Finding Home with Jan Peppler, PhD
Приєднався 15 лис 2013
When Covid19 struck in 2020, I found myself alone in Italy for four months, three in Sicily. A bit to my surprise, I not only enjoyed the island, I truly felt at home there. Fast forward a few years and ... I now own a historic train stop house which needs some renovations. Then, I hope, I will live there full-time.
In the meantime, I am renovating a 50-year old home in Idaho, where I returned after five years in Tulsa. Both locations support my research on the psychology of home and how we connect to people and places. From Idaho to Sicily, and everywhere in between, I hope you'll join me on my journey.

Renovating Idaho Home - 5 Months later
Переглядів 17710 місяців тому
After 5 months, the interior of the house is basically done. Here's how we raised the floors, installed LVP flooring, painted and more. It's been slow but worth it. Now, on February 10, while installing the last of the flooring, we ran out! LOL
All Souls Day in Sicily @findinghomejanpeppler
Переглядів 219Рік тому
Honored to be in Balestrate, Sicily for All Souls' Day. Families open mausoleums, bring flowers, and sit with their deceased relatives. It's a beautiful and comforting tradition. Note at the end is a traditional funeral procession, with family and friends following their deceased loved one into the cemetery. The beach with the LOVE sign is directly on the other side of the cemetery. A nice beac...
Renovating an old Idaho home, week 4
Переглядів 371Рік тому
It’s been 4 weeks since we started the renovation on our 1970’s Idaho home, and nothing has gone according to plan. (Of course, right?) Four weeks since we unpacked the UHaul. Four weeks since we picked up the flooring for the house and tiles for the bathroom. Four weeks of cleaning and scrubbing and painting and unpacking and bouncing around between places to sleep. Four weeks without heat. Fo...
Renovating an Old Home in Idaho before moving to Sicily
Переглядів 664Рік тому
Before I can move to Sicily full-time, I decided to move back to Idaho and renovate a home from the 1970’s. It’s been a rental for 20 years and is quite a mess. I figure this is good practice for the work I need to do at our Castelvetrano home. Honestly, the work we have to do in Idaho may actually be worse! 2nd Look at My Sicily Home (renovating an old train stop house)
Переглядів 5 тис.Рік тому
Finally! A return to our Castelvetrano old train stop house and the first time Tom has seen it since we decided to buy. (He couldn’t make it last September when I got the keys.) In just 12 short days, we cleared the house of ghosts, decommissioned a bathroom and turned it into a laundry room, painted the master bedroom (again), pruned trees, visited a thrift store for furniture, and lots more! ...
Geckos in My Sicily House - but is that a bad thing?
Переглядів 553Рік тому
Viewers of my first video commented quite a bit on my mentioning the geckos inside the house when I first arrived. Thank you to everyone who was nice and supportive! I wasn't clear, however, about how many geckos we actually had inside the house: A LOT. Not one or two or three. There was a community! Seriously. So here's a closer look at the good and the bad, some laughter, and a few peeks at m...
First look at my Sicily home
Переглядів 55 тис.2 роки тому
The old train stop house. My first trip to our Sicily home after the six months it took to finalize the purchase. Not quite in the condition we expected. But in other ways, it was even better.
Brilliant to see you are back in Scicily .... Are you back on the renovations? Would be lovely if you resume your vlogs Jan. 😊
Thank you, Mary. That is so nice to hear. I’m working on another Sicily renovation vlog! We were just there 3 weeks. Never enough time!!
Thank you for your kind comment!
Thank you! Very insightfully done!
Thank you, Joanne, I appreciate your kind comment and I’m so glad you enjoyed the film.
Beautifful, serene, captivating. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks so much for this visit to the cemetery. It felt more a village of souls' and a wonderful warm place to remember those whose lives that are gone and contemplate our life as we live it presently.
Thank YOU for watching and commenting. I'm glad you felt that. I did as well. It was peaceful, serene, and yet, not somber. I was truly amazed by the vast number of mausoleums that were open and the people who were simply sitting inside and out. I tried to be respectful and not get too close, not to invade their privacy, and yet also wanted to honor the memory and presence of their loved ones. It was a beautiful experience which I hope to repeat in future years in other local cemeteries.
You will get there!
Thank you! Yes, bit by bit! And it will be great!!
