    I would be afraid that over time water would build up in the rad. I would install a valve to drain it from time to time. I, however, just bought a 10 ft exhaust hose in a downward coil pattern before exhaust outside. By the time the exhaust goes out , the pipe is room temperature. I also put a fan on it blowing the heat off the exhaust into my shop. Hope this helps!

    What if you filled the radiator with water and ran the exhaust turough a sidearm to heat the water in the radiator? Not sure how well the exhaust would transfer its heat to liquid but with a sidearm the water in the radiator would constantly be circulating and being heated. And will continue to throw off heat for a good bit after the heater is turned off

I do have a lot of condensation from it so i put a ball valve on the bottom as well as the exhaust and have the water go out the wall so as to keep all the exhaust and water going outside . yours wouldn't have any as your exhaust and water go out through the floor . If you really want to grab every bit of that heat from this thing, use a small aluminum radiator from a car (used and cheap) with a small large PC fan that sips power. You can also do the same with an Intercooler, whatever is cheaper if you can't find an old Home radiator around. You can also do one of those water to air intercoolers, and it will do the same thing, but you store that waste / recaptured heat in insulated water barrels.

    Yes, as the gas cools, it becomes heavier so exiting low is a benifit. As far at the temperature difference, even a very warm room is still cooler than typical exaust gas, but temperature difference is something to consider

  • @wecatchfish9531
    @wecatchfish9531 26 днів тому

    I've seen a few of these videos with the cast iron radiators, but no one shows the temps on the radiator after 8 hours or shows that its even worth it. Does it actually put out heat?

    • @jeffouellette9946
      @jeffouellette9946 24 дні тому

      Well what would have been nice is to see what that would have actually done on its own without the radiator. Of course the temperature outside and inside would have had to been the same to see with and without.

    • @TheCrozenfox
      @TheCrozenfox 15 днів тому

      Of course it works because the gas from the exhaust is heating the cast radiator. The more surface you have, the more it dissipates the heat and this is what you want : a dissipation of the heat inside the room.

    Im curious. Heat rises, why not use the bottom radiator port instead of the top to send the exhaust gasses into there? Itd be more efficient from a point of taking on additional heat in the exchanger..???

    • @timyanke9559
      @timyanke9559 26 днів тому

      The hot exhaust enters at the top and must cool off to exit the bottom, this is a good idea. There is lots of information if you search "The free movement of Gas" for more detailed explanation

    • @CreedmoorFury
      @CreedmoorFury 26 днів тому

      @timyanke9559 wouldnt the less hot Exhaust simply exit the top, as well? I do appreciate your explanation, however. Seems like thermal transfer would be more effcient the other way around. As always, it might simply seem that way.. great explanation, thank you for your kindness!

    • @timyanke9559
      @timyanke9559 26 днів тому

      More heat will be transferred from a downward flow, and with an upward flow, it will continue to draft due to natural convection when the heater is not running. Upwards flow is important if you are relying on convection for natural draft, but with an inducer motor, a downward draft allows more heat transfer.

    • @hipihei
      @hipihei 25 днів тому

      One would have 2 objectives with the radiator..get the exhaust gases out without any bigger resistance so the haeter would work without failures and transfer the heat energy to the space/room it is in.. Maybe think it this way that: If the radiator radiates heat into space it sits in, the gas gets quite a bit heavier and falls downwards thus creating natural flow.. Other way it would flow way worse.. Also the heat tends to rise in the room (colder at floor level than eg. at 1m height) the higher one goes..heat energy transfer requires *temperature difference*. So even though putting hottest gas into the low part would make a bit more energy transfer in the bottom due to bigger temp difference, the gas would cool and top part of radiator would not transfer heat energy into the room with very little temp difference..meaning not very well..like one had way smaller radiator.. Now put hot gas into the top side you have plenty of difference..and while the gas still cools while going down so does the temperature around there and there will still be temp difference on the bottom in regards with the space even though the radiator is cooler down there..👍 You'll get quite a bit of net gain there since the whole radiator transfers the heat to the space..

