First Up- ,and then Downwind

Sailing upwind from Torre de sale in the east to Piombino in the west. Giving the harbour entrance of Piombino a wide berth, because of ferry traffic. Then shunting upwind against NW wind as close as possible with a shunting angle of about 90 degrees over ground. Then bearing away and running on a broad reach at the final part to reach the beach near Pombino
Keep on shunting

Hi, how long is the windsurfer boom you are using? Also how long is the yard? Thanks.
Sorry, I found your most recent changes to your rig on Facebook. Really helpful
If you ask me what kind of rig to build: Crabclaw. My new rig has a 520 yard and an about 440 boom. But I will go back to Crabclaw with yard/boom equal length, about 480.
That's interesting. Would you still have a mast track on the yard if you built a crab claw rig? Why would a crab claw be better than your current set up? Thanks, John
@@johncoffin100 Yes, Would use a masttrack for the yard, because I would install a similar reefing system. Cc overall is better because of lack of complexity , lightness, low CE and beauty
@@segelreto Thanks. I was thinking the same.
Happy vibes….
came for the proa, stayed for the music
Excellent presentation. Looking forward to the next video.
Nice! do you have boat plans? What wood was used for outrigger connection. Looks stiff but flexible. like it
Plans available on pjoa.eu .Ask Janusz Ostrovsky, the designer after the wood.
I was sent back here by one of Fjordproa's videos. It is so good to see you still active in Proaworld Reto. You won't know me but I know you from your videos over the years; I hereby nominate you for the Proa hall of fame! And such a great video! And a splendid shanty. Fjordproa calls it a 'shunty'; of course he is right.
Shunty! I forgot, that's great. Thanks
❤Erinnerungen keimen in mir auf! Super Bilder beim zuhören ❤😊
Happy New Year!
Happy new year! You are a brave man! 😂
Oha 😮 Frohes neues Jahr🎉
How do you manage without a mast prop? Why doesn’t the mast fall over if the wind catches you from the wrong side? I saw on fjordproa's channel that you have been developing a new reefable rig. I’d love to find out more about this. Thanks, John. PS. I enjoy your songs and videos very much!
Thank you. The mast foot is on the platform slightly to weather. Fore and aft stays go from the bows to the masttop. So the stays are more leeward than the mast, and hold the rig when caught aback, even when there is some slack in the fore/aft stays. For reefing the sail comes down in a sail track on the yard. When the CE comes down 80% it moves forward 20%. To compensate for that I have attachment points further back.
Thanks, that's very helpful. I want to build a P5 this winter so follow your videos with great interest.
If you really want to build a P5, I can help. But ask before you build.@@johncoffin100
Dear Reto, I’d like to start building in the New Year. I was going to use 4 mm ply for the hull and 6mm for the bulkheads, deck and cockpit floor. Is that what you did? Did you sheath the hulls with glass cloth and if so, what weight did you use? Did you just sheath up to the water line and did you put glass cloth on the inside? I want to make the boat as light as possible to make it fast and easier to put on the roof of my car. Is there any other advice you can give me? Thanks, John
There's a lot of advice I can give, as I optimized the design over a long period of time. There are quite a few positive details that differ from the original design. I started with the ama , which is good, because it is more simple. I used 4 mm ply for the hulls, decks and cockpit floor 8mm for the bulkheads, glassed all the outside surfaces, no inside surface and used 200 glass. @@johncoffin100
I enjoyed this so much I had to keep watching again and again. Thanks!
Beautiful video, cheers from Tacoma Washington, USA

13.1 knots is pretty good! what is the sail area?
11 m2 . Absolute Speed record with this sail 15.0 kn
thanks! wow that's huge! 15 knots is great!
thanks! wow that's huge! 15 knots is pretty decent. apparently it's very difficult to do more knots than the boat length in feet
Danke ! This short video is so inspiring… I wish I could joint some day
Sooooo much fun👍😁😂. Let’s have more.

Thank you, that was very fun! Makes me want to come visit!
oh btw your song is stuck in my head ;) very catchy!
I agree that mast shift is a powerful steering technique. It's like weightshift/sail is fine and mast tilt is coarse. However it can be a lot of tension in the windward stay so it can be difficult to adjust, I'm still figuring out how to set mine up so that it's easy to adjust. Watching your video I see two windward stays, and you have a cleat on one of them. Do they join at a block at the top? (which would give you 2:1 purchase) I also notice your mast step is on the windward gunwale, which gives you better leverage against the mast, but would also mean a smaller stay angle when backwinded
Yes there's a block up there between the 2 shroud ends, and I have another tackle before the cleat so that's 4:1 purchase? My mast foot doesn't sit on the weather gunwale but another 20- 30 cm windward on the platform.
is that a wind surfer mast as the mast? does it bend under compression? some other proa sailors were saying windsurfer masts are not stiff enough for a proa mast
Yes and no. A normal Windsurfmast which fits the length (4,2 m) would bend too easily under compression. A longer mast (490 or 470) with top cut off is already stiffer. It can (and has to) be reinforced very easily by gluing a carbon sleeve on: Sand, put epoxy on mast, then roll sleeve on mast, then put epoxy on sleeve, then spiral wrap peel tissue band around. Gives perfectly laminated, stiff result. But is still flexible enough that it bent to a U when I got backwinded in a gale and allowed the mast/sail to lay down flat on the platform. And jumped back straight perfectly undamaged afterwards. Another time my boat got airlifted on land during a thunderstorm and landed upside down. An alu/wood mast would have been a total failure , but not my carbon mast which survived also this calamity unharmed.
@@segelreto got it! thanks for the explanation!

Hate to tell you but that proa isn't a Hawaiian canoe....altho yrs ago we believed and i still do that hawaiin canoes WERE sailed as proas are, in fact hawaiin canoes were best sailed stern first for better speed, i once read
And you believe, that I believe my boat to be a hawaiian canoe? Why ?
@@segelreto WHY do you name a micronesian canoe after a Hawaiian Queen while singing Hawaiian style songs, you ASSUME that i am guessing what you might be thinking, i am not, i DON'T presume that anyone who builds a nice boat hasn't researched the origins of such vessel's
@@joedaman2380 I firstly named her so, because I was imagining me gleeful watching germans trying vainly to spell out this tongue braker. Secondly because she (Lili...) was also a composer of songs, which I greatly admire. The name of a micronesian leader would probably have had less syllables. As for the style of the song, I admit, that the intro sounds a bit hawaiian. But I didn't know anything about micronesian music when I made this song, nor did I own a tahitian ukulele then. Those are popular more to the west of the pacific, which isn't exactly micronesia, but at least closer to it than hawaii.
@@segelreto well that is a great boat you built, and also i did enjoy the video very much.....wish you the best wherever your journey takes you...

The song 🤣
Bravo!
I have no idea what I just stubbled across, time for bed
It's basically a lament about the winter being to warm to be able to play "Eisstockschießen", a bavarian winter sport for which you need ice. First part describes how the game is played, at the end the "Eisstock" lands in the (iceless) water, and the comment says "...dann hoid ned", which means about "then just not" in bavarian dialect .
Damn drugs...
Love the lyrics too 🤙🏼
Thanks! Enjoyed the video! Where can I get plans to build one like yours?

Hello! nice boat how you call this rigging system?
It has no name. I just invented it and it keeps on changing/evolving.
@@segelreto cool, am I understand right that you had clew crab before, and upgrade it?
@@AntonVTR Yes, I had a CC before, but it got fragile beyond repair, so I decided to try something new. Upwind performance and reefability are a gain, but practicality is still far from optimal.