Ha! You made me walk down the memory lane - i did some sort of U-haul with my then to be GF - starting in Chicago with a "rental" U-haul trailer -- the first one did give in after 50km with a broken axle -- the second one made it into downtown St.Louis but then decided to quit the job with a burned out brake system -- and i mean it - red glowing hot brake drums. I was angry beyond belief --- but on the other side of the street, near the gas station/dinner we ended up with the whole shebang, was a "honest Joe" used Car Dealers shop -- so i went over and told the guy sitting behind his desk my story. He did laugh his ass of.... he, himself had no U-haul trailer in stock - but he grabbed his phone - made some calls -- and - one of his colleagues did sell us an almost brand new twin axle U-haul trailer for a reasonable price - no more more rentals. It was a long trip -- Chicago to Tucson AZ -- then back to Chicago -- en route to Buffalo NY -- and then the trailer named "June" made it "with the help of a friendly" cargo ship to Germany -- and is still with us - lol - good luck for your big projects -- Greets from Germany - H.
Oh my goodness Harry! That is quite a story! And what an adventure! Well I guess as they say, it could always be worse! And what happened to you is certainly a worse situation! Thanks for watching, for your good wishes, and for quite a story! Best to you in Germany!
You mean your Sicilian home and not Sicily...
You're correct and as a former English teacher, my use of a noun instead of an adjective makes me a bit nuts. BUT it was deliberate. Sicily tracks better. People search for Sicily, not Sicilian. Alas. :/
I have watched all four of your videos. your italian home is so romantic everything attracts me.everything talks
Thank you so much!!! I’ll be back in Sicily at the beginning of November, so look for another video soon!
Keep the lizards cause they eat any bugs that could come into the house. Only after you renovate it and start living there, they will go, as no food will be there anymore. For now, they keep your house free of insects.
Admire both of you. Almost down to the bone. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! It is indeed! A lot more work than either of us was expecting. 😆
@@findinghomejanpeppler renovating is always an open ended process it seems .
You Like to demolish bathrooms !!🤣😂😂
hahhahah!! I just like a CLEAN bathroom!! (come on, who wants to shower under the stairs?) oh! Just realized I forgot to show what the shower was like before they ripped out the liner! oh well, another video!
@@findinghomejanpeppler Love it !!
This is excellent training for Sicily~great progress!
I think so too! Thanks, Julia!
Sorry: The olives called Castelvetrano an almost crunchy, bright green, are my favorite!
Mine too!! I was so excited to buy organic Castelvetrano olives from Costco that come from a neighbor of ours!! Asaro ❤️
Wow@@findinghomejanpeppler that is wonderful. Have you found sources for thrift or recycled furniture yet? What is your PhD subject? Whatever subjects you want to discuss like even the neighbor olive source and research on flushes out resources for furnishings, etc. Is worthy of UA-cam posts from your current home base. If your olive growing neighbor can provide videos of their harvest and production for posting on your blog, great stuff subject matter. Same with the bakery owned by the Rizzo family for three generations.
More fun info: Check out the image known as The Trinacria (on the Sician flag) as an artistic addition. The Medusa's head pottery or planter , the colorful ceramic pine trees, the colorful pottery heads called The Moorish Heads, a decorative wooden, painted Sicilian Cart, find old Majolucas' pieces of tile, find a great bakery for bread and a Cafe for delicious cassata and cannolo. Some plants to consider lemon trees for your landscaping. I'll take a break for bit.
I love the ceramic pine cones!! Am waiting to purchase them when the house is more finished. Have also heard that traditionally they should be given to you rather than purchased but...I plan on purchasing a few, just want to be deliberate in where they are placed. The Trinacria.... honestly, it's unappealing to me. And the Moorish heads - do you know that history? oh my goodness, it's an awful story about betrayal - I defintely don't want any of those around. But there are so many extraordinary ceramics in Sicily, I know I will incorporate them into the house. Almost bought a large plate in February and then was convinced there will plenty of time for purchasing decorations - first we need to do a lot more work! lol. And yes, we do hope to plant some lemon trees!! (I use lemons every single day so at least 2 trees seems like a necessity!)
I use dried Bay leaves (purchased in bulk). They are great bug deterrents. I live the deep South, USA. we get lots of geckos, palmetto bugs, spiders etc. I tossed the Bay leaves in every closet, cabinets, on every shelf any inside windowsill, pipe openings under sinks/laundry room, around the covered entry with great results. Outside I use food grade pure diatomaceous earth as needed for the red ants. I have pets and feed the wild birds including hummingbirds so no poisonous ingredients and even for gecko' sake. If you make a water fountain outside, it will mask unwelcome street or neighbor noises. I highly recommend you make at least one where you can relax and enjoy the sound of the trickling water. My sister will smudge entire house without asking if given an opportunity. I don't know if you are religious, but you might check your local church for a house blessing and blessed Holy Water and candles to keep and use throughout. Im so happy for you. Lots of luck.
