Nakagin Capsule Tower by Kisho Kurokawa -One Minute Architecture
Anyone who has seen the Nakagin Capsule Towers knew that it was going to be inevitable that they would be torn down soon. In 2010 hot water was shut down due to a burst pipe, a net is thrown over the capsule to deter pigeons, parts are rusted, tiles broken, the building looks in a terrible state.
This comes at no surprise, most older buildings in Japan are quite badly maintained, it is often cheaper to tear a building down and rebuild, there are also hardly any conservation laws or regulations to deal with these kind of landmark buildings.
The main focus of this video is the symbolic significance of the building. The idea behind the capsules can, in my opinion, be traced back to Ludwig Hilbersheimer, who I have referenced to before. Architecture is space for human activities, and in a city like Tokyo these activities are not like in the traditional home focussed in one place. Instead these activities such as working but also eating, sleeping, entertaining and sex are spread throughout the city. The home, the small cell, the capsule is just a transitional point that the inhabitants of the greater Tokyo region traverse through.
I wrote a book about architecture, published by Springer it's available here: www.springer.com/gp/book/9789813346574

How architects become famous - my thoughts
Переглядів 2,1 тис.3 роки тому
My personal thoughts on how architects become famous. I mention the book by Paul Davies: An architects guide to fame, which is really good. There is also (a now dormant) website by Conrad Newel called: Notes on becoming a famous architect: famousarchitect.blogspot.com Thanks for watching, please like and subscribe. Why van der Architects? And what does our logo mean? (van der Architects Archive Series)
Переглядів 3823 роки тому
When I founded my company twenty years ago, I had to find a name, and as I had a very long name I abbreviated it, in what I thought was kind of funny. To be honest I did not really think much about the name but it stuck. For the logo although technically we are a Japanese company, I wanted to incorporate something Dutch thus the proud poodle. La Kagu - A Rare Renovation Project in Tokyo By Kengo Kuma (One Minute Architecture)
Переглядів 1,5 тис.3 роки тому
La Kagu is a, for Tokyo, rather unique renovation project. Kengo Kuma took an old warehouse and kept it's industrial character and placed a larger stair in front of it. This staircase is almost a geographical feature that takes the shoppers to the entrance or even to the second floor. I personally think we need more renovation projects in Tokyo! Thanks for watching, please like and subscribe. F...

Why I, as an architect, wanted to go and work in Japan (van der Architects Archive Series)
Переглядів 7 тис.3 роки тому
The second in this series I talk about a question many people ask me: Why I wanted to go to Japan to work as an architect. In this episode of One Minute Architecture Archives I talk about an exhibition called Europalia, I went to see in Brussels in 1989. In this exhibition I saw work of Japanese architects such as Kisho Kurokawa, Tadao Ando, Toyo Ito and Hiroshi Hara. That same year I visited a...
My very first design project - 20 years ago (van der Architects archive series)
Переглядів 6443 роки тому
I have started a new series in which I recall some of the projects that I have been working on. This episode is about Nokia my very first client. I worked on this project while teaching at Waseda Univeristy, where I was also a research assistant. Nokia's slogan Connecting People inspired me and when I was flown to Helsinki I experienced first hand what this phrase meant to it. Connecting people...
One Minute Architecture: The Farnsworth House
Переглядів 35 тис.3 роки тому
Some thoughts on the Farnsworth House designed by Mies van der Rohe and completed in 1951 for Dr Edith Farnsworth. This building is loved by many students of architecture but it has a deeper story behind it, something that seems to be worthy of a Hollywood production that should be on the big screen soon: variety.com/2019/film/news/maggie-gyllenhaal-ralph-fiennes-farsnworth-house-1203117914/ Th...
On the Importance of a Sketch Book (One Minute Architecture)

I really like sketching and I think it is a very important part of the design process. In this video I list seven reasons why a sketchbook helps me in my creative process. A list of architects and artists whose sketches I really like: (in no particular order) Aldo Rossi, Giorgio Grassi, Dario Passi, De Vylder Vinck Taillieu, Peter Wilson, Le Corbusier, Franco Purini, Jean Giraud (Moebius), Jacq...
Office Renovation Project - by van der Architects (One Minute Architecture)

This is a new office renovation project that we recently completed. The project is located in a building in which the owner transformed a former gym into rentable units which gave rise to a rather unusual space. In this video I explain the process of transforming this space into a bright and open workplace with tactile and texturally distinctive surfaces. Thanks for watching, please like and su...
Kengo Kuma: Kadokawa Culture Museum (One Minute Architecture)
Переглядів 2,5 тис.4 роки тому
This is a pre-opening visit to Kadokawa Culture Museum by Kengo Kuma. For the Kadokawa Museum’s main building Kuma’s approach is to use stone, which in this particular building he has used “different from any other stone architecture in the world”. The statement is rather ridiculous and let’s assume that it has been lost in translation. I personally think the strongest part of the architecture ...

The Glass House - a Masterpiece by Philip Johnson (1949) (One Minute Architecture)
Переглядів 7 тис.4 роки тому
There are a few buildings that I really wanted to see since I was a student of architecture and this is one of them: The Glass House by Philip Johnson. It was completed in 1949 and became an immediate success, so successful that in weekends the roads leading up to it would be clogged with visitors who wanted to see a glimpse of what Modern Architecture was all about. Philip Johnson is credited ...

Both projects are an example of the cellular island-like structures that form Tokyo. Gaijin Goombah does not get that at all he said in one of his videos stop pulling up Gates everywhere in Japan more likely he like to say stop doing this in Japan known as Japanese Gates and I don't like him for saying that because he's clearly not getting on why they're pulling off Gates like this.

are the different types of insulation more or less the same when it comes to earthquakes? for example, due to the shaking of the walls and such, will that create chances to create breaks in the insulation?

Steel frame homes seem to have a reputation for poor sound isolation, what is typically done to address this problem, if at all? I feel like (from my research) reinforced concrete may be better for me as I'm fairly sensitive to noise

thanks for this summary- I think about Kenzo Tange everytime I go into the city center and see his iconic buildings in the peace memorial park- many people complained at the time about the too ordinariness of the design, but I think the minimalist design works really well with the (now) green lushness and open spaces of the park. I would love to see more of his organic phase curvy buildings, that is so interesting

fair observation. just because its been designed by a famous architect doesnt mean it should be admired on a pedestal. perhaps this is an example of trying to wow people with facades but lacks the concept and emotional aspect in the interior.
