5 Deer Shrubs You Should Consider Planting on Your Hunting Property
Having high quality shrubby cover on your property is one of the best habitat types there is for deer. Now, it can be a bit of an uphill battle to get shrubs established on your hunting property, but if you can get them to go, shrubs are a low maintenance deer plant that can provide high quality habitat for years on end. In this video, I discuss 5 deer shrubs that I've really grown to love on our family farm.

Adding Diversity to Food Plot Forages w/ Pumpkins

Diversity is always king when it comes to planting forages for deer. Knowing this, I'm always trying to think of different forages I can add to our food plot regiment. I had never tried pumpkins before, but decided to plant some this year. They are a very cheap forage that are easy to add around the perimeter of your food plots. Here were the results. Nutri Crave Corn for Deer- A Northern Deer Manager Review

I've used several different food plot forages over my 27 years of hunting. I'm always trying to figure out what the deer on our farm prefer. This year I tried some long day brassicas (80-100 day). I wanted to try these because I liked the idea of a higher tonagge food plot as well as being able to get a brassica plot in earlier. Two of the last three years we've had very dry falls so having a b...

Creating Instant Deer Habitat and Bedding

Turning an Old Gravel Mine into Powerful Deer Habitat

In my property walks, I get to see plenty of unique scenarios when it comes to deer habitat. This particular property is one I've worked on a lot over the past several years. In one corner of the property, this landowner had an old gravel mine that had been taken over by cottonwood trees. Even in pure gravel, there's a way that we can make this area powerful deer habitat. Prairie Crab. Right along the edge of your grasslands, handles fire pretty good. They’ll go thru a brick wall to get at the fruit in late summer, early fall. But yea, dogwood is the reigning champ. Sunlight a must.

    I mentioned about a year ago that I was hinge cutting diamond willow. I had some success cutting it in the winter. But not enough for me so this spring I'm going to hinge a bunch more when the buds start to swell to see if I get a better success rate. The willow that I hinged successfully is now at deer browse height and is turning into a thick horizontal screen. I think that the taller trees provide little benefit unless the deer can get to tender stuff easy. I have also been cutting my redozier back when it gets to tall. That also invigorates it to push out new tender sprouts. I sure appreciate that you have property so close, so I know if it for you it will work for me! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! God bless you and your family in the new year!

    Interesting ... I've got wild plum tree / shrub along with crab apple , Hawthorne , wild grapes , apple trees and unfortunately lots of Buckthorn that I got to illiminate plus autumn olive which may not be so bad ❓ ....ive been planting dogwoods , high bush cranberry amongst others ....also anybody doing Reforestation , I recommend planting White Birches mixed with conifers ...deer tend to leave them alone except for rubbing antlers on , they grow really fast and adds variety .... I think vits counter productive to plant Green Deserts where whole fields are planted to just white spruces .. mix with birches and wildlife shrubs ....balsams are preferable but deer like to eat them when young ....spruces are way over rated for deer habitat in my opinion ....ive planted everything including White Oaks , White Pine too

    I'm in eastern Washington and I'm planning on planting red osier, elderberry, serviceberry, choke cherry, raspberry, rose, hawthorn and, now that I know the deer like it and it's native to my county, Bebb's willow. It's going to cost me a fortune. I hope they're happy. I've got a couple nice wet areas with a lot of alder and aspen. This stuff should do well there. 👍

    We planted stine 9808 roundup ready only corn that is reasonably priced on our farm for grain production. For some reason, the deer devoured our corn and let every neighbor’s corn go. What do deer prefer when it comes to corn? Higher brix level? Maybe you can help me understand this but we had high deer damage where the neighbors saw very little. Maybe try that variety. Apparently stine 9808 corn has something the deer really like. Have a great day.

    Sam, don't give up on pumpkins. Like brassicas, it may take a bit for them to get used to them. For years, I've tried to get people to try them. One thing I never mentioned ( my bad), was not to expect deer to use them as a stand alone food source. More of a midway stopping point before going out to big ag fields. We all like candy but we don't fill up on it. Glad you tried them.

    Thanks for the comparison Sam! I planted 2 acres of nutricrave corn on my Nebraska farm - 2 years ago. The reason I won’t do that again is #1 it’s excessively expensive and #2 the stalks were eaten down to essentially stubs by late July. No corn production because of that. I’ve planted standard corn and never had that happen before. I’m not sure what ate it down but that was an unfortunate experience…

    I appreciate you taking the time to do the test. Thank you! It would be nice to see an analysis comparison of the two varieties. Typically the Nutri-Crave will have more than double the calories of conventional corn while also being higher in protein and energy. This is a real benefit to the serious land manager who is looking to provide year round nutrition and not just an attraction to hunt over. In the winter when quality food sources are scarce, if a buck eats half a pound of Nutri-Crave he will get more than twice the calories than he would get from conventional corn, as well as higher levels of protein and other nutrients. To be honest, you are probably too far north to see the real benefits, including increased attraction. I am confident that a test south of you in Iowa would yield different results but I understand that you are looking for the best options for your area. Again, thank you for the fair test.

    • @PFHabitat
      @PFHabitat 8 днів тому

      Thanks for the honest response Don, I appreciate it. If you ever develop something 90 day or under I'll do another trial. I do see the attraction it can have right now. The deer are currently really on it heavy. And I believe you regarding the nutrient content. For my larger landowners that have the acreage I think it could be a nice late season/over winter food option to help supplement the nutrition in their deer herds as well as provide good late season hunting

    Thank you for a great review for the corn up to this time. Could you please give another perspective review in March or April comparing the varieties again. They wont be in a deficit starting the new growing season if they've had food through the hard time.

      @brentwesemann agreed, we do our best to feed the deer throughout the winter with a variety of forages. Woody browse is my go to. The food plots are a nice supplement. March is such a tough month for the deer here in Minnesota, especially if we get big spring snowstorms. I'll be sure to keep an eye on it and report when they get it cleaned up
