and I really like them!!! They inspire me a lot to make stuff for fun and try and get over perfectionism! Your creations are so funky looking!!! Keep being groovy!!
that was cool
YAY!!!!!
Wow! Your effort paid off, I think this was the grandest and most absurd "instrument" yet. There was something hilarious about seeing you standing in the woods with that on your head making that racket 😂😂😂
Oh my god the eyes😂
We need a digeree aint
made me so happy to see someone else making creatures out of cardboard 😭 none of my friends do it lol
Coolest one yet
Sweet lord in heaven above if Im talking a stroll and I hear this ungodly war call I’m high tailing it to my house and grabbing my spear shield and iron helm because I’m fairly certain that something got out of the secret government labs
Things like this make me remember that, in general, I like humans
My home page has not disappointed me today.

If you get this I love you
THORNS!
outstanding title and thumbnail. love your style and humor off the rip keep it up!
Biblically accurate trumpets
This is amazing
I once did this with all the pipes on my pipe organ. Talk about a wall of sound. I have pictures somewhere.
Oh dear. I sense yet another project in my future. I also sense that much of that project will be accompanied by the music of Bellowhead. Thanks for sharing this fantastic idea, and for a new band to listen to.
This is the best channel on UA-cam. My year has been made
This is wonderful. When I make my space creature costume I will be back here to study how to make that WOOOOONG noise.
whats wild is that ive heard and made synths that sound a lot like that! a very neat bassy noise, gives the kind of vibe like impact bass sort of
There is something very “How to Train Your Dragon” about the Bellowhead, from the design to the sound to even the name. I utterly adore it.
