This channel was created to share practical ways the average land owner can set their land apart from their neighbors. Most folks leave 90+% of their land completely unmanaged for wildlife. But those that are willing to roll up their sleeves and get to work can completely transform their property into a haven for wildlife at little cost of their own. Sweat equity is the land managers best friend. So feel free to tag along on this journey with me. I enjoy good dialogue so don't hesitate to comment or ask questions. I'd love to hear what you're up to on your property as well. Godbless and happy habitating!

A Tutorial on Hinge-cutting Trees for Deer- Trees that Hinge well and Summer Vs Winter Hinge-Cutting
As deer habitat managers, we have countless great tools at our disposal to make our hunting properties better. One of those tools is hinge-cutting.
Hinge-cutting can be a bit of a buzz word in the habitat sector. Some folks don't see the merit in it. But after using it for years, I love it as a tool and it's made a big difference on our property.
With that being said, it's not a tool that works on every property. There are some tree species that don't hinge-cut well.
In this video, I discuss the trees I like to hinge-cut here in Minnesota as well as the time of year I think trees hinge-cut the best.

* For foliar treatment of buckthorn I treat them with a 5% solution of Triclopyr 4. For cut stump I treat the stump with a 25% solution of Triclopyr 4/ 75% diesel or crop oil. I like to mix in applicator dye with both solutions to see where I'm spraying easier. You end up using less chemical if you mix in dye.

How to Create Predictable Buck Movement Through Deer Habitat Work
Переглядів 2,9 тис.День тому
We can do all the deer habitat improvements we want, but if we don't make them hunt well it can be all for not. As we build up the habitat on our properties, we want to always be thinking about how this plays into our hunting strategy. One of the main things I'm wanting to do is create predictable movement patterns for the deer on our property. A big piece of that is creating predictable buck m...
Planting Fast Growing Free Trees for Deer (Pt. 2)

I shared a video last spring where I took a hybrid willow, chopped it up into a bunch of pieces, and stuck the sticks in the ground. Hybrid willow is known as one of the fastest growing trees in North America and it propagates easily from cuttings. Once the cuttings are established they'll grow at a very vigorous pace. Well, here's a follow-up to that video showing how well the cuttings did. We...
5 Great Locations To Build Deer Bedding Areas

Creating deer bedding areas is probably my favorite habitat management tool to use. There's nothing quite like a good day of chainsawing, knowing your work will increase the carrying capacity of the property you're working on. With that being said, there are certain terrain features you should be looking for when deciding to create deer bedding areas. In the attached video, I discuss some of th...
Frost-Seeded Switchgrass Success- Till and Plant

Switchgrass can be a frustrating plant to establish, but with a good plan (and patience), it's fairly easy to experience success planting it. I found this old video on my phone this past summer and decided to finish it and show how this particular switchgrass planting did. This was a planting where I did some late summer tillage to expose the dirt for frost seeding. You'll see that, even with b...
The Easiest Way to Create Deer Habitat (and You Can Make Money Doing it)

I love it when I see marketable timber on a property because I know that's going to create an opportunity for logging. Logging is one of the fastest ways to completely transform a property. In this video, I show just how much the habitat has changed on our property since we logged. I took a video right after we logged and did a follow-up in this video. It's crazy to see the transformation. For ...
Drought Tolerant Food Plot Forage that Bucks Love

When food-plotting, it's good to plant something for every situation. This past hunting season, we had only a few tenths of rain from mid-August to early November. During that time most of our food plots dried up. But there was one forage that was able to weather the drought. In this video, I show just how well that forage did in spite of the dry conditions. Adding Diversity to Food Plot Forages w/ Pumpkins

