A surfboard made from Tequila and Sheep's Wool
In this video we turn a waste byproduct of the agave plant into a 5'8 retro fish surfboard, as well as glassing on some sheeps wool keels.
If you're passionate about reducing waste in the surf industry, check out my new venture, hold. Where we turn waste synthetic materials like fiberglass and natural fibers like wool into high-performance, recycled fins. Support sustainable surfing by visiting www.holdfin.co.

    Nice looking board. What's the actual weight and approximate volume of this thing at the end? What was the density range you bought this blank in? Couldn't you have gone away with 4oz on the deck and 4oz on the bottom ... or maybe even 2oz? I mean, heal dents on the deck are not the end of the world, aren't they? And is there a way to fin out epoxy for the hot coat as it is possible with polyester resin? Cheers!

    Cool vid, beautiful board. I would have like to have seen the finished coat polished, I think it gives them a better look and feel it gives a smoother flow.

      Thanks! Polished surfboards are very nice, I do agree. However, one of the downsides is that they show scratches very easily, so for me personally that's why I like a sanded finish. Thanks for watching

    Actually love the finished product! Very interesting choice of materials. keen on trying it out myself. I’ve built a wooden board out of redwood beams that I’ve chambered to make the board buoyant and much lighter, I think taking that approach with this material would eliminate any off gassing and also even further reduce weight. I’ve got a video on my channel how I built it, check it out if you’d like. Would love to hear what you think of it. Hope you’re getting waves mate!

      Thanks! It would certainly reduce some weight, but to be honest this wood is insanely light to begin with, a bit like balsa if you've ever got your hands on that. I'll check out your video 🙌

    great looking board! i love the sentimental poppy. but how did you deal with the raised stem of the flower when sanding? you didn't get burn through?

    • @Whitburn.Surfboards
      @Whitburn.Surfboards 3 місяці тому

      @@JasonLovering great question. I put a 4oz glass patch over it, and then did a hot coat over that, meaning when I sanded I could blend it all into a flat surface. It's not actually flat, but you'd need a micrometer to measure the raised bump haha

    does resin not get in the box when you glass right over like that without tape? i see it often but never understood how that’s possible

    • @Whitburn.Surfboards
      @Whitburn.Surfboards 9 місяців тому

      The first time I did it was by accident - forgot to tape the slot. Turns out if you saturate it carefully without flooding the slot then you can get away with it. Won't work with smaller side boxes, like futures as you'll definitely get resin in the screw hole. Thanks for watching!
