Last Minute Rut Hunting Deer Stand Set-Up
We're just a couple weeks away from that most beautiful time of year known as the whitetail rut. As we gear up for that time, we should have already set up some ideal rut hunting stand locations. I have plenty of stands that I primarily hunt during the rut. I want to be in the thick of it during that time of year.
In this video, I show a new rut stand set-up that I quickly put in place towards the end of this past summer. The downwind side of bedding is my favorite type of location to hunt during the rut. This stand was set up in an area that has turned into a nice bedding location out at the farm. I can't wait to try this spot out!

* For foliar treatment of buckthorn I treat them with a 5% solution of Triclopyr 4. For cut stump I treat the stump with a 25% solution of Triclopyr 4/ 75% diesel or crop oil. I like to mix in applicator dye with both solutions to see where I'm spraying easier. You end up using less chemical if you mix in dye.

How to Overcome Buck Fever when Bow Hunting

What goes on between your ears can be one of the toughest parts about bow hunting. To pull a mature buck within bow range requires many things to go right. In this video, I talk about one thing that has helped me immensely when it comes to increasing my success level when l...

But since then the warm temperatures have returned which has slowed down the movement to some degree. Getting Rid of (some) Food Plots to Make our Farm Hunt Better

Food plots are great and a necessary part of almost any good deer habitat/hunting plan. But, there are times where food plots can actually work against us as deer hunters. In this video, I discuss why we are going to get rid of some of the food plot acres on our farm. Thanks Sam for sharing your hunts. I was glad to hear that you are willing to make a high risk sit this early in the year. I had a plan done on my land when I first bought it and was told to only hunt the outside fringes. Going into the 4th season without seeing a decent buck from my stands I will be looking to try and find some higher risk stands in travel areas for the rut and later in the season. After 3 years of this plan I am not overly happy with it. They did help me figure out how to add some small kill plots in the 40 acres of swamp. Good luck this year.

Thanks for sharing that Art. There's a time to sit on the sidelines and there's a time to go for it. I have stands for both. 3 of my last 4 bow bucks came early season and I was within 50 yards of where they were bedded. I watched the one stand up for over an hour and not move more than 5 feet. In high pressured states they just don't like leaving the cover. So when the conditions are right, it's time to move in and try and kill them, regardless of the time of year. These stands also tend to double as great rut stands.

They rifle hunt it and don't see many deer on her small piece so she was all for it. I'm sure I will get skewered over this but it's not just about getting a deer. He got the deer, but that was a bad shot and that deer felt a lot more pain than it should have had to take to the grave and for some reason that doesn't even seem to bother you in the least. It comes across as if you feel absolutely nothing for the deer. Children see this and also learn not to feel bad for the animal. They learn from watching the adults reaction. This child's excitement should be tempered with reality by explaining this and kids watching this video should see this. To explain it's great to get a deer but that we as hunters need to strive to make sure such things don't happen again. Even if it means going deerless. In fact it really shouldn't be about having to get a deer or you are a failure. I helped bring a kid into bow hunting and had to explain this once and he grew into a fine young hunter that told me years later he was so glad I went there when he made a bad shot and that he believes he enjoys hunting more now whether he gets a deer of not and that it made him a more skilled hunter. So while I love that a kid got to go hunting I sure would like to have seen some understanding and compassion for the deer instead of no empathy being displayed as if you could care less what a deer feels. Maybe that is not what you intended but that is how it comes across. Sorry for the long post but people not showing anything for the animal has become a HUGE problem since hunting shows and UA-cam came along. Many years ago most hunters genuinely cared deeply about what the animals felt.

    • @PFHabitat
      @PFHabitat 24 дні тому

My assumption is you thought the deer was spine shot. He actually pulled the shot and hit the doe in the jugular which results in a quicker death than even a double lung or heart shot. You're correct, it wasn't the shot they wanted. But it was still a quick clean ethical kill. I've known this dad my entire life. I can assure you he deeply respects the game he chases and is ethical to the core. He wanted me to upload this video so he'd have a spot to save the memory he enjoyed with the son. This 2 minutes of footage doesn't enrapture the many conversations they had before and after about all the details of the hunt, including the shot. Bad shots happen, especially with first time hunters, it doesn't mean they can't enjoy the moment, especially with a quick kill like this was

We had 85-90 degrees in Michigan for the youth and disabled vets hunt last weekend. Weird hunting in that warm of weather

@stevedenoyer5956 yah it was a scorcher for us too. A dog would be a great idea, I just need to find one local to me. I want to get my own eventually and train it.

That's a tough loss right there. I watched the video and saw the arrow hit guts and then you tracking right away. I'm assuming you never found the arrow? Having the kid in the stand and wanting to get them on the trail probably skewed the decision making process I'm sure. I still would've tried to get a dog on the trail Sunday morning though. I feel the pain. I had an awesome hunt Sat night having 8 bald deer within 20 yds only to botch the shot w/ my recurve as my limb tip hit a twig. Made the decision to hang up traditional and switch back the compound. We owe it to these animals to make quick clean kills. Not always easy to do in the heat of the moment. Good luck to the you the rest of the season Sam!

@Matt-33 ah man I've had the ol twig get in the way before as well. I agree, we need to do all we can to get the job done as ethically and efficiently as possible. We went just a little ways into the woods when I thought I had lungs. But when I saw the maroon blood we backed out and came back later. In hindsight, a dog right away that morning would have been the way to go. Though I haven't found a dog local to me yet. Admittedly I was rushing a bit with the mid 80 temps looming. I have plans in the future to get a dog and train them myself so I always have one available to me

The 2nd shot looked better than the 1st.. you just never know with bowhunting. Unless I see them go down I’m always a little nervous until I get my hands on them. Stay positive and have a great season

Call a tracking dog next time. They've only been legal in MN for a few years, so a lot of people don't have them added to their playbook of "do everything to recover the deer", but you'll recover more deer and of the ones you don't, you'll feel better about the situation knowing you did everything you could to recover it.

Bummer on the 2nd one. Too far forward and too far back is a tougher line to tow than a lot of us realize. I find myself holding further forward now than I did in my earlier years of bowhunting. I don't hold Ranch Fairy forward, but definitely don't hold behind the front leg anymore. Back edge to dead center of front leg if perfectly broadside nowadays.

@tythomps aim small miss small. Yah there's not a ton of room for error behind that shoulder. Just gotta button things up and do better on the next one
