No-Till, No Drill, Low Prep Switchgrass Planting
With the gun season over, my mind has shifted into full blown habitat mode. I have a pile of projects just waiting to be done. I spend a good portion of my time in the stand making notes on my phone about what I want to get done once I'm done hunting. The list is long!
One thing that always rises to the top of the list is thinking about ways to add additional screening to the farm. I want to screen everything, from access, to food plots, to bedding areas. The more secure the deer can feel the better. And one of the main ways I screen is by using switchgrass.
Now if you have been thinking about adding switchgrass to your property, but you skipped the prep that is required the year prior, here's a method I used last summer with great success. I did very little prep and got one of the nicest,cleanest first year stands I've ever gotten. It's a method I'll be employing again in the future. Hopefully you find this video helpful!

Creating a Deer Habitat Explosion w/ Hybrid Poplars
Переглядів 1,9 тис.14 днів тому
I was doing some follow-up on a property this past June and got to check out some previous work that a landowner and I did a few years ago. He has several acres of hybrid poplar that were starting to get past their prime and wasn't sure what to do with them. I told him to knock um down and cut trails through it. And wow, did the habitat absolutely explode in this area! There's a good amount of ...

    Hmmmm. I thought they wouldn't bed in switch due to lack of food. I thought that's why it made good screening. If they're bedding in the screen, the point is defeated as now they can watch you walk to your stand from their beds. Im guessing that it takes meticulous upkeep to keep woody browse completely gone from switch.

      we had a burn in the November and the turkeys showed up next spring after greenup in large numbers. It was surrounded by trees on 2 sides and 6 foot tall crp native grass on 2 sides, an area irregular about 2 acres. I thought it was to eat the bugs on the greenest, golf course like area you have ever seen. But now the feds make you disc, burn or spray strips in crp so the young birds can thrive there. Interesting as they used to prohibit that and now they pay you to do it. Didn't notice any there when it was black in the winter, no food?

    • @PFHabitat

    Literally had a tornado go through one of our properties to the point of visually looking like absolutely nothing could go through it. Turns out it beds probably the most deer and the preferred bedding of the mature bucks. Those small "dead ends" you are showing will have zero negative effect on the bedding. Absolutely regurgitated nonsense for the most part.

You should try to go in there in spots and spray clethodim and kill the grass in 20-30 yard circles for better woody/broadleaf regen. Leave some grass for diversity.

    I've used 53% glysophate solution and have had excellent luck with killing off buckthorns without stumps regenerating. For whatever reason, I did have a few that came back, but I would estimate about 95% at least buckthorns never came back. An extra lot we bought over a year ago had a lot of buckthorn trees in it. You could say it was very neglected! A bunch were in upwards of 25 feet tall, most with berries, and were a real pain to cut down and get out of there, and a lot of seedlings in varying truck sizes and heights. It took a lot of work, but now that lot is cleaned out of buckthorns and the native trees are what's left. The worst part of where the buckthorns were the most concentrated managed to kill pretty much everything leaving us with that part having only a few weeds, a few trees, and nothing else. Now though, other native trees, grass, and other plant life are growing there. At this point, there are very very few seedlings left which is a far cry from what we started with and have begun planting other trees to repopulate that wooded lot with native trees. The control plan is to get a stump grinder to get the stumps out, and any seedlings that pop up to keep mowing them off, or just pull them out if the ground is wet enough. I have read that if seedlings are continously mowed off, over time they will die due to them having to use the food reserves in the root mass and eventually it runs out with them trying to resprout. Time will tell how successful we are.

    • @PFHabitat
      @PFHabitat 24 дні тому

      Glad to hear you've gotten at it! I used gly in the past at label rates and it sucked on buckthorn. Glad you had success at higher rates. I've also heard about that "death by a thousand cuts" method. I'll just keep spraying it :)

    You are spot on with the aspen regeneration. I did 19 acres in January and this summer there is so much regrowth I can’t imagine it. Now I have to figure out what to do with it and how to hunt it. The problem with logging small tracts of woods is finding a logger that will come in. It took me 3 years to get that done. Great video.

    • @PFHabitat
      @PFHabitat 25 днів тому

      Yup aspen is a gold mine when it comes to deer habitat. Logging small parcels can be tough but if you're patient and willing to work work a forester it's often doable

  • @ChitFromChinola
    @ChitFromChinola 27 днів тому

    I’m using a different approach. When I tried forestry mowing, I ended up with shattered stumps that were difficult to treat, and extensive follow-up foliar treatments that were difficult for me to time correctly. Also, the mechanical disturbance of the soil caused increased sprouting of otherwise dormant seeds the following spring, so I never seemed to get ahead. So, I switched to a low-disturbance approach where I just spray the seed bearing trees in the fall, leaving the younger ones to outcompete each other and make it difficult for new sprouts to get started. This way, the seeds in the soil don’t germinate, the seed bearing trees get killed, and most of the smaller non-seed bearing trees are out-competed and die on their own. It’s the long game, but it’s low cost, low impact, and low disturbance, requiring only low cost basal bark treatments instead of high cost machinery. Just an idea.

    • @PFHabitat
      @PFHabitat 27 днів тому

      On small projects that you can stick with that could work. But I do acres at a time. The mulcher makes everything very accessible. And follow-up is easy IMO. I'll still have to follow-up for a few years, but not having to crawl through downed trees makes the follow-up very easy to do. And I'd switch to cutting your seed trees in July before the seeds on that tree are viable. Just helps create less to have to kill in the future