I didn't know that bay leaves are a bug deterrent - that's great! Thanks for the tip. Also love the water fountain idea. Tom said that as well, so we'll figure out some sort of water feature eventually. First we need to make a patio and pergola. I'm not religious - Im an omnist more than anything - everything is sacred. So yes, it is important to me to bless the house and property, to live in harmony with nature and animals. Intention, I believe, is the root of all such rituals like house blessings and I blend many traditions. I am looking forward to living in Italy because ritual is an essential fiber of the culture. I think what's important is to find the rituals that speak to you personally, the ones that resonate on a personal level. Thanks so much for your comments!
@@findinghomejanpeppler Please elaborate and another great subject for your vlog.i think your personal input and tastes and touches are the strongest attraction to your vlog. Nothing preachy but sharing with others opens the mind.
Hi! My opinion is, I would not want geckos in my house. I get upset if there is a fly in the house. So I have no pity on any rodent or insect. Love your videos. Best wishes on everything. Janice from Arkansas USA
Thanks, Janice! I appreciate your support on this! :)
Have you seen *Leave Everything and wander* on UA-cam? The couple just bought a thousand year old home in Sicily and they are renovating. They have similar tile floors in the kitchen. You may enjoy watching. Nice seeing your house again, looking forward to more. Ciao!
Yes! I started watching them back when they were looking and before they had their baby! Theirs is the kind of place I was originally looking for but in the end realized that I don't like connected walls to other people b/c I don't like other people's noise! lol
I hear you! @@findinghomejanpeppler

When will u be back I just subscribed and I can't wait to see more
hey thanks so much for watching and subscribing! I'll be back for a quick trip in November but hope to post more before then!
Well at least it makes for a good video I don't believe things like that supposed to clean the house of ghosts like I said it does make good good video
Well like I said, it couldn’t hurt! Thanks for watching!
New sub , yes you have to fix lots of things in old houses , is not easy but final effort will be beautiful. Greetings from Australia 🎈
Hi and thank you!
Just joined your subscription. New to Awakening this year. Get every energy, a scrambling experience and for tips, knowledge from others. Love watching European home do up vlogs, this had a bonus. Thank you. Did you use drinking alcohol or kerosine? xo from Whakatane, New Zealand
Hi Lisa! Thanks for watching, your comment and your question! We used denatured alcohol (ethanol). If you do a cleansing, let me know what happens!
love your house... an idea for your train ticket............buy a small frame at a thrift store there or back home and get 1 piece of scrapbooking paper in a print and color or colors that you love to put behind the ticket or if you want to see both sided buy 2 same size glass and skip the background paper, then you can take it off the wall to show friends the back stamp too!!!!!! sorry i am so wordy haha yup talk a lot ............... cindy 😃
That’s a terrific idea!! Thanks!
Yay! So happy you are back in your home in Sicily. I love seeing what you are doing to the old train station. It definitely is a labor of love and I can feel it through your videos. Keep up the great work! Ciao!
Thanks so much!!!
Beautiful house, love the big yard and everything, the chandelier ❤, the old doors, they used to build houses to last for centuries, the stone walls. Loooooove it love it love it
Thank you! Yes, I love those doors too! Thanks for watching and commenting!
YES!!!!! I've been waiting patiently for this!! I'm so glad to see you back and going at it! Hugs to you for the loss of your pup...that's so hard, especially not being there.😢 It's really looking good and I'm happy to see your progress so far! I look forward to your return and seeing more! Thanks for taking us along with you! Ciao for now. 😊
Thanks so much for watching and for your kind words. I hope to do another video with extra footage before I go back so stay tuned!
So nice to see you and the progress!! Cheers!
Thank you, Eleanor! I really appreciate your support. 😊
Great to see you back at the house, you must be itching to get things going.👍
Thanks you - and yes!! Get things going and move there!!
whoa, welcome back to UA-cam! Loved seeing the work, it's coming along! The drill is the beginning of expert mode. You got this!
Thanks so much! Yes, the drill - lol! baby steps!! :)
Welcome back, wondered where you got to. Love geckos, have one tattooed on my arm. Live in Sicily too, near Catania.
oh! I love that you have a gecko on your arm! Sounds like your totem / power animal!! Are you from Sicily or did you move there?