Diversity is always king when it comes to planting forages for deer. Knowing this, I'm always trying to think of different forages I can add to our food plot regiment. I had never tried pumpkins before, but decided to plant some this year. They are a very cheap forage that are easy to add around the perimeter of your food plots. Here were the results. What’s your success rate hinging good hinge species with below freezing temperatures?
@@bryanvandermallie7039 I still do fine. But like I shared, I'm looking for soft landings which helps a lot
I don’t hunt, nor do I allow it on my land. I created a wildlife sanctuary where all animals are safe. Planning to use some of your ideas in my woods. Thanks…
@wagz77 I can respect that. I have plenty of friends that don't hunt. I've even been known to rub shoulders with card carrying PETA members. I appreciate anyone that works to leave their piece of dirt a little better than they found it. Creation is a beautiful thing.
70% of a deers diet is Woody browse.
@@Grizzlife yes sir!
Crazy fast growth. Looking good. Nice, educational videos.
@@xringeagle thanks!
I was on a property recently that had alot of it but was untouched. I was thinking we should mow it and let it come back fresh. What do u think?
@ChilcoteForestryServices man that's odd but I like the way you're thinking. I'd definitely reset some of it
I don’t know, I’m on the fence about hinges. I get the structure connection; however, crowns, and regeneration from a clear-cut weighs good on me. The brambles, and shrubs nurse the young oaks along, and so on. Those bigger dbh trees resprout and canopy faster than one might think, especially on good soils. Seems like you’re covering the same ground twice in a short time.
@scottschaeffer8920 I use it all. I always tells guys if they don't wanna use it by all means don't use it. I have plenty of clear cut areas on our farm. They bed deer. But I'd put a well done hinge-cut bedding area up against a clear cut bedding area any day. I hunt these bedding cuts and I know which ones see the most traffic during the rut
It is good to see turkeys and other game enjoying your hard work restoring and building habitat
@TrappingTheMitten-JohnHowell it's a rewarding feeling for sure!
Sam do you mainly hinge where you want deer to bed?
@@stevedenoyer5956 I use it for many reasons. Bedding, screening, guiding deer movement, etc. But I love it for bedding
Dropping onto other trees is key. I have to sacrifice some to save others if that makes sense.
Also having another person with a hook can assist .
@@stevedenoyer5956 yes sir!
Hard maple are very difficult to. Mostly what I have unfortunately.
@stevedenoyer5956 great stump sprouts though when flush cut
I find box elder are almost I possible to kill, even the bad hinges survive, elms are definitely good, I’m in central ny near Lake Ontario, I like march for my hinges. Also I’ve heard of guys taking rope and tying down small tress to get new growth.
@Mustachio63 yah both hinge great. Tying down trees definitely works as well
Great video. I plan on doing some clear cutting and hinge cutting soon. I dont no why but when i talked to the odnr and county conservation guys they are so against hinge cutting
@transamguy9073 most folks just don't understand it. My DNR forester is not opposed to it. But he's also a big bow hunter.
@ so is mine
Another great one! nice video
@@MikePoupore-dd5bn thanks for watching!
Great video! Really liked the seasonal variation of success. Great idea to use a smaller saw. I often use a Sawzall because it's quiet and light and still works well on smaller trees.
Thanks Virgil. Yah I love my little arborist saw. It's cut a lotta trees for me
Fantastic video/explanation... Much appreciated! I'm just getting started on this on my property near Stillwater, MN...
Appreciate it! Glad to hear you'll be diving in with the saw. It's fun and rewarding work
He he yeah! Been there done that.
Peekaboo I see you.think it don't say it.😊
@@terrybolton630 lol true
That looks great.
@@hughjanis6439 thanks!
The manifold are so very VERY hard to turn on & off. Can you help ?
@@DurhamHumor hmmmm I haven't had that issue
Curious what region you're in? We have some willows in the area, And many in our duck pond geese sanctuaries. So, I'll probably follow your advice and go collect some cuttings. They do that cool thing where they sprout off the bases and like broken branch stumps right. So should be pretty simple to grab some cuttings.
@jonathanbennison9220 yes they do! I'm on the border of growing zone 3/4
Another great video! Really interesting points about thinning and the impact on tree stability-something a lot of people don’t consider when opening up the canopy. I’ve been working on habitat improvements myself, mainly clearing invasives and improving the understory. It’s amazing how much of a difference it makes over time. Looking forward to more great content!
@buydirtlife hey thanks for that! I love hearing that you're knocking out invasives. Keep up the good work!
This works great IF your property is in an area that receives adequate moisture or rainfall but my property is arid and dry in west central Texas . Mt Cedar ( juniper) and sparse live oak trees very little else survives maybe a cactus or two . Open to suggestions
@johnbicknell4330 I wish I could help yah but I'm an upper midwest fella through and through. That's a whole different world for me down there
I’m going to plant several hundred red osier dogwood, hybrid willow and elderberry cuttings. What have you found to be the most cost effective way to protect them from deer browse?
@jldj5000 there really isn't a great cost effective way. I'll use tubes and cages. Cages are by far the best but can get really expensive.
That was a great video, very instructive
@@ChilcoteForestryServices thanks brother!
What percent of canopy is open? What’s the deer density like in that area? How big of an area ? My worry is deer overbrowsing the regen.
@nicschaalma3508 70% open. 200+ deer yard on us in a normal winter so regen does get smashed. Hinge-cutting some trees helps a lot while waiting for other regen to come. Gives you viable cover while you wait for the regen. We have about 50 acres total of timber where I do a lot of this chainsaw work. It's a series of small, connected wood lots
Still no snow? When was this shot? We have about 18” on the ground now in northern lower Mi
@stevedenoyer5956 this was early January but still just a couple inches here. We've had the cold weather but not the snow so still a great winter for our deer!
@@PFHabitat yeah we get a lot of lake effect compared to what you guys might.
Another great video! I have some questions about this design. How many yards did you leave between doe bedding areas to allow for hunter access? How close is your travel corridor to the closest edge of your doe bedding. Is your travel corridor between food and bedding or downwind of both?
@virgilholmes6688 thank Virgil! Roughly 100ish yard between the bedding areas. The travel corridor runs right alongside the doe bedding, within yards. Generally I run a corridor downwind of bedding and one between bedding and food, so I'll have a couple corridors, all working by stand sites eventually
Thanks, Sam. I really appreciate you sharing your experience. I liked how you linked your bedding with the corridors, which is similar to what I am doing on my farm. I am trying to keep my stands 100 yards from doe bedding and within 20 yards of the corridor, which is a bit challenging. God bless, Virgil
@virgilholmes6688 appreciate it! I have that same challenge working with a series of small wood lots. Securing/screening the access off really helps that
I got 24 tree saplings/whips (around $5 each) in my house now waiting until the snow melts to plant. 12 - oaks and 12 various fruit (american plum, mulberry and persimmon ) I planted some last year and in tubes only and deer ran them over , during rut I think, small cages are needed. I was able to save one chinese chestnut that got ran over. $15 whip, so ..
@monkeyminer892 yah the cages definitely are better than the tubes. Tubes are better than nothing but cages really help to insure success
@@PFHabitat I use both a tube and cage around it. Tubes help growth and protect from rabbits and mice and cage for deer
@@monkeyminer892 they definitely do help in that regard
Hunting in south east ga. Never heard one person mention any of this. Lot of logic info,I'm doing all this to my land. 30 acres surrounded by swamp on one side. Management on the other.

Really enjoyed this video!!! I’m have spent the whole weekend doing cuttings of green Giant arborvitae’s for this exact reason!!
@catchemalive that's great to hear, thanks for watching!
How open is too open for deer bedding?
In my bedding areas you can't see much past 10 yards