    For my setup, I use a trickle/ float charger, plugged into a wall outlet, which in turn is connected to my 12 v battery to recharge any drain on the battery caused during operation of my 8kw heater. Charger runs for maybe 10 minutes before switching to float mode. Works great and the charger I use was less than 20 bucks cdn at princess auto or if you are in the US harbor freight would probably have it. Added a Burreck thermostat so that the heater cycled off and on just like your home furnace would. The Burreck thermostat has easy to follow directions for setup and a variety of options for setting start and stop times for different times of the day, has an adjustable temp swing setting etc. Keeps my 10 x 12 workshop at 60 degrees all winter long on about 1litre of diesel/24 hrs.

      even better: a solar charge controller will work with any output from 12 to 30 Volts, and constantly keep a battery at a full charge. for me, a cheap charge controller was 15 euros, and I can combine it with regular, cheap power supplies in the range of 12 to 30 volts. the whole thing keeps the battery at 14% charge constantly and will recharge the batter once it drops below 13 volts. stays within the common range a car battery runs at with the alternator working, and if the power does go out, the battery still has enough charge for roughly 3 hours at full startup power draw. The heater is actually able to work between 12 to 24 volts, so it works with 14 volts just fine. at that point, could probably even go for a solar panel and go 100% self sustained.

    • @dsfarmns2823
      @dsfarmns2823 Місяць тому

      @dsfarmns2823 Okay, Thank you! I was thinking about running two heaters to my radiator . I would make a junction box with two port holes, then run the combined exhaust through the radiator, so I am thinking of going half again larger than yours, maybe. Where do you get 200% What about back pressure. That is a steam hot water heater exchanger. Not ideal for hot air. When you point at bottom you are sub freezing? Seems you are wicking cold in from pipe. Radiator is too big. Not a bad idea but steam radiators are rare. I set mine up so the exhaust pipe is mostly inside the garage. Yes there is wast

    The condensate trap should be on the cold side of the rad. Exhaust gas is to hot on the input side of the rad to condense into water

    You can use a combustion analyzer on in the exhaust stream to tell you its efficiency. Those Chinese diesel heaters have a combustion efficiency around 70-78%. Extracting 200% more efficiency would require breaking the laws of physics. Thermo-Pride is the only company still around that once made a 90%+ efficient oil furnace (diesel). The rest of the companies that made them have been sued into the dirt for deaths caused by their equipment. Keep in mind we aren’t “cracking the code” here, we are re-inventing a death trap. NOx is just too high with oil/diesel to prevent the secondary heat exchanger from eventually clogging. Those Chinese heaters have particle density worse than a traditional furnace and if those can’t do it than what hope does that have. When they first start it’s so high you can see it without instruments (smoke). That’s assuming the acidic condensation is addressed in the secondary heat exchanger ie drain trap inside so it doesn’t block the exhaust when it freezes draining outside, high quality stainless steel so it doesn’t rot out and leak inside (or block the passages), etc etc. This is one of those cases where you say “why doesn’t anyone invent/nake/sell this?” And instead of researching we skipped to “I must just be smarter than all the engineers on the planet”.😂

      @cynic5581 all these poisonous gases, are easily removable with PC fan mounted on the building exit hole. As the temp there is ultra low, this fan can work and work with no probs. It should be PC due to the same 12V power. One have to test different speeds, as some of them fans are too powerful and probably can influence the burning. I mean it is 2025 outside, there is Internet, one have just to define the problem and all of the human's knowledge is at hand to solve it. Don't give up so easily.

    What do you think happens to the teflon tape over time with this kind off heat passing through it? Teflon tape is made to resist hot water NOT hot exhasust, i'd invest in some kind of carbonmonoxyde warning measuring device and then built a sueport for that...

      The threads do the sealing not necessarily the tape. It's Teflon tape because it's a lubricant aka Teflon.

    There might be even better way. Diesel water heater. Plum it into one more cast iron radiator and use aquarium pump to circulate the water mix. Two radiators would stay warm even after burn cycle. Especially one filled with hot water. BTW exhaust hose should never go up according to manufacturer.

    When you’re welding you should at least wear a pair of gloves to protect your hands from the UV. Great idea on using the steam radiator to capture the heat from the exhaust. If you put a box fan behind the radiator you’ll put heat into your shop faster.
