Absolutely the best comedian I ever saw that could play to the room in front of him and half the show could be a riff off the top of his head. Miss this guy so much......
Some of the stuff that seemed off the top of his head was probably preplanned. Like, if that woman wasn't sitting there, he would have picked a different white woman for the bit. It's still a performing skill to have it seem so natural and in the moment.
No doubt he had scenarios in his act that simply needed people for. Listen to the “Confrontational Chicken Lady” bit though in one of his live recordings where the lady was eating chicken fingers and looked bored. He let her have it a little and then spent like 10 minutes ripping her to pieces….was very funny. That is an example where he riffed off the cuff and dynamically worked the room…..