Maybe use your phone to translate conversations/instructions...
are you referring to the workers and my conversations with them? I'll keep that in mind moving forward. Thanks for watching!
And thanks for the cleansing tips!!
Wow! I'm so glad you're back! I've been thinking about you and wondered about an update. Yay! Blessings from Texas! :)
Thank you Violet!!
Would it be possible to paint the stone floors? I've seen there's a paint for tiles and I'd imagine there was something for the floor.
Yes, I was thinking about that as well. I've seen that in other videos. I think that's what I'll do in the closet (I didn't show that on this video). Maybe, if I can be convinced it will work in a wet environment, I might do it in the bathroom. Don't think I want to do it in the bedroom though. But ... maybe!
I've seen salt sprinkled into corners of rooms to protect ... when living in Italy, I used to go to a woman (in Florence) who would give me dried bay leaves for "le bruciature" ... (she'd had a huge sack of leaves blessed by the neighborhood priest!.) Personally I'm very fond of smudging and, God knows, sage is such a part of Italian life!
The titled floor in the bedroom looks great. it just need some cleaning. Please hang in there! Thank you for sharing.
I tried cleaning it! I used a cleaner recommended at the hardware / paint store. It did absolutely nothing. My Sicilian friend, Nino, who owns Le Luminarie in Balestrate, has the same red & black tiles in his bathroom that I have in mine and he had a professional come out to clean them. No difference. :/ Disappointing. So, we'll see. There are a number of other things to do first!
Thank you for watching! and for commenting!!
It was so good to see you back at your new home. Sorry for about your dog and I send Enzo my best wishes.
Thank you! On all counts, thanks for your kind thoughts.
Just seen your UA-cam video tonight...luvvvv it and the house is stunning...looking forward to seeing the restoration...I just love your gardens...enjoy your new home...luv from ireland
Thank you!!!
Geckos are good luck. but they do poop on your floor. the ones with the round toes are indeed Geckos You need my little grandsons. they'd take care of the lizards in short order. It's a shame you don't have the really cute ones that are all over Hawaii now, the bright green with red spots ones, Hahaha Good luck
😆
So nice to see you again!! It is exciting to see some of the renovation in progress and certainly, the little geckos will relocate to the garden once they realize there is a new owner :) Looking forward to the next videos! From the few images we saw of the house, it is starting to look quite wonderful!
Hi Eleonore! Oh, this video really has nothing new but I will make a new one soon (fingers crossed) that shows how we decommissioned a bathroom and turned it into a laundry room when we were last there. And we did a little more painting upstairs. What I really need is an architect that can help us with two bathrooms. That just stumps me. And Tom thinks it needs to be a local person. We did buy a refrigerator since we've been there and that... well just wait til you see the photos... too funny. SO much to do. I'll be writing about it on my Substack before videos though. Big changes here before we can finish over there. Hope all is well with you!
I was WONDERING where you were!!!
hahaha! I'm here! Well, still in Tulsa at the moment but there's a big move coming (which prepares me for the move to Italy). I'll probably post video on that too. Thanks for keeping me in mind. Hope all is well with you!
Get rid of them, it's your house, they can live outside in the nature
@@mariarobles9116 thank you!!! I agree
the only thing annoying about the geckos is the gecko shit. i have cats that keep all sorts of creatures out of the house. too bad you're allergic to cat hair
it IS a bummer! Cats are pretty cool. Thanks for watching!
If you want to get rid of small "critters", i.e., mice and lizards, get a cat. I would be more concerned about scorpions than the harmless lizards
I have lived in states in the U.S. with lizards...you just learn to live with them.
You look so happy I'm happy for you and how's this beautiful what grounds are beautiful why are you crying 😂
Are you going to hire a landscaper or you doing it yourself? How much did the 🏠 cost
It's a pretty house I can tell you like yellow you got a yellow house and yellow bedroom too
I would have wanted to see the master bedroom more 🙂
Well the two bedrooms are really mirror images of each other - I just chose one to be the master, lol. I'll show more in upcoming videos. Thanks so much for watching!
That's nice furniture it came with the house?
Yes! Which made us very happy. However, most of it is in very bad condition. We'll have to see if we can salvage the stuff that is falling apart.
Geico's are kind of cute they look like tiny dinosaurs 🦖
They DO!!!! I call them little alligators!
Get used to it Geico's or there to stay
