What to do with all these figs!
Переглядів 55211 місяців тому
I often get questions about what we do with all my figs. In mid September, it's peak ripening time for my figs that we grow in containers. We definitely don't want them to go to waste. So what do we do with them? We make a few batches of fig jam of course. But, that still leaves quite a few more that need to be preserved in some way. Several years ago, I bought a Nesco food dehydrator. It makes...
Moscatel Preto Fig Review

Let’s review Moscatel Preto! A delicious fig from another fig collector from Canada. I’m unsure of the origins on this one. I’ve grown this one for several years. I think it’s another winner for northern climates as it sets a good breba and main crop of figs. Enjoy!!! Dan and Shawna

Greetings This one comes from an old friend from my Figs 4 Fun forum days. My friend Evelyn collected this one while visiting family in France and Switzerland. It’s a yellow fig with an interesting leaf pattern. The figs are sweet with a nice berry flavor. While the plant gave me a decent number of figs in year 2, year three produced very little. 2022 was a decent but not great year with about ...

This short videos describes and shows one of my favorites known as De Tres Esplets for our good friend Monserrat Pons who has a large collections on the Island of Mallorca in Spain. It’s a fig that does really well for us here in Michigan and can ripen most of its figs in a single growing season. Thanks for Watching!!!

Fico Secco Piacentino
Переглядів 803Рік тому
I received this fig as Fico Greco from another collector several years ago. Upon reading more on this variety, I’ve learned that it may be a synonym of several other figs. Another collector writes: Fico Greco Paolo Belloni ‘Pomona Garden’ is a fig variety that comes from Italy. Its long name tells a little bit about its origin story. “Greco” indicates that the fig is a Greek variety that grew i...

A couple of edits: I believe Neal Peterson looked at trees that produced fruit with a 6% or less seed to fruit ratio. In developing his cultivars, he weighed multiple fruit from the same tree for several years to analyze this. Not just 1 fruit from 1 year. Freezing may not kill the seed, but I would suspect that seed viability could be negatively impacted by it in some way. If you really want t...

Maltese Beauty AKA GM155 Fig Review 9-11-20
I’m getting ripe Pawpaw right now. But the ripening time usually lasts 3-4 wks. Chestnuts are last week of September or so. So your timing is good.
I am originally only 20 min from Owosso Mi. Could you share what time of year paw paws are ripe? Also what time of year chestnuts are ripe. I’m writing this 9/11/24 I plan on going home for a visit in the next few weeks and would like to plan my trip to coincide. In addition what should I expect to pay per lb for paw paws and chestnut varieties. Thank you so much in advance. much appreciated Laurel L

You have plant for sale.Thanks
I have a smaller dolly I use...UNLESS my husband is around to carry them. :)
Dan...In your 6b zone, would it survive your winter if it were planted in the ground and protected with burlap?
It may. I can’t be sure though. In my mind, most figs have similar hardiness. What sets them apart is their ability to fruit after dying back. With this variety I would have one in a pot and one in ground to make sure I didn’t chance it.
great job Dan; how long do you keep them in those small pots? John in Victoria, BC
Hi Dan. I love. Your Garden. What material are those large pots you have the figs in?
Thank you. I actually use my own mix and have another video on how I mix that media. Check it out! Thanks! Dan
You make great videos.
Interesting display of success. Enjoyed your operation👍
Thank you!
I have one of those yellow PH meters. Was thinking I needed a special soil PH meter. Good seeing how you used it and good knowing I can use what I have. What was the PH of the water reading? Thanks for sharing.
Around 7
I can’t wait till I have “extra” figs. That’s a foreign concept to me still
Eddie. Thank you. I hope the Irene's Black Greek does well for you! Dan
What do these figs taste like?
Definitely helpful air layering video.Im going to try your method on my Violette de Bordeaux before August here in east Tennessee.Wish me luck. Thanks !
Don you ever get mold with all that humidity? Or do you put hydrogen peroxide in your spray?
Sometimes, yes. A mild fungicide like Protect DF works well. Or Cleary's 3362
Mike Kincaid turned me on to your green cuttings propogation. Thanks so much Dan, for sharing this new (to me) technique. 3 yrs later but still so impactful for anyone, especially newbies like me. This opens up possibilites for me since I just realized I might have gotten two figs that probalby came from tissue culture and they're all leggy with new stems coming out all over the place. This makes me feel better knowing that all the new and slender growth can be used. I understand that the cutting will not produce the spidery growth pattern of the parent plant. So it's not a loss since TC plants will be my prolific mother plants.
I just rooted this variety less than 6 months and it has figs already.
I'm looking forward to taste this fig next year. Dan just replace my dead Harry's Crete tree. Thank you Dan. New subscriber.
What is the reason for leaving a leaf on? Is it necessary? I thought it would dry out the cutting faster.
Can you say sugar? 😂
What do you do with all of the figs that ripen?
@@truthsayer6329 why I eat them of course. :)
Which do you prefer, or had better luck with the rock wool blocks or the Root riot? I had seen these videos months ago and early winter I did 5 very small cuttings in some old rooting blocks I had and 4 of them got roots very fast, I was impressed. Today, all those plants are bigger than the mother trees are. Im going to be topping several of my trees this week and have both the rock wool and root riot..... what say you?
Definitely, Root Riot. The Rock wool can rot the cutting later when you plant it up.
@@danfoster25 Thanks for the reply. I JUST started soaking some rock wool cubes because I have a few days till my new root riot plugs get here..... I think I'll wait for them to come before I take any cuttings. Thank you.

