We are Kristin and Dean Anderson and we like to ride bikes and do other stuff too.
Slowly “Racing” the 2024 Lost Elephant Bikepack Race
I raced the 2024 Lost Elephant Bikepack Race on my singlespeed and wondered if I was too old for this stuff. The course was ridiculously hard with its 480km length and 10,485m of elevation gain and there was little chance of this 51-year-old finishing at the front of the pack. I ponder in this video the reasons for doing these events when finishing at the front of the pack is not expected.
Thanks to the organizers for putting on a great event and stitching together an amazingly difficult course! The BBQ and race itself were something I’ll never forget! Cranbrook has a wonderfully supportive and welcoming bikepack community.

The Victoria Trail is the oldest road in operation in Alberta. Kristin and I went on an overnight bikepacking trip from Gibbons, Alberta along the Victoria Trail to Metis Crossing. The area is rich in history and has many markers describing the settlements and historic events that happened along this route. It was a wonderful experience glamping in the skywatch domes and having wonderful meals ...
Why ride 470km ALONE in the Canadian winter!?

I took 3 days to ride 470km the Icefields Parkway out and back from Jasper to Lake Louise and back to Jasper to examine why it’s beneficial for our mental health to ride solo. All that time alone resulted in some deep thoughts!

There is a complete list of everything I brought including clothing, food, and gear. If you want to know how to ride 200km in the winter, this video should be able to help with some strategies on how to do that. I show how the ride progresses and th...
Winter Bikepacking in Canada in December!
Переглядів 8 тис.Рік тому
In December 2022 a group of us went on an overnight bikepacking trip to Elk Island National Park in Alberta, Canada. We experienced freezing temperatures, long hikes through knee deep snow, and cold headwinds in the dark. Winter should not be a time you spend only indoors. Get out and enjoy it! With the proper preparation, you can have a great time experiencing Canada in the wintertime!
How tall are you, if I may ask? I see that is medium size Unit.
@michaljambor7772 I'm about 5'8" and I have short legs. I almost got the small since I have a small 2012 Unit, but Kona changed the geometry so the standover height for the med Unit X was about the same. I was happily surprised that it worked out! The med Unit X has a bit more frame bag room.
chapeau
@@teachemwell4961 thank you!
Good for you! That looks like a brutal ride!
@@PiquePictures thank you! It was a challenging one, that's for sure!
Really like seeing these videos. Get a much better idea at how brutal these types of events are. Congrats on finishing!
Thank you so much! These things are tough and also so rewarding!
My cheap inner bar ends brother! Very impressive ride
Thanks! Cheap inner bar ends for the win! 😆
I really enjoyed riding the Dumbo this year. Was super challenging but super rewarding. So many great people to ride and chat with along the way. At almost 61 I was thrilled I could make it to the finish and see my RP dot bouncing 🏁
I totally agree! It was a wonderful ride! Congrats on your finish!!
Love this so much Dean. You're such a Bikepacking hero. Still can't really wrap my mind around doing that route with 1 gear. Bonkers!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching! One gear is easy. You never have to think about what gear to change into and get to take your bike for a walk a lot more often! Haha!!
Great video and the narrative at the end was beautifully said. I'm mid 40s and about to tackle the Colorado Trail Race in a few weeks. Am I gonna win? LOL, equal chance Jumbo-Visma signs me for the 2025 Tour de France... But I'm gonna do my best, and I'm gonna "race" in the same way you did on this one. Inspiring!
Thanks so much! All the best in Colorado! You will crush it! That's one of my favorite courses so far! So beautiful!!
Dean, you are awesome! It was so nice to bump into you briefly on night 2! Thank you so much for making a video. What a course. What a ride. ❤
Thanks! What a pleasure to meet you on that dusty road in the dark!
You knocked it out of the park! Thanks for filming, gave me the chance to show my wife what the route looked like
Thanks! It's hard to communicate how hard some of these adventures are (especially thins one), but pictures and video help sometimes! Thanks for watching!
Dean ❤ you’re not that old… sorry my friend 😊 like you said enjoy the nature, enjoy life on two wheels…
Haha! That's true! Age is relative. Even though I'm getting older, there are those older than me crushing these events. Inspiring!!
At 65 and recently moved to cycling as my knee will not withstand the rigors of ultra running , your commentary of you, and the route surrounded by like minded people , is bang on! Be well , enjoy many more miles of events !
You are an inspiration! Well done continuing to stay active and adapting as required! Getting out with others makes these events wonderful!
Well done! What a feeling of accomplishment you must have! 😎🚲🤟🏽
Thanks! It felt great crossing that finish line!
I blew through a brand new brake pad on my rear and was thinking I might swap the front and back pads. It's always great seeing you at these events. I fully enjoy them, even though I rarely, if ever, have a chance at a podium. I love the community, the course, and the satisfaction of completing a route at an assertive pace.
