    You have an alternate version of this labelled "Out West" from Pioneer Trails. The beginning and end in this version is transposed, the stress a few shots (closeups) in this that are not in the other version, and while the intertitles are basically the same, these ones make slightly more sense of the story! Thanks for uploading them!

      Well spotted, the original 1923 35mm film ran for about 70 minutes, most silent home projectors ran using 300ft 9.5mm reels each capable of running 12-14 minutes of film, nearly all of the Pathe 9.5mm feature releases were condensed in to 2-3 reels I guess to make them more affordable in what would have been the 1930s era. Pathe first released this film in 1930 and again in 1937. The would often edit/condense films in different ways and re release with changed titles, gave them a second bite if the cherry...I still have no idea who released this version as I have not been able to find the title in any of the catalogues, this could have been something one of the cine clubs did back in the day or as I suspect this is a re-perforation of a 16mm film into 9.5....film lending library's would do this if 16mm films became damaged...Thanks for taking to the to watch 😀

If you ever find a stash of Hal Roach movies, there's a 1927/8 one-"The Honorable Mr. Buggs". Screenplay by Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy as the valet [in blackface] and Anna May, cast against type, in "whiteface" as Baroness Stoloff. The stills are spectacular. Thats how it was back in the day, Pathe release the first for use at home 9.5mm film in 1922, the 9.5mm projectors used were all silent up to around 1937 when Pathe released the Vox which had an optical sound head, sound projectors even at that point were beyond the reach of most working men, the Vox was £ 60.00 when first released which would have been 6-8 months wages for most folk, people would also hire the films from library's rather than purchase them and nearly all at that point carried silent films only, this film was released on the 1st of March 1935 when silent projector/film were all the go...

    • @stevethe95collector33
      @stevethe95collector33 6 місяців тому

      @@littleshoemaker Yep cutting up films happened all the time, in the world of 9.5mm film 100 feet and 300 feet reels were the most common, this film was released on 3 x 300 foot spools, each one ran for about 12 minutes before you had switch, the original 35mm cinema release was 63 minutes in total, I think condensing films made it cheaper and easier to produce for home use and also avoided Pathe having to pay fees to the film producer/stars....as time went on you could get projectors that used 900 feet spools (36 mins) which gave us films less cut up, A lot of the comedy shorts and cartoons are on home movie film as typically these were able to go onto 1 or 2 x 300 feet spools without editing, also this would have been an expensive hobby during the 1930 - 1960 period and out of the reach of most working class folk, keeping films short and sweet would of help keep the cost down...

      One of the earliest film gauges was 9.5mm which was mostly a Pathe format, by the mid 60s the 8mm and 16mm film types had been become more predominant, Pathe had lost momentum because of WW2 and being a French company they were subject to the Nazi ban on the 9.5 and 17,5mm film gauges, only 8 and 16mm were permitted. As a last ditch attempt to gain ground in the market Pathe decided to Release the Pathe Monaco Duplex 4.75mm Monoplex Projector, it was supposed and to some degree it was the first wide image format, the film was produced by splitting the existing 9.5 film in half....As a product it failed abysmally, it was expensive and due to the size very difficult to handle...only a handful of the cameras were sold and even less of the projectors.... I am lucky to have the only examples in colour that I have seen and I have been collecting for a very long time and is possibly the rarest of films produced for the home market...