Hi friend can I get cut fr9m this beautiful fig
Thank you!!
Hi Dan, thanks for the great video! Where did you get those 26 inch pots? They look pretty sturdy and nice looking as well!
These came from Crescent Planters
@@danfoster25 thank you!
I'm kind of confused as Ross the Fig Boss said there was some very notable complex berry flavor.
Taste is subjective. One man’s Berry is another man’s Honey. I wouldn’t call this a honey fig. I wouldn’t call it a berry fig. Probably something in between. Sometimes I get some caramel. Sometimes some acidity. It’s a good fig and a keeper. Breba are different from main crop figs too. Would love to hear from others on what they think. Thanks
Sounds like a keeper
Nice info.
Thank you
Both of those gardeners should do tours periodically!
Good 👍
Good fig
Hey Dan, love the videos! My brother turned me on to you. I was wondering if you trade fig cuttings? or sell cutting? I only have an Italian fig and a black mission fig which I'm sure you already have lol Id love to grow my collection! Thanks in advance!
Just watched your interview with the fig boss and found out you're from Michigan! So am I. Where about in MI? Im in commerce
Thanks for reaching out. This is a great time to get cuttings. I would highly recommend Harvey. Here is a link. www.figaholics.com/cuttings.htm
so cool
Interesting that it's mostly organic material. Seems like a lot of growers prefer a large part of perlite/pumice/calcined clay, etc. Can't argue with your results though, so maybe figs aren't too picky.
Doent osmocote kll off organic microbes in soil?
Where can i purchase calderona fig tree?
I will have one listed next week on Figbid. figbid.com/Listing/Browse?Seller=Dfoster25
How was the success rate with the transplanting of the rockwool? Also with the root riot? thanks for sharing.
Rockwool final results were 50/50. Root Riot, 100%. Root Riot is recommended over Rockwool.
Whew! Last night I took the plunge for the Root Riot plugs. Thinking I have some other trees I'd like to try to make cuttings of (Hazel Nut and Mulberry) and most likely more, so I invested in the 100 count bag since seemed most cost effective for the long haul. I still have some rockwool left, not much, from decades back though was thinking better not to use from what I watched and read online. I'll save that for later. @@danfoster25 I'm over in what appears to be zone 6B in Coloma. Guessing will have to take a trip over and get some other varieties to see what all will grow on my south wall and possibly out in the yard. I plant to get another Chicago Hardy this Saturday that is left outdoors year round in South Bend. Is neat finally getting my first fig plants in the ground. I need to remove the plastic frame I placed over and set up against the house to protect from the snow the last few days. I plan to bring two branches plants inside for the winter and most likely leave the rest in the ground as the previous owner I got these from in Michigan City did for the last few years. Do you think is OK to prune back some of the stems and take cutting now?
Here's my situation as of 3 weeks back with now most all the leaves fallen off. ua-cam.com/video/-zByoHKQGY0/v-deo.html@@danfoster25
I'm thinking I'm going to take some internode cutting, like one dormant above and one under. I'm in SW Mi. I was wondering for fungus if Tea Tree oil or maybe something like Baking Soda or Borax might help with mold somehow? Dusting with Diatomaceous Earth possibly as well?
A mild fungicide like Protect DF works well. Or Cleary's 3362
Fehmarn is a Brown Turkey Type. It was found ob the German Island Fehmarn.
Love the vid!
Cool! Thanks 👍👍
Fun thanks for sharing.
1st off… I can comment! Thanks for sharing your visit to CA. Thanks to the fig growers Nick & Pamala for showing your fig collection. Smith, Genevese Nero, Adriatic JH, Tradiva L4 are a few of my favs. 6a Michigan
This was a great video to see a couple of grower, collectors who live within 2 hours of me. I always learn something and I enjoyed seeing you folks tour and taste some figs.
Great video Dan, I really like the stories associated with all the various fig cultivars, do more! I'm here in zone 9A, Texas, it was a tough year with all the 100 plus degrees and little rain but now I'm getting more figs as the weather comes more in line with it's early Fall pattern.
Thanks, I'd like to do more of these videos rather than tasting videos. The people and stories behind many of these figs is what makes growing figs fun.
Dan, thanks for sharing this adventure, enjoy California, we are getting frost warning tonight in Michigan.
I need a few good frosts to knock off all my leaves. Stay warm!
If you’ve put an air layer on too late, and have to over winter. How does the rootball fair when the temperature gets down to the thirties?
Dan, great video..I live outside chicago about 25 miles west zone 5b. Can I safely store potted figs in my unseated detached garage ? Thanks again and keep up the good work.
Hi Dan- New to your channel. From another of your videos, I gathered that you 'promote' your favorites to the row of large containers. I'd love to see which varieties made the cut, and what you like best for your climate. Thanks!
Calderona for sure. Irene’s Black Greek, Smith and some other experimental varieties. I may swap some out next year. Thanks for commenting and visiting! Dan
Hi Dan, What do you use for a soil mix?
I make my own. I think I have another video on that. Let me know if you can’t find it and I’ll attach a link
