The flathead run is in full swing in my home town and to find them you have to make your way upstream to the rapids where they stack up to feed. I was like you when I caught a gar, no way I was putting it in the kayak.
I bought the 7 ft rod, late spring of this yr and loved it. Casts nicely, is sensitive, strong and felt like good quality. Accidentally broke it when I shut in my car door but I liked it so much I got another one to replace it with today lol.

So....now what? How do you land the fish? Do you cut the line, rip the hook out, use a drop net? Just seems unethical. I fish a lot, just freshwater, but I land and sometimes keep fish.
Sadly he’s in a tricky situation and realistically probably never thought he would be having to figure out how to get a fish this size up. I’m curious how he went about it as well