It's always great to see you too Darren! Agreed that these events are wonderful places to ride tough courses and experience the community of bikepacking!
All that heat and the climbing and you still found the energy to film your experience! Great video.
Thanks!! I had to make an effort to drag the camera sometimes. Glad I did though!
Looks like a trip I would like. How many km and where did you start from
We rode from Gibbons. It was about 90km one way. Here's the route we took: ridewithgps.com/routes/46599773
looks like it was a great trip!
@@joyceaulenback5029 it was wonderful!!
Very nice video guys
Thanks Majo!!
Amazing work. great film. inspiring in every way.
Thanks so much!!
Great video! I just watched this while on my indoor trainer, preparing for CTR 2024! Congrats on completeing it, and SS too is hardcore!
Thanks! I hope prep goes well! You will have an amazing time!!🤙
Can I ask your age and gearing? Feel free to tell me to bite sand :)
Wow! On a single speed. You are a beast!
Haha! Thanks!
congrats on the triple crown!
Thanks! So fulfilling to get it done!
Congrats dad
Solorrific
Very cool
Thank you!
Epic ride as usual. That is a classic stretch of the Canadian Rockies with the distinctive stratifications. I guess those commercial soup mixes do have a lot of salt in them. Most, but not all, of my rides are solo and I have an ongoing conversation with myself for the whole trip. That's for sharing your journey, and for sharing your philosophical approach and wisdom.
Thanks! It's a beautiful road that's great to have those internal conversations.
Huge accomplishment and terrific shots here Dean. As someone that primarily rides solo, this really resonated with me. Love it.
Thanks Mike! Hopefully someday we can ride solo together! Haha!
Great video, and message Dean ! Such an amazing feet of strength in an outstanding location!
Thanks Bob! It's such a beautiful route!
Nice video and great footage! We want to return here, but not in the winter. Hopefully sooner than later. Pax Christi
Thanks! The area is amazing in summer and winter!
@@andersonsoutside Indeed. He who has an ear to hear, let him hear.
Another great one dean! Keep it up man
Thanks Shawn!
Well done, Dean. Super impressive ride! Greetings from Germany!
Thanks Felipe! Hopefully we can get together and ride again someday!
Try hiking it next time SOBO and see the parts you missed.
Good idea! Hiking it would be amazing!
Much respect! On single speed no less, wow!
Thanks so much!! 🙏
Incredible and challenging adventure. Loosing a wallet in the middle of this long ride could cut off all supplies and end it. Nicely captured story 👍.
Thanks! My heart dropped at that moment and was even more lifted up when Josh rolled up with the wallet. Amazing experience!
Chapeau, Dean! Great to see Roam content on UA-cam. Very well done. And props to Doug too.
Thank you so much! People like Doug add so much to these efforts. I was blessed to meet him that day!
@@andersonsoutside I did not fully appreciate that you didn’t know Doug at all beforehand. Even better! Super effort - and a top-shelf accounting of it in your video.
@@andersonsoutside And that shot at the top of Palisades! Super wow.
Doug came cruising up behind me while I was nodding off, and we we started chatting. Then he decided he was going to ride with me to the finish. Truly a great moment!
Nice job! What gearing were you using?
Thanks!! I used 30x24 and it worked pretty well for me. I was able to ride lots of the single-track and the only tedious parts were the wilderness detours where I would spin out.
What are those glass pyramids at time 1:23 / 10:34? Are they green houses or something more sinister?
Not sinister, Haha! They are the Muttart Gardens. Each pyramid has a different ecosystem that the public can visit.
Nice sunset. Why don't more Canadians ride trikes?
Thank you! Not sure about the trikes...
Phenomenal performance Dean, thanks for bringing us along .Sir , I was genuinely getting nervous that you would be a couple of minutes over time 😮 Great video!
Thanks Bob! I didn't think the time would be so close either! Haha!
Thank for sharing about the items required for preparation, that’s exactly I was looking for. I have to buy pogies for my bike to ride during cold weather.
My feet and hands tend to get cold, so my pogies were a game changer! Thanks for watching!
Good Job! Very inspiring.
Thank you!
I enjoyed every bit of it! Good stuff
Thank you so much!! I'm glad you liked it!
I’ll let you know when I plan on doing my red deer to Edmonton back to red deer in one day ride :)
Sounds good!
I love a good fat bike pack adventure! Kudos to you to have a nice place to sleep. Happy trails.
You are a machine dean. This is a good watch.
Haha, thanks! And thanks for watching!
That's friggin awesome,,, great video and awesome efforts on your folks part. See yha on the trails,,, Alberta rider Don
Thanks so much! Hope to see you on the trails!
How much p s I should be in your tires for winter riding in snow please???
It depends on the softness of the snow. If it's soft, you can go down to about 4-5psi. If you are riding firm trails, you can go up to 9-10psi. On 5" wide tires, 10 psi will feel rock hard. Hope that helps!
I didn't know fat bikes are specifically for snow and sand terrain, cool video edit. 🏔️
Thanks so much!
Super awesome Dean. You guys make a compelling case for the Fat Bike scene over there. Winter is finally starting here, so now I'm inspired to get my chubby tires out again.
Thanks! I love the changing of the seasons and getting out in winter!
