Getting different sounds from a Gibson Explorer, no metal!

You love the design and shape of the guitar but can not find sound clips of anything else but metal... With the stock pickups, 500T and 496R, it's hard to get good playing dynamics. These are designed for distortion. With Seymour Duncan Seth Lovers (SH-55) however, we're back to the 50's, clean and very responsive to how you dig in to the strings. These are wired in sort of a Jimmy Page wiring ...

A tribute to Chris Cornell: Say Hello to Heaven by aproduktion

This year two not so close friends passed, one lost to cancer, the other chose to end his struggle. It hit me and I had a hard time trying to deal with it. Then, when I heard about Chris Cornell I was devastated and everything emerged and had to come out. When words and actions not are enough one can and should do what is left, love. Live for the ones around you, one day you will be gone too. E...

    Thanks for sharing your mods, and this video, for others to compare and benefit from. Someone close by (on CL) has a 15HWX, with your mod recommendations in it, listed for sale. I'm wondering if there's a reasonably, feasibly way to tone down the gain jump a bit when the HOT mode is engaged(?). Same thing with the BRIGHT mode switch. Is there a way to mod it so the brightness jump is pulled back just a bit? Thanks.

    • @karlekspsykopat
      @karlekspsykopat Рік тому

      Hi! I think the easiest mod of these would be the bright switch: I would try and lower the value of the cap between the lugs of the normal volume. If this isn't enough I'd do another deep dive on Rob Robinette's web page to get answers. :) Regarding the hot switch I vaguely recall having read something about this, probably on Nik Player's page: www.nikplayer.com/2012/01/ac15hw1-modifications.html?m=1 Sorry that I can not be more specific, I wanted to fix the hot switch as well but never got around to it, I'm happy just using the cold mode now.

    • @montag4516
      @montag4516 Рік тому

      Thanks, that helps. I've done bright cap changes on volume pots before so that should be easy enough. I'm not sure if I'd rather get the 15HWx combo or the 30HWx/head for some ample clean headroom. I mostly use humbuckers and beefy single coils, so a 250 coupling cap might be a good option for me to try as well. Once I decide on one of the HW amps I can then decide what further mods, if any, I'd like to do.

    Tjena! Tackar för en bra motivering för det jag har tänkt länga att bygga själv 😃 Jag antar att du bara har trafon för glödspänningen till rören? B+ tar du väl från vanlig nätspänning som du likriktar och fixar en ’centertap’ på?

    • @karlekspsykopat

      No. In a 2203 head the presence control is connected from the output transformer to the phase inverter which are parts my preamp doesn't have. I think this feature is more for power amps.

    Sounds good. Definitely has the 2203 sound, which is my fav amp for certain styles. How do you think it would go running straight into an interface, DAW and IRs, minus the power amp you are running etc? I have seen some preamps sound okay run that way. I have a JMP 50 replica that I run into a load box and IRs. I kind of prefer to just run a preamp, because I have to really push the JMP and they had a reputation of blowing up when pushed hard, e.g., Angus carries a lorry load of spares on tour and has a repair guy working full time fixing the blown ones. I tend to just use plugin amps instead. They do not quite sound like the amp, but plugins are so easy and do not blow up lol. No kitset 2203 preamp exists as far as i can tell. I have not even found a layout diagram for one. I am not keen to scratch build one -- just changing my amp from shared to split cathode is as technical as I get for now. Surprising there is no kit considering there is probably a lot of players that would want one for running into DAW.

    • @karlekspsykopat
      @karlekspsykopat 3 роки тому

      Thanks Aquila! I haven't tried it straight into my interface because of my setup (all preamps go to the power amp in my Marshall 4203 which runs on full volume then into the attenuator). Having it this way I can AB-test all pres which is the best way I think to make my own builds sound the way I like them. If I should run my own built pre straight into DAW, I would probably include a phase inverter tube in the design. Not necessary as an inverter but pushing this gain stage is a part of the full sound. Regarding fear of blowing your JMP 50, have you tried adjusting the bias a little colder? The Marshalls I have (4203 and a 9100 power amp) were biased very cold from the factory, below 50% of max dissipation. It feels like a waste to be afraid of using a good amp like that. 😊

    Hello friend, I recently compared the normal channel of the AC15HW with that of the AC30 / 6 Treble, they seem exactly the same except for the capacitors C12 and C14 of the AC15HW. I have an AC15HW and I had thought of changing those capacitors to the same values as the AC30, to have exactly the same circuit of the AC30 / 6 Treble in the normal channel. Keep in mind that there are AC30 / 6 Normal, Treble and Bass circuits. You have to choose the Treble circuit. As for your modification, I prefer to leave the amplifier as close to the original AC30/6 from 1964 one and I would like you to take a look at the Dr. TUbe web schematic called AC30 / 36 Top Boost Mod schematic, there you will see that the original Top Boos schematic is identical to the AC15HW. A greeting.
